13. Sokovia

At some point during our flight to Sokovia, I managed to fall asleep in my chair with my head resting on Wanda's shoulder. God bless her for not shoving me off and just allowing me to rest. But, they say all good things must come to an end, as did my nap. I'm awoken by Wanda gently nudging me while whispering for me to 'wake up' as the aircraft rumbles. I protest sleepily, but open my eyes and pull myself off Wanda's shoulder nevertheless. The jet comes to a hovering stop as the cargo door drops, allowing Thor and Bruce to hop out. "What's going on?" I ask, voice raspy from sleep.

"We're dropping off Dr. Banner and Thor at the castle. One of your members apparently is inside." Wanda answers me, a distant look on her face briefly as she speaks about the castle. "How did you sleep?"

"Considering the conditions, strangely well. Thanks for not pushing me off onto the floor." I chuckle and rub my eyes with the palm of my hand.

"No problem." She smiles and then slowly leans in to whisper in my ear. "My brother practically couldn't keep his eyes off you the entire flight here." Her voice holds the utmost amount of amusement. "I think he even grew worried when we hit turbulence like he was frightened that it would wake you. That or it was just a general concern." A bark of a laugh escapes me before I can control myself and I see Wanda grinning broadly beside me. It's not even been a whole 24hrs of them being brought into the team and Wanda and I are getting along like long-lost high school best friends. I have a good feeling the lot of us are going to get along great. I shake my head and sweep my hands over my hair to make sure its lying flat. "I think he even envied my position." She shoots her brother a look before the two of us stand up, getting ready to disembark the jet that had now made it to the outskirts of Sokovia.

"I mean, when you're as hot as I am, I would also." I joke and pull my jacket tighter around myself just as the devil himself gets out of his seat and steps over to the two of us.

"Did you sleep well?" The male Maximoff twin asks as he ruffles his own hair. "How's your wound?"

"I slept very well thank you, and I believe my injury is almost healed now." I offer a friendly smile as Pietro lifts a brow at me. "Oh, yeah. HYDRA enjoyed their DNA splicing and suppose I inherited quickened healing." I shrug at the curious twins before following The Vision out of the now lowered hanger door.

"Alright, everybody knows the plan?" The Captain asks once the entire team leaves the ship. I lift my hand into the air as I yawn.

"I think I was asleep. What's the plan now?" I'm almost positive I see Steve catch himself before he can either swear or sigh in agitation. He takes a deep, calming breath before he looks at me.

"Clear the city -- get the citizens to safety." He says briefly before walking past me, headed straight for the town.

"Oh, I was awake for that. I didn't realize that was the entire plan, though." The twins come up beside me and chuckle. "Well, I guess we should get to being heroes, hm?" I turn my head to the left and right, flashing both the Maximoff's a smile before jogging to catch up with Rogers, the rest of the team on my heels.

The moment we enter the city, the entire team branches out in different directions to begin assisting the citizens to safety. Pietro gives his sister a hug and then ruffles my hair before dashing off before I can smack him. Wanda then branches off after we tell each other to stay safe. She heads directly into the middle of the city with Barton following behind her. Steve and I stay back on the bridge to escort people over and be traffic control. Meanwhile, Tony and The Vision fly off to God-knows-where. Eventually, the cops show up and begin to assist Captain Rogers and me with getting the people out of town in an orderly fashion. There is chaos, yes, but at least nobody is fighting. Everybody seems more intent on getting out of here. I mean, come on, if the Avengers show up and say 'hey it's time for you guys to evacuate' wouldn't you think something bad is about to happen and want to get the hell out of dodge? "Iris, stay here, keep helping them across the bridge!" Steve yells at me before taking off, heading against the flow of traffic.

"Wait, where are you going?! What if I accidentally set something or someone on fire? I need adult supervision!" I shout at him but he keeps running. "Gosh dang it, Steve." I huff but continue to usher people over the bridge, shouting encouragement that everything would hopefully be okay so long as they listened to my instructions. I'm wrong, though. Or I jinxed it. I think I'm gonna go with I jinxed it considering my general luck. As soon as Steve leaves, not but a minute later, there's a whirring noise. Rocks cracking, structures creaking, and people screaming follow. I turn in a full circle, taking in the new mayhem.

