012.
「012. yes, it's that part now 」
THE EUPHORIA of winning seemed to stop barbie questioning why she found herself zipping across the east river on a hippocampi. but to be honest, even if that wasn't the case, a lot of shit had happened today. most crazy things seemed to pass by in blurs and it wasn't too long before they actually reached camp half-blood. she should also mention that percy was swearing a lot on the way there.
"who the fuck does she think she is?" he'd shouted as they hopped on the hippocampi, "who the fuck does she think she is, taking my pegasus?"
"percy, babe, you might wanna calm-"
"i mean do i steal her fucking paintbrushes? no!"
"percy-"
"honestly what the fuck?!"
by the time they'd arrived at camp half-blood, she'd heard almost every swear word imaginable. both her, annabeth and val with the extra edition of nico stared at each other, as if to say what the fuck is going on? because honestly, none of the three knew exactly what was happening. percy had just dragged the four of them over. it really wasn't explained that much. however barbie got most of it once she saw there was something definitely wrong with the big house. because last time she checked, the big house didn't shoot random green mist everywhere. to be honest, she was kind of offended by the mist. it was like a rip off version of jerald.
what a bunch of wannabe's, jerald grumbled, her voice huffy in barbie's mind.
rachel opened her eyes as they ran towards her. but she looked as if she was sleepwalking, as if she could see them, but only in a dream.
"it's alright," he voice sounded far away, "this is why i've come."
honestly, she looked a bit like a zombie.
"but you'll be destroyed!" percy shouted.
she shook her head, a calming smile stretched across her face, "this is where i belong, percy. i finally understand why."
the house rumbled. the door flew open and green light poured out. barbie recognized the warm musty smell of snakes. mist curled into hundreds of smoky serpents, slithering up the porch columns and curling themselves around the house. then, the oracle stood in the doorway. the withered mummy shuffled towards them in her rainbow dress. she looked even worse than usual, which was saying a lot. her hair was falling out in clumps, her leathery skin was crackling like the seat of a worn-out bus and her glassy eyes stared blanky into space. but here's the creepiest thing, barbie almost had this weird and creepy eeling that they weren't. that they were staring directly at rachel. it was like a scene out of a horror movie.
hopefully the oracle didn't pull out a giant axe and kill them.
rachel held out her arms, not looking scared at all as she spoke, "you've waited too long. but i'm here now."
the sun blazed more brightly, a man appeared above the porch, floating in the air- a blonde guy in a blinding white toga with sunglasses and a cocky smile.
"apollo," barbie spoke, finding herself less dazed the last time she'd seen him. which was weird, because he looked exactly the same. yet he wasn't as attractive as he was before. not as... hot(?) as before...
he winked at her (which was now kind of disgusting) but held up his fingers to his lips. "rachel elizabeth dare," he spoke, "you have the gift of the prophecy. but it is also a curse. are you sure you want this?"
rachel nodded, "it's my destiny."
"do you accept the risks?"
"i do."
"then proceed," the god said.
rachel closed her eyes, "i accept this role. i pledge myself to apollo, god of oracles. i open my eyes to the future and embrace the past. i accept the spirit of delphi, voice of the gods, speaker of riddles, seer of fate."
barbie didn't know where she was getting the words from. a script she'd practiced, maybe? but they flowed out of her as the mist thickened. a green column of smoke, like a huge python, uncoiled from the mummy's mouth and slithered down the stairs, curling affectionately around rachel's feet. the oracle's mummy crumbled, falling away until there was nothing but a pile of dust in an old tie-dyed dress. mist enveloped rachel in a column. the smoke cleared.
rachel collapsed and curled into a fetal position. annabeth, nico, val, percy and barbie rushed forward. but apollo said, "stop! this is the most delicate part!"
"what's going on?" percy demanded, "what do you mean?"
apollo studied rachel with concern, "either the spirit takes hold, or it doesn't."
"and if it doesn't?" asked annabeth.
"gods don't tell me-" began val.
"five syllables," apollo said, counting them on his fingers, "that would be real bad."
despite apollo's warning, percy ran forward and knelt over rachel. rachel was still pale and barely breathing. then, her eyes fluttered open, but she still had a hard time focusing on them.
"percy."
"are you okay?"
she tried to sit up, "ow."
before she could finish, three very worried and angry people stormed up to rachel (i'll let you guess who they are).
"you two are just as reckless as the other!" screeched barbie, kneeling beside rachel, "how-"
"dare you do that to yourself without thinking it through! does logic and drawing up tables mean nothing to you?!" added annabeth, rubbing her temples forcefully as she knelt by rachel.
"honestly this is more stressful than last thanksgiving with my ma," val grumbled, "and i thought nothing could be more stressful than that! this is probably even worse then when my nana- you know what? i- just be responsible!"
"rachel," nico interrupted, side eyeing the three others and percy before turning back to rachel, "your life aura almost faded... completely. i could see you dying."
