Demons That Look Like Angels
━━━━━━━━
"SHE'll BE DEVASTATED."
Damon rolled his eyes. "Just tell her it's for the greater good!"
Rebekah glared. "My sister is going to lose one of her pack mates. Her brother. My brother. She'll hate me."
"You'll be there to pick up the pieces. She'll get over it."
Rebekah didn't reply as Stefan spoke up.
"He'll want Athena to confirm that Mikael is really dead. Klaus trusts her more than anyone because she's loyal to him."
"So what? You want me to convince my sister to go along with a plan to kill Nik? I can't lie to her, she'll know I'm lying and I refuse to break her heart," Rebekah told them.
The older sister could not bear to see the look on her little sister's face once she realizes that she betrayed her. Athena would hate for sure. The bond that the two shared was strong, they were both hybrids, the only ones who understood each other. Rebekah couldn't lie to her.
"You're going to break her heart anyway," Stefan pointed out.
"I'm not going to lie to her."
And with that, Rebekah turned on her heel and left the Boarding House.
---
Athena had gotten a call from Stefan while she was in the woods. He had told her that Mikael had come to town to kill Klaus, though the hybrid wasn't in the small town. Stefan had said that Mikael was stabbed and desiccated and that he was going to tell Klaus, but that Klaus would need proof of their father being dead.
So, naturally, the youngest Mikaelson agreed and went back to the Boarding House. However, she was unaware that she had been lied to by her fellow pack mate.
The door was unlocked so Athena let herself in, walking into the living room where she saw the one and only dead body of her father. She gasped in shock, gaining the attention of everyone in the room.
Damon looked like he was fighting back a glare and Elena didn't bother to hide her disgust at her presence. The doppelganger now had several reasons to hate the young girl, so no one could blame her and question as to why she hated Athena.
"Is it really him?" Athena asked, looking at Stefan.
Stefan nodded, still feeling a bit guilty about using the girl. "Yeah, it's him."
The hybrid cautiously walked over and she jumped up when Stefan's phone rang. Stefan then answered it with a calm voice, making sure not to say the wrong thing.
"She's here."
"Let me talk to her," Klaus replied through the phone.
Stefan looked over at Athena and the girl took the phone, putting it to her ear.
"Hi, Nik," she answered with a smile.
Klaus smiled on the other line and Athena could practically hear it. "Hello, Ena. Is it true, is Mikael really dead?"
Athena looked over at the body and let out a breath. "Yes, it's true. Can you come back soon? I'm bored here."
The people listening in tried so hard not to start cheering, knowing that if the young girl requested something, her siblings would give it to her.
"Of course. I'll be there very soon," Klaus told his sister, still smiling.
Athena smiled too and sighed. "Ok. Bye, Nik. Love you."
"I love you too, Athena."
They hung up and the hybrid turned to Stefan. She handed it to him and then turned on her heel, walking up to her room.
Athena closed the door and sat on her bed, putting her head in her hands. How was she so calm while her father's dead body was not even a few feet from her? It wasn't a secret anymore. She was changing. She was embracing the fact that she was a hybrid and that her family was one of the strongest in the entire world.
But at the same time, she didn't want to turn into something she wasn't. She didn't want to become a monster who fed, tortured, and manipulated for amusement.
The hybrid told herself that Mikael would've killed Klaus and that he had to die. And even though he was her father, Mikael wasn't a good one. He chased her siblings for over a thousand years, blaming them for becoming what they are when in reality, he was the reason they became vampires in the first place. Athena couldn't bring herself to look at Mikael the same after that.
She grudgingly got up and went over to the closet and picked out a simple white dress. The girl was never one to really go out with her clothes. She probably would go to a dance in a t-shirt and baggy pants if she could, but Athena knew that Rebekah would be mad if she did.
Athena settled for the white dress and left her hair down, putting on no makeup, and wearing simple black wedges (even though she debated wearing tennis shoes). Rebekah didn't appear to help her which raised confusion in the girl. But she just assumed she left with Matt early.
When she walked down the stairs, no one was there. So Athena just shrugged it off and walked out the door, getting ready to flash there. However, she came to a halt when she saw a car in front of the Boarding House. There was a man waiting and he tipped his head slightly at her presence and then looked at her.
"Miss. Athena, Klaus has asked me to escort you to the homecoming dance at the Lockwood Mansion."
Athena tried so hard not to laugh. "Oh, uh, thanks, I guess."
She got into the car and the hybrid got into the driver's seat. They drove off and Athena smoothed her dress down. Her phone rang and she answered it, seeing that it was Klaus.
"You got me one of your hybrids to drive me to the party?" she questioned, laughing.
Klaus laughed on the other line. "I was going to pick you up but I want you to see my grand entrance."
