Chapter 6
Phone call between Leigheanna and Leslie
Leigheanna: I know, she's pissed at me. Not only did I ignore her advice, I also guess Taylor told her everything about yesterday! Hi, Leslie. Before you bash at me, I'd like to apologize for a thing I may have said...
Leslie: Excuse me, but what are you even talking about?
Leigheanna: Let's say I didn't take very well your piece of advice, and now I kind of regret treating you the way I did...
Leslie: Leighy, there is absolutely nothing you need to apologize for!
Leigheanna: But...
Leslie: Listen, I just want to enjoy my summer. Today is such a hot day, so, right now, we're spending some time at the pool. I need to refresh myself.
Leigheanna: Okay, I think I'm going to take a bath.
Leslie: Leighy!
Leigheanna: Seriously, there's no conditioned air, my clothes are already glued to my skin! Let's hope Kait is not too demanding about bath time.
Leslie: What do you mean?
Leigheanna: I mean, how can I take a bath if I have to hurry up? Remember that there are many people living here.
Leslie: Oh, yeah, I kind of forgot that...
Leigheanna: Haha, Leslie! Let me tell you, you're definitely in holiday mood.
Leslie: You're right. By the way, the guys are calling me out, so, let's talk again another time.
Leigheanna: Okay. Hear from you soon! Bye!
Leslie: Bye.
5:30pm
Phone call between Kaitlin and Abbie
Kaitlin: Hello sweetie. How are you doing?
Abbie: Mom, are you even asking? I'm doing badly!
Kaitlin: Darling, what's the problem with you? I mean, we can talk.
Abbie: No, it's nothing particular.
Kaitlin: Abigail, there's never nothing particular. Please, tell me what's going on or else I'll have to find it out by myself.
Abbie: You know what, Mom? I was actually supposed to go camping with Lindsay, but you preferred forcing me to spend my summer with Aunt Bridgette! Knowing what that snarky bitch told her...
Kaitlin: First of all, Lindsay is grounded. Secondly, the "little snarky bitch" is your cousin, so, please, have the decency to call her with her name.
Abbie: Let me finish talking for once! Do you think I'm happy to stay at a place where I can't touch anything?
Kaitlin: Who told you you can't? Do so, if you need. I don't think your cousin will make a fuss of it.
Abbie: You're right, Mom. Now, I know exactly what to do...
Kaitlin: Okay, but I don't think a phone call is the best way to plot, so I guess I'll hear from you another day.
Abbie: If so, then, bye.
Kaitlin: Bye. Girls, I need to talk to you. All of you, come!
Everyone comes, including Leigheanna, who was about to go and take a bath.
Kaitlin: Okay, tonight I have to leave for a commission out of town, so you'll be alone at home.
Meara: Good.
Kaitlin: Yeah, it's good as long as you follow my rules, okay?
Leigheanna: What kind of rules? Because I was going to take a bath in peace before you called me.
Kaitlin: How impatient you are! Why can't you just wait before I finish talking? Anyway, you can go and take your bath in the guests' bathroom after I'm done talking.
Leigheanna: Okay.
Kaitlin: Dinner will be around 8pm and one of you has to take care of it. Take your time to show Leigheanna how the kitchen works. Please tell me you can cook something.
Leigheanna: I could try and make pasta.
Kaitlin: Is it that? I thought Bridgette taught you how to cook.
Leigheanna: She's always too busy to even cook herself. Usually, it's Taylor who cooks meals.
Kaitlin: I understand. I hope you have the decency not to burn my kitchen down, though.
Leigheanna: Okay... if you say so...
Kaitlin: I'm not joking, Leigheanna. Please take care of the girls and their dinner. And, Alaria, I really hope you and the others aren't going to throw parties when I'm out.
Alaria: Parties? Why? We'll just stay round and chill in front of the TV.
Kaitlin: I hope you won't disappoint me, girls. I'm not keen on punishing anyone else after Neva and Lindsay.
Meara: We got it, Mom. Don't worry.
Kaitlin: Okay, girls, have a good night. For God's sake, don't smoke and don't get drunk. I'll catch you.
Meara: Good night.
Kaitlin leaves the house, after which Leigheanna immediately rushes upstairs to take her bath.
Alaria: Don't forget you have to cook!
Meara: Alaria, it's her first day here. Let her be. I'll cook dinner.
Alaria: I don't wanna eat burnt steak frites again!
Lindsay: Speak for yourself. The hamburgers she made for my last party were delicious!
Elyce: Yeah, 'cause she might have bought them...
Meara: Shut the fuck up!
Lindsay: You know, Ellie, you need to have a little more faith in her...
Elyce: Don't call me Ellie!
Lindsay: I'm calling you how I want!
Alaria: Oh, God, why can't you stop it? I think I'm going to smoke outside.
Lindsay: You know you can't, Alaria. Mom said-
Alaria: Mom isn't God! Please let me go!
With that said, Alaria goes to the rear garden and starts inhaling smoke from her cigarette.
8pm
Phone call between Kaitlin and the unknown person from two days ago
Kaitlin: Please, answer. I need to give you the last set of instructions before enacting the plan. Come on.
???: What's the problem, now? I'm supposed to have dinner. Better say, consider yourself lucky as my parents are going out for the night, or else...
Kaitlin: Okay, I guess I'll take those words seriously. I'm lucky, aren't I? Anyway, did you save Leigheanna's number?
???: Leigheanna? Who is, excuse me?
Kaitlin: I'm not very keen on giving further explanation, so listen carefully. Leigheanna is my niece. She's the person you have to call. Make sure to be nice and to introduce yourself. I don't want her to be overly suspicious.
???: I know, I know. If that's 702... blah blah blah...
Kaitlin: Repeat it, so that I'm sure you followed my instructions.
???: 702-198-5562.
Kaitlin: Okay. I've underestimated you, which I shouldn't have done. Good job, I have to say.
???: Thank you.
Kaitlin: Don't bask at your glory yet. There are still many things to do. Remember to call her every night, try to make plans to meet one day. When you're done with that step, we'll move to Phase 2.
???: Okay.
Kaitlin: Oh, one last thing: don't call her straight tonight. Let her adjust to what's waiting for her.
???: If you say so... Anyway, my dinner got cold. Do you think I can go or what?
Kaitlin: Wow, you're such irritable. Go, anyway. We're done for today. I'll call you soon.
???: Bye.
