Chapter 14
Tension is rising as Meara points her finger at Kaitlin, claiming to have caught her "mother" red-handed. Kaitlin, unlike the usual, is losing her composure as she is scowling at the girl who thought to be her daughter.
Kaitlin: First of all, shut your fucking mouth or I'll shut it with tape! Secondly, how dare you talk to me like that? I'm your mother, remember that! Thirdly, since you bothered me all the time and lacked respect towards me, you're going to sleep in the basement since tonight. Did you understand?
Meara: No.
Kaitlin: Don't you dare challenge me, little bastard!
With that said, she picks up a broom and beats Meara up with no mercy. The latter tries to shield herself, but to no avail, as she falls on the floor, bonking her head. Even though the girl is crying loud, Kaitlin doesn't look like she wants to stop as she extracts a belt and starts hitting her. When Meara tries to stand up, Kaitlin hits her face.
Kaitlin: You're just a piece of scum and a liar! You should consider yourself lucky that I let you live when I took you away from your parents. I could have killed you and your sisters there and then.
Meara: I won't let you act that way again! You'll pay for what you did!
With that said, she stands up, still shaking, and tries to walk out of that horror house. Kaitlin is blocking her path with every single mean, yet she's caught by surprise as Meara kicks her lower parts. The woman falls on her back, being unable to stand up there and then.
Meara: Fuck you, bitch.
Meara takes advantage of her alleged mother's position to run away as fast as she can, though she's struggling since her head is still aching and her legs are sore. As soon as she's out and quite far from that horror house, she immediately extracts her phone from her pocket - luckily for her, its screen hasn't cracked - to call someone.
Phone call between Meara and Alaria
Meara: Alaria, where are you?
Alaria is still sleepy. When her sister called, in fact, she was still in bed.
Alaria: Do you really have to call me such late? Where are you?
Meara: I left.
Alaria: What? Have you gone nuts? Why on Earth have you decided to leave without telling me?
Meara: I did what I could. Kaitlin hit me quite hard, to be honest - my head is sore! Ouch!
Alaria: What happened? Do I have to chop that bitch's head off?
Meara: Not necessarily. Try to get out of that house before she recovers and catches you.
Alaria: Did you take something with you?
Meara: Just my phone, and the keys. That's it.
Alaria: You left your wallet at home! What? Are you mad?
Meara: I had no time to take it! One more hesitation, and I swear she could've killed me!
Alaria: Okay. I'll do what I can. Just wait for me. I'll take the car and we can run away together.
Meara: That sounds like a plan. But, first, we have to denounce that fag.
Alaria: As if it were easy! We don't have enough proof that she's an abuser! She made us swear to keep our mouths shut and disposed of all the evidence!
Meara: Oh, but I've got some. Let's meet, so that I can show you something I found this morning.
Alaria: Great. Then, see you later.
While Alaria is planning the Great Runaway with Meara, possibly involving some of her other siblings, Leigheanna couldn't care less about her psycho aunt as she's thinking of whether she should accept to meet Rowan or rather she'd better go back home with her father and spend an uneventful summer.
Leigheanna: I have to decide whether to accept Rowan's proposal. I mean, he definitely seems a good guy, though I don't know him very well. But, if I go back home, what if I never get to see or talk to him ever again? I can't decide!
She's tucking a strand of her messy blue hair behind her left ear all while she's biting her bottom lip.
Leigheanna: I must call him. I can't let him wait forever for an answer.
Phone call between Leigheanna and Rowan
Leigheanna: Let's hope he answers now. Otherwise, I'll just have some sleep. Hi.
Rowan: Leighy. At last, you called me.
Leigheanna: Oh, yeah, I decided to call you because... uh...
Rowan: Are you okay?
Leigheanna: Y-yes, I think...
Rowan: Hahaha... I think you're cute when you stutter.
Leigheanna: Oh, stop it!
Rowan: Oh, I guess it's time to talk about serious stuff. Have you made a decision yet?
Leigheanna: About what?
Rowan: Seriously? Did you really forget that? About meeting!
Leigheanna: Oh, sorry...
Rowan: Don't worry, I'll forgive you.
Leigheanna: Hahaha... I was just messing with you a little bit!
Rowan: You little-
Leigheanna: Shhh. Don't scowl. I already know when someone is about to scowl on the phone.
Rowan: How do you-
Leigheanna: I know when someone is about to scowl when they abruptly raise their voice.
Rowan: Oh, I didn't know. Sorry.
Leigheanna: You don't need to apologize, Rowan. It's okay.
Rowan: Yes. Anyway, have you decided?
Leigheanna: Well, I couldn't make a proper decision until you asked me insistently.
Rowan: So?
Leigheanna: I think I can go and meet you in person for the very first time.
Rowan: Maybe it won't even be the last...
Leigheanna: Who knows? Anyway, when are you planning to come? We need to leave before my father wakes up, otherwise I'm screwed.
Rowan: Oh, that sucks. I'll try to come as soon as possible. Maybe even before dawn comes.
Leigheanna: Please, don't get into trouble. I don't want you to face it because of me.
Rowan: I promise I'll stay safe.
Leigheanna: Good. So, see you-
Rowan: Wait.
Leigheanna: What?
Rowan: Before you hang up, just one more thing. I'm gonna call you as soon as I arrive, so make sure you can answer, okay?
Leigheanna: Okay.
Rowan: Have a good night. You'll need to sleep well.
Leigheanna: Good night.
As soon as she hangs up and drops herself on the mattress in that motel room, Leigheanna is slowly realizing that she's getting the golden chance of the summer, and that she mustn't waste it.