"Ah, gotcha." She was silent as she tugged on her dress. "I have a bad feeling, Nik."
Her brother went quiet and she could only hear his breathing and the loud talking in the background.
"I know, Ena. So do I. When you get here, I want you to be close to me, ok?"
"Ok. I'll see you when I get there."
They exchanged "I love you" and hung up, leaving Athena in silence again as they hybrid drove off to the Lockwood Mansion.
---
People crowded the backyard and Athena felt a bit overwhelmed. But she took a deep breath and stood on the stairs, overlooking the entire party.
Klaus came onto the stage and Athena saw. She smiled at him and he smiled back.
"Good evening everyone!" Klaus called through the microphone. "I wanna thank you for being here with me to celebrate! It's been a long time coming!"
Athena rolled her eyes playfully at her brother's speech. When she was about to meet up with him, she stopped. A brunette caught her eyes and the hybrid realized that it was Elena. Or better yet, Katherine.
Something was definitely up and her curiosity ate away at her.
"Athena," someone said.
Klaus came toward her and smiled, taking his sister into a hug. He planted a kiss on the top of her head and Athena smiled, hugging him back.
"I missed you Nik," she sighed.
"I missed you as well sister." They pulled away and Athena realized Klaus looked worried. "Have you seen Rebekah around? The Homecoming Queen is still breathing which means she isn't here."
The youngest Mikaelson looked around the yard to see if she saw the blonde. "No, I haven't. I assumed she left with Matt early. She wasn't there when I was getting ready."
Klaus seemed to get more worried. "Something's wrong." He looked around and then looked back at his sister who looked concerned. "Go find one of my hybrids. Stay with them. I'll come back for you later."
Athena nodded and Klaus kissed the top of her head again. He walked into the house, leaving her alone.
The girl let out a sigh and looked around for a hybrid. But before she could, someone came up from behind her and grabbed her.
She started to panic and struggled. When she went to scream, they covered her mouth, dragging her to the front door.
Mikael
Athena tried to scream and she could feel the tears falling down her face. She was scared. And she was going to die.
---
One of the hybrids held her in a death grip while Mikael antagonized Klaus. She tried to fight back but they had injected her with wolfsbane, which weakened her. Athena saw another one of the hybrids push "Elena" into Mikael. He grabbed the doppelganger and held her neck.
"Come out and face me, Niklaus. Or she dies," Mikael warned.
"Go ahead. Kill her," Klaus said, gesturing to him.
He did not know that Mikael had one of the hybrids holding Athena near the doorway. The youngest Mikaelson could not believe that Stefan had lied to her. And she couldn't believe that Mikael was so willing to use her to kill Klaus.
"No, Klaus. He'll do it," Katherine begged in a manner that made her seem just like Elena.
"If she dies, this lot will be last of your abominations," Mikael prodded on.
"I don't need them. I just need to be rid of you," Klaus replied.
But Athena could hear his voice start to crack. It made her angry. Hadn't Mikael ruined his life enough? Is he really that desperate to kill him?
"To what end, Niklaus? So you can live forever, with no one at your side? Nobody cares about you anymore, boy! What do you have other than those whose loyalty you forced? No one. No one," Mikael provoked.
Though she didn't see it, Athena knew her brother started to tear up by how he spoke, "I'm calling your bluff, father. Kill her."
"Come outside and face me, you little coward. And I won't have to."
Athena fought against the hybrid but then her vision blurred and her body fell right back into their arms. She was too weak. Pathetic, she thought.
"My whole life you've underestimated me. If you kill her you lose your leverage. So go ahead. Go on. Kill her. Come on, old man. Kill her. Kill her!!!" Klaus yelled, the tear leaving his eyes.
Mikael laughed. "I know. Which is why I brought her."
The hybrid pushed Athena into Mikael's arms just as he dropped Katherine onto the floor. Klaus went wide-eyed and he grew worried.
"Athena."
The girl looked at him and tried to fight against her father's arms. "Nik."
"Let her go, father. She has nothing to do with this."
Mikael laughed again. "She has everything to do with this. She is a hybrid. An abomination just like you. And if I kill her, I kill you."
He stabbed a dagger into her back and Athena gasped. Before Klaus could go to help her, Damon rushed up and stabbed the White Oak dagger into his stomach. Athena reached into her chest and pulled out the dagger. She got up, but Mikael knocked her back down.
Before Damon could stake Klaus, Stefan rushed in and knocked him off of Klaus.
"What are you doing?!" Damon questioned, struggling against Stefan.
Klaus saw Mikael about to stab Athena again and he took the stake out of his stomach and flashed to Mikael. The Original pushed his father back and then drove the stake through Mikael's heart, making him burst into flames. Klaus went to Athena and held her against him as she cried.
