Chapter 17

Shiro had rushed Kassy straight to Coran, who was again, up listening to ABBA and reading a book.

"She's having contractions!"

"Hm? Contractions? Have your waters broken?" Coran asked.

She shook her head.

"How far apart are they?"

"I don't know, they're... they're kind sporadic." She replied.

"Yeah, you'll be fine. Go to bed and see how you are in the morning."

"What?"

"Well, you can start contracting days before you give birth. It's better to just wait it out." he returned to his book, waving them off. "Get some rest. You'll need it if you're having the baby soon."

Slightly deflated from their panic, the two returned to bed.

"You realise that soon we'll have our baby?" she asked Shiro.

"One last final push before then." he replied. "Literally."

She smiled, getting back into bed. "Night."

"Night, Kassy."

Keith and Lance were up bright and early, and ran into each other in the kitchen.

"Oh, morning, Keith."

Keith didn't reply verbally, just nodding briefly and going to make coffee.

"Oh, right. Don't talk to Keith til he's had his coffee?"

Keith didn't reply, staring ahead of him.

"I forgot you've literally never said that in your life. What's up, moody?"

"Would you leave me alone, Lance?"

"What? Why?"

"Because, I'm asking you." he snapped.

"We haven't spoken properly since..."

"And I don't want to." Keith said. "So just lay off. K?"

Lance, looking hurt, backed away. "Right, dude, sure. If you regret it, I'll leave you alone. See you."

Keith watched as Lance walked away, shoulders slumped. He stopped making the coffee, and caught up to him.

"Lance, I don't regret it."

"Huh?"

"I don't regret it. I just..." he looked down, to disguise the red on his face. "I'm so bad at articulating, and-and saying what I need to say, that I can't even bring myself to tell you how little I regret it."

Lance half-smiled. "Looks like Sharpshooter shot an arrow into your heart, huh?" Keith looked up and gave him a wtf look. Lance laughed, taking his hand. "We don't need to rush into anything. But I'll be waiting for you."

He let go, and Keith watched as he wandered back to his room.

Shiro woke up to find Kassy doing her makeup. "Jesus Christ. You're literally in labour and you're doing your makeup?"

"I might not get the chance later. Plus, you already know you're the only one allowed to see my face naked."

He shook his head. "Why do you insist on doing your makeup every single day anyway? Isn't it annoying having to get up early?"

"Shiro, please, I'll be pushing a child out of my vagina soon, we don't need to analyse why I wear makeup every day." She stood up slowly. "Ooh-"

"Contraction?"

"Yeah. I think they're starting to get more often now."

He took her hand. "Let's get some breakfast. You should keep your strength up."

The two wandered to the kitchen, where Keith and Hunk were.

"Morning, Gorgeous, morning Shiro." Hunk called.

"Morning Hunk." she slowly took a seat.

"How are we this morning? Baby still in?"

"I should hope so." she laughed. "Ugh. I've been contracting all night, though."

Hunk turned in shock. "Contracting?! Like, you're in labour?!"

"Oh, yeah, but Coran says it's fine, so."

"You trust Coran?"

"He's the closest thing we have to a doctor, so yes. He's medically trained, right?" Kassy looked at him.

"Not to freak you out, but, I doubt Coran has ever delivered a baby."

"Oh, we'll burn that bridge when we get to it. Be a good yellow paladin and make me some tea."

Hunk got to making tea, and before long everyone had joined them for breakfast.

"So, what's on the agenda today, Coran?" Allura asked.

"Training, and the birth of Shiro and Kassy's child."

"Birth?"

Kassy nodded. "Lucky me- oh, ow! Fuck! Oh, Shiro give me your hand."

"I only have o-"

"Don't even." she shot him a glare, and he grabbed her hand as she breathed through it. "Oh, that was a bad one."

"So you've just been sat there contracting for the last half hour?" Lance asked.

"Mmhmm."

He paused. "Alright."

Kassy stood up, and as she did, her waters went.

"Oh, there we go." Kassy sighed. "Lucky me."

"Waters! Yep, I'd say you're officially good to go. Go to the medic bay." Coran said. Kassy wandered off, Shiro on her heel. Coran stayed and hummed, twiddling his moustache.

"Aren't you going with them?" Lance asked after a few minutes.

"What do you mean?"

"Aren't you delivering the baby?"

Coran paused, before dropping his tea all over the floor. "Quiznak."

"Coran? What's the matter?" Allura asked.

"It hadn't dawned on me that I'd be doing that as well. Oh, double quiznak. Does anyone else know anything about birth?!"

"No, Coran, that's just you." Keith replied. "You're the most qualified person here."

He looked down. "I don't think I can do it. I don't think I have the courage."

"Oh, for God's sake." Allura mumbled. "Kassy is about to give birth. She will be in debilitating pain soon, and you need to make sure everything goes smoothly. So snap out of it, and go help her."

Coran nodded. "Right. Got you." He got up to leave.

"How on Earth did this even happen? What kind of idiot thinks to... excuse my language, make love in a war?"

"Lotor, do what you want, but you shan't say a word against Kassiopeia Eira Blackwood while you're on my ship! Alright." Coran turned and left to the medic bay.

"There you are! We were thinking you'd bailed on us." Shiro said.

"No, no! Never even thought about it. Now, let's see. Seems like everything is moving forward nicely."

"We're gonna have a baby." Kassy mumbled.

"Yes, we are."
