Something just beneath the surface was cooking itself, something inside Jed that Nathaniel couldn't get out of the werewolf since the nephilim asked half an hour ago. Nathaniel hadn't heard a peep about the situation, but even then, the nephilim knew it had to do with him bonding the new alpha.

"I know it bothers you," Nathaniel sighed.

And Jed just shrugged. "It's your life."

Nathaniel rolled his eyes. "It's not like I cheated, or like, intentionally cheated- anyway, dude, it's not like I'm going all buddy-buddy on the kid."

"You went buddy-buddy on me."

"That was different," Nathaniel huffed in return, pulling a chair and sitting before Jed's cell. "You can't seriously be mad at me, can you?"

Jed hummed, but even then, the werewolf cracked a small smile. "Maybe just a bit- has Doctor Saltzman thought about letting me out of here? It's getting pretty lonely."

Nathaniel made a face. "I've been trying to sweet-talk him. I don't think it's working," the nephilim paused for a second. "You went after Kirby to get at Rafael, didn't you?"

There was silence.

"I wolfed out," Jed responded after a second, the werewolf's face had no sign of regret. "I don't plan on doing it again. I came back for a reason. I can't go back there."

"Back where?"

Jed shuddered and Nathaniel knew something was completely wrong there.

Jed's face contorted into a smile. "Not that I'm complaining, but why are you down here with me? Isn't Miss Mystic Fall being hosted by Salvatore this year? You should be prepping."

Nathaniel instantly noted the sly change in the direction of the conversation but decided on not commenting on it.

"You know I don't do school activities," Nathaniel scoffed, a small smirk on his face. "It makes me look cooler and more mysterious."

Jed snorted. "Yeah, right. You don't do school activities because you're a lazy asshole."

There was a small chuckle there on both parts.

"That too."

Nathaniel looked over Jed.

"I missed you."

"I did too," Jed smiled back. Then a small hum abandoned the wolf. "So, you and Hope doing okay? You seem to have sad puppy dog written all over you."

Nathaniel rolled his eyes. "I do not."

"You're a dumbass," Jed rolled his eyes, a shake to his head. "What did you do?"

Nathaniel scoffed. "I did nothing. I was trying to be a good boyfriend. But trying to be a good nephilim boyfriend earned me nothing but getting beat by a high-key unattractive, dark under-eyed phoenix with an inferiority complex."

"Phoenix?"

Nathaniel snorted. "Landon Kirby is a damn phoenix- I mean, phoenixes aren't even that cool. Nephilim's are literally half-angels, who the fuck prefers a phoenix over a nephilim?"

"I'm guessing Hope Mikaelson."

Nathaniel paused. "Be thankful you're behind bars right now, Jed."

Jed snorted slightly. "Chill out, hot-shot. You can't be serious mop-head Kirby is making you this insecure."

"I'm not insecure," Nathaniel narrowed his eyes on Jed. "I'm just done playing second best to Wednesday when it comes to Hope. Seriously, I'm a damn nephilim, I can end the world if I want to. And what can Wednesday do? Die and come back in a pile of dust. So fucking cool."

The sarcasm made Jed chuckle. "Then show her what you're worth, stud."

Nathaniel snorted. "I ooze what I'm worth."

Jed rolled his eyes playfully. "If you're so sure of that you should be with Hope, being a good boyfriend, and not hiding out here with me. Which isn't hiding, by the way. Everyone with half a brain cell knows you're down here."

"Point taken," Nathaniel granted. "But she hasn't even talked to me since finding out Kirby was a fucking hummingbird."

Jed sighed. "You think she prefers him."

Nathaniel scoffed. "She'd be stupid to."

"Go find out for yourself then."

There was a slight pause after Jed's sentence as Nathaniel gave it some thought. Sure, the nephilim was upset with Hope. The tribrid had went against what she had said when she promised to stop worrying about Landon's wellbeing. But the more Nathaniel thought, the more the nephilim's pride wasn't about to let himself lose Hope to a phoenix with no wings.

"Maybe I will."

Jed snorted. "Maybe you should."

