Chapter 19

Bridie is nervous and doesn't know how to tell Alaria that, if she want to talk to Leigheanna, she has to reach her in Las Vegas. She's tucking a strand of her hair and curling it on her finger. She's trembling because she knows that, if she says anything wrong, Alaria won't be likely to talk to her again.

Bridie: I have to call her, before things get worse.

Before she can dial Alaria's number, though, she's caught by surprise as the Devil in person is calling her. Yes, Kaitlin. The woman who made many lives miserable with lies and abuse.

Phone call between Kaitlin and Bridie

Kaitlin: Tell me this is a joke!

Bridie: I don't even know what are you talking about, Kaitlin. Also, you're disturbing me. Stop it!

Kaitlin: Don't talk to me like that!

Bridie: Oh, sorry, Your Majesty. How shall I address you, instead?

Kaitlin: Do I sound like I'm joking? You'd better stop, you insolent brat, otherwise-

Bridie: Otherwise what? You know I can denounce you, Kaitlin. I have all the proof. Yeah, my father works for a security company and had his most loyal co-workers install cameras in all the houses in the area! You're in huge trouble, darling, big time.

Kaitlin: You! You won't get away with what you d-

Bridie: Bye-bye!

Bridie hangs up without letting Kaitlin say anything more. After the dreadful call is over, she gulps as soon as she hears the noise of a car stopping by. As the door opens, it reveals a frantic Alaria sweating incessantly and even going as far as stuttering. Her face is as red as a tomato, and her eyes are wide open.

Alaria: I've looked for Elyce, but...

Bridie: You found nothing. I know, it's hard.

Alaria: Though, she left a note. Here it is.

Alaria hands Bridie a crumpled piece of paper, where the phrase, "I know the truth. Now, it's time to find it. E," is written with a black felt-tip pen. Bridie's eyes widen in shock as she knows that Elyce is nowhere near being willing to approach the rest of the family ever again.

Meanwhile, another car door opens, and Meara is also found to be on the car. Next to her, there's a trembling Ainsleigh, who's crying her eyes out after living her childhood under a cloak of lies.

Meara: So... we just have to wait till Lindsay leaves the hospital. Then, we can run away.

Bridie: Thank God she's still alive! I though Kaitlin would hit her so hard that she could die!

Meara: I guess she was lucky. Maybe she shielded her with her pillow.

Alaria: Yeah, it was covered with blood. Anyway, any idea of where we could go? I don't want Kaitlin to track us.

Bridie: She won't be able to do anything, as soon as I hand all the proof to Leigheanna.

Meara: Leigheanna? Why should she help us? We don't get on well at all!

Bridie: She's the only one who has enough power to stop Kaitlin. She ran away to come up with a plan, and enjoy her summer!

Alaria: I hate saying this, but Bridie is right, Meara. We have to trust our cousin.

Meara: Well, I actually trust her. The problem is, what about the others?

Alaria: Don't worry. Everything will be sorted out.

Bridie: Wow. I'm glad that you think exactly like me. Come on. Let's hope that doctors will let Lindsay go and then we can find Leigheanna in Las Vegas.

Alaria: Excuse me?

Bridie: Yes. She's headed to Las Vegas. Are you okay with going to Sin City?

Ainsleigh: Oh, yes! Please, Alaria, please. Can we go?

Alaria: You're too young to go there!

Meara: But, Alaria, where else can we go? Please, think about it.

Actually, Alaria doesn't even need to think of it. That's the only way to get in touch with Leigheanna and run away from Kaitlin at the same time. She sighs, before glancing back at her sisters and at Bridie.

Alaria: Okay. Let's go, before Kaitlin catches us.

Bridie: Perfect. I'm gonna set Google Maps, or else we'll get lost.

As Bridie, Alaria and the others are about to leave their horror-laden, small-town life before for good, Leslie is impatient as she is ready to tell her friend Leigheanna about all her flirts and crazy adventures in Las Vegas with the rest of the group.

She looks a little guilty for messing with her friend on the phone, but then she just laughs it off, not wanting to look sad.

As she pours herself a drink, she lets out a sigh and starts looking around, only to notice that she's almost spilling the drink on the floor.

Leslie: Oops. I gotta clean this mess up or else Taylor will go crazy!

Knowing that he's quite obsessed with cleaning and tidiness, she takes a couple of handkerchiefs and cleans the spot of the floor where the drink stain is before it becomes all sticky.

She throws them in the trash bin nearby, but, as she does so, she hears the phone ringing and vibrating. She picks it up, hoping it's Leigheanna. In fact, she's rejoiced as her name pops up on the screen.

Phone call between Leigheanna and Leslie

Leigheanna: Hello, Les. How are you?

Leslie: Fine. I was just chilling and having a drink. Anyway, when are you coming?

While asking this question, Leslie is giggling excitedly like a thirteen-year-old bumping on her middle school crush.

Leigheanna: Les, are you okay?

Leslie: Oh, sorry. By the way, when are you coming, seriously?

Leigheanna: Just one hour. I'll ask Taylor to text me the address, so that we can finally meet again!

Leslie: Yeah, I'm so excited!

Leigheanna: Don't get too pumped up... I have a whole lot of things to tell you. You won't believe them!

Leslie: Oh, speaking of those. What about your parents? I guess they know, right.

Leigheanna hesitates, knowing that she's telling a half-lie.

Leigheanna: Oh, yeah... they know. I've talked to them about coming to Vegas.

Leslie: Great! At least you ran away from that horror house.

Leigheanna: Please, don't mention it again. I just want to enjoy myself for once!

Leslie: And this is what we're going to do. See you later!

Leigheanna: See you!
