book: Antigone

author: Sophocles

blurb: The curse placed on Oedipus lingers and haunts a younger generation in this new and brilliant translation of Sophocles' classic drama. The daughter of Oedipus and Jocasta, Antigone is an unconventional heroine who pits her beliefs against the King of Thebes in a bloody test of wills that leaves few unharmed. Emotions fly as she challenges the king for the right to bury her own brother. Determined but doomed, Antigone shows her inner strength throughout the play.

review: I haven't read anything for the past week or so, and have fallen into one of the worst reading slumps of my life. So I thought this Greek play, which is very short, would hopefully help me get out of it.

Boy did it help.

I really liked this play, and I thought it was full of so many interesting ideas and concepts. I loved the theme of honour and how it was presented in this play, as well as how strong Antigone was presented. I think I'm going to go back and read the plays which lead up to this one surrounding the character of Oedipus because they all sound wonderfully twisted and compelling. Overall, this was a great Greek play to get out of my slump.
