Matters Of The Heart

Continued

The woman were only in the middle of the story when Phillipa dropped back onto the couch softly clutching her chest, but pretending to play with her hair. Something was feeling off. Her stomach started to cramp and before she knew it, everything was going dark.

"Pippa,"

"Pippa!"

"Pi—"

10:14 AM

The production of Hamilton was back on. Everyone had come back to the space they had been in 12 years prior, and they were ready to work. The show was in a perfect time to thrive, with no musicals like it for years.

Lin and Lac stood at Vassar, in the middle of the very first Hamilton rehearsal when a phone went off during A Winter's Ball. "Take five guys," Lac called, wanting to give technical notes for the orchestra, anyways.

"Lin!" Tommy called from the audience. Lac stood before the orchestra, but watched Lin's happy go lucky self jump off the stage.

"Hello?" Lin asked. It was Renée. "I don't understand. I thought they said, this was a slim chance," he said. "Surgery? Her heart can't take that!" Everyone watched the geniuses face drop as he started to gather his things. "Uhh, I'm on my way." He decided. "I—I don't know, but she my wife and I'm not staying in New York when she could die in Texas!" Lin yelled to the device, before hanging up and heading out of the rehearsal. Confusion glazed over the theater as Lin scurried out into the open streets.

How am I going to tell the kids? Nani will probably play strong, but cry alone. Petra will think it's all my fault. And Sebastian... he can't lose another mother. I don't know what to do. I can't bring them. But, what if it's the last they see of her. No. No Lin! Don't think like that. Pippa is resilient. She'll survive.

10:44 AM

Phillipa's body laid still on the cold surgical table, but her mind was elsewhere. In a white dress Phillipa found herself sitting on a shelf watching her doctor, calmly stop her bleeding. It was comforting to know he had everything under control. Is this it? What about my kids? She thought. Lights flashed for a second, and out of no where Pippa was transferred to her apartment. She stood in the middle of the empty walk way, but heard noises around her.

First she peaked into Petra's room. Sticking her head through the door, Pippa saw the youngest Miranda, was already packed and sitting on her bed. "God, if you're out there," she prayed, "please save my mom. I'm not ready to be left alone with my father. Please," Petra cried. The mother watched her daughter collapse onto her suitcase and had to back out. Her heart was breaking.

The next room she entered was Nani's. She saw her daughter struggle to pack her clothes. She looked winded and very tired. "My mom can't die," she muttered. Pippa walked through the door and leaned against the chest as her daughter moved about the space. "I can't do this by myself. Fathers are useless, but mothers... my mother has to be here," Nastasia cried. The seventeen year old, cleared her face before shutting the duffel bag and heading into the bathroom. Pippa took that as a sign to head out.

Down the hall, Pippa skeptically went to Sebastian's room. She was afraid of his reaction. They weren't that close, but she was still there. Cautiously, Phillipa stuck her head through the door. Sebastian's clothes were strewn about as usual with some in the actual bag. He was sitting on his couch holding something, Pippa couldn't exactly make out. She had to get closer.

"Why did she have to love me? Why did she have to call me bear? Why couldn't she have just abandoned me for good?" Sebastian cried. He was holding a pair of glasses. Phillipa recognized them as the glass she'd given back to him after the girls took them and almost broke them.

My son.

Pippa backed out of the room and headed to hers. Inside, Lin was sitting in the window holding a small box. "I was going to do this when you got back, but your heart couldn't wait," he practiced. Is he going to? But I thought we agreed. Phillipa watched. She wasn't sure she was ready to get married, but she was also aware that her heart wasn't going to wait forever. Maybe his offer wasn't— What's that noise? Lights flickered once again, but this time her fingers were going warm. Pippa was back in the OR.

"I need ice! Where is the transplant team?" Her doctor yelled, shoving ice into her open chest cavity. Pippa came around the table. Her temperature had spiked, and her heart was missing.

"I'm not sure. I'll call again," a nurse answered. Pippa watched as everyone moved around the room still in sync. Weird was an understatement, but familiar was definitely a good word. It looked like the bones of musical. Like when they were working on Hamilton the first time. To the untrained eye it looked like a mess, but to everyone in it, things were going to plan. "Five minutes out!" She called. Machines started to hum instead of roar. Runs turned to walks. Breathing evened out. Pippa took her place back at the top of the cabinet. She was ready to see what was going to happen next.

11:27 AM

Lin and the kids boarded there flight in good spirits. Renée had just updated Lin that Pippa would be okay. She said that she hadn't gotten specifics, but she was sure the actress would live to see another day. That's all I need. Lin breathed.

11:37 AM

Renée, Jasmine, Phoebe, and Ariana sat in the waiting room as doctors did their best in the OR not to far away. "She thought she was pregnant?" Jasmine mumbled. Phoebe slowly shook her head.

"I'm a doctor. I should've noticed," she self blamed. Renée placed a firm hand on the OB's knee.

"Hey, this isn't your fault. This is no ones fault. Given the circumstances, we had no reason to suspect her heart. It's been 13 years since we've even seen any issues. We couldn't have known," Renée reassured. Ariana looked at the woman weird and pushed herself from her seat.

