• Chapter 11 •
"So, do you definitely think you'll tell him?" I asked Sirius who was pacing nervously up and down his living room.
"I don't know."
"And you're sure that you don't want us to be there? We've already been there for every other step of the way so why not the day when you possibly tell him." James said.
"I don't know if I'll tell him but it needs to be right and it can be right if you're here." Sirius said.
"What time is he getting here?" I asked.
"I think about ten or so. I texted him about half an hour ago but I haven't checked it. I think I got a text about ten minutes ago but I don't want to see eager - "
"Oh just check your damn phone!" I ordered and Sirius obediently grabbed his phone from the coffee table.
"There's a text." He said, his face lighting up. Slowly, however, the colour drained from his cheeks, his look of happiness being replaced by one of sheer panic. "Oh no." he said softly.
"What's wrong?" James asked as the pair of us walked over to Sirius, "Is he cancelling? You bought Mrs Doubtfire and everything, he can't cancel!"
"No, he's on his way but I got another text too that wasn't from him..." Sirius said ominously.
"Who is it then? Stop with all this mystery and just tell us.." I said irritably.
"It's Regulus... he's in town for the day for some work thing and wants to crash here for a few hours to get ready..." Sirius said, his face paling.
"Why are you only finding this out now?" I asked, standing up and starting to pace nervously. Things usually went wrong in our plans quite fast but this was some sort of record.
"Because he's my brother, he does this sometimes."
"Maybe you can lock him out." James suggested.
"He has a key and I can't lock him out because then he'd probably wait outside for ages like an idiot and tell Mum and then I'd be in trouble." Sirius said.
"Aw, Mummy would tell you off, would she?" James teased.
"Shut up, Prongs! Oh this is a disaster."
"Well, then cancel!" I said.
"I can't cancel, he's on his way and judging from the amount of kisses, he's really excited too!"
"Well, then we'll just have to make Regulus... disappear..." James said a little ominously.
"We're not in the bloody mafia, Prongs, I'm not going to make my brother disappear ." Sirius said, pacing up and down frantically.
"That would be amusing though especially if they found out that you'd been using his identity to date some random guy. They'd probably arrest you on the spot, it would be hilarious." James laughed.
"That wouldn't be hilarious because I'd be in prison! With a pretty face like mine, do you really think I'd last?" Sirius said looking genuinely horrified which made James snigger even harder, "Anyway, we're not making him disappear!"
"When is he getting here?"
"He said 20 minutes about 10 minutes ago so he'll be in here ten minutes!" Sirius whined.
"I need a time." I said, "It's twenty to ten now."
"9.50. He'll be here at 9.50." Sirius said firmly, "Remus will be here at ten."
"Okay, okay, that's fine... how about we tell him?" I suggested.
"Absolutely not, Regulus likes taking the moral high ground and he'd be annoyed that I'd used his name."
"Okay, so how about instead... me and James keep him in the kitchen or your bedroom?"
"I might need them though, especially the bedroom..." Sirius said with a hint of a smirk.
"Jesus, Sirius work with me here." I said.
"...And after you've told him, you're not going to need the bedroom, let's be realistic here, Padfoot." James smirked.
"I am being realistic, have you seen me?"
"GUYS!" I yelled suddenly and both of their heads whipped around towards me, "We have ten minutes until Regulus gets, here! We don't have any time to get off topic. Okay, now everyone is paying attention - "
"There's two of us, does the word everyone really apply here?" James said.
"Shut up, James, we have not time to waste!"
"How about we try and move him from room to room, we start in the kitchen and then if we need it, we tell him. We can crawl and stuff..." James said.
I looked over at Sirius expecting to see him looking even more annoyed and horrified at the worst plan in history but instead he looked surprisingly calm, "I like it, let's do it. It's adaptable..."
"Or you could just tell him not to stay..." I said looking between the two of them, confused.
"I did say ages ago he could stop by whenever and I had this girl over last time he came so I really have no excuse, he's my brother. Besides elaborate plans that shouldn't work but do is kind of our thing now, Dorcas, it's a tradition now." Sirius said and I annoyingly gave in as he was kind of right. It wouldn't be right if we took the easy and boring way out.
