Chapter 1
Piling books on my desk again. Getting ready for finals and stuff like that. Ugh. Who knew that going to college was so hard? Oh! Wait! Me! I knew! Because people told me... Maybe I should listen to people more often and be less stubborn.
Ppppfff!! Like that will ever happen. Its who I am. If I didn't already inherit it myself its in my DNA. My parents are the same way. They're the ones that forced me to come to college and study to become a Doctor. And not just any doctor. A surgeon. Yeah. Plastic. You know... Putting squishy bags of ish in women's breast and making people less fat, giving guys a bigger sized... You know what I mean.
I look down at my stomach. "Do I need plastic surgery?" I let out a breath. "No you don't! Oh shut up Val. You're so stupid." I turn and laugh at my room mate. "Lauren. You don't know. Maybe I do" I drop my bag and walk towards her. "How was London?" I ask. She hugs me then let's out a breath. "You know. Same old same old. Parents fighting and them telling me I better become a great dentist." We release the hug. "I'm sorry." I say patting her back. She smiles.
"No no. Its fine. Anyways. How was your break." Uh. Don't even get. Me. Started.
I sit down on my bed on the right side of the room. "One word. Studying." I say laying back. She joins me on my bed. "Awe. I'm sorry Val. I guess we both had a pretty horrible break huh?" I turn and look at her. I never realized how really pretty she is. And she's been my room mate for two years.
She had light blonde hair cut above her small shoulders with side bangs. Light freckles on her peachy cheeks that complimented her gray eyes. She's way opposite of me. My skin is lightly tanned, or you could just say I'm light brown. What ever. My brown hair long to the small of my back. I don't know. I don't see myself as pretty. At least, compared to Lauren. Maybe I shouldn't compare. But its a habit, and every girl does it.
I let out a breath and look up at the ceiling. "Yeah. I don't know how I'm going to get through this year." I confess. I hear her chuckle. "Me neither." We lay there for a while. I finally look at her. "I just want you to know that you're my best friend." I tell her. She smiles, showing me her pearly white teeth. "You're my best friend too." She says. Actually. She was my only friend. That happens once you leave high school.
A lot of the people you thought were your friends just leave. But you understand. At least I understand. I don't want to be a burden to someone who wants to live their life that I have no purpose in. I furrow my eyebrows at the thought. I turn to look at her again. She's fast asleep, she must have had a long flight. I quietly get up from the bed and head over to my desk and sit down. Propping open one of my books.
Chapter 1
How to get ready for surgery.
I let out a stressful breath. "Its going to be a long night" I say to myself starting to read the chapter.
**
I can't take it anymore. Its around 10:30 at night and I don't feel like reading the book anymore. I read five whole chapters. I look over at Lauren whose sitting on her bed on the other side of the room. She's snuggled up with her pillow pet and is watching Netflix on her lap top. I stretch real quick and stand up. "I'm going out." I say turning to her. "Are you sure? Its late." She says with her eyes still stuck on the screen.
"I just want to go and walk around campus. Maybe stop by at the 24 hour buffet. Wanna come?" I ask as I grab my phone and purse. She mindlessly shakes her head as she continues to stare at the screen. "Call me if anything..." Her voice trails as she stares at the lap top. I chuckle and leave the room.
Its quiet. Students are either out, sleeping, or at the library studying. Its finals week. Or what we students like to call "hell week". I walk out of the duplex and take in the fresh air. Its dark. And the stars light up the sky. I walk for a little bit. Until I make it to the buffet. And to my surprise its full. "At this time?" I open the glass door and the sound of loud talking pierces my ear. I walk in.
"Hello. Welcome. Student card?" The girl at the front desk asks with a tired smile. "Hi." I grin at her and hand over my student card. She swipes it and hands it back to me. "Tonight our main course is spaghetti and meat balls." She tells me. "Ooo! Thank you." I say walking in. I make my way over to the windows that had food.
There were all different kinds. Mexican. Italian. Hawaiian. Philippines. Korean. Chinese. Indian. And of course American.
I descide to try the spaghetti and meat balls. I grab a plate and help myself. I turn and I don't see any tables free. "Shit. I should have looked for a table before just walking in." I mentally scold myself. I look around. I don't find any free tables but I do find a table with one person.
I'm not going to lie. I like being a friendly person. Making new friends. Even though I don't have many.
There's a young man there. Around my age. Maybe a year older. His light brown hair draped over his eyes as he looks down at his plate. Looks like Korean food. I gulp. My throat had gone dry. I set my plate down on the table. "Hi" I finally say. He looks up at me. He says nothing. His eyes look scared. "Uhm.. Is it okay if I sit here with you? All the tables are taken." He looks at the bench in front of him then back at me. "Sure." Is all he says.
I smile and sit down. "Thank you so much. I thought I'd never find a seat." He grins at me then looks back down at his plate. I dig into my spaghetti. For a while the atmosphere is awkward between us, only the sound of our utensils clashing with our plates while we ate filled our small booth. I felt this weird urge to talk to him.