Ultron has created a vast army of psychopathic murder bots with one of two purposes: kill everybody or send them into such a panic our plans of helping them would fail helplessly.

An explosion happens across the bridge, lighting up a car and sending it onto its side as people scream and become more desperate to escape. Whatever system of order we had going to get people over the bridge is gone. Now it's dog-eat-dog. People are pushing and shoving, screaming and crying, and shouting profanities as they run, careless to any item they may have dropped in the process. All the while, Ultron's minions fly in formation over the city and the bridge, setting off explosions and firing at anything that moves, which scares everybody even more. "Everybody chill out! We need to move carefully, not in panicked masses!" I shout over the noise of screams and explosions. Nobody seems to hear me, as they all continue to push and shove, and people in their cars blare their horns and floor it across the bridge.

Utter chaos and I'm in the middle of it.

Why did Steve think it would be such a good idea to leave me here? With an important job? Didn't he know I'm a hazard with a small fuse? I turn my head as bots begin landing on the bridge a few yards away from the one I'm on. It seems the Captain abandoned me for another bridge and now he was having to fight the robots.

Ha. He should have stayed over here where the robots aren't attacking people-

I'm suddenly laying on my back, the back of my head throbbing as it connects with the bricked street.

Note to self: don't get distracted when Ultron has psycho bots flying about the town.

I groan, the sharp pulsing against my skull becoming even more intense as I sit up. My ears are ringing annoyingly but faint screams can be heard still. Blinking my eyes quickly, I force myself up and demand my legs hold me up. I jinxed it again. The robots came to my bridge to fight and cause terror also. "Hey, metal mouths! I bet you can't touch this fine piece of-!" I shout, causing all of the blue-eyed machines to turn to look at me where I'm standing and away from inflicting horror on the innocent civilians. This causes me to stop short on my taunt. At once they all come running and flying at me. "Ah, crap." I probably should not have just dared them to come at me all at once. Either way, I had, and now I have to deal with them. One of the closest robots comes inches from tackling me again, but I reroute its energy to one of the others, making it overload before finally exploding. Killing two birds with one stone? Nice. My excitement is short lived as there are at least another half-dozen swarming around in front of me. I would have sworn if I wasn't intently trying to come up with a good way to take them all out at once. I, of course, am not too quick on my feet -- literally and figuratively. I end up getting shot at by one of the machines, which interrupts any plan that had previously been forming in my head. Without permission, a sharp cry escapes my mouth as the blast hits me in the abdomen, sending me slamming into an abandoned car. As if my cry is a call for help, Pietro turns up like a white knight to help. He manages to take out the two robots who are not airborne, one of which is the one that had shot me with its repulsor beam before he darts to my side.

"Iris? Are you hurt?" Pietro asks, placing a hand on my shoulder to keep me from doubling over onto the ground.

"No, I'm peachy." I ground out, sounding breathless. "Yes, I'm hurt. I just got shot by a knock-off Stark suit. What is it with shooting people in the abdomen? Is that like a Stark trait?" I wrap one of my arms around my abdomen and lift the other into the air without looking up. "I could've taken them." I say.

"I'm sure you could have." I can hear the smirk in the speedster's voice. I turn my attention back to the robots at hand and concentrate on overpowering them. I listen as I hear a distinct sound of creaking metal. "How did you do that?" The speedster asks suddenly, sounding shocked.

"Do what?" I finally lift my head, my breathing returning to a regular rate, as I look over to where the fallen robots are a bright orangeish-red color. Their glowing nature can only mean they're burning hot chunks of metal. "Oh, that. Yeah, just kinda flooded them with power. I was just really mad that my shirt got ruined again and I guess that kinda happened. I was aiming for a robot explosion, but this works too." My nose twitches as I smile at the worried Pietro, who is still watching me intently with concern. His worry soon melts away as he smiles back at me.

"Will you be alright?" He questions me. I nod and do my best to straighten up.

"Go be a hero. We can meet up in a minute and tag team these sons of guns." I reply, casting the ruined robots a glare.

