Chapter 6
"What are we drinking this week, Kass?" Coran asked.
"It's Kassy. And this week it's a mojito."
"Why can't I call you Kass?"
She shrugged. "Just don't really like it."
He nodded, taking a seat, and grabbing one of the cocktails. "Mm. Right, get that music on. Ive been thinking about this all week. Music is much better when you're slightly tiddly."
Kassy played the music. "Oh, my God, did you hear Lance the other day?"
"Singing in his room? Ha! Keith was in stitches!"
She laughed. "I can imagine. What's their deal anyway?"
Coran shrugged. "Not sure. Can't tell."
She nodded. "Oh! And I noticed him and Rora talking on the beach, after all of us came back in. What's that about?"
"No clue. Bless her, it's difficult losing your sibling and your father in one go."
"Kinda more difficult being tortured by the Galra."
"She's aware of that. And that's why it's awful for her. All she can do is worry at the minute."
Kassy nodded.
Before long, Hunk had heard the sound of ABBA, which seemingly summoned him.
"Is that ABBA?"
"Yes."
"Oh my God, ABBA are like, my favourites of all time. I'm getting everyone else."
"But it's cocktail and gossip time!" Coran said.
"Well, now it's ABBA time."
Coran sighed and turned back to Kassy as Hunk ran off. "So, what's Kassy short for?"
"Kassiopeia." she pulled a face. "I kinda hate my name."
"Why? Cassiopeia is a beautiful constellation, and makes for a beautiful name too."
"I don't know. It's kinda long. Kinda got bullied because my name isn't Jane."
"Why would you ever put your child through the abuse of being called Jane?" Coran shook his head. "What's your full name, then?"
"Kassiopeia Eira Blackwood."
"Flows nicely. Like my name! Coran Hieronymus Wimbleton Smythe!"
"Wow. That is certainly... a name."
"We heard ABBA is playing." Rora said. "Keith is super happy about that."
"Keith is always super happy." Lance said. "What's new there?"
"I don't even like ABBA." Keith muttered.
"Oh, come on, Keith, everyone likes ABBA. It's like, a rule of being human." Hunk said. "Even Pidge likes ABBA."
"It's true, I do."
"You're having mojitos?" Keith asked, suddenly interested.
"Yes, and you're not 21, so you're not having one."
Rora raised a hand. "Well, I'm not 21, but also I've been spending the last year of my life in the UK, so technically there it's legal for me to drink."
"Well, I'm over 600! Is that allowed?" Coran asked.
"Ummm... yes, Coran, that's fine. Rora... do what you want."
"Hold up, that's not fair, we could all drink in the UK. Well, except Pidge." Lance said.
"It's whatever. In the UK, half of them are drinking by the time they're 14 anyway." Rora added.
"Oh, guys, shut up, this is my favourite song." Hunk said as The Winner Takes it All started to play.
"This is my favourite song, too." Kassy smiled.
"Just look at her. I knew she'd have good taste." Hunk shook his head.
"Where's Shiro? He's missing all the excitement." Pidge said.
"I'll go find him." Kassy said. Admittedly, everyone crowding around made her feel slightly overwhelmed.
She found Shiro in his room, completely silent, staring at the wall.
"Hey, Shiro, you okay?" she asked.
He didn't reply to her, just staring ahead. She inched closer.
"Shiro?" she reached and lightly touched his arm. The minute she did, he lashed out, pushing her away harshly.
"Leave me alone! You won't hurt me!"
Slightly stunned for a moment, she shook herself off. "Shiro, it's Kassy." she thought for a moment, taking a breath. "You're here, on the castle. You're having a flashback."
The only reason she knew what was happening, of course, is because she had experienced the same thing.
"It's okay. I'm going to sit next to you, okay?" She slowly made her away towards him, sitting next to him. "It's okay. Breathe with me." she thought about how he'd helped her when she'd had a panic attack; and tried to follow what he'd done there.
"I don't want to. I don't trust you. You're some- you're some apparition they've out here to confuse me."
"Hey, hey, shhh. It's okay. Take some deep breaths, Shiro, and try to calm down."
She glanced down at his shaking hand, and waited for him to calm. After a few minutes, he looked down.
"They were back." he mumbled. "And stronger than ever. I was being hurt all over again."
Kassy nodded. "I promise they're not here." she whispered. "Can I take your hand?"
"No. I only have one left."
"Not like that."
He gave a shaky laugh. "I know. You can."
She grabbed his hand, giving it a gentle squeeze. "That's it. Just keep breathing. I'm right here."
Shiro turned to her. "I'm so sorry, Kassy. I didn't want to lash out at you like that."
"Shiro, it's okay. Don't worry."
"I didn't hurt you, did I?"
She shook her head. "Not badly."
He teared up. "I should never have gone on that fucking mission." he whispered, his voice breaking slightly.
Kassy frowned, opening her arms. He fell into them, burying his head into her shoulder. He wasn't crying, at least not hard enough for her to notice, but she rubbed his back gently, saying nothing for a few minutes.
"If you're feeling up to it... there's mojitos and ABBA in the kitchen."
He laughed again, lifting his head. "You do know how to make things better, don't you?"