And with that, Nathaniel was out of his chair and walking up into the halls of Salvatore. The nephilim then commenced his search for Hope, which wouldn't be any harder than locating Landon sniffing a trail behind her. Which would be expected. What wasn't expected, was Nathaniel running into Roman Sienna before ever reaching the tribrid and the phoenix.

"Nate," Roman's eyebrows rose.

Nathaniel tight smiled. "Roman."

Without another word, Nathaniel's fist connected with Roman's nose and the vampire hunched forward, holding his face in his hands.

Roman huffed. "I deserved that."

"I could kill you," Nathaniel said between clenched teeth. "You know, it's pretty bold of you to show your face around here after what you did."

"Yeah, well," Roman shrugged, not letting his eyes fall from Nathaniel's. "Not your place to decide, angel boy. Doctor Saltzman called me in to help with preparations for Miss Mystic Falls."

Nathaniel snorted sarcastically. "Well, we've got enough hands. And ours aren't covered in Hayley Marshall's blood, so..."

Roman rolled his eyes. "That's the least of your worries. Still scared I'll tell Hope about your little crush?"

Nathaniel smirked.

And something clicked in Roman. "Unless she already knows."

Nathaniel chuckled. "You're a tad bit late to the party there, goldilocks."

"Hmm," Roman hummed, eyes trailing behind Nathaniel as a pensive look fell on the vampire's features. "And by the looks of it so are you."

Nathaniel slowly turned his head to find Hope walking alongside Landon, a small smile on her face as the tribrid and the phoenix had a conversation. Something in the nephilim stirred at that. And as Hope felt the lingering eyes, the tribrid's gaze fell on Nathaniel and Roman.

"Roman," Hope let out.

Roman half smiled. "Hope."

Nathaniel almost made everything in the hall come crashing to the ground. In three steps, Hope and Landon stood before Nathaniel and Roman. The confused gleam in Landon's eye did nothing to make Nathaniel's death glare calm itself. And as Hope took in Roman, the nephilim couldn't help but let it fall on her next.

"What are you doing here?"

"Doctor Saltzman asked me to help with the preparations," Roman answered.

There was a small silence as Roman glanced at Landon and Hope instinctively perked up.

"This is Landon," Hope introduced.

Landon quickly put out his hand. "I'm a phoenix, by the way- which is so cool."

Nathaniel huffed. "No one cares."

There was another silence as Landon rolled his eyes and put his outstretched hand back.

Roman took a second to break the silence to announce he would be going to look for Doctor Saltzman. In return, that left Nathaniel behind with Hope and Landon. Which instantly caused the tension to make itself feel a lot heavier than just a few seconds ago.

"Beat it, bird boy," Nathaniel snapped.

And Landon made a face. "I'm a phoenix, you can't treat me like this anymore."

Nathaniel smirked. "I treat everyone however I want here, Wednesday. And the only reason I never tried killing you was because I thought you were human. I know you aren't one now. So, walk. the. fuck. away."

With that said, and Landon's lack of abilities, the phoenix stalked away in a huff, leaving behind Nathaniel and Hope. And by the look on the tribrid's face, she wasn't exactly happy with Nathaniel's attitude towards Landon.

"You don't have to treat him like that, you know?"

Nathaniel snorted. "So, we're back to defending him, huh?"

Hope rolled her eyes. "We all thought he died."

"Yes, and it was a shame he didn't stay dead."

"Nate!"

The look on Hope's face did nothing to make Nathaniel drop the serious look on his.

"I gave you a pass because we all thought the kid died. Even if you went against what I asked of you and what you promised," Nathaniel explained, the nephilim's eyes searching Hope's. "But I'm not going to keep letting it slide."

Hope crossed her arms.

"I was ready to suck up everything you did to get to Landon when he was missing, but even now, you're still hanging around him," Nathaniel continued. "I think I'm done being your boyfriend and waiting for you to pick me."

Hope huffed. "What does that mean?"

Nathaniel narrowed his eyes. "It means, I'm not toxic enough to prohibit you from talking to him, but I'm not stupid enough to let you keep hurting me."

There was silence.

"Maybe I might actually be done, Hope."

