Dub turned out to be a really interesting person. He plays basketball really well, although he isn't on their school's basketball team, reasons best known to him.
"You swim?" He asked me, out of the blue.
We were at Razor Blade. A hangout where people get to eat and drink, as well as play games and shop for a few things. Razor Blade, was just like a mini-mart or something of the sort. It had a mini-arcade and also had and eatery and clothing stores and a grocery shop too. I didn't know what to call this kind of store, perhaps a multipurpose store?
"No. I'm afraid of swimming pools" I replied, munching on my meat pie.
I saw a small grin slip across his lips and he instantly placed his arm over my shoulder.
"Well, I can teach ya" he said, and I fought the urge to snort.
Why don't you teach your pervy side to die down sometimes?
Dang it! I couldn't resist the urge.
"No, thanks" I replied instead.
"Why not?" He pressed on, an amused smile on her face. "You think I have any other ulterior motives?" He asked and I fought the urge to roll my eyes.
No, you're basically doing it for charity!
The sarcasm! It stung even me.
"Guilty conscience, huh? What gave it away? My reply or..."
"I just knew" he chuckled.
"Arse clown!" I borrowed Kambili's words and he laughed.
"Now you'll use Bili's words on me, huh?" He said, and I shrugged and finished the rest of my meat pie.
"Nope. I only said that cause, well, you kinda are" I said and he feigned hurt.
"That... That alone was an insult" he said, placing a hand to his chest in mock hurt. "Who knew you could talk like this?" Rhetorical question, I knew it was - yet I chose to reply.
"I never said I couldn't. You judged too quickly" I snorted.
"I like your personality though. You're one tough cookie" he said and I grinned.
"Glad you like me..." I gave him a knowing look.
"Don't you dare say it!" he replied, fighting the urge to grin at me.
"... Arse clown. Oops! I just did!" I laughed and he chuckled.
"Wow! Alisa, I never knew you could talk like this" Kambili suddenly said and I shrugged. I felt comfortable with them, and I was doing something I didn't usually do - letting my guard down.
"I'm nothing like a quiet girl. I talk, and I do when I feel... Comfortable" I replied, and she smiled.
"I knew she wasn't a quiet girl. She looks like a badass chic. Dub wasted no time in hook—"
"Can't you at least try to have sense? For once, Christian, be wise!" Kambili shunned and he smirked at her.
"Make me" he inched closer, and she pinched his nose.
"Aw! Such an aggressive girl!" He whined and she crossed her arms and smiled all innocently.
"Really? I didn't know you were such a crybaby. Say something dumb again, and your groin is next" we all gasped at her brute comment, and it soon dissolved into laughter.
Christian placed a hand over his groin and gasped.
"You demon child!" He gasped again.
"Mhm" she smiled and returned her attention to her meat pie.
Meanwhile, Queen was busy on her phone. I presumed she was chatting with someone... Probably a guy. Cause each time she got a new text, she'd either chuckle, smile or basically grin.
"Queen, you still talking to Nazir?" Dub asked and she smiled and grinned.
"He asked me out on a date just now. What should I say?" She replied, a large smile on her face.
Uh... Perhaps a ‘Yes’. That's what you want to say after all.
"Say ‘No’. Crush his heart and block him" Christian hissed and her face paled. "Of course you want to say ‘Yes’. Then do it!" He said and she smiled once more.
"You're right!" She beamed as she typed back her reply.
"And you're dumb" he murmured, but I heard since I was sitting a few chairs away from him.
I glanced at him, and he glanced at me, then winked. Rolling my eyes, I looked away.
"So, about that swimming thing. I'm serious though. You up for it?" Dub asked and I shrugged.
"I'll think about it. Not sure yet" that was a lie. I was sure what my answer would be, and that was a big, fat, maxi-sized ‘No’.
Him? Teach me how to swim? I'd be asking for trouble. What if he does something stupid?
"Cool" he relaxed on his chair, his hand still over my shoulder.
I glanced at his arm, which was still over my shoulder, and shrugged it off. I wasn't feeling comfortable with his arm being there.
"What? My strong biceps are too heavy for ya?" An amused grin played on his lips.
"No. Your saggy muscles are hurting my scrawny shoulders" I retorted.
"Which means they're heavy" a smug smile appeared on his face.
"Yes and no. Mostly, no. It only means they're saggy and overweight... And could use some workout" I snorted.
"Sassy much?"
