13.3 ; ALL OF THE STARS.

AFTER THE DISCOVERY OF Lila's life in the photographic collage, Morgan, Elle, and Gideon all left to question Spencer's high school friend. It had been a little over a half-hour since they left. They were supposed to call once they had any leads, but so far they hadn't heard a word.

Caroline sat quietly beside Lila on the couch while Spencer paced across the living room, murmuring to himself. The young actress's eyes followed him warily.

"Does—does he always do this?" Lila's soft voice asked.

Caroline glanced up at her, resting her elbows on her knees as she furrowed her brow at her. "I'm sorry?"

She nodded her head towards the twitchy young doctor. Caroline managed to be able to look at him for a second before her chest seized up again.

"Yeah, he—uh, talks to himself when he gets nervous," she murmured as she stared at her hands. "Helps him think through things."

Lila stared at her thoughtfully for a moment before nodding and returning back to watching Spencer pace. Caroline took a shaky breath, trying to recollect herself.

She knew she had no right to be upset but she couldn't stop herself. When she found Spencer in the pool kissing Lila, her heart felt like it had been ripped in half. The pain that blossomed in her chest felt like that .22 caliber bullet that had torn through the previous victims. It was wild, uncontrolled, and it had bounced around in chest like a pinball. She never thought she could feel such heartache.

But she wasn't mad. How could she be? Lila had expressed her interest in her best friend early on and it was obvious that Spencer felt something for her too. He deserved to be happy and she wasn't going to stand in the way of that. She just had never thought how painful it would be if Spencer finally did find someone he could be happy with. Someone he could love.

God, it was so painful to even look at him now, much less speak to him. Every time she sees those brown eyes, her heart stops and she forgets how to breathe. All she can see now when she looks at Spencer is how he held Lila and kissed her so gently, so caringly just like he had with Caroline a year ago.

But things were different now. A year ago, Caroline was able to stuff down all those ugly feelings of fear, loathing, and self-doubt. She was also able to forget about her feelings for her best friend as well. Now, things aren't so simple.

Spencer Reid had come in when she had least expected it and had somehow managed to heal a part of her she never thought would recover. He made her feel again.

Now, because of that, she was damned to feel her heart break every time she looked at him.

The sound of Spencer's phone ringing pulled her out of her thoughts. Both her and Lila's heads snapped up, eyes zeroing on the phone already at his ear.

"Gideon," Spencer said into the phone. He paused as he listened. After a minute, Caroline watched as his face slowly dropped.

"Alright, I got it," he murmured. "See you soon."

He hung up the phone and shoved it into his pocket before he turned to the actress. "Lila, do you know someone named Maggie Lowe?"

She gave him a startled look. "Mags? Yeah, of course, I know her. I've known her for years. I even got her a job on my show."

Caroline could tell by the look on Spencer's face that Lila's answer was not what he wanted to hear. On the coffee table, the actress's phone started to ring. She reached for it and checked the caller ID. She froze.

"What?" Caroline asked, shifting towards her on the couch.

"That's her calling right now," Lila said as she showed the phone to the two profilers.

"Is she calling from a cellphone?" Spencer questioned.

The actress nodded. The young doctor paled.

"Lila, we think Maggie's the unsub."

Caroline went still. So that's what Gideon had told him over the phone and why he had been so displeased with the actress's answer.

Her brows furrowed. "The what?"

"The stalker," Caroline said as she stood up from the couch. She was already fishing her phone from her pocket.

The actress's face dropped. "No way."

"Answer the phone," she told her as she checked outside the windows for any sign for somebody outside. It was too dark outside to make out anything past the blue light reflecting off the pool.

"That's—that's crazy."

"Answer the phone," Caroline repeated slowly. "Act completely natural. The longer you keep her on the line, the more likely we'll be able to trace the call."

Lila's phone continued to ring as she stared blankly at her. Spencer nodded at her encouragingly. The actress took a deep breath before hitting the answer button. Caroline stepped away as she hit Garcia's number on her phone. The line picked up after the first ring.

"Oracle of Quantico," the tech analyst's voice chirped over the phone. "Speak if you deign to hear the truth."

"Garcia, I need an emergency trace on a cell phone call to Lila Archer's cell phone," she explained.