"Fine but if I snag my fishnets whilst I crawl on your floor, then you're buying me a new pair." I huffed.
"I don't know why you wore fishnets under your jeans." Sirius said.
"It's called dedication to an aesthetic, Sirius, look it up!" I snapped.
The three of us waited tensely as it slowly became closer and closer to Regulus's arrival. I sort of hoped that maybe Regulus would cancel and we could got back to the marginally better plan that was wine and Mrs Doubtfire but at 9.50, on the dot, there was a knock on the door. For a second, none of us moved and I wondered how long it would take for Regulus to leave if we just left him outside on the landing. Slowly, Sirius arose from the sofa and walked over to the door, his face morphing into a forced smile as Regulus walked in.
Regulus and Sirius did have a clear resemblance although not enough to pass as identical twins. Remus's face was slightly thinner, his jawline slightly less defined. He was still good looking but in a slightly more feminine way than Sirius. He was also completely different to Sirius in terms of personality. Sirius was loud, confident and sometimes quite narcissistic whereas Regulus was a lot quieter and serious although according to Sirius he was actually quite forceful and loud once you got to know him, he just concealed it. Unlike Sirius who embraced his good looks, Regulus seemed almost crippled by it, unhappy with the attention it brought.
"Hey Siri..." He said in a soft voice, "Thank you so much for letting me crash here for a few hours, I'm literally exhausted. These must be your friends, I think I've met you before James a bit and you are...?"
"Dorcas." I told him.
"Siri's mentioned you a few times, nice to finally put a name to a face. Siri, is it okay if I watch TV?"
"No." Sirius said quickly, "I mean I would but I'm watching it and I want to watch it alone..."
"But you have friends here..." Regulus pointed out.
"I know, they're not watching with me." Sirius said in a nonchalant tone, "They're just chilling in the kitchen whilst I watch with ... another friend."
"I thought you said you'd be alone..."
"I mean alone together with this other friend. They just like hanging out here because they're flats are being done up... they live in the same building so I said they could chill here, same as you..." Sirius said, continuing to pile onto his elaborate lie. Regulus gave him a confused look which Sirius returned. The two brothers had a slight stare off before Regulus backed down, raising his hands in defeat.
"Fine, where do you want me to go then?" Regulus said looking a little irritated.
"Um... kitchen, same as them. I have one of those breakfast bar things with stalls so you can sit down too."
"What a luxury." Regulus said, "But a kitchen is better than sitting in a random café for a few hours so I'll take it."
Suddenly there was a loud knock and Sirius frantically ushered us into the kitchen.
"Pretend you're not here." He hissed and Regulus looked instantly suspicious.
"Siri, what is going on?..." He whispered back but James quickly pulled him into the kitchen behind us and closed the door. The walls were quiet thin, so I could sort of make out what Remus and Sirius were saying as they came in which would come in handy later if we wanted to listen.
"What is going on?" Regulus whispered to us, "Why are we hiding in the kitchen? Siri's never had a problem with me hanging around the apartment before when he's had some guy or girl over."
"Um... this is different." I said as quietly as I could even though I'd often been told that I was a really obvious whisperer.
"Why? Does he really like them or something."
"Yeah, he does." James said.
"Then why didn't he just tell me? Also if he really likes him then why can't I meet him?" I desperately tried to think of a convincing answer that didn't make him any more suspicious than he was.
"It's just he wanted the flat to himself..." James said, "And he didn't want to turn you away either so this is happening now..."
"Then why did he have you two over before I came?" Regulus was really not holding back on the questions and my lies were not as good as Sirius's.
"Because we were uninvited guests too." I said through slightly gritted teeth, "How about no more questions, Regulus."
Regulus raised as sceptical eyebrow at me but he stopped his interrogation, pulling out his phone instead. Relief filled my body, lying didn't come as easily to me and James as it did so Sirius. Sirius's skill for lying was incredible, he literally became the lie in an effortless way that I could probably never achieve. I was slightly envious but his skill for lying had made him a little bigheaded and led him into awkward situations such as the one we were in right now.
James had his ear pressed against the door and I shuffled over to join him.
"Anything interesting?" I whispered.