"Cocky much?" I retorted and he grinned. He had nothing else to say. Good.
There was a brief silence before he spoke up again.
"Say..." He rubbed the back of his neck. "Can I get your number? That way we'd keep in touch with each other" he said and I shook my head, no.
"Sorry, but I don't have a phone" I replied and his eyes widened in shock.
"You don't have a phone?" The surprise was still there, it was tangled in his words too.
"Yup!" I replied and his surprised look slowly morphed into a smile.
"We need to fix that though" he muttered, more to himself than to me.
"We better get going. My so-called 'mom' wants me home" Kambili announced. She said the last part with so much disdain laced in her words. I felt bad, but I kept quiet.
"Yeah. Let's go" Dub said, and immediately got up from his chair. I did same too, and so did the others.
We soon headed for the exit and we're soon on our way home.
* * *
I bumped into Kamsi on my way to my room. We returned from Razor Blade a few minutes ago, and I was just heading to my room when I bumped into the ice-faced Kamsi. I hadn't noticed I spent so much time staring at him, not until he gritted his teeth and spoke to me.
"Move" he demanded, his voice: low and yet deep. His voice held depression in them, and his eyes held pain and bitterness in their chocolaty orbs. I couldn't figure this boy out. He was like a puzzle without a completion.
"No," came my determined voice. I was determined to fish something out of him, even if it meant getting him upset in the process. Seeing him like this, burdened my soul. It sent a sharp pain to my heart. And I felt now would be the right time to finally do something.
With a grunt, he tried walking past me, but I hurriedly came in his way.
"Move" he demanded again, and I clenched my fists, with a determined look.
"And I said, I won't" I knew I was playing with fire, yet I continued - regardless. He could hit me, but I chose to shove that thought aside.
He gritted his teeth and shoved me aside, aggressively. My shoulder collided with the wall, and I winced in pain. I watched as he walked away, and I gritted my teeth in determination and ran after him. I wasn't going to let him go that easily. He was about walking into his room, when I came in his way again and stood right in his face.
"You've been nothing but mean to me ever since I got here, and I'd like to know why. What's your problem? What's your problem with everyone? What's your problem with me?" Okay, that wasn't how I pictured my reply, but that works too... That's if I don't get slapped.
I was so close to his face, staring daggers into his eyes, and a challenging look on my face. He stared back - his deep pools of cocoa dug a hole into my soul - his eyes holding rage and bitterness. His woody brown eyes swirled with the storm I'd already created, with his hot breath fanning my face as I watched him seethe in rage.
He said nothing to me, yet he continued to have a stare-down with me.
"I just want to know what your problem is, Kamsi. The other day, you spoke to me so rudely - after I tried helping you. And today, you ignored me during breakfast... Why? I know it's not in my place to ask, but just tell me" Was I actually expecting this ice-faced guy to open up to me? Well, no. I definitely wasn't, but I had my hopes up.
"I didn't ask for your help" he gritted. His answer was blunt, and they lacked interest.
"Sometimes, you don't need to ask for help before help it's rendered to you. When someone's is offering to help you, learn to accept it. No man is an island, Kamsi. You need help, and there's nothing wrong with accepting help!" I raised my voice.
A bit too much...? Overly dramatic? I hope he doesn't slap me. Don't slap me, please don't slap me. Or punch me, just don't try it.
"Learn to mind your —"
"My business? That was what you wanted to say, right?" I cut him off sharply, with a sarcastic scoff in the end. "I can't do that, Kamsi. I've never been trained to see someone in pain and not help. I've been through worse situations, believe me - I have. I've had to go through a lot in life, I've seen hardship and have tasted it, I've felt it too. And I know how harsh, brutal, painful and depressing it can be. I know what rejection, hurt, emptiness and pain feels like, Kamsi. So please, don't tell me to mind my business. Cause it is my business. I'm trying to help you, Kamsi. Let me —"
"Shut up! Just shut the f**k up! I didn't ask for your dumb help! I don't want it, so just leave me alone..." He yelled, cutting me off. I stumbled back, in fear, and tripped on my own feet - falling hard on my butt, with a loud thud. Fear and shock, clawed at my senses and I succumbed to their treacherous torture.
I watched as his breathing became faster and ragged, and his hands clenched into super tight fists - as he breathed in and out ferociously.