Damon looked shocked and then Stefan got off of him. Klaus brushed Athena's hair back and rubbed her back soothingly.
"Shhh, it's ok Ena. I got you."
He picked her up and Damon shook his head at Stefan with anger.
"What the hell did you do?"
Klaus walked over, carrying his sister in his arms. "He's earned his freedom." Stefan turned to him and Klaus un-compelled him. "Thank you, my friend. You no longer have to do as I say. You're free."
And with that, Klaus carried his sister up the stairs and into one of the guest rooms. The tears had stopped but the girl still looked scared.
"Hey, it's alright. He's gone now," Klaus spoke softly, rubbing her back.
He sat down on the bed and Athena shook her head.
"It was so close. And it's all my fault."
"How is it your fault?"
Athena sniffled and looked up at him. "I'm the one who brought you back to town. I'm the reason why you almost got killed."
Klaus shook his head. "No, you aren't. They used you. You didn't know."
She kept quiet and laid her head on his shoulder. "What do we do now?"
"Now, we reunite our family." He flashed out of the room and reappeared with a blood bag. "Drink. You'll need your strength."
Athena took it and drank it quickly before putting it on the bedside table.
"They did something to Rebekah, I know it. She wouldn't just not show up to the dance," Athena pointed out.
Klaus nodded in agreement. "I know. Get some rest. We'll be off to retrieve the coffins in the morning."
She nodded and smiled at him before laying back down. "Goodnight, Nik."
He bent over and kissed her on the top of the head. "Goodnight, Athena."
---
The next morning, Athena got up and got ready for the day. She smiled as she thought of seeing her family again after over thousand years. All together.
Once again
She bounded down the stairs and went outside where Klaus was waiting for her, sitting in the car. She got inside and smiled at him.
"I'm so excited."
Klaus smiled back. "I am as well. And you being there will be a surprise."
He started the car and Athena was practically bouncing up and down in her seat from excitement.
"What do you think will happen?" she asked. "When they see me again? What if I let them down."
Her nerves were gnawing at her and so her insecurities took shape. What if her siblings thought of her as an abomination? Just like Mikael had said. But Klaus knew this was what she was thinking. Because since Athena was a hybrid, that meant that she was part werewolf. Thus meaning that Mikael wasn't her birth father.
"Don't let what he said bring you down. Mikael is the abomination. Not you," Klaus told her.
They reached where the truck was and they got out. Athena started to tug on her shirt from the nerves. This was it. This was the moment her family would be together again.
Klaus got out his phone and tried to call Rebekah.
"Rebekah, where are you? Pick up the phone, darling. Daddy is dead. It's time for a family reunion." But then Athena heard the ring of his phone and Klaus answered it. "Stefan! Miss me already?"
Athena rolled her eyes at his cockiness and listened in on the conversation.
"I'm just calling to thank you for my freedom," Stefan replied.
Klaus smirked. "Oh, I like to believe I'm a man of my word, more or less."
"Thing is, it came at too high of a price. You took everything from me, Klaus."
She almost stopped when she heard Stefan say that. But then she saw the truck as she and Klaus neared it. Something was up.
"Let bygones be bygones, trust me. Resentment get's old," Klaus told Stefan.
They reached the truck and Athena felt her heart start to pound. Something was definitely wrong.
"You know what never get's old?" Stefan asked Klaus. "Revenge."
Klaus opened up the truck and the two stood in shock as they realized all of the caskets were gone.
"No," Athena denied, shaking her head. "No!"
"What's the matter?" Stefan taunted through the phone. "Missing something?"
Athena snatched the phone from Klaus and spoke to Stefan.
"I promise you, Stefan. My brother is going to be the least of your worries. Did you know my bite is deathly? I wonder what would happen if someone you loved were to get bitten? Maybe Damon." Stefan was quiet on the other end. Athena couldn't care, she wouldn't give him the pleasure. "You, Stefan Salvatore, are hereby removed from my pack."
Stefan stood shock from where he was in a room with the caskets. He felt the breath leave his lungs when she said that. It was as if he lost a part of himself.
"Goodbye, Stefan," Athena said. Then she hung up the phone and turned to Klaus who was still in shock but was now looking surprised. "I want him to pay, Nik. I want them all to pay."
Klaus took a step toward her and put his hands on her shoulders. "And they will. We will make them pay for what they've done."
Stefan had no idea what he had just done. Because he had angered the youngest Mikaelson.
And that alone had already dug his grave to rock bottom.

That last bit has me so pumped! Get ready for a pretty pissed off Athena!
What do you think about Stefan being removed from Athena's pack?
Do you think that Athena will let him back in?
What kind of trouble do you think Athena is going to cause?
