It is widely considered that Remus was a genuinely helpful person who would share everything and be of as much help as he could to others.

Well, let me tell you the truth. Remus might be a helpful person but he sure as hell wasn't when it came to sharing stationery items.

Ask him to lend you a quill or an ink pot and he would stare at you for a few minutes, ask why you don't have your own stationery with you, make you promise to bring your stuff from then on and then hand the things over.

And just be sure, he isn't going to be so generous the next time.

Remus: "Peter, didn't I warn you yesterday that you won't get anything out of me?"

Peter (with his characteristic puppy dog face): "Come on, Rem, it's not my fault that my quill broke."

Remus: "Then you should have kept an extra one!"

Sirius (probably fed up with the useless bickering): "Give the poor bloke a break, will you? Here, Pete, you can use mine. Besides I didn't feel much like writing either..."

Remus (grumbling): "I'd like to see you not writing in your NEWTs as well."
