Chapter 3: Goodbye
Maizy rushes us through this door and that door before we finally come to the door that leads us outside.
They put us each in separate rooms so that our friends and family can say goodbye.
The old lady, Debra, hobbles in. I smile and give her a hug.
"Thank you, Willow. Thank you for always looking out for me. Now go kick some butt!"
I laugh and she hobbles out.
Rose walks in and jumps into my lap. "Willow, come on!" she says trying to pull me out the door.
"Rose, I can't go home right now. Come give me a hug and then scurry on home," I say. She tries to run out the door, but I grab her and pull her into a hug. Tears slide down my face and she wriggles her way free and runs out the door.
I can't help but think this is probably the last time I'll ever see her...
Next, my sister and her husband, with her daughter in her arms walk in.
I wrap my arms around my sister and cry.
"Willow, you'll be alright," she whispers through her tears, "just come back, please come back..."
I hold Lily. "Lily, I hope that you don't have to grow up and deal with this Panem. I love you and if you don't remember me, know that I always remembered you," I kiss her forehead and hand her back to my sister.
I give her husband a hug and he quickly whispers, "Willow, you have to come back. Come back for your sister." Then the peacekeepers shuffle them both out.
My dad steps in and we embrace.
"Take care, Willow. Take care of yourself and take care of Fin. I love you sweetie and I know that you can do anything," my dad says.
"I love you too, dad. Take care of Rose and make sure she never forgets me," I plead. Then he is pushed out the door.
Liam walks in and I run into his arms. I don't let go, I can't. All I want to do is stay in his arms forever.
"Look at me Willow," he says pulling away from me and looking into my eyes, "I know that you can change the Panem! And I know that you will do your best to get out alive and bring as many other people as you can. But no matter what happens, I want you to know that I love you! And I'll be waiting for you to come back home. I once heard a quote that said, 'Our paths may change as life goes along, but the bond between us stays ever strong.' And I know that no matter what happens our friendship will never end, I hope you know that too."
"I know."
"I trust that you are strong enough to save people, or die trying. I love you and I hope that that helps you to keep fighting."
He wraps me in his arms. "I love you too...I love you too..." I whisper.
"Come on!" The peacekeeper yells gruffly. He pulls Liam away from me and shoves him out the door.
I fall to my knees. Tears rain down my face. "Noooo..." I cry.
Why do I have to say goodbye to everything that I've ever known and loved? It's too much, it's just too much...