"Please... Just leave me alone, please" he begged, his eyes turning glassy and holding even greater hurt in them. His voice weighed hurt and emptiness, a tired plea that tickled the feeling of pity and curiosity I'd earlier had - filled me. And with that being said, he walked away.
I blinked back my anger, and tried so hard not to grit my teeth - but I ended up doing it anyway.
"That... That... That insensitive... Argh!" I muttered in frustration, finally getting up from the floor, and mentally slapping myself - repeatedly - for even approaching him like that.
What was I even thinking? God! I lack brains sometimes!
"You okay? I heard screaming... Kamsi's screaming" I heard Kambili's voice say behind me. I dusted off the rest of the bits of dust on my shorts and turned to look her in the eye.
"I'm fine. Like I said earlier, I'm used to falling on my butt. This isn't the first... And I'm sure it won't be my last" I meant to mutter the last part.
"What did...? What did you say to him?" She asked, running a hand on her arm. She seemed restless.
What's up with her?
"It's just... I just... I bumped into him" I replied.
"He yelled at you to shut up. Which meant you pushed him to the wall. Kamsi never cusses... He only does when he's extremely pissed. So... So what did you say to my brother? What got him so tensed up?" She asked, a worried expression on her face. I couldn't decide if she was mad at me, or basically concerned. Or rather curious? I didn't know.
"I was just... I didn't mean to make him mad" I lied again.
Yes I did. I was literally toying with his patience. Goddammit!
"Don't lie to me, please. What did you say to him? I've never heard him yell like that in a long time. I'm worried about him. Alisa, please tell me" she sounded concerned. And with the look in her eyes, I could finally tell what was up with her.
She was only dying to talk to her brother. She was curious to know what got him talking. The pain in her eyes... They bore a hole in my heart. This family was so distant from each other. They were growing apart each day. That stung. It left a deadly sting in my heart, and I only hoped they'd be able to forget the past. I hoped I'd be able to help them out. To fulfill my promise to Mrs. Ekwegh.
"I... I asked him why he was so distant from everyone. I was curious, so I asked. I shouldn't have, and I'm terribly sorry" I replied, tearing my eyes away from hers and staring at the floor.
Although, I wasn't sorry. I wanted to find out more. I was curious to dig out more emotions from him, I wanted to make him explode with overwhelming emotions - rage, even make him cry, if that would help - and finally spill what's eating him up.
Please don't be mad at me. Please don't hate me. Please don't hate me. Please...
"Wow..." Her voice came out as a thin whisper. "During the past few years, I've been trying to get that boy to talk to me. I want us to be like we were before... Before..." I watched as her eyes turned glassy and my heart squeezed in pity.
Kambili was all cheery and happy, I didn't want to see her cry. I placed a hand on her shoulder and offered an encouraging smile.
"Hey... Don't cry or I'll pack my things and leave" I said, my voice calm.
Pack which things? And leave to where? Holy Jesus! What am I saying? I hope she doesn't say I should go ahead.
"Please don't!" And she immediately engulfed me in a hug and sobbed.
Hallelujah! I'm not leaving, you don't even have to worry about that part...
That's, untill you guys throw me out of your home.
"Everything hurts, Alisa. Kamsi's pain, mine... I can't take it! I want him to come back to the Kamsi he used to be! The goofy, vibe-filled Kamsi I used to know. I want things to be like... Like they were before... Before that witch came into the picture" she sobbed again, still hugging me.
"Kamsi was happy. We were all happy... Not until she came. She just had to come in and ruin it for us. I hate her, Alisa. I hate her with all I've got" she cried and I felt the drops of her salty tears on my shoulder.
I ran soothing circles on her back, to calm her down.
"It stings. Each time I think about it, it stings. And Kamsi... Kamsi is hurting the most. He's depressed... And he doesn't even want to see a doctor. My twin is acting like a lost soul... Like a ghost. So distant..." She sobbed. "... So empty. It stings, so so much" she cried out and I squeezed my eyes in pity.
No matter what it takes, I knew I had to get Kamsi out of that shell of his. He did react to me pissing him off... And that meant I'd have to continue doing just that.
"Don't worry. I know what to do to help him" I suddenly said and she sniffled and let go of me, wiping her tears away. Her eyes and nose: reddened, and face: slightly blotchy.
"How?" She asked, trying so hard to stop the tears.
"I'll explain, but you'll have to help me. Got it?" I said, with a small smile.
"Sure. I don't have a choice anyways" she replied, and mustered a small smile.