"i'm alright," she murmured, "but- uh- please help me up. the visions- they're a little disorienting."
"are you sure you're okay?" percy asked.
"apollo drifted down from the porch, "ladies and gentlemen. may i introduce the new oracle of delphi."
"you're kidding," annabeth spoke.
"woah that's cool," val spoke, turning towards rachel giving her a thumbs up, "congrats- even though i thought you died. but- eh."
"it's a little surprising to me too," rachel spoke, managing a weak smile, " but this is my fate. i saw it when i was in new york. i know why i was born with true sight. i was meant to become the oracle."
percy blinked, "you mean you can tell the future now?"
"not all the time," she assured him, " but there are visions, images, words in my mind. when somebody asks me a questions, i- oh no-"
"it's starting," announced apollo.
"lord apollo i think we can tell," mumbled val.
rachel doubled over, as if someone had punched her. then she stood up straight, and her eyes glowed serpent green. when she spoke, her voice sounded tripled- like three rachels were talking at once.
nine half-bloods shall answer the call,
to storm or fire the world must fall.
an oath to keep with a final breath,
and foes bear arms to the doors of death.
at the last words, rachel collapsed. nico and percy caught her and helped her to the porch. she sat there shivering, looking slightly feverish.
"uh," spoke barbie hesitantly before turning to apollo and pointing to rachel, "so is she going to do that a lot now? no offence, but it's a mood killer."
"why are you like this," whispered val, shoving his face into annabeth's shoulder, clearly embarrassed for barbie.
rachel let out a loud laugh, "i'm alright."
"what was that?"
"what was what?" asked rachel, her voice returning to normal.
"i believe," apollo spoke, "that we just the next great prophecy."
percy really didn't mean to look pathetic and lonely. it was just a casual trait of his. he sat by the poseidon table, alone, his mind kind of blank (although it wasn't never exactly... full). he huffed, running a hand through his hair as he stared at the table. normally, he'd be kind of sad he was on his own, but now... it felt good. it was some peace and quiet. and after winning a war and seeing... a lot of shit happen. he thought he deserved that.
well, of course something was about to ruin it. "happy birthday, seaweed brain."
"huh?" he asked in confusion.
"it doesn't matter," laughed annabeth, her hair down (for once) as she smiled at him, "just a little heads up. somebody... may or may not be coming over. a special somebody."
"special? who?"
"i-" began annabeth,"you seriously didn't just say that-"
"who is it?"
"it's barbie!" annabeth blurted out, her eyes wide, "are you- did you loose... like, i dunno- all of your brain cells during that battle?"
"hey i just saved the world!" whined percy, "give me a break, would you?"
she laughed slightly, and he grinned to himself before an idea popped into his mind. he held his laugh in as he looked annabeth dead in the eye and said, "so val, huh?"
"shut up!" she managed to say over covering her face, clearly embarrassed, "that is not the point of this!"
"so you dating him or what? can i give my big scaring don't mess with my best friend speech now?"
"i- yes we're dating and no you can't!" commanded annabeth, pointing a finger at percy.
"but that's like the only good-"
"only?"
"sorry- one of the good things about being your best friend!"
"you're impossible," she huffed, "so stupid and clueless and such a himb-"
"am i missing the party?" came a new voice.
he turned his head slightly to see barbie in all her glory. her hair was straight again, and seemed to be just silky smooth as it used to be. miraculously, the eyebags underneath her eyes and her puffy red cheeks had gone. she was back to normal, smiling slightly. her eyes were saphire blue, with specks pink in them made it unique but utterly gorgeous. but percy noticed the hints of sadness in her eyes she tried to cover up with her pearly-white smile.
she wasn't just breathtaking. no, that wasn't the right word to use here. no, she was ethereal.
"well that's my queue to leave," grinned annabeth, standing up and walking quickly away.
barbie stood still for a moment. as if she was in shock. suddenly she shook her head and frowned slightly and sat down next to him, "wait... did annabeth just say she was..." she gasped and grinned, "i knew it! wait... ew annabeth is kissing my bro- ewww."
percy laughed slightly, "i can't believe i didn't notice until they were holding hands."
"wait are they dating? woah," she said. she sighed before slapping her hand onto her forehead in disappointment, "i can't believe i didn't notice.. i'm a daughter of aphrodite, i should know this stuff! oh my gods."
they laughed for a few moments before the laughing died out. and they just sat there in silence.
"so wanna talk about that promise?" teased barbie, noticing percy's eyes widen.
"i mean- if you- i-" he began. he expected her to laugh at him. but she sat there, smiling at him, her eyes glowing slightly pink. but she blinked and it was gone. it was sort of mesmerising really, and he felt himself calm down as he continued, "well,...when i had to go into the river styx, you needed to think of something to tie you to your mortal self... and on olympus when they-"
"you so wanted to," she teased, a small smile on her face.
