Chapter 25

Bridgette is startled as she receives a call from Sheriff Kees from Arlington, Virginia, informing her about what Kaitlin did earlier to her own daughter. However, she still has several questions to ask him.

Bridgette: Are you sure?

Kees: Oh, yes.

Bridgette: Who gave you my number?

Kees: Mrs Harlan's daughter - your niece, I suppose - gave it to me.

Bridgette: And how did you track her?

Kees: One of the kids who was assaulted called 911 and probably gave them your sister's address. The other one warned me afterwards... and I know him very well...

Bridgette: So, this means that one of the boys is-

Kees: My son. I know you're surprised, madam, but you shouldn't. After all, we're talking about your own sister. Why on hell would she do that?

Bridgette: It's a long story. Too long to be told on the phone. Let's just say she has always been attracted by perverse schemes.

Kees: That's... creepy.

Bridgette: Oh. Is there anything else I can do for you?

Kees: No. I'll call you later in case I find her. Thank you for your time.

Bridgette: You're welcome.

As Bridgette hangs up, she notices that Abbie is still standing by the threshold of Leigheanna's room, where she's staying. The woman and the young girl exchange worried glances, but then Abbie gulps, knowing that Neva is in serious trouble.

Abbie: What happened to Neva?

Bridgette: Well... Kaitlin has hurt her badly. The Sheriff called me to inform me about this.

Abbie: That's terrible! I need to go back home-

Bridgette: No way. You're much safer here, trust me.

Abbie: But, Aunt, Neva needs me!

Bridgette: Come on, Abbie. Just rest, okay?

Abbie: I-

Bridgette: Everything is going to be okay. Now, please go to bed. I don't want to see you like that.

Even though she'd like to go and rescue her sister, Abbie knows that Bridgette is right, after all, and accepts that she has to sleep. She closes the door behind her and lets herself drop on the bed.

But Sin City doesn't want to sleep. In particular, there is a group of young adults who wants to stay up all night long. In particular, among them, there are a blue-haired girl and a cocky guy with long hair. Those two people are named respectively Leigheanna Macias and Rowan Killip.

Why on Earth they ended up meeting in person, they're the only ones to know. Still, the other guys and girls want to know everything, starting from Leigheanna's best friends, Leslie and Aaron.

Leslie: You never told me that you found someone special...

Leigheanna: Leslie, I think I already made it clear on the phone. We're not a couple.

Taylor: Ahem...

Taylor clears his throat, trying to remind his sister that she actually kissed Rowan, but he only earns a glare and a roll of eyes. Though, this won't stop him and Leslie from insisting.

Leslie: But you're blushing...

Aaron: Oohhh... Breaking news! Leigheanna Macias is blushing!

Leigheanna: Oohh... Breaking news! I'm gonna smash some heads on the floor if you don't stop teasing me!

Now it's Taylor's turn teasing Leigheanna. He, as well as his own friends, Riley, Bailey and Alaena, is happy to see that his sister is finally showing her true feelings.

Taylor: Who said that my little sister is an insensitive bitch?

Leigheanna: Stop it!

Alaena: Oh, come on, Taylor. Don't be so hard on her.

Riley: So hard? Have you seen her face, Alaena?

Leigheanna's face is so red that it even looks like it's going to explode sooner or later.

Aaron: Oh, come on, guys, let's stop.

Leigheanna: For once, I agree with you, Aaron.

Leslie: You know we can talk, right, Leighy?

Leigheanna: I know, I know. But I'd like to rest a little bit.

Taylor: That's okay. After all, you and Rowan drove all day long.

However, not everyone is happy with Leigheanna preferring to go straight to bed. In particular, Bailey, Aaron and Alaena would like her and Rowan to stay round and have a drink.

Bailey: Are you sure you want to go to bed, Granny?

Leigheanna: Oh, come on. Stop it.

Bailey: Sorry...

Bailey rolls his eyes, while Leslie starts pouring drinks on glasses.

Leslie: Who wants a Martini?

Alaena: I'd like one.

Aaron: Just one, Alaena?

Alaena: Touché.

Riley: Haha. Taylor, you want one?

Taylor: Hmm... maybe one or two...

Everyone is laughing and mingling in the conversation, including Rowan, who seems to enjoy himself with Leigheanna and her friends.

Rowan: Your friends are fun, Leighy.

Leigheanna: Yeah, they're a bit nuts, but, after all, we're all friends.

Rowan: Shall we have a drink?

Leigheanna: I'm gonna take care of them, don't worry.

She pours whiskey and Coke on two glasses and hands one to Rowan. He takes it gladly, showing a thirty-two-teeth smile.

As they start sipping their drinks, however, Leigheanna's phone is ringing. She expects an annoyed reaction from Rowan; though, he just laughs.

Rowan: I think you're becoming way too popular. Why is everyone calling you?

Leigheanna: Who knows?

Phone call between Bridie and Leigheanna

Bridie: Leighy?

Leigheanna: Bridie!

Bridie: Well... I think we've just arrived to Las Vegas. Do you think we can meet?

Leigheanna: Right now, I'm with my friends... do you think you can wait a little bit?

Bridie: We could just meet where you are, do you agree?

Leigheanna: Okay. I'm gonna text you the address. Hold on.

Leigheanna puts the call on hold for a moment and texts 15 Monroe Drive. As she hits send, she overhears her friends calling her.

Leslie: Leighy! Are you coming?

Leigheanna: Just a minute.

Before rejoining Leslie and the others, Leigheanna reprises the call and addresses again to Bridie.

Leigheanna: Have you seen my text message?

Bridie: Oh, yeah. I've just told Meara to search it on Google Maps.

Leigheanna: Meara?

Bridie: Oh, yeah. She and the others decided to flee from Kaitlin's.

Leigheanna: And where are they going?

Bridie: Honestly, I don't know. They haven't mentioned that.

Leigheanna: Perhaps they're trying to find some relatives...

Bridie: ...You mean their parents.

Leigheanna: Parents? I thought Aunt Preslea was dead, and Uncle Rick wouldn't want to deal with them anymore...

Bridie: I guess that's another of Kaitlin's lies...

Leigheanna: That's enough! As soon as you show me all the proof, I'm gonna ask Mom and Dad for further explanation!

Bridie: I'm sure they'll understand. By the way, see you later.

Leigheanna: See you.

As the phone call ends, Leigheanna turns back to Rowan and the rest of the group and restarts sipping her whiskey and Coke, pretending that nothing serious happened over the phone.
