(05) two weeks notice
Mid August 2016, Tokyo
Yuki's roommate, Reina Iwasaki, was a freaking genius. She had skipped her third year of school with her extremely high grades and had jumped straight into university. Reina was a year older than Yuki and they didn't really have anything in common, but they had gotten along pretty damn well when they had first met. And they had become roommates and now, best of friends.
Tokyo was an intimidating city and though her parents had always given her a lot of freedom, Yuki herself had been worried about living by herself. But thanks to Reina, she didn't have to. The two years Yuki had been living with Reina were a lot of fun, and a lot more than she thought they would be.
But now...
"I didn't even think about it," Yuki said as she sat down on the old couch. "It just slipped my mind."
"Mine too," Reina also joined her on the couch, grabbing one of the many cushions kept on it. "I mean, it shouldn't have, but it did. I really don't want to move out, you know? I enjoy living here and you are a great roommate, Yuki."
"Thanks, so are you," Yuki answered. "But you know, we still have a couple of weeks till you have to go, so we have to make the most of it."
Reina didn't reply, only shifting her position so that she could plop down on Yuki's lap, with the cushion right below her head. "I'll miss your udon. Literally the best I've ever had."
Yuki patted her head with a laugh. "You're still gonna get to have it, you know? And I'll share the recipe I use. Though I refuse to share my secret ingredient."
"There's a secret ingredient?!"
"Yeah." Yuki snickered at the look on Reina's face. "Don't worry. That's your going away present."
When Yuki told her parents about Reina moving out, they had been worried. But she had assured them she could live on her own. Her parents had only agreed to let her do that on the condition that they pay her rent till the time she found a new roommate. Yuki had been convinced, but given that she was a people pleaser, she had agreed to what her parents had said.
(And she was definitely going to be paying them back, even if they said no)
It had been a few weeks since Reina had moved out and the apartment certainly looked and felt empty. But Yuki didn't feel lonely. After all, she had her friends from class. Plus Iwaizumi. She liked to think she had Iwaizumi.
'Maybe I should call him now,' Yuki thought as she checked the time on her phone. It was midnight. Huh. She must have lost track of time while she was watching that movie. Iwaizumi would be up and getting ready to go for a run, health freak he was. She entered her bedroom and immediately made her way to the bed.
Collapsing on it, Yuki immediately pulled up the blanket and opened her phone. She quickly switched to facetime, not even caring that she may look like a mess. She dialled Iwaizumi and waited and waited and waited. In five seconds, he picked up her call.
"I should ask why you are up so late, but you're always up so late." This was the first thing that he said when his face came into view.
"And you're up early," Yuki made a face. "You need to learn how to sleep in more."
Iwaizumi rolled his eyes, an amused but mildly frustrated look on his face. "So...why call me so late?"
Why had she called him? Why? It was almost like she couldn't physically go without speaking to Iwaizumi at least once a day. She had to speak to him, somehow, and so facetiming at midnight was the method for that. "I was...bored. And I had nothing to do. So I called you. You're fun."
"Thank you for calling me fun," Iwaizumi answered sarcastically. "But seriously though, why call me so late?" There was a hint of curiosity in his eyes, mingled with the slightest amount of worry.
"Maybe I was feeling a tad bit lonely now that Reina-senpai has moved out and I have no one to talk to at night," Yuki admitted, almost forlorn for a second. "But now that I am talking to you, I feel much better. And so less lonely. Talking to you makes me feel nice."
Iwaizumi's expression softened and there was the kindest of smiles on his face. "I feel the same. But you really need to have a proper sleep schedule. Otherwise, you'll make me worry about you."
"Aww, you worry about me? How nice." Yuki grinned, but internally, her heart was doing a happy dance. He worries about me!!
"Of course, I do," Iwaizumi answered. "You and Oikawa are practically the same in the sense that both of you tend to stay up too late and have the worst sleep schedules. I can't help but worry that you're going to end up like him."
"Oh my god, that would be the worst thing in the world," She immediately made a face. "The very thought of being like Oikawa is making insides curl up in disgust. Never say that again. Never ever say that again."
"You're slowly becoming dramatic too," Iwaizumi laughed. It was fun teasing Yuki like that. Really fun. Plus he had to tell her that other thing too. "Now go to sleep. It's too late. I have something to tell you but I'll only tell you later."
"When?"
"If you wake up at eight in the morning your time."
"Come on, that is too early!"
"It's not. It's the perfect time to wake up."
"No, it is just too early. Why can't you just tell me now?"
"You need to be fully awake for this."