"Sure, Care-bear, go ahead."

"3-2-3, 5-5-5, 0-1-2-9."

"Okay, keep her talking."

Caroline turned to Lila, still on the phone with Maggie. Her face was pale and her eyes were wide with fear as she listened over the phone. She made eye contact with the actress and motioned her to continue. She shuddered in response.

She turned back around as Spencer came up beside her with a questioning look on his face. She held up a hand to let him know to give her a minute.

"Got anything, P.G?"

"No, not—wait, yeah I do!" There was the sound of keys clacking and then a beat of silence. "Caroline, is Lila's address 6028 Pike Street?"

She sucked in a breath. "Yeah."

"She's calling from inside the house. I'll send you guys some backup."

She turned to Spencer slowly as she hung up the phone. He could tell by the look on her face that something was up.

"What is it?"

"She's in the house," she whispered to him as she pocketed her phone. Her hand rested on the handle of her gun as she heard the sound of glass shattering from upstairs.

Lila's eyes flashed to the two profilers on the other side of the room. Caroline had already pulled her gun out of its holster and held it both hands by her side.

"How'd she get in the house?" Spencer asked her.

Lila slowly pulled the phone away from her ear. She whispered, "She has keys."

Caroline took a deep breath. She had to think of something before Maggie came down guns blazing, and she couldn't have Lila in the line of fire. If Maggie knows the FBI is here, then she knows that Lila sold her out. She would feel betrayed and trapped.

And if she felt trapped, the actress could be caught in the line of fire.

"Look at me," Caroline whispered to the actress as she stared upstairs, her bottom lip trembling. She could hear Spencer unholstering his gun.

Lila's eyes flashed down to hers, wild and frightened.

"I will not let her hurt you," she assured her softly. "We're going to go upstairs and get her. I need you to stay here."

"No," the actress blurted out.

"Lila, we don't have time to argue about—"

"Please," the actress pleaded. "I—I don't want to be alone."

Caroline stopped for a second and saw the panicked expression on her face. Her pupils were blown wide from the adrenaline and her hands were shaking in front of her. She remembered being that scared once. She had wished someone had been with her too.

She took a deep breath. "Fine. But you need to stay behind me, okay?"

Lila nodded vigorously before she grabbed onto the back of her shirt. Caroline looked to Spencer, who nodded at her. It was time to head up.

They kept close together as they ascended the stairs quietly, their guns trained out in front of them. Every so often, as the agents swept each room upstairs, Lila's grip on her shirt would tighten. She reached behind her every time to squeeze her hand to let her know it would be alright.

As they approached Lila's room, Caroline heard a thump from behind the door. She and Spencer exchanged a look. She nodded at him before he reached for the doorknob. He gently turned it and pushed the door open. She glanced around the room—no sign of Maggie. In the corner was the closet door, wide open with the light turned on.

She motioned to Spencer it was clear before nodding to the open closet door. He immediately understood as he walked through the door with Caroline at his heels. Lila's grip became so tight on her shirt, she thought she might rip it.

It was quiet inside the house. From the open balcony window, Caroline could hear the chirping of crickets, could smell the night air. For a moment, it seemed peaceful.

"Why'd you have to bring these people here?"

Caroline whipped around when she felt the grip on her shirt loosen. With a steady hand, she aimed her gun at the small blonde girl standing behind Lila. Mascara was running down her cheeks in thick black smears and her hair was sticking up wildly as if she had been pulling out her hair. And in her hands was a gun that she had pressed against the back of Lila's head.

Lila made eye contact with her, pleading to her. Tears started to roll down her face. Behind her, Spencer sucked a breath.

"Put down the gun," Maggie instructed. She emphasized her point by pressing the barrel harder against Lila's head, causing her to flinch.

If she lowered her gun, Maggie could have free reign to shoot all of them. But, if she didn't lower her gun, she could shoot Lila. She couldn't let that happen.

So, she mimicked Spencer as she carefully placed her gun on the ground at her feet. She held her hands out in front of her, palms facing front, as a sign of surrender.

"Maggie," she heard Spencer say softly to the unsub, trying to reason with her.

"Don't call me Maggie," she snapped. "You don't know me."