And those words seem to knock Hope down a few pegs because the tribrid's rigid stance fell, as well as her crossed forearms. Nathaniel looked her over, watching as Hope tried finding something, anything to say to redeem the situation but the tribrid was at loss for words. Hope Mikaelson was actually losing Nathaniel Forbes over her carelessness.

Nathaniel simply sighed.

And that's when Lizzie Saltzman decided on making an appearance.

"I need you both," Lizzie stated.

With that, Nathaniel and Hope were whisked away by their forearms as Lizzie led the way towards the other end of the school, into a secluded room. There, Nathaniel noticed Josie and Penelope and all the nephilim could do was let his face turn colder.

It was the first time Nathaniel was going to be near Josie after the nephilim learned the Gemini witch's well-kept lie. And Penelope being there wasn't exactly a picnic either, so Nathaniel wasn't at all thrilled.

"I am withdrawing from Miss Mystic Falls," Lizzie stated, walking around the four teenagers until she stood before them. "Effective immediately."

Hope palmed her thighs. "I thought you had something important to tell us."

Penelope put a finger up. "Come for the underwhelming announcement," the witch smiled eerily. "Stay for the epic meltdown."

Nathaniel rolled his eyes. "Why would you quit something you've been looking forward to since Care told you she won?"

"A personal issue with one of the judges," Lizzie mirrored Nathaniel as her eyes rolled. "A direct result of that bitch Dana's sabotage."

Nathaniel snorted.

"She's dead, Lizzie," Hope interjected.

Lizzie scoffed. "Correction. That dead bitch Dana's sabotage, costing me the crown from beyond the grave. The head judge is her mother. The town pharmacist."

"Get to the point," Nathaniel huffed.

Lizzie rolled her eyes. "There's always next year for me. But that does not mean that we here at The Salvatore School shouldn't bring home the title and stick it to those townies."

There was a small pause.

"So," Lizzie continued with a grand smile. "I have studied all of the stats and advanced metrics, and I have chosen our replacement."

Nathaniel could practically feel Josie's cheeks burning from smiling so hard.

And that's when the shoe dropped.

"Hope Mikaelson."

Everyone's face fell.

Nathaniel yawned. "Great speech and all, but I didn't have to be here for all of this."

Lizzie instantly turned to Nathaniel. "Of course you did. Every Miss Mystic Fall's contestant needs her chaperone. You're Hope's."

"Why don't you have her ask Wednesday?"

Penelope snorted. "Trouble in paradise?"

"I could say the same," Nathaniel spat back, and Josie instantly turned uncomfortable. "From where I'm standing, you're not any closer to getting back into her good graces than the last time I saw you."

"Stay out of it," Josie spoke.

"Don't address me," Nathaniel hissed before slowly turning his back to Josie. "The spineless twin finally thinks she grew a backbone. What a joke."

"That's enough, Nate," Hope stated.

Nathaniel just huffed.

There was a smile silence.

"Okay," Lizzie dragged out. "By my calculations, mophead doesn't even coalify to represent Salvatore. You, on the other hand, had almost everyone's vote."

Nathaniel almost argued.

"Just drop it, Lizzie," Hope interjected, a sad look falling over her features.

And a thought came to Nathaniel.

"I'll do it on one condition."

Lizzie rolled her eyes. "What?"

Nathaniel smirked. "Get Ric to let Jed out of his cell and I'll even wear a tie with my tux."

Lizzie smiled. "Okay."

"He tried to kill Landon," Hope disagreed.

"And if he tries again, your little boyfriend will just come back," Nathaniel rolled his eyes before turning to Lizzie. "Have it done by before the dance and you've got yourself a deal."

With that, Nathaniel was out of the room.

just want to update you guys.

1) I've been having a hard time lately, which you've probably noticed because of the lack of updating. Why? Mental health mostly, and just to add wood into the fire, I have recently lost a baby, so yeah, things are rough. (On the plus size, things are looking up. I'm not giving up any time soon).

2) It came to my attention that someone was plagarizing, not just this book, but a few other of mine (here on Wattpad), and I just want to ask you guys to PM me anytime you come across it because I'm filing copyright claims.
Please respect peoples work.
(By plagarizing, I mean literally copy and pasting my work and just changing names).

Anywho, enough of updates,
I made Hate/Nope gifs.
