Chapter 88

"How was honeymooning?" Rora asked Matt, who had entered her house.

"Just amazing. Here, I got you a souvenir." He replied, handing her a bracelet.

"Oh, thanks! How's Daisy?"

"She's alright. Tired." Matt smiled. "But happy. God, I'm so happy."

Rora smiled. "A bit of a shotgun wedding, though."

"I know it was. But, come on, you expect me to have a child out of wedlock?"

"It's not that big of a deal. Mom and dad didn't get married until after you were born." Rora shrugged.

"They are sinners in the eyes of God."

Rora rolled her eyes. "I know damn well you've never even touched a bible. Let alone gone to church."

Matt laughed. "Yeah, I know. I was kidding. Anyway, the nursery is done. All we have to do now is wait for our little baby girl. We chose out a name and everything."

"What's the name?"

"Not telling. You might steal it."

Rora stared at him. "Right. Your baby is due in 3 months, but me... the non-pregnant woman... might steal the name."

Matt nodded, as Colleen came in, followed by Pidge and Sam, looking grave.

"Hey, mom." Rora smiled.

"Oh, good, Matthew's here. Sit down, you two."

The two sat. "What's up?" Matt asked.

Colleen took a breath. "Nonna's in hospital. She's very unwell."

Rora stared at her. "What happened?"

"She's had a stroke. She's very old, they don't think she's going to make it." Sam said.

Matt's smile faded. "Oh, God."

"A stroke?" Rora asked, quietly. "Lord..."

"We're on our way to visit. We weren't sure if Matt would be back yet, but seeing as you're both here, I think you two should come. You never know when it's the last time." Colleen said. Pidge was quiet next to her, sniffling sadly.

"Yes, mom. Absolutely." Matthew said. "Anything for Nonna."

As the family headed to the car, Rora grabbed Pidge's hand and gave it a gentle squeeze. "You okay?" she whispered.

Pidge looked up, shook her head briefly, and the two headed to the car.

"This is my wife, Linda." Mateo smiled. "The kids are just at school, but they'll be back soon."

"It's nice to meet you finally, Linda." Kassy smiled. She reached out a hand, but Linda, instead, hugged her and kissed both of her cheeks.

"No, no, the pleasure is mine. Gosh, don't you look like your father? And your eyes are such a lovely colour."

Kassy smiled. "Thank you."

Mateo put his bag down, and went into it. "Damn it. I've left some important documents at work."

Linda turned to him. "How important?"

"Important enough for me to need them for Monday. Oh, Kassy, I'm so sorry to leave you, but would you mind staying here with Linda while I just ran back to my office to grab them?"

"It's no problem at all." she smiled.

"Perfect. Thank you, Cariño. I'll be back as soon as I can." Mateo left.

Kassy waved him off, and turned to Linda, who was scowling.

"So, where are you from originally, Linda?"

Linda shot a glare in her direction. "I don't have to pretend to like you now he's not here. I'd prefer it if you stayed silent in my house."

Kassy looked at her in surprise. "Pardon?"

"I don't approve of any of this. I didn't want his little whore child walking into his life like she belonged there, but he insisted on being the father you, quote unquote, 'deserved'."

Kassy was surprised for a moment, before she glared at the woman. "I can't believe this. I hoped we could be friends, you know? I may be his 'whore child', but I'm still very much a person, with feelings, and thoughts, and memories. I deserve a family!"

"Well, we aren't it. At the very least, I'm not, and neither are my sons. I have to protect them."

"Protect them from what?"

"From the confusion you'll cause them. You wouldn't understand what it is to be a mother and have to consider things such as these, though."

Kassy stared at her in disbelief. "I don't understand what it means to protect my children?" she laughed. "You are aware my son spent his first few months on a warship? In the middle of a space war?"

She stared at her. "Wait, you have a son?"

"And a daughter, yes, did my father not tell you?"

She shook her head. "No. He didn't mention that."

"Huh." Kassy said. "Well, regardless. You don't need to be rude to me. If you don't want to be friends, so be it. Let's just sit in silence now, hm?"

The Holts were sat outside the hospital room, having had said their goodbyes. They sat in complete silence.

Matt cleared his throat. "Do you guys wanna go for food after this?"

"Matt, Nonna's dying and you're thinking about food?" Rora replied.

"No. I just wanted something a little nicer to be coming up. Plus... family time."

Colleen looked at him. "That'll be lovely, Matt."

A nurse came out. He looked over the family.

"Well?" Colleen asked.

"I'm afraid she has passed away."

Colleen teared up, and nodded. "Right."

"I'll give you all a moment."

They were left alone again, and Pidge hugged her knees to her chest. Sam put an arm around Colleen, and Matt went to sit with Pidge.

"She's not in pain anymore." Matt said, not to anyone in particular; just trying to dull the pain with a stock phrase.

"I suppose not." Rora replied, sighing sadly. "To think it was so sudden..." she turned to Pidge. "I'm sorry, Pidge. You were the closest to her out of the three of us."

Pidge sniffled. "I-I can't believe she's gone."

Matt gave a solemn nod. Then, Daisy came in.

"Hey." she murmured.

"Hey, babe." Matt quietly replied. She wrapped her arms around his neck, and kissed his cheek. He rubbed her back.

"Is she gone?" she whispered. Matt nodded.

Rora pulled Pidge into a tight hug. The latter broke down into tears, her head in Rora's shoulder. She kissed her little sister's forehead, making comforting 'shh' sounds.

Colleen and Sam joined the hug, then Matt. The family stayed within each other's arms.