The unsub slowly came to Lila's right, the actress flinching as she moved. "Come on, Lila, let's go," the unsub said as she slowly dragged the gun down the side of her face. The actress shook. "We really gotta go, baby."

"Maggie, do not hurt her," Caroline said gently. She had to get the unsub off her game in order to get her away from Lila. If Maggie just lowered the gun a little lower, she might be able to grab it and disarm her. "You do not need to hurt her."

Maggie's eyes flashed to hers, hot and angry. "You don't know anything. I would never do anything to hurt her." She carefully moved a stray strand of hair from Lila's face as the tears flowed steadily down the actress's face. "No, I couldn't hurt you. I created you."

Lila sucked in a breath before shaking her head. "No, you didn't."

No, Caroline wanted to scream at her. Play along with the fantasy.

Maggie retracted from her, her lips pulling back over her teeth. "Yes, I did. I know I did. God! You stupid, ungrateful..." She raised the gun higher on Lila's temple. "I can't believe that I loved you."

She felt Spencer shift beside her. "Maggie, she, uh, she loves me now."

The unsub turned to the young doctor, her face taut. She pointed the gun at him. "What?"

Despite herself, Caroline's heart lurched when she pointed the gun at him. It still wasn't safe enough to reach for her gun or to disarm Maggie. She had to wait until she could safely disarm without anyone in the crossfire.

"She told me so," he said slowly. "We were in the pool. She kissed me. Now she loves me, okay?"

Even though she knew it was a distraction, knew he was just trying to distract the unsub, the same pain that she's been nursing all night blossomed in her chest once again. She kissed him. He kissed her. Whatever way she wanted to put it, it still ended up with the same pain.

"No," Maggie muttered as she waved her gun at him. "I don't believe you."

Spencer looked at the actress, his hands out in front of him. "Tell her we kissed in the pool."

Lila went silent as she made eye contact with him. Maggie kept alternating pointing her gun at Lila and Spencer, Caroline going effectively unnoticed.

"No!" Maggie screamed. Lila swallowed under the heat of the gun.

"Yes, we kissed."

There was a split second of hurt that crossed Maggie's face. Then, like a snap of the fingers, that hurt morphed into anger. Red, hot anger.

The unsub roared as she lunged over to grab Lila's shoulder. Her back turned to Caroline.

That was her mistake.

The blonde agent lunged for the gun in her hand, tackling her with her body weight. She straightened the unsub's arm and pointed the gun to the ceiling as Maggie fired the gun, the loud shots cracking in her ears.

She yanked the gun out of her hand once she emptied the clip and shoved her down to the floor, using her foot to pin her in place. During the struggle, Spencer had scooped up his gun and had it pointed at the unsub in the floor.

"Please," she wailed as tears streaked down her face. "Please kill me. Shoot me, please! I'd be so much happier. Please."

Slowly, Spencer lowered his gun and Caroline gently took her foot off of Maggie's chest. Once freed, she began to sob. Carefully, the blonde agent set the gun on the bed behind her before sinking down to eye-level with the unsub.

"It's gonna be alright," she hushed softly to the crying girl, carefully smoothing back her hair. She continued to reassure the girl as Spencer handcuffed her and lifted her up, dragging her out of the room as she sobbed Lila's name.

Caroline watched as the pair disappeared into the hall, Maggie's cries becoming fainter. After she could no longer hear the cries, she glanced down at the actress sitting in the floor with her knees pressed against her chest, staring out the door where her friend was just dragged out of.

She slowly got on her knees in front of her. She waited for a moment, checking for signs of shock, before gently resting a hand on her knee. "Are you okay?"

The actress opened her mouth, but instead of words coming out, strangled cries did. Lila buried her face into Caroline's shoulder and wrapped her arms around the agent's body as she cried. And she let her.

Even when the police siren sounded outside and the flashing red and blue lights filter through the window, Caroline held her as she sobbed into her shoulder and didn't let go.

The next morning, the paparazzi surrounded the LAPD police station once news of Lila's stalker hit the media. Spencer stood on the sidewalk, observing as the rest of the team kept handled the flashing cameras in their faces. He watched as Caroline started to usher them away like sheep. She even started using cattle calls to get them to move, to which most of them actually responded to even though they had looks of disdain on their faces. She grinned wildly as she herded them away from the car.

