The day had passed fastly, but I couldn't help but think about the events on the rooftop. I replayed the scene in my head, every little words we said...
I hated the situation, it was too hard being mad at Hoshi. I shouldn't even have been for such a stupid thing. I didn't want to make it last any longer. It was already the next day, and I was going to talk with him.
When 10:10 came, I was on he rooftop. I felt like the reason for me skipping class was enough important to do it.
Hoshi appeared on time, like usual. He stood in front of me, and silently greeted me. We stayed silent during a moment as I was trying to figure out a way to say what I had in mind.
"I'm sorry about yesterday. I over reacted. I hope you're not angry at me," I said as I looked straight in his eyes. His dark eyes were staring back at me as if trying to know if I was sincere. I couldn't be any less sincere.
His lips curled into a smile.
"I'm not mad. I'm also sorry for embarrassing you," he replied. I shook my head and denied that he was at fault. His smile was contagious...
Suddenly an excited fluff ball, Hoshi hugged me happily.
"Hehehheh, you're so nice! Also, tell me you're not only going to class." He pouted cutely. I guess he finds school as boring as me.
[Lunch Time]
After passing the rest of the morning on the rooftop, simply conversing and laughing, we headed to the cafeteria to get some food. Today was actually the first day Hoshi was eating at my school. I had seen him eat at my house before, but I wondered if he actually needed nutrition. They were genies after all, maybe it was different for them.
"Do genies eat?" I questioned him.
"Obviously," he rolled his eyes... if he even can.
"Yah don't laugh at me, I was just making sure!" He laughed.
I met Hyemi and Wonwoo in the cafeteria and sat at their table after getting my food.
We started eating and talking like usual. After a while, I layed down my chopsticks to drink a bit of water. Wonwoo and Hyemi stopped moving for some reason, and I felt like they were staring next to me. I looked at them, confused by their actions.
"What?" I asked. Wonwoo silently raised his hand, pointing next to me.
Hoshi was the one they were pointing at. He was eating my food, and that without permission. I kept my cool to not yell at him. You don't just eat my food and get away with it. I didn't get why they were staring at him though, he was invisible to them.
"Yeah?" I questioned, still not understanding.
"The chopsticks..." Hyemi stated.
Oh. They could only see the chopsticks. From their point of view the chopsticks must be hanging out in mid air on their own.
"wHat-" they started, but I cut them before they could say anything more. I took the chopsticks from Hoshi's hand and put them down on the table. I quickly glanced around. No one else seemed to have noticed, good.
"Shhh I'll explain everything," I said. We finish our food quickly and went somewhere more quiet. We ended up going outside. Making sure there was no one that could hear us, we started our discussion.
"What was that?!" Hyemi asked, obviously shocked by the ghostly event.
"Well, umm, I know you probably won't believe me, but there was actually someone eating that food... this is a bit complicated, but basically, I have a genie."
"A what?"
"A genie. Someone who does wishes. He is invisible to everyone except me. No I'm not crazy."
"How...?"
I looked at Hoshi and asked him if I could talk a bit about his world. He said okay, as they too would end up forgetting about him anyway.
"Well, genies are each assigned to a time of the day. When they are free, the first person, who has never had a genie and has the right age, to say their time out loud gets the genie for a year. I basically can ask a wish a day from him..."
"What the hell...?" Wonwoo whispered.
"Are you sure it's not an imaginary friend?" Hyemi asked.
"Well, huh, you saw the chopsticks right?"
"Let's say it's true, is he here right now?" Wonwoo asked.
"Yes, he's right there." I pointed next to me.
"Huh ok? I don't know if I should believe it or not... this is pretty crazy," Hyemi said. They looked at each other before turning back to me.
"Are you sure you're not just a magician...?" Wonwoo said.
"Dude, since when can I even do a magic trick?"
"Could we see him?
I looked at Hoshi as if asking his permission.
"If that's you're wish, but the less people that know the better," he stated.
"Only those two. They won't say anything I promise,"
"You can't ever say a thing about this, to anyone." They nodded.
"I wish for you to be visible for us 3 during 10 minutes," I said. He nodded at me. Seeing my two friends' reactions, he had granted the wish.
"So this is my genie, his name is Hoshi," I introduced him.
"Nice to meet you...?" they both said.
"Nice to meet you," Hoshi replied and bowed at them politely. The atmosphere was slightly awkward during a minute as none of us spoke.
"I can't believe this omg," Hyemi poked his cheek to verify it was indeed a real person who had just appeared right before her.
"Umm, okay, I guess you can go now Hoshi..." He said goodbye before disappearing to his own world.
"Don't freak out," I said before any of them could say anything, but it was of no use...
"OMG WHAT THE HELL? A GENIE?"
"HOW IS THIS EVEN POSSIBLE WE GOTTA REPORT THIS."
"No, you promised you wouldn't say it to anyone! This is our secret okay? Pinkie promise." I did a pinkie promise with both of them and they started to calm down. I answered of them questions regarding him, at the same time not revealing too much.
[a week later]
After the discovery of Hoshi, things slowly went back to normal. Wonwoo and Hyemi seemed even closer than before. We had been a trio of friends for a while now, but it still hurt me because I felt on the side. Especially since I knew Wonwoo liked her. Everything seemed obvious between them now, it couldn't hurt any more than it already was. Luckily, Hoshi was always there to make me smile. He was always making my sadness disappear with his contagious smile and energetic personality. He had become the sunshine of my days...
A ding from my phone informed me of a new text message.
Hyemi: Hey, I got to talk to you about something.
Me: yup?
Hyemi: Just now Wonwoo and I were at the park. He asked me to meet him there.
Me: Okay, continue.
Hyemi: Well... He confessed to me.
Me: ...
Hyemi: Don't worry I said no!
Me: You don't like him?
Hyemi: ...
Me: You do don't you?
Hyemi: Yes... I'm sorry.
Me: then why did you refuse?
Hyemi: you like him! I couldn't just...
Me: what!? I gtg
Yes I like Wonwoo, but I didn't want to ruin anything between them because of that. I was already rejected, in a way. It didn't matter anymore. Wonwoo was probably sad at the moment. I put my shoes on and ran my way to the park hoping I could catch him on time.
As the park came in view, I saw Wonwoo sitting down on a bench, he was looking at the ground.
"Wonwoo!" He looked up as he heard me call his name.
"You..." I caught my breath. "You have to go see Hyemi. She likes you as well. Don't let down the chance."
"What? Why did she reject me then?"
"Because of me."
"What?" He stared, evidently confused.
Ah, this is not about me... I have to tell him though, I can't ruin their love. I took a deep breath.
"I've always had a crush on you and she knew about it. She was just scared she would hurt me by accepting. But I want you two to be happy... go find her, now!" I pushed him towards the sidewalk.
He was still shocked by my confession. But, understanding, he smiled.
"Thank you and sorry," he said and ran off.
I sighed and picked up my phone from my pocket.
Me: don't say no this time.
I texted Hyemi. I slowly walked back home. I felt happy for them yet sad for myself, I sighed once again.
