Chapter 18

Taylor is astonished as his father reveals that he can't find Leigheanna. How come? Isn't she supposed to be on her way back home with Dave?

Taylor: What are you even talking about?

Dave: Let me explain. I picked up Leigheanna back in Arlington and-

Taylor: Did Kaitlin do anything to her? I swear that she-

Dave: She only bruised her face, luckily. But things could've gone much worse, trust me. Anyway, we were driving back home, when she had the silly idea of stopping at a motel for the night. We fell asleep, but, when I woke up, I couldn't find her anymore!

Taylor: Dad, stop panicking!

Dave: She could've been kidnapped! You know what? I'm gonna call 911!

Taylor: No way. You're going to call Leighy first.

Dave: Are you stupid or what? She's gone!

Taylor: She might've brought her phone with her. Come on, try calling her.

Dave: Okay. But, if she doesn't answer, I'll call your mother, then I'm gonna report everything to 911!

Taylor: Just promise you'll call her before doing anything else.

Dave: Okay, okay. I'm gonna call her now.

Taylor: Thank you. Bye.

Dave: Bye.

The conversation ends and Taylor can go back to having cocktails with his friends. Suddenly, Aaron, who has just finished his drink, dives in the pool, splashing the rest of the group and soaking the poor Leslie to the skin.

Leslie: Aaron! You idiot!

Aaron: What?

Leslie: You splashed me! Now I have to pick another outfit!

Alaena: Don't worry, Les. I can help you. Come inside.

The two girls go back indoors to change their wet clothes, while the boys keep laughing at the huge prank played on them.

Taylor: That was great, dude.

Aaron: Thanks.

Taylor: Where are Bailey and Riley?

Aaron: Who knows?

Taylor: I guess we'll catch them at lunch. Come on, let's go.

While the two boys also leave the pool, Dave is pacing back and forth at the desolate gas station in the middle of nowhere.

As he's clutching nervously his phone, he stares at the screen, realizing that he has to call Leigheanna to sort things out and possibly apologize to her.

He can't leave things as they are, but how is he supposed to have his daughter listen to him after what happened?

Dave: I mustn't hesitate anymore. I have to call her.

He dials Leigheanna's number, hoping to get an immediate answer, but the phone is beeping incessantly. After a seemingly endless time, he finally receives an answer.

Phone call between Dave and Leigheanna

Leigheanna: Huh?

Dave: Tell me where are you, young lady, or else...

Leigheanna: You can't punish me! I'm 19, how many times do I have to tell you?

Dave: Just tell me where you are and we'll be fine.

Leigheanna: Okay. I'm driving to Las Vegas with a friend.

Dave: Don't lie to me, Leigheanna.

Leigheanna: Hahaha! Do you still think I'm lying? I'm telling the fucking truth, Dad. There's this guy I met over the phone, and we-

Dave: You what?

Leigheanna: Can you try not to interrupt, please? I'm saying, I met this guy over the phone. As I was bored, I kept calling him till he had the idea of tracking me, picking me up at the motel and then driving me to Vegas. Just a few hours and we're there!

Dave: How could you-

Leigheanna: Sorry, Dad, but we've got to stop for lunch. See you-

Dave: Leigheanna, what you're doing is extremely dangerous! Have you gone nuts? You know your mother and I don't like hitchhiking!

Leigheanna: Oh, come on, Dad! Mom told me you did that a lot when you were at college!

Dave: And when would she tell you?

Leigheanna: It doesn't matter. Don't worry, Daddy, I'll call you as soon as I meet Taylor. See you!

Before Dave can say another word, Leigheanna hangs up, leaving him distraught. Defeated, he gets on his car and vows to go back home before dusk, as he doesn't want to face Bridgette's anger for him coming back home so late and, moreover, without their daughter.

On the other hand, Leigheanna is jubilant. Her plan worked to perfection and not only did she leave Kaitlin and her psycho drama behind, but she also managed to get what she wanted, showing that she can bend the strict rules set by her family.

Rowan: Was that one of your parents?

Leigheanna: Oh, it was just my father.

Rowan: "Just" your father? He could've grounded you for life!

Leigheanna: I don't care anymore. I'm 19, I shouldn't even live with my parents at this stage of my life.

Rowan: You know what? I left home at 16. I was fed up with all that shit.

Leigheanna: What shit? Is your family involved?

Rowan: You may not want to hear that.

Leigheanna: Come on, Rowan, you know so much of my messed-up life. It's your turn, now.

Rowan: Okay, I'll tell you. But you have to promise you won't tell anyone.

Leigheanna: I'll try...

As Rowan is about to tell the story of his life, however, Leigheanna's phone is ringing once again.

Rowan: Leighy, I think your whole family is looking for you...

Leigheanna: It could be... Though, it's not my mother, don't worry.

Rowan: Who it is?

Leigheanna: Honestly, I don't know. I'm gonna answer the phone, anyway.

Phone call between Leigheanna and Bridie

Leigheanna: Hello, who is it?

Bridie: Oh, Leigheanna. Thank God you answered! I need your help!

Leigheanna: Bridie. Take a breather.

Bridie: Sorry, it's that things have gone out of control here.

Leigheanna: What?

Bridie: Kaitlin beat Meara and Lindsay up, and now one is gone and the other is at the hospital!

Leigheanna: Bridie, that's terrible! Have you found anything else?

Bridie: Oh, yes. You may not like what I found...

Leigheanna: That's terrible! Okay, listen, why don't you leave that place? Otherwise, you'll still be in Kaitlin's sight and she could harm you.

Bridie: And where could I go?

Leigheanna: Just buy a ticket to Las Vegas. I'm headed there.

Bridie: What?

Leigheanna: Trust me. I know what to do. I don't think Kaitlin will find us there, or at least you.

Bridie: If so, I've got to tell Alaria. She's also on the run.

Leigheanna: Why?

Bridie: It's a long story.

Leigheanna: Oh, okay.

Bridie: In that case, I'll call you later. Good luck!

Leigheanna: Break a leg.