Beside him, Lila chuckled. "She's something else, isn't she?"

Spencer smiled. "Yeah, she is."

The young doctor looked down at the blonde actress standing next to him. Now that the case was solved and Maggie was pending trial, it was time to board the jet and head home. However, before they left, Lila had come by the station to personally thank the team for everything they've done.

"You know, I'm going to miss you two," she told him. "I got used to having personal bodyguards."

Spencer laughed. "Oh, so that's what we were to you?"

Lila started to say something else before her new manager walked over and cut her off. The new manager Lila had hired was a woman with long red hair and a stern, unyielding face.

"Darling, E-Scape wants to do a segment on you this evening on the stalking event," she informed her, not even bothering to cast a glance at Spencer. "I told them yes."

The actress balked at her manager. "Why'd you do that?"

"It's okay," she assured her. "It's gonna be fine. The hair and makeup people are coming in 10 minutes. There's also talk about 60 Minutes."

Lila just stared at her manager for a second, dumbfounded, before protesting, "This kinda publicity makes me really uncomfortable."

"Don't be ridiculous. We're talking about performing a public service, all right? Stalking is a major problem in this country. It's good."

The manager's phone rang and she fished it out of her pocket. "I gotta take this. You're on in 15."

Lila and Spencer shared a look as her new manager stalked off, barking orders into her phone. He chuckled, "Looks like, uh, you're gonna be pretty busy."

"I wish things had been..." The actress sighed. "I wish things had been more normal when we had met."

"Lila, believe me when I say this. I've never known a normal day in my entire life."

"Hey, Reid," Morgan called to him from the car. "Come on. We gotta move."

He nodded. "Gotcha."

Lila nervously tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. "Well, uh...if I'm ever in Washington and I was to give you a call, would that be okay?"

Spencer blinked. "Uh, yeah. Yeah, I'd like that."

"I don't want to intrude."

"No, not at all."

He felt a tap on his shoulder. The young doctor turned and faced Gideon, who had slid on his sunglasses to block the L.A. sun. From a distance, Lila's manager started to call her name.

"Reid, we're waiting."

"Yeah, I'm coming." Spencer turned back to the actress with a sheepish expression. "Sorry."

She smiled sadly. "It's fine. They need you."

He couldn't think of anything else to say. He heard the manager urging Lila to head to hair and makeup and the clicking sound of the paparazzi's cameras. This was her life, and it would always be her life.

He leaned forward and rested his hand on her shoulder. She captured it by laying her cheek on top. Her skin was warm from the heat and he held it there for a moment. He hoped everything went well for the blonde actress and she found someone she could truly rely on.

He slowly retracted his hand and started heading back to the car where Caroline and Derek waited beside it. Derek motioned him to hurry up while Caroline just smiled. She was finally smiling at him again.

"Hey, Spencer?"

He stopped and turned to Lila. "Yeah?"

The actress gave him a small smile. "Don't let her go."

The young doctor drew his eyebrows together but didn't say a word. For once, he understood. For once, he knew exactly what to do.

"I won't."

With that, Spencer Reid left the blonde actress on the sidewalk as he returned to his team's side where he planned to stay for a very, very long time.

After a long plane ride across the nation, the BAU team finally landed in Quantico late in the night. Once they landed, the team dispersed. Some headed home to catch up on some sleep while others decided to do some paperwork. Spencer was in the latter group. He knew he wouldn't be able to sleep tonight anyway. Besides, there was something comforting to him about late nights at the office. It was quiet and dark and he could be alone with his thoughts.

But it didn't seem like he would get much peace tonight.

His eyes scanned the magazine Elle had flung on his desk before she left. On the cover was Lila with his hand on her shoulder. The title read: "A Mystery Man in Lila's Life?"

He shook his head and he flopped the magazine back on his desk. Across from him, Derek laughed from his desk.

"Night, Hollywood," he teased as he slid his leather jacket on to leave.

Spencer grimaced. "Come on, man."

"You know, Reid, you're lucky they didn't get a shot of you next to the pool trying to draw your gun," he joked. "You looked like a wet rat."

He ignored him, focusing on the stack of files in front of him.

"Hey." The young doctor glanced up and his friend gave him a conceding look. "I was playing."