"Well, technically they are sons of guns." The blonde-haired Maximoff says before darting off before I can make a snappy remark. I watch as he dismantles a host of Ultron's minions as he takes off toward the inner part of the town.

"Show off," I mutter to myself and watch the trail of blue that follows him disappear from my sight. Hopefully, he'll take out more of these blasted creations.

By now, something else has happened as the city literally begins to rumble and shake. This causes buildings to crumble and the streets to tear in two. Part of the city is beginning to lift from the ground. Whoever didn't manage to get off the now floating rock is trapped, which is very bad. The Avengers are trapped. I'm trapped. And who knows how many people failed to get out of town? How many are we now charged with protecting? I turn quickly as I watch the other half of the bridge begin to crumble and fall. I dash forward as quickly as I can with my injury and pull a young lady away from the edge before she can tip over the edge. She screams before clinging to me for dear life as I back the two of us away from the ever-growing distance between the lifted area and the stable ground. Cars that had been on the edge begin to teeter before ultimately falling back to the earth. I escort the lady off the bridge and into the city square. I point to a police officer not far from us that's with a group of stranded people. "Go over there. Tell him he needs to get people off the street. We need to get everybody somewhere safe, like a stable building, away from the fighting. Those robots are targeting moving objects, which means people." She nods, tears leaking down her eyes as she trembles before dashing over to the policeman I pointed out to her. That's when I decide to abandon my post at the bridge and slowly jog to where the Captain is. I'm shaky and unstable as I run, merely for the fact that the city is shaking and rumbling as it rises into the air and because I'm injured. "Steve!" I shout at him as I approach the bridge, where he watches us rise despite gravity. Now not only are we moving up, but the city is also moving at an angle too, which causes me even more instability. I weave my way through the abandoned cars to Steve's side. To make matters worse, Ultron's creepy robots are now all speaking in unison.

"Do you see the beauty of it? The inevitability? You rise, only to fall." There's a brief pause and I look over at where Steve stands, where a look of horror is on his face. "You, Avengers, you are my meteor. My swift and terrible sword. And the earth will crack with the weight of your failure." I reach out and steady myself by placing a hand on a car's hood while I turn my head left to right. I try to come up with a solution to get us and all these stranded people out of this situation, only to come up empty. "Purge me from your computers, turn my own flesh against me." I can only assume he is referring to Vision. "It means nothing. When the dust settles, the only thing living in this world will be metal." Well, that doesn't sound creepy at all.

"Stev-" Before I can finish, Steve brings a fist up without turning or looking and connects it with the face of a robot that had been trying to sneak up on him, the same one I was trying to warn him about. "Oh, okay, never mind then." My head swivels around as I hear a distant, startling roar, which can only come from the Hulk. But as I turn my attention back around, I see a pack of airborne robots flying straight toward Steve and I. Neither of us have time to react and Steve gets tackled backward into a car's hood. I, on the other hand, am grabbed and lifted into the air by a robot who has a steely grasp on my free arm.

"Oh, hell no!" I shout and flail my legs as I'm lifted higher. Do these guys realize I don't like being ferried around by their ugly mugs? However, I decide it's not a good idea to try and struggle because if this machine drops me I may become even more injured and be of little use in helping the Avengers. Or, you know, dead. I stare wide-eyed at the streets and buildings below me as I'm carried away.

"Cap you got incoming." Tony says into the comms, late with that revelation.

"Incoming already came in. One of them got Iris." I hear him reply back, sounding strained and worried.

"Now why would they need to take her? Wouldn't they have thought to have taken you instead?" I hear Tony say, exasperated. I mean to reply but I forgot to ask just exactly how to work the comms. Looks like I'm stuck with just listening to their conversations for now.

"Stark you worry about bringing this city back down safely. Anyone else, see if you can get a location on Iris and get her back. The rest of us have one job: tear these things apart." Steve says, getting all commanding and authoritative. "You get hurt, hurt 'em back. You get killed...walk it off."

I watch carefully as we approach the center of the floating part of the city, where an old dome-shaped building is. Then the robot that seized me begins to descend before finally landing right outside of it. Inside I can see a large metal contraption jutting from the middle and a puffy looking, tall metal man that is much larger and different in style than the robots that were striking terror all around the town.

Ultron.