I look up at him. "So. What's your name?" I ask him. He looks up with food in his mouth. He looked like a pug. I chuckle. He chews quickly. "Kim Taehyung" he says. "So your name is Kim?" He chuckles his eyes closing slightly and he shows me his teeth. He shakes his head. "No. My name is Taehyung. In Korea, where I come from. You say your last name first." I blush feeling embarrassed. "Oh. I'm so sorry." I for some reason apologize while I stab my fork into my plate.
"Oh no. Its okay." He smiles. "And you?" He asks making me look up to him once again. "Valerie Sanchez." I reach out my hand and he takes it. We shake hands then continue eating. "So in Korea my name would be Sanchez Valerie?" I ask. He nods "sancheseu balleli" he says. I stare at him in amazement. "That's so cool!" I say almost spitting out my food. He chuckles.
For a while its quiet then I look up at him again. "So what are you studying?" I ask him. He purses his lips then looks at me
" I actually don't know. I'm taking American studies so that my English can get better." I furrow my eyebrows at him. "Your English sounds fine." I say smiling. He looks back down at his plate. "I've been here for three years. So I guess you can say I've gotten better since the first time I arrived." He says. "Do you miss Korea?" I ask.
He looks up right away. His face looked hurt. He just simply nods. "I still feel homesick every once in a while. So I come and eat the Korean food they serve here... But its nothing compared to the food actually from Korea." He bites his bottom lip. "You? Where you from?" He asks. I laugh. "Here. Lived in Cali all my life and I don't know any Korean and I guess you can say my English is amazing." he laughs.
"And what are you studying?" He asks becoming engaged in the conversation, becoming less shy. "I'm studying to become a plastic surgeon." I say with no feeling and my smile going away. His eye brows rise. "Oh? That sounds pretty cool." He says. I bite my bottom lip and let out a sigh. "Yeah." I look back down at my plate that just had sauce on it. "What's wrong? Do you not like what you're studying?" I look up at him with a sheepish smile.
"Is it that noticeable?" I ask brushing my hair behind my ear.
Wtf? Are you flirting? Stop!
I force my hand down. "Yeah a bit." He chuckles. Just then a girl walks up to our table and takes our plates. For the next hour we just sit there talking to each other that we don't notice that less and less people are in the buffet. "Sorry guys we're locking up." The girl that was at the front desk says.
So much for 24 hour buffet.
We head out of the buffet. "It was such a pleasure to meet you T-Tae-hyung." I say stuttering on his name scared to mispronouce it. He chuckles. "You can call me something else if you want." He says. I nod my head. "How about Tae?" I ask shyly. He smiles. "Yeah. Sure. As long as I get to call you Val." He says. I chuckle. "Sure."
The only light that helped me see were the small poles on the side of the sidewalk. I look at him. The dim light making his hair look dark, making his face look more attractive than it already is.
"So where's your dorm?" I ask. "Um.. Actually I don't know.." He confessed. I can't help but laugh. "You don't know?" He runs his fingers through his hair as he looks around at the dorm buildings. "Um. Yeah cause I had to change my dorm." My eyebrows go up. "Oh? Why? If you don't mind me asking. " he uses his tongue to give his lips moisture.
"My room mate kept bringing in girls and doing things. And he'd wear my clothes. So I just... Didn't want to deal with that." He says. "Oo.." Is all I said. For a while we just stood there. "Um.. Do you want me to walk you? To your dorm?" He asks. And it makes my heart flutter to think he'd care enough to ask. I look down at my shoes and shake my head. "Its fine." I say.
I'm so stubborn and I always try to be on my own. Ugh.
"Are you sure?" He asks taking a step closer to me. I look up at him. I didn't notice how tall he is. "I'm sure." I say. "It was nice meeting you Tae. Thanks so much for letting me sit at your table." I say sticking out my hand. He gladly takes it. "No problem. It was nice meeting you too Val." I then turn towards my dorms. Every once in a while I'd turn and glance at him. I never noticed how creepy the campus was a night.
Just then I hear steps near me and I thought it was Tae so I turn with a smile to see a guy I've never seen before. He has a can in his hand and looks filthy drunk.
He swings his arms over my shoulder. "Hey.." He burps "baby. How you.. Doing?" He asks lowering his hand and grabbed my butt. I fling away from him. "Hey! Don't touch me like that, I don't even know you!" He just smiles and walks towards me. I step back and my back hits one of the dorm buildings.
Fuck! Why didn't I just run when I had the chance? You're so stupid. In a scary movie you'd die first.
His hands on each side of me. I lift my chin as he tries to kiss my lips. So instead he kisses my neck. I try to push him away but he's too strong. "I promise it won't hurt." He says using one hand to unbuckle the front of his jeans. "Well.. Maybe just a little if you're still a virgin." I shut my eyes tightly letting the tears of fear roll down my face.
