• Chapter 1 •
"I have literally never been so hungover in my life." I groaned, attempting to stand up but instead sort of rolling out and onto the floor with a loud thump. I decided that maybe standing up was overrated and that I should probably just live out my life on this floor now.
"Me too, high five!" Sirius muttered from above me, holding out a limp hand to me.
"You do realise I'm not going to high five you for this." I replied, curling up into a little ball, "High fives are for good things and THIS is the complete opposite of that."
I was happy just to spend all day on the floor until my head stopped feeling like somebody was hitting it with a hammer repeatedly but James had other ideas.
"Come on, you two, it's not that bad." James said, ridiculously perky. He was standing at the end of the bed, tugging on Sirius's leg and I tried to be as invisible as possible, knowing that I'd be next in line for his harsh wake up. I heard his footsteps slowly walk over to me and prayed that he'd go away.
"Dorcas!" He whispered in my ear yet somehow it was the loudest thing I'd ever heard. I yanked a pillow out from underneath Sirius's head and held it onto the side of my head. I heard him sigh and walk away and for a second I thought I'd won and he'd let me sleep but this was James Potter. James Potter always won in the end.
With a tug, he pulled open the curtains, letting the bright rays of sunlight flood the room. Me and Sirius both recoiled in horror. Normally I would stand up and fight him for control of the curtains but that seemed like an awful lot of unnecessary walking and my cold, hard floor had morphed into a luxury bed for me.
"Come on, let's not waste the day." James pleaded, "We could go and get something to eat at a café... the Pumpkin Pasty perhaps?"
Suddenly James's random persistence in making us get up made a LOT of sense. He had a massive thing for the beautiful, sassy redhead who worked there. No wonder, he wouldn't let this go.
"Prongs, if this is about that ginger bird, then I swear to - "
"It's not!" James said, suddenly flustered. I smirked at him, "Don't look at me like that Dorcas... It's not. Even if it was, you have to admit that their cakes are to die for."
I tried to fight the image of their delicious chocolate fudge cake but it was hard and with every thought of its smooth butter icing, I could feel my motivation slowly seeping back in. James clearly noticed a shift in my attitude and knelt down next to me.
"Come on, Dorcas, think of that soft, chocolate sponge cake with the gooey caramel and that butter icing that just seems to melt in your mouth..." He whispered to me.
"Fine!" I snapped, pulling myself up a mixture of him and the bedside table, "I'll go with you but only for the cake. And if you think I'm getting dressed for this then you are WRONG!"
He laughed and said triumphantly, "I wouldn't dream of it, slippers out of the house is so chic nowadays."
"Well, you two can go," I heard Sirius mutter, "But I'm staying right here and you can't make me go."
"Wouldn't dream of it, Padfoot. We'll probably have a better time without you anyway." James laughed as we left the room. He somehow managed to walk with a spring in his step despite how drunk he'd been the night before. I was the complete opposite, walking like one of those zombies that's just been woken up and wants to go back to his coffin where it was cosy and warm.
I got a few funny looks as we left James's building but I felt that my circular sunglasses on such a cold, miserable let people know I was either hungover or blind which either way gave me an excuse for my pyjamas. I looked like a homeless person right now with my blonde hair tangled in yesterday's bun.
"I can't believe you talked me into this." I suddenly heard an bored, arrogant voice behind us say. We both turned around to see Sirius walking behind us. I felt bad but I hadn't even noticed he'd joined us.
"We didn't," I said slowly, "You just came."
"Yeah...well...same thing." He said irritably as three of us headed over to the café.
The moment we walked in, James eyes scanned the room for his redheaded waitress as usual except this time, instead turning to us with a look of excitement, he looked confused.
"She's not here." He said, shock dawning on his face, "You don't think she's left do you?"
"Maybe. Don't worry though, I'm sure your persistent, daily visits had NOTHING to do with it" I said, sarcastically. Sirius laughed with me at this but James looked crestfallen.
"I'm going to ask." He walked over to the peaky, tall guy at the counter. I'd never seen him before, he was quite distinctive with a thin face and large, brown eyes. He was attractive in a weird way but not really my type. He looked a little too awkward for me - if he jumped when James spoke to him, what would he be like on a date?
"New guy's kind of cute. Do you reckon he'll be our server today?" I heard Sirius say, as I watched him slowly morph from my chill, sarcastic friend to smooth, edgy Sirius. I rolled my eyes at him, the moment he saw somebody he fancied, he seemed to change into a charming asshole.
"I don't know, probably?" I said, watching Sirius carefully, "Geez, calm down Sirius, I can still smell the last guy's cologne on you. Besides, you haven't even spoken to him yet, you might hate him."
Sirius shrugged, "You don't need to like someone to sleep with them. He seems kind of shy, I'm sure he'll be happy to have my attention and fall straight into my arms, just you see. I can serve him something he'll never forget..."
"Don't say that to him or he'll quit on the spot." I muttered as James walked back to us, a relieved look on her face.
"Lily hasn't left, she's just away for the weekend visiting family, she'll be back on Monday." He said, sitting down on a table next to us, "Are you guys going to sit down or what? I'm starving. What are you staring at?"
