The Legend That Became Reality
━━━━━━━━
Flashback
THE WHOLE FOREST WAS DEATHLY QUIET. The trees stood still, no wind blowing through them, the animals were scurrying around, due to them not being awake, not even the sound of his shoes hitting the ground. He had acquired quiet steps in the few years he had been on the Other Side, though it feeling like he had been there for centuries. But he had finally found another person, it being a girl the age of 13.
Thomas knew that a girl that young wouldn't handle being dead so easily. At least, he thought she was dead. There was no telling really. Athena was quiet, never really talking much. But he always tried to talk to her, trying to get her to smile, to no avail. However, that didn't mean he ever gave up.
A sniffle broke his thoughts and he instantly knew who it was, for he been looking for her for a while.
The red-headed boy walked over to a tree nearby and peered around to see Athena, her body pushed against the tree, knees to her chest, head down, as she sobbed. He smiled sadly and sat next to her, bringing the girl to his chest.
"Hey, shh. It's alright," he hushed, rubbing her back to comfort her.
"I miss them so much," she sobbed.
"I know you do. But hey, look at me." Athena's body started to shake for her crying and she looked up at him. "I'm here ok? I'm going to help you get through this. We are going to get through this together. Ok?" She nodded and sniffled. "Now come here."
Thomas wrapped his arms around the girl that was so much smaller than he was and held her tight.
And neither of them knew that years ahead, the two of them would mean so much to each other.
---
Present
To say she felt uncomfortable was an understatement. She hadn't worn a dress for over a thousand years and this one wasn't as loose as her old dresses. Athena couldn't lie though, it was beautiful, just the fact that it made her feel like she was suffocating, didn't appeal.
Rebekah finished trying on her dress and spoke up from the changing room.
"There has to be more to this dress," she insisted.
"There's not," Klaus told her, sipping his glass of champagne.
She walked out of the fitting room in a short black dress. Stefan looked up at her as she spoke. "So women in the 21st-century dress like prostitutes, then. You know, I got dirty looks for wearing trousers."
Klaus smirked. "You wore trousers so women today could wear nothing."
"And what is this music? It sounds like a cable car accident."
"It's dance music," Stefan replied.
"People dance to this?" she questioned.
"Hmm."
Klaus rolled his eyes in boredom. "Are we done?"
"And why are you so grumpy?" Rebekah asked.
"I needed one thing from you for my witch to find out why my hybrids are dying, one thing. Your necklace. And you lost it."
"I didn't lose it. It's just been missing for 90 years." She looked over at Stefan. "So what do you think?"
"I like it," he lied. Rebekah gave him a look. "What? I said I like it."
"I can always tell when you're lying, Stefan." She turned around and realized her little sister was not yet out of the changing room. "Ena dear, are you having trouble getting it on?"
Athena sighed from in the changing room and the three looked over at it. "I have it on it's just... it's so tight and I don't feel comfortable wearing it."
"You just have to get used to it," Klaus called to her. "Come on out, we want to see it."
Athena sighed again and then stepped out, wearing the floral dress. She walked over and then tugged down the dress, though it went to her knees. Rebekah smiled and clapped, reminding the younger hybrid of Caroline. Klaus smiled and Stefan did as well.
"It looks so cute on you," Rebekah said, going over and stopping her sister from tugging down the dress. "Now stop that. You're going to stretch it out. How do you like it besides the fact you feel subconscious wearing it?"
Athena knew she couldn't lie. "I like it. But I guess Nik's right, I'll just have to get used to it." She looked at Rebekah's dress and raised an eyebrow. "Um... Rebekah?"
"What?"
"I'm not going to lie but, that dress doesn't look good on you."
Rebekah spun to Stefan and glared. "See, at least my sister is honest with me." She turned back to Athena with a smile. "Thank you, Ena."
She went back into the changing room and Klaus looked at Stefan.
"Nice one. Good work," he commented.
"You're the one that pulled the dagger out of her," Stefan replied.
"I heard that," Rebekah called out.
Athena laughed slightly and Stefan put his glass down, announcing that he was going outside to get some fresh air. He got up and left and Athena went to sit where he sat.
Outside, Stefan followed Katherine who had motioned him to follow.
"What the hell are you doing here?" Stefan asked when he reached her.