"well yeah... but then i thought about you. and y'know...i... i like you. i- and when the battle happened- and just- i thought i was going to die. and i-"
"kissed you on the cheek," she interrupted before laughing slightly, "yeah, continue?"
"you're enjoying yourself way to much," he whined.
"i said continue!" she laughed.
"well- i just really like you! i- i don't know since when- but-"
"well, y'know, i think i might like you a lot as well. i wouldn't have a clue why, of course. you constantly endanger yourself like a fucking dork and you have basically no commen sense-" said barbie in a teasing tone as she scooted a bit closer to percy.
"hey!" percy complained.
"but maybe i do like you... even in all your stupid glory," she finished, a smile on her face before she added, "and red doesn't look like she'll be dating soon."
"red?" asked percy in confusion.
"rachel," supplied barbie.
percy look at her, amused as he grinned, "you seem happy about that."
barbie inched a bit closer, her face coming closer to his so he could clearly see the freckles dotted on her face as she said, "just a bit."
"are you using my line against me, barbie doll?" said percy, moving closer to barbie so their noses were touching.
"wouldn't think of it, water boy," she said quietly before she moved her hands to the back of his neck and finally, their lips touched.
percy remembered their kiss before. well, how could he not? it had played in his mind for months. her lips had been chapped at that point. but now they were soft and warm. he felt her smile after a few moments before she went back to kissing him. percy was almost stunned for a moment. because barbie allen. no, barbara allen, was kissing him.
barbie allen, the girl who was seemingly wild and chaotic but beautiful at the same time. barbie allen, the girl who saved his best friends life. barbie allen, who was selfless. barbie allen, who's eyes glowed pink when she was jealous.
this girl, was kissing him.
and he couldn't be happier.
he pulled her closer, and he could feel her heart pounding- just like his was. percy felt like electric sparks where flying everywhere as they continued. somewhere through, he had no idea when, but barbie began to smile. and he opened her eyes to find hers staring at him, bright pink and glowing slightly before the both of them closed their eyes and continued.
however they didn't have long as the fireworks of their kissed ended abruptly as they heard cheers and the two of them broke apart, blushing. percy grabbed her hand and squeezed it and she smiled at him. smiling properly for the first time since silena had died. the blush on her face was very prominent, but percy didn't mind. because he thought it looked adorable.
"finally!" yelled val as him and annabeth stepped towards them hand in hand, followed by a few others campers.
percy held back a groan as he heard barbie giggle at the situation. "c'mon guys," he whined, "is there no privacy around here?"
"the love birds need to cool off!" said clarisse as campers cheered for percy and barbie, who were both very red in the face.
"the canoe lake!" said connor stoll with a smile.
"oh that's exactly what they need!" commented travis, who katie was currently leaning on, "gods this is the better than the day that pizza guy got lost!"
"the canoe lake!" conner repeating, yelling as it as if it were the only phrase he knew.
"oh gods," mumbled barbie as she covered her face with percy's shoulder, "i beg of you i don't want my hair to get wet. please- please i'll do anyt-"
but nobody really listened to her complains. the crowd cheered as they held up the two up. they kept them both close enough so they could hold hands, but they raced down the hill to the canoe lake and dumped them in the water. barbie screamed the whole way, swearing curses at the rest of the campers.
"you bunch of traitors- i- kenji ito you stop laughing right now!"
and then more.
"no put me down- put me down!"
and, well, you get the gist of it, right?
but the jokes on them, because percy made a little air bubble under the water full of oxygen for the both of them.
barbie laughed at his antics, "when do you think they realised you did this?"
he moved closer to her and leaned in for another kiss, "hopefully never."
the kiss broke slightly as barbie stared at percy, her eyes were faintly glowing pink and she had a cute little grin on her face. percy laughed. she pouted at him, "what? why are you laughing?"
"you're eyes," he chuckled, "they're pink. they're like the eyes of a car engine."
"did you just compare me to a car?" she spoke, leaning back from him with a fake offended look on her face before she shook her head, "damn you have no idea how to treat a girl, do you?"
"i-"
"oh well," she shrugged, finding herself not being able to help it as she let out a loud laugh, "i'll deal with that later. close your eyes water boy, might get blinded by my car eyes."
"i'll deal with that later then too," he teased, laughing slightly at her comment.
she leaned back so he couldn't reach to kiss her and she crossed her arms in the bubble, "stop repeating stuff i say."
he grinned at her "stop repeating stuff i say."
he copied her movements as she crossed her arms, but he exaggerated it, which made her laugh. she stayed silent for a moment before the glow in her eyes appeared brighter. she grinned at him and said, "kiss me."
percy didn't need to repeat that again, because her lips were already on his.
and yeah, maybe it was just a bit cheesy to say, but percy jackson was pretty sure it was the best underwater kiss ever.