Me and Sirius sat down in time, both of us still looking at the new server. James furrowed his brow and turned to where we were looking. The new server noticed us all staring and gave a slight wave. We all turned away abruptly, Sirius looked a little embarrassed, only James was amused.
"Sirius, you like the new waiter?" He lowered his voice as he spoke.
"He's cute, Dorcas agrees."
"I never said that!" I protested Sirius's really random lie.
"I think he'll come and take our order soon, you can talk to him then." James said, leaning back on his chair casually, "If you want any tips about how to get waiters to love you, I am the expert. Lily will like me one of these days, I reckon she's falling for me slowly."
"That's not what you told me last night, didn't she compare you to a giant squid - " I began but Sirius began shushing us and we fell silent.
"Be cool." He hissed at us, casually leaning on his chair as the new waiter came over. I suddenly couldn't remember what I usually did with my hands and ended up awkwardly placing them on my lap like a schoolgirl.
"Hi, my name is Remus and I'll be your waiter today, what can I get you." He said in a small voice. He seemed small and shy and I felt the urge to protect him from the world. Sirius looked at me and James expectantly - he clearly wanted to go last.
"Um... chocolate fudge cake and a... that's all actually." Sirius glared at me as I stammered through my order. I was usually fine with waiters but when somebody tells you to "be cool", it's a lot of pressure and I don't do well under pressure.
"Just a coffee for me, thanks." James said casually, glancing over at Remus who was preparing to bring out the moves on our poor server, Remus.
"I think I'll have the cheesecake with a side order of your number." He said suavely, "And I do believe that your number also comes with a free helping of drinks tonight with me?"
"Damn, when I tried that on Lily she said that the offer had expired the day I walked in." James whispered to me.
"Um... I don't think we do that here. This is a café..." Remus said a little awkwardly and Sirius looked a little taken aback. I wasn't sure whether Remus was messing with him or genuinely didn't realise that it was flirting.
"No, I'm asking you out tonight..." Sirius said finally, speaking slowly as if he was talking to a child.
"I got that... I was talking about the cheesecake..." He said raising an eyebrow, skipping over the date part, "We could have some lovely chocolate cake if you'd like that instead, sir."
"Er... I'd rather have your number..." Sirius said, looking from us to Remus, a confused look on his face. I don't know what he'd been expecting with such a bad pick up line but it definitely wasn't this.
"I'm sorry, I hope you don't tip me less for this or anything, I'm just not that sort of guy. I'm your waiter. Shall I get you the chocolate cake or are you okay?" He said, looking a little awkward, clearly desperate to get away. I somehow managed to keep a straight face even though Sirius's face was priceless.
"... I'm okay." Sirius said, his face still mingled with confusion and disbelief that somebody didn't fall for his charms. Remus began to walk away but Sirius whipped around and called after him, "What do you mean you're not that sort of guy? What does that mean?"
"...Maybe I should get Marlene to take over..." He said hastily, looking over at the counter where another one of the waitresses was fiddling with her hair. I felt a little sorry for Marlene, the amount of times Lily had asked to take over the table for her must be hard.
"No, I... I don't mean to make you uncomfortable, I just don't know what you meant by that." Sirius said, retaining his cool again. Remus paused for a while, clearly trying to think of the least offensive way to reject Sirius.
"I just meant that... I wouldn't really go for a guy who hits on me at a café, I think it says a lot about the person, not bad just not really my type...I'm sure some people would love it but I'm just not that sort of guy." He said finally and firmly before dashing off so Sirius couldn't get another word in.
For the next few minutes, Sirius didn't say a word, he simply sat there sort of sulkily.
"Ah, Sirius, don't feel too bad, everybody gets rejected sometimes, happens to the best of us." I said, gently patting his shoulder. Remus had been replaced by Marlene who had given us our stuff without so much as a word in edgeways, not that any of us really felt like talking to her either.
"Yeah, you've been rejected before. You're lucky anyway, you've been rejected less times than you haven't." James chimed in, sipping his coffee cheerily.
"But not like this." Sirius said, pouting over at Remus who was strategically avoiding eye contact at the coffee machine, "He just was so up front about it and he didn't even give me a chance. I've never had anything like it."
There was an unfamiliar gleam in his eyes that I hadn't seen before as he looked over at Remus.
"There'll be other guys," James said casually, "I say don't get hung up on one, just get up, straighten your jacket and move on."
"You're hardly one to talk..." Sirius began but I cut in, sensing a squabble about to start.
"Enough, Sirius, James may be a hypocrite about this - "
"Hey!" James said, spitting out his coffee.
"It's true, James. Anyway, some people just won't go for what you've got and that's fine. He's probably just not into the whole confidence thing, maybe he's just a lone wolf - " I said, my speech slowly becoming more and more passionate until Sirius cut me off.
"That's great, Dorcas, but I have a better plan. I will tame the lone wolf and now in a weird stalker-ish way like James and his redhead. In a brilliant Sirius Black way." He slammed his hand on the table as he stood up, causing everybody but Remus to turn around, "I'll be back soon... maybe tomorrow."
"Sirius, mate, what are you doing?" James asked in the same tone you would use with a naught child. I lowered my glasses sceptically at him but he was unfazed.
"This is not the end of this." He grinned wickedly, "I, Sirius Black, will tame the lone wolf."