They both stood on the curb and Katherine turned to him. "You two look chummy. Klaus your new bestie?"
"You know, if he finds out you're in Chicago, you're dead."
"Happy to know that you still care. So tell me if I'm wrong...Rebekah's necklace that Klaus is looking for...That's the necklace that you gave to Elena."
"Goodbye, Katherine."
He went to walk away but put a hand on his chest to stop him. "Hey, hey. Wait. You're up to something, tell me..."
"They don't know where the necklace is. I just have to keep them from figuring it out. I have it all under control."
"Please, tell me you have a better plan than that." Stefan didn't answer and she realized she was right. "You do. Come on, Stefan. You're not the diabolical type. Whatever you're planning, it's not going to work."
"Well, if the most diabolical woman I know can't seem to figure it out, then I must be doing something right."
"Uh-huh. I forgot. You're bad now. Don't get too cocky. Klaus is smarter than you. He's smarter than everyone." Stefan started to walk away and Katherine turned to him, calling out. He stopped and turned to her as she spoke. "You and I both know that with two of Athena's siblings alive, she'll become like them. And you may be bad now, but you still care about her. Don't let her become like them."
But Stefan didn't respond as he turned and walked away. Katherine didn't hide that she cared about the youngest Mikaelson. Because in the end, Athena was the only one she truly adored.
---
The three Mikaelsons had left the store and went back to Gloria's. The witch had closed the bar so she could do the spell to find the pendant.
Gloria went over to one of the tables and looked at Athena. "I have to ask, do you know anything about what you are?"
Rebekah looked confused as she glared slightly at Gloria. "Are you insulting my baby sister?"
Gloria looked at her and then at Klaus. "So you didn't tell her?"
Klaus exchanged a look with Athena who was avoided their looks.
"Rebekah, we need to have a little chat."
The blonde followed him and Athena sat down at the table in front of Gloria. She took a deep breath and tugged her dress down before looking at the witch.
"Honestly, I have no idea what I am."
"But you do know that you're a hybrid."
"A Nyx, whatever that means." She rubbed her hands on her legs, a sign of nerves. Athena honestly was scared of what she was. A hybrid, just like Klaus. But she was different. A Nyx. And she was supposedly the Queen of wolfs. So then that brought up the question as to who the King was.
"There is a legend passed down through generations of werewolf bloodline, talking about the Nyxs. The story goes that long ago when werewolves were first made, fate chose two wolfs. A male and a female. These two would be the voice for all the lycan community, they would be the face of the wolfs. But of course, being passed down through generations, the story became a legend, no one believed it anymore. However, the wolfs still held on to the hope that the Nyxs were out there somewhere. And you are a walking proof that the legend is true."
Athena raised an eyebrow. "And so now people know that the legend is true?"
"Only some, word spreads but it will take a while before it reaches wolfs from all over the world that their Queen has risen."
She nodded. "Where does the name come from? Nyx I mean."
"Well there is the French name of course which you know, but Nyx is the most common name. It comes from the goddess of night with the same name. Werewolves are beholden to the full moon, which shines in the night, hence, the name Nyx." Athena rubbed her forehead and laughed slightly. "I know it is a lot to take in, but you need to know these things."
"I know. Is there more?"
Gloria nodded with a smile. "You might not want to hear it but I'm gonna tell you anyway. The Nyxs transformation into a wolf isn't as painful for a normal wolf, and they do have the strength, speed and all that jazz of a vampire, but their bite is what's interesting."
Athena leaned forward. "Their bite?"
"The Nyxs bite is even more deathly than Klaus's is. It can kill a witch, warlock, or even a human." Athena avoided her eyes as she continued. "Anyway, the Nyxs are immortal but there is a price. If one of them were to die, the other would start to age, mourning the loss of their love, until they too die."
"But couldn't they just... you know..." Athena trailed off.
Gloria nodded. "Yes. I honestly think the one living would, the Nyxs can't stand being away from each other for long as it is. Imagine what losing the other would feel like."
Athena looked back up at her. "So if I'm the female, who's the male?"
Gloria smiled. "Well, he hasn't been found yet. The Nyx part of him will only be activated if he meets you."
But Gloria didn't know, and Athena didn't remember, but the male Nyx already exist, and the Nyx part of him was activated. And he was still on the Other Side.
