#1: A Song of Love

Sometimes, all you need is a pen and a paper to get your message across.

Sharon sighs, for the umpteenth time in less than five minutes. They've been sitting here for exactly 38 minutes and 43 second without saying anything to each other, occasionally sipping their coffee while exchanging awkward smiles; bowing their heads down immediately after.

She stares at the black coffee in front of her and the matching one right next to it. Sharon used to hate black coffee with all of her passion. It's bitter, it's black and it's just sad. But the hate she felt for the poor coffee changes that one, fateful day.

The day both of them brew a matching coffee.

The day she fell irrevocably in love with him.

She smiled, recalling the fond memory. Sharon look up to see the man with the round, big, also idiotic glasses in front of her scribbling down the music sheet he brought here with him hastily, the pen moves with the rough movement of his hand.

"What is that piece for?" Sharon finally asked. August stilled, looking up slowly until he met her gaze, not saying anything at first before he sighs, biting his lips while putting the pen down.

He mumbled something in a very low tone that makes it impossible for Sharon to catch.

"What?" Sharon frowned, not being able to make out what August is trying to say.

"I said, it's a song for you." She can see a matching frown gracing August's face, his cheek gets a little more dark out of embarrassment.

"You're writing a song for me?"

"Yes. I don't know what to do with the silence between us, so I grab my pen and a blank music sheet and without even knowing it I scribbled down a song for you."

Sharon switch her attention to the not-so-blank music sheet in front of her. She raised her eyebrows in surprise.

Well, not only did he manage to write up until the interlude in 36 minutes, he's also come up with a nasty-hard rhythm too.

He must have been very frustrated.

"Wow... that's..."

"Complicated, I know." August said, pushing his glasses back up when it slides down a little from his nose.

"Very complicated. Were you frustrated?"

August sighs, "You have no idea Sharon. You have no idea."

Sharon smiles, putting her hand on top of August's big ones, "I'm frustrated too, if it helps you feel any better."

August squeezed her hand, "It does. Thank you very much."

Sharon let the big hand go and grab the pen, stealing the music sheet from August's side of the table.

"I want to contribute to this song too! You're not the only one feeling nervous about us."

She scratch down a few notes that pops out in her head, continuing the half-written music sheet. She can feel August slides down next to her, taking the empty space in the sofa while moving his things to her side of the table.

She doesn't look up from the music sheet even when she heard August asking the waitress for some papers and a pen.

The pen runs through the thin paper over and over again, filling dots with black ink and drawing lines here and there. It's a good thing the pen is new (well, at least she's pretty sure that it's new), or else, they would definitely run out of ink.

She drops the pen on the table once she's finally done with the music sheet. He wrote the song in E flat major, 6/8. Sharon keeps the song in the same key without modulating, adding a fermata to the last note to prolong the sound.

When Sharon finally looks up from the music sheet August is still busy with whatever it is he's scribbling down with the new set of papers and pen.

"You can't look until it's finish." August mumbled, frowning while trying his best to shield the paper from her view.

"Well, that's mean."

"I don't care. Look away!"

Sharon sighs, looking away to the busy road outside. So many people are passing by, even with this kind of heat the people still thought that it's best to spend the day outside, enjoying the nasty sun.

Sharon chugs a big portion of her coffee down. It's already cold now.

"And... done." August said, smiling down to see the mop of messy brown hair that belongs to Sharon. He handed the paper down to her and she frowned, baffled by the strings of words until she finally gets what they are supposed to mean.

'It's the lyric to the song, stupid.' Sharon thought to herself.

"Do you want me to sing it to you?"

Sharon frowned, "But you don't even know how the song ends. I wrote the coda, remember?"

"Well... I may or may not have peeked when you wrote the song."

Sharon's frown deepened, "And you can imagine the whole song in your head?"

"Well..."

She rolled her eyes at him, shaking her head in disbelief, "What are you? Jimmy Neutron?"

August chuckled, "Jimmy Neutron is a science genius, Sher. And while I can be quite good in science, I'm still far from being a science genius. So... no. I'm not Jimmy Neutron."

"Well, you know what I'm saying... you are a genius. A musical genius."

"You should've said Mozart then."

Sharon scrunch her face in mock disgust, "Eww, no... you're not that genius, August."

August flail his hands up in the air, moving both of his hand to clutch his heart dramatically, "That wounds me."

Sharon couldn't contain her laugh, "Stop being so stupid, August! Just sing the song to me."

August followed her wish and drop his dramatic act immediately. Clearing his throat before starting to sing.

You sit there in silence

Sipping your coffee

Looking glum like a fallen majesty

And here I thought again,

What have I done to make you so still

And I thought back to the first black coffee

The one we shared by being so still

No words were exchanged

I keep making excuses to be near you

Snatching your stacks of tissue

Throwing an awkward corny jokes at you

But you just laugh coldly, not making a comment, not throwing a comeback

And I know that I've lost all hope

The moment we said goodbye

I want you to stay with me

Longer and longer than necessary

But I hold it back, by the end of my lips

And we said our goodbye

And we said our goodbye

But fate is kind enough to let me see you

Again after so long

Now tell me something

Do you feel it too?

The same crazy beat I always felt whenever you're near?

I hope you'll stop being so silent

And by the end of this song you'll just listen

That I love you more than anything in the world.

Sharon flips the paper and put it beside her pen, on top of the music sheet. August bites his lips nervously, avoiding Sharon's gaze, looking in every direction but hers.

Sharon chuckles before she grabs his head gently with both of her hands, leaving a single peck by the side of his mouth, shocking him out.

Sharon smiles, using his paralyzed state to add a line to the lyrics. Sharon uncaps the pen, flipping the note open, scribbling down the final line to the lyrics.

And do you know? I'm in love with you more.