They sat in silence for a moment. Without him saying anything, Derek migrated over to the young doctor's desk and leaned against the edge, waiting. It was like he knew Spencer wanted to talk and was waiting for him to say something.

He cleared his throat. "Did you know that, um, she—I kissed her in the pool?"

Derek only grinned at him. He felt his cheeks flush. That probably meant the whole team knew by now. He shuddered a little at the thought of Gideon and Hotch discussing his romantic encounter.

"It's so weird," Spencer continued, shaking his head in disbelief. "It doesn't even feel like it really happened, you know?"

He shrugged. "Sure, sure. She's a pretty young actress."

"Yeah, you know, I kept explaining to her bout transference and the fact that she probably only liked me because I was there to protect her."

"Reid. You were her hero."

"Yeah," Spencer scoffed. "I wanted to think that."

"No, no, no. Don't go selling yourself short, kid," his friend said. "You took down an armed subject without firing a shot. You save her life." He gave him a grin. "That's pretty much a hero in my book."

"Let me ask you this," Spencer remarked. "Have you ever crossed professional boundaries with a victim of a case you were working on?"

Derek sighed as he crossed his arms over his chest. "No."

Spencer felt the shame wash over him. "It's pretty bad, right?"

"Some things, you can't control," Derek said as he teased Spencer's hair, "even with that big ol' brain of yours. No harm, no foul."

As he stood up to leave, Spencer felt the real question he wanted to ask burning in the back of his throat. He knew if he didn't ask it now, he never would. He sucked in a deep breath.

"Hey, Morgan?"

The profiler stopped in his tracks and faced the young doctor, his face curious.

"Has...has there ever been a girl that you wanted to be with for more than just one night?"

"Excuse me?"

"I've never seen you with the same girl twice," Spencer explained.

Derek crossed his arms across his chest. "What, are you calling me a dog?"

"No! Not at all. I'm just—I want..." Spencer took a deep breath and tried again. "I'm just trying to figure out if this feeling I have is ever gonna go away."

Derek sighed as he leaned on the desk divider in front of him. "Reid, what we do for a living, it takes up all our time. And a relationship's hard enough, even if you're in the same city."

"So, I mean, you're saying it's probably wise that I don't call her, right?"

He shook his head. "I can't answer that one for you. That one is entirely up to you. The only thing I can tell you is to do what you want."

Spencer nodded as the words sunk into his head. Do what he wanted? It seemed simple, and yet, so difficult at the same time. What if what he wanted, what he really wanted, was not possible? He didn't know how he could handle that.

After the prolonged silence of Spencer's thinking, Derek chuckled and patted him on the back. "I'm out."

"Have a good weekend," the young doctor murmured absentmindedly.

Derek had gathered all his things and was halfway to the door before he stopped and glanced back at Spencer, sitting at his desk in deep thought.

"Oh, and Reid?"

He looked up at Derek, who was grinning at him from ear to ear.

"I know we weren't talking about Lila."

Heat washed over him as his cheeks flushed. The profiler laughed, a big, hearty laugh, before turning back around and headed out the door.

"Goodnight, Romeo," Derek Morgan called over his shoulder as he opened the glass door and left the building.

Spencer sat in his chair, lost in thought. Once he was sure Derek was gone, he stared at the magazine on his desk. Looking back, he knew that what happened with Lila wasn't really him. She was a nice girl, but something about it felt wrong. Deep down, he knew what to do.

He gave the magazine another once over before he slid it into the trash bin at the foot of his desk. He gathered his things and slipped on his jacket before heading out of the office. In his hand was his phone.

What did he want? Well, that was easy.

He hit his speed-dial and waited with the phone by his ear. The line picked up by the third ring.

"Hello?"

"Hey, it's me. Can we talk?"

➴ ➴ ➴ ➴ ➴ ➴

Caroline stuffed her hands deep into her coat pocket as she walked along the park path. It was a nice night to take a walk she realized as she looked around. It was cool outside with a slight breeze, but not too cold. The lampposts littered along the park weren't bright, but instead dim, reminding her of a warm fire. The sky was oddly clear to where she could see the bright stars dotted across the black sky. She paused and took a deep breath of the crisp night air, letting herself relax.