"What are you guys talking about? Her heart?" Ariana yelled, fearful of her sisters life up to that point. Renée stood up, trying to comfort the confused sister, but got a jerked away arm. "Don't touch me! Tell me what is going on!" Ariana demanded.

"Okay, Okay. 13 years ago, Pippa was in a situation that got her shot. And while in surgery the doctor found out that she had ARVC and that the walls of her heart are very thin. But they got her under control and found a way for her to live with it. But with the added stress of her boyfriend coming back and her show being canceled, her heart couldn't keep up," Renée spark notes. Ariana started to hyperventilate as tears streamed down her face.

"I— I can't—go—this—I—" she stopped, running off down the hall towards the exit.

"Should we—"

"Let her breathe. This is a lot," Renée interrupted. She knew how hard it was for herself. She could only imagine how hard it was for Ariana to realize she wasn't there for her sister when she needed her.

"I'm going to call Scott. He wants an update," Phoebe murmured. The actresses watched the OB leave the area as Renée took her seat next to Jasmine.

"You okay?" Renée asked. Jasmine nodded, while playing with her phone.

"I can't imagine being their mother. She probably has no idea that Pippa even has this issue. I can't imagine Madalynn having an issue and not coming to me. Even when she and Ant were fighting and she moved out, I knew exactly what was going on at her boyfriends. And even now that she is home, when things go bad, she comes to me and Ant," Jasmine rambled. Renée knew exactly what she was feeling. Even having adopted more kids, she couldn't imagine any of them keeping a secret this big from she, her husband, or their siblings. That's not what family was about.

"Let's just focus on what we can imagine. Pippa going home. She is getting a new heart, Hamilton is back on. Life as we know it will be improved as soon as we are back home in our normal lives," Renée declared. She was no longer going sit around in fear. Jasmine did that enough for the both of them. Pippa needed someone proactive in her corner, because lord knows Lin would be a puddle of blah as soon as he stepped foot into the hospital.

4:15 PM

The plane had landed almost twenty minutes ago. Lin was on his way to the hospital, and the kids were on their way to the hotel. They weren't ready to see their mother especially since she would be out of it. That's not an image they needed.

Nastasia opened the door of the three bedroom suit, leading her sister to their room as Sebastian found his. Petra sat her bag by the bed and slumped on the full sized bed. "Stasi, is mommy gonna be okay?" She whispered. Nastasia looked up in shock. No one had called her that in years. In fact, the last person to call her that was her mother.

"P," she replied, dropping her things and sitting next to her sister, "of course. Mommy is going to just fine," she surely replied. Petra wiped a few shedded tears and laid her head on her sisters shoulder. "Mommy will be back to telling us what to do in no time. I promise. And I love you. It's gonna be okay." Nani promised.

"Okay. Okay. I believe you,"

4:19 PM

"Well, what do you want?" Lin asked. Pippa bit her lips and grabbed a hold of Lin's jacket.

"I want a man who is going to treat my child and me right. Can you do that? Tell me you can do that and I will believe you," Pippa almost begged. Lin slowly nodded and placed his hands on Phillipa's hips. "Okay then," Pippa half smiled.

Her smile. Lin shook the memory form his head as walked to the receptionist desk.

"I can't. I need you to know something before we continue," Pippa said. Lin stared her and placed his hand back on her hip. "I'm not pregnant anymore," she whispered. Lin's jaw dropped along with his hands. He crossed his hands and went into papa bear mode.

"What? Wh-wh-why not?" He stuttered.

"I miscarried on the day I was gonna tell you that I wanted to keep it,"

I don't want to think about that. We may have lost our child, but I won't lose her. His brain kept going.

"Lin!"

"What did you do?!"

"It was threw and threw. He should be okay,"

"But she's not,"

Stop! I'm not him anymore! Lin mentally fought, dragging himself to his girlfriends room. Upon arrival, his heart dropped. Before him laid, Pippa in a hospital gown, sleep. The room was dim, her hair had lost its shine, she seemed so lifeless. She can't be. They wouldn't put her in a room if she was. An IV hooked to her hand dripped. Machines moved. She wasn't.

Lin pushed the door out of his way to find Renée, Jasmine, and Phoebe in the room. "Lin!" Jasmine cheered. The woman met him half way, engulfing him in a group hug.

"H-how's her heart?" Lin asked, letting go, not taking his eyes off of Pippa. Renée gave him a warm smile, leading him to chair next to his girlfriends bed.

"It's new. They found her a heart an hour outside of Austin. A 25 year old in a motorcycle accident. The heart is healthy and she will be just fine. But, just like having a baby, she can't do any tangoing or salsaing for 6-8 weeks," Renée updated. A long sigh of relief left Lin's lips as he texted the kids. He didn't want to keep them waiting for longer than necessary.

"How can I repay you guys for being with her? I am so grateful," Lin asked. The woman gathered their things and shook their heads.

"You being here is payment enough. Take care of our girl. We can't be the Schuyler Sisters without her." Lin smiled as the woman left the drafty room.

"Alright, babe. I'm right here when you get up. Take your time, I know this is the best sleep you've gotten since before Nani was born," he joked, squeezing her hand and lying his head on her bed. They were in the waiting game now.