---
Klaus had explained to Rebekah about how Athena was a hybrid, a Nyx, a legend that no one thought was true. Rebekah had listened the entire time, shocked by the news. She wasn't mad or angry, no. It didn't change how she felt about her little sister, it didn't change how much she loved her.
The two had walked back out where Gloria and just started on the spell to find the necklace. Rebekah flashed over and hugged her sister who jumped in surprise but hugged back.
"What's the hug for?" Athena questioned with a slight laugh.
"It doesn't change anything. I still love you and you will always be my sister."
Athena smiled and the two pulled away. Stefan walked in and saw the three, watching as Gloria tried to find the necklace.
"You left us," Rebekah said.
"Yeah, sorry. Retail therapy was making my head explode," Stefan replied.
Klaus scoffed. "Tell me about it."
Stefan looked at Gloria with a raised eyebrow. "What's she doing?"
"She's failing."
Athena gave her older brother a look before looking back at Gloria. "She's looking for the necklace."
"It's hard to find something when you don't have anything to go on," Gloria added.
"So use me. I only wore it for a thousand years," Rebekah said, getting up and going over to Gloria.
"See? Now this one offers a solution." Rebekah sat in front of Gloria. "All right, give me your hand, sweetheart." Rebekah did so and no one noticed the worried expression on Stefan's face. It was quiet and Athena and Klaus got up and went over to stand next to Stefan as Gloria started the spell again. "I can sense something." Stefan started to look more worried. "Anta Cotis Syrum, Anta Cotis Syrum..." Gloria gasped and dropped Rebekah's hands, looking up at Klaus. "I found it."
"So where is it?" Rebekah demanded.
"It doesn't work like that, doll. I get images. There's a girl with her friends-"
"Yes, a dead girl with dead friends, if I don't get my necklace back."
Athena and Klaus exchanged a look, knowing Rebekah was being serious. She had witnessed Rebekah's anger a few times before, and it was never pretty. And she assumed over the years, Rebekah's anger didn't change.
"Well, I'll have to dive back in to get the details," Gloria told her.
"So dive," Klaus said.
"I need more time." He walked over and leaned on the table in front of Gloria with a glare. "And space. You're harshing my ju-ju."
"We can wait."
"I'm sure you can. But that's not what I asked."
Athena saw the situation going nowhere so she spoke up. "Nik, why don't we come back later? I'm hungry."
Klaus looked over at her and nodded, standing back up straight. He looked back at Gloria. "Ok. I don't need my baby sister to starve. We'll be back."
So then the four vampires left, leaving Gloria to continue working on the spell.
---
They had gone back to the warehouse and Klaus sat on the couch, drinking from a human girl while Stefan sat in a chair, drinking from his human, Rebekah sat on one of the crates, and Athena sat on another nearby, drinking from her human by the wrist.
Normally, the younger hybrid would have Klaus put the blood in a glass so she could drink it (he didn't want her drinking from animals anymore) because he knew she felt uncomfortable drinking from the vein. Though now, Athena drank from the wrist, not the neck, still trying to ease herself into vampire tendencies. And Klaus was surprised, though he didn't want to say anything. Rebekah however, felt a shiver run up her spine as she watched her little, baby sister drink from a human.
Sure, she didn't mind drinking from humans. But watching Athena drink from a human was odd, almost sad. Her sister was always an innocent soul, never one for violence. And yet Athena was a vampire a hybrid at that. So her sister had no choice, but to drink blood for the rest of her eternal life.
Klaus dropped the girl's body to the ground and looked over at Rebekah as she spoke, "My girl's dead. I'm bored."
The Hybrid didn't pay her any mind and looked over at Athena, saying, "You weren't kidding about being hungry."
Athena looked up at Rebekah saw the girl's violet eyes. The dark veins under her eyes only made the violet pop out more, giving her a serene, innocent look, though she wasn't.
"Yeah, it's just been a really long day for me."
"Oh I know, we're both related to her," Klaus teased, motioning his head over to Rebekah.
Athena couldn't help but laugh and Rebekah swung her legs over the crate.
"You're being mean," Rebekah accused, looking at Klaus. She looked at her sister who had dropped the body and was wiping off her mouth. "And why are you being mean? You've always loved me."
Klaus smirked. "It's been a thousand years, Rebekah. Give our little sister a moment to realize that you are really here."
"That doesn't explain why you're being mean."