She tugged her hat further down on her head and turned on her flashlight as she wandered off the path.

When Spencer has called her an hour ago, she had been surprised. The rest of the team had left the office as soon as they possibly could to catch up on sleep. Except her. She had gone home and stayed awake plagued with nightmares that don't end when the sun rises.

So when he called her to meet him, she had jumped at the chance. Anything to get out of sitting alone in her pitch-black bedroom as her insomnia kicked in. She followed his directions carefully as she treaded through the trees to the north of the small park. After about five minutes of stepping over mossy logs and ducking under low-hanging tree branches, she finally came upon the small clearing.

"Spencer?" she whispered into the night, casting the small beam of light her flashlight provided around the clearing. There was no response. "Are you there?"

"I'm right here."

Caroline jumped back, dropping her flashlight. It landed with a hard thud in front of her feet.

"Jesus, Spence!" She gasped as she bent down to pick up her flashlight. "Can you give me more of a warning next time?"

The young doctor chuckled at her frazzled response. "Sorry. I'll do better next time."

She huffed. "Next time? You're lucky I didn't smack you."

"You wouldn't."

"Try me, Dr. Reid." Caroline raised her flashlight to cast a glow over him. He was smiling at her. "What?"

"You came," he said.

She shifted in her boots. "I told you I would."

"I know, I just..." Spencer sighed then shook his head as he wrung his hands together. "Never mind. It doesn't matter."

Caroline frowned a little. Now, she knew the young doctor had his quirks. The way he gestured with his hands while he talked and how he squinted his eyes when he was concentrating were normal. But the way he stood so rigidly in front of her, wringing his hands so tightly she saw his skin was stretched taut, made her think he was nervous.

"So, why did you want to meet in the middle of a park?" She asked him as she rubbed her hands over her arms. "It's warmer in my apartment."

"Yeah, it is. But the view isn't as nice as this one."

"The view?"

Spencer gently took her cold hand in his gloved one. He held it between his gloves as if he was trying to warm it before he spoke. "Look up."

She furrowed her brows at him as she glanced above. Her breath caught.

The trees in the clearing parted above her, leaving a circular opening on the sky. The black night bled through the branches as the stars above dazzled and danced. There were no wisps of grey clouds obscuring the moon as the pale light reflected down on them.

"Wow," Caroline whispered as she marveled at the sky above. "It's so beautiful."

Spencer's eyes never left her, gazing up at the stars. "Yeah. Yeah, it is."

With her eyes still on the stars, she smiled. It was a smile more luminous than the moon, so much so that it froze him in place. With the pale beams of moonlight shining in her blonde hair, she looked ethereal standing in the clearing. Heavenly. Beautiful.

"I wanted you to be able to look at the stars," he explained softly. "All of them. Just as I promised."

She tore her eyes away from the sky as a lump formed in her throat. Even though it wasn't fancy or extravagant, this meant everything to her. It was probably the most thoughtful and meaningful thing someone had ever done for her.

"Thank you," she whispered, not trusting her voice to keep steady.

He smiled at her and the world melted at her feet. "You're welcome."

Finally, the two of them both gazed up at the stars, marveling at the beautiful night. Ever since she was little, she had always loved the stars. At first, it was superficial reasons. She liked how they danced in the night and twinkled like they were winking at her. Then, as she got older and life happened, the stars, somehow, became her friend. Because even though they are surrounded by darkness, they still shone so brightly. They had listened to her hopes and dreams and fears. They listened and they remained.

"It is not in the stars to hold our destiny but in ourselves," Caroline whispered to herself in the chilly night.

Spencer looked over at her. "That's Shakespeare."

"Yeah, it is." She wrapped her arms around herself tightly. "I've always loved that quote."

She felt Spencer's hand brush against hers and, without really knowing why, she reached for it. At some point, he had taken off his gloves. His hands were a little clammy despite the chill but she only really noticed one thing.

He has soft hands.

Spencer smiled at her sheepishly but he didn't pull away. He would never pull away from her.

They stayed like that, holding hands, even when they eventually laid down in the grassy clearing. Even when Spencer began pointing out constellations in the stars and explaining their meanings, he didn't let go of her hand.

Eventually, when the night shifted into early morning and the stars disappeared, they were still holding hands.