"Not really, I can only make out bits and pieces, they've gone quiet now that the movie is on." James said, listening intently, "I still can't believe that they're watching Mrs Doubtfire on a date, it's not a very date film. Lily wouldn't like it."
"How are things going with you two?"
"Pretty good, better than them anyway, she actually knows who I am and likes me for me rather than the imaginary twin I'd created - "
"What?" Both of us looked over to see Regulus watching us. I hadn't even realised he'd been listening, "Is Sirius pretending to be someone else to sleep with someone?"
"How did you figure it out so fast, Remus still doesn't know! You figured it out in seconds."
"I mean, I figured it out from what you just said. You two are loud whisperers." He said, a smirk forming on his face that made him look ridiuclously like Sirius, "That's messed up, he needs to stop doing things like this..."
He stood up purposefully and advanced towards the door but I instantly stood up, blocking the door with my body.
"I can't let you leave, Regulus, he's going to tell him today." I said.
"Dorcas, someone needs to tell this poor boy that he's being decieved."
"You speak so poshly, who says the word deceived in a sentence." James said unhelpfully and the scowl that had settled on his face worsened.
"He's going to tell him today though..." I said weakly.
"Is he? Or is he just going to chicken out?" Regulus said, his hand lunging for the door knob. Luckily me and James were prepared for this and all of three of our hands met awkwardly on the door handle, "Let me out."
"Regulus, I can't let you go." I said but Regulus was determined and the three of us had an awkward fight over the door. Although it was technically two against one, me and James weren't fighting to the best of our abilities as we were trying to keep the fight as quiet as possible so Remus didn't figure out we were in the kitchen. It was difficult but we actually managed to do suprisingly well until we heard a loud small behind us.
The three of us whipped around and saw Sirius's bowl of fruit lying on the floor, smashed into tiny shards that were scattered around. Regulus saw his opportunity as both me and James were distracted and wrenched open the door that I was leaning on which made me stumble out into the corridor before falling against the wall.
A small part of me hoped that Remus would somehow not noticed but that was too good to be true. I heard the film pause and two sets of footsteps coming towards me. James rapidly closed the door shut to prevent Regulus giving the plan up leaving me sitting against the wall like an idiot.
"Dorcas?..." Sirius said, unconvincingly feigning surprise, "Did you break in?"
"What...?" I said, too irritated to comprehend anything.
"Are you okay, what happened?" Remus asked, helping me up looking confused, "What are you doing here?"
"Oh... my flat is being redone so I thought I'd come in here and then I tripped and fell..." I said.
"I didn't hear the front door open though..." Remus said, looking at me with evident suspicion, "Where you in here the whole time?" Sirius looked at me, his eyes wide with panic and I racked my brain for a good answer. Before I could come up with one though, the door slammed opened and Regulus burst out. Unfortunately I was standing behind the door and got hit in the face with it which I sincerely hoped wouldn't permanently give me brain damage.
Remus jumped back into Sirius's arms at the strange man who had just burst out of the kitchen. Judging from Regulus's panting, him and James had continued the fight for the door and it had been intense.
"Regulus, what is going on?" Remus asked looking over at Sirius. I could immediately see the plan unravelling as Regulus's eyes lit up with recognition at his name being said.
"I don't know how you know my name or who you are but I need to tell you something, Sirius has been lying to you..." Regulus said, still short of breath from the fight.
"I don't know you're name and I haven't spoken to Sirius since the party that him and Regulus held..." I was still quite astonished that Remus hadn't figured out what was going on.
"What but I didn't host a party..." Regulus said and I slowly saw the realisation dawn on Remus's face as he figured out what was going on. His face hardened as he turned to Sirius, "You're not Regulus are you. You're Sirius and you always have been."
"Maybe..." Sirius said sheepishly, "But Regulus really is my brother, I didn't lie about that so that's a good thing..."
Remus's face didn't soften at all, if anything it became even more horrified than before.
"You stole your brother's identity just to date me?..." Remus said looking completely horrified, "You were so convincing, you seemed so different... I'm such an idiot." Remus finished after his pause, his face twisting in anger, "I have to go, right now."
With that he stormed out of the flat, his face flushed in anger. Sirius stared after him desperately, for once his smooth talking and lies couldn't get him out of the situation.
That literally could not have gone any worse.