"Oh do I?" Yuki wiggled her eyebrows, laughing. At the same time, she wondered what Iwaizumi wanted to say and refused to listen to that part of her mind that wanted to misconstrue this into something she want deep, deep down. Which would never happen.
Iwaizumi nodded, almost smirking. "Yes. Now, I'm going to go on a run and you're going to sleep."
"Alright," Yuki answered. She was too curious now and really really wanted to hear what he was going to say. She hoped it was something good. "I'll go to sleep as you said. But I swear if you disappoint me..."
"Trust me, I won't. Now, off you go. Good night."
"Night, Iwa-san."
*
It was like her mind and soul both knew something was going to happen, so when Yuki woke up at 7:45 AM, she was not very surprised. She was a curious person by nature and by the way, Iwaizumi had been acting, it seemed like he had something big to share. (It was definitely not *that* thing). Though most of the time she hated getting up this early, she didn't mind getting up early for whatever this was.
Iwaizumi was a very punctual person, so he would definitely call her up exactly at 8 AM, her time. Which would be around 3 PM for him. Yuki forced herself to get off her bed and start off with her morning routine.
Ten minutes later, she had finished brushing her teeth and changed out of her nightclothes into her favourite comfy t-shirt and shorts. It was hard to resist the urge to just slide down and snuggle into her blanket, but somehow, she managed to stop herself.
Like clockwork, her phone rang exactly at 8AM. Seriously, how was Iwaizumi this punctual? The man was something else, alright. Not wanting to appear eager, Yuki let the phone ring thrice before she picked it up. Iwaizumi's face appeared and it seemed like he was sitting on his bed, wearing a light blue t-shirt.
"Hi," He said warmly. "You woke up on time."
She ignored the odd tingly feeling his voice gave her, simply answering, "You just made me too curious. I think I probably dreamed about what you were going to say, but I completely forgot."
"I hope they were pleasant dreams, then."
"I'm sure they were. Now, tell me everything. What happened? I hope it's good news. I mean, I'm sure it's good news. That's why you wanted to tell me like this, right? You could tell bad news like this too, but that's a little pointless. Not that I'd mind if-"
"Yuki," Iwaizumi suddenly said, interrupting her rambling speech.
"Oops," Yuki felt a little sheepish. "Sorry about that. I must have gone on and on."
"No need to apologise about that," Iwaizumi answered. "It's completely fine."
"Ahh, thanks," Yuki awkwardly smiled. She shifted into a more comfortable position before asking, "So...what's the big news?"
It was generally hard to get a read on Iwaizumi because she was so used to seeing him with a grumpy face, but lately, he used to smile more and laugh more. It was something she thoroughly enjoyed seeing.
"I'm coming back in two weeks."
Yuki blinked, not sure if she heard Iwaizumi correctly. "I'm sorry, but did you just say you're coming back? Wha-?"
"Uh-huh," Iwaizumi nodded. "Obviously not permanently. But I wanted to come back before I graduate and start looking for a place to live and a job too."
"Yeah, I get that," Yuki answered calmly. He's coming back?! Like actually coming back?! Wha-?!!
"I'll go home first and spend some time with my parents and then I'll be coming to Tokyo to look for places to live. I do have some shortlisted so I'll check those out," Iwaizumi explained. "But hopefully that shouldn't take longer than two days. So...do you want to meet up?"
'Did he just-'
'Do I-?'
'Of fucking course. I definitely want to meet him.'
"Yes!" Yuki answered, probably a little too fast. "I mean, yes. We should definitely meet up. Oh, I know. Let's have everyone from Seijoh over and we can have a mini-reunion."
"Misaki's in Argentina right now," Iwaizumi answered, moving a little closer to the camera. Reflexively, Yuki moved a little backwards. "With Oikawa. The sap flew her out for a couple of days. Probably because he'd be a bit busy with games now."
"Oh yeah," Yuki answered. "So, it'd be just us then?"
"Yeah. Just us."
"Well, that's awesome. I am so excited to see you!"
"Me too," Iwaizumi smiled and her heart started skipping. Damn it. He had a killer smile and every time he looked at Yuki with that expression, she nearly died because of how fast her heart decided to move.
At least, she had two weeks to prepare for things now.
Um..soo...it's been almost an year since I updated this story💀
I really wanted to write more of this, but my inspiration for my Haikyuu fics has been abysmally low in the past year. But, I recently set up an update schedule which basically forced me to sit down and write this chapter. And you know what? It worked. I had so much fun returning to writing Iwaizumi and Yuki and I am so so excited for what comes next (a.k.a their reunion).
I hope you all enjoyed this chapter!! Let me know your thoughts in the comments <33