"Because, my dear sister, I feel pity for anyone who doesn't enjoy your company."
"Will you stop making me out to be a brat? I am not a brat!"
"A thousand years of life experience says otherwise."
Athena laughed at their bickering and Stefan spoke up. "Well, you're no picnic, either. I mean, I've only spent one summer with you and I feel like I want to blow my head off."
Rebekah laughed with Athena, smiling wide.
"Fantastic," she said. Stefan dropped the body to the ground and got up, announcing that he was leaving. "Where's he going?"
"To write a name on a wall. It's a long story," Klaus told her. He noticed that the human Athena had fed on, didn't have a heartbeat. "Athena."
Athena looked over at him. "Hmm?"
"Did you finish her?"
The girl looked down at her lap embarrassed. "Yeah..." Rebekah looked at Klaus and slapped him upside the head, giving him a look. "I can't just save every person I feed on. I can't keep trying to save everyone."
"Ena..." Rebekah trailed off, looking sad. "Don't try and change yourself, Athena. Just because we are the oldest vampires in the world, doesn't mean you have to change."
Athena shook her head. "That's exactly what it means."
Neither of them responded and they were all left in silence.
---
Instead of going to the old apartment like he said he was, Stefan went back to Gloria's to see the witch walking around, picking up glasses.
"There you are," she said.
"Thought you were resting," he replied.
"Well, now we both have a secret."
"What did you see?"
"It's what I heard that's interesting. You know, the girls with the necklace, they were talking about you."
"Yet you didn't tell Klaus. Why?"
"'Cause I wouldn't help that hybrid half-breed with anything. The necklace is a talisman from the original witch herself. I want it and I want the Nyx girl."
"Well, I'm sorry. I can't help you. Now, why would you want Athena?"
Gloria set one of the alcohol bottles on the counter behind her and turned to him. "Because she's the female Nyx. Her venom is even deadlier than Klaus's. It could mean trouble for everyone, including you. I think it is best if I have her to keep her in check."
"In check? What exactly do you plan to do with her?" He saw Gloria's look. "So you plan on holding Athena Mikaelson hostage until you what? Find a way to kill her?"
"Once I find a way to kill her, she'll no longer a problem."
"Well, I'm not helping you. Let's see what Klaus is going to do when he finds out what you have planned for his sister."
"Don't be difficult. You know, I'd hate to have to tell Klaus what a liar his sidekick is."
He flashed over to her but she looked at him, making him grab his head in pain, falling to the floor.
"Guess I've got to get you to do what I want the hard way, huh?"
---
After Gloria had found out what Stefan was hiding and was nearly about to get him to kidnap Athena, Katherine had rushed in a killed her.
"I've been thinking about your diabolical plan," Katherine spoke up.
"Oh. Do tell," he said.
"Well, you must know that Klaus is too paranoid to ever fully trust you. But Rebekah, she loves you like it was yesterday. She's the easier mark. But you can't just pretend to care, because Klaus will know better, so you do the opposite. You bond with him; make her feel left out. That will only make her want you more. And then, you can help Athena out, making her more comfortable being a vampire, and that will get Klaus and Rebekah to trust you a little."
He pointed at her. "Oh! So you mean, I'm, uh, I'm taking a page out of the Katherine Pierce playbook."
"The only question is why Stefan? I mean, I get it, you want to keep Klaus away from Mystic Falls and to keep Athena safe, but...What else do you expect to get from it?"
Stefan smirked and chuckled. "You know what's funny? You keep talking to me like I actually trust you enough to tell you anything."
"Oh, come on, Stefan, we're beyond that. I saved you from Hilda the high voodoo priestess."
He nodded. "Okay. I knew Klaus and Rebekah, back in the twenties. They were running from someone. Someone who scared them."
"A Hunter," Katherine realized. "I heard stories about him centuries ago."
"Don't you want to know why an Original vampire who can't be killed is afraid of a Vampire Hunter?"
"If you're planning on making a move against Klaus...I want in."
"That's good. It's good to want things, Katherine."
"Stefan..."
He bent down and picked up Gloria's body, putting the witch on his shoulder. "Katherine. I'm in this alone. If you're looking for a diabolical partner in crime, I suggest you look elsewhere."
And then he left.
---
Rebekah had stayed at the warehouse while Klaus and Athena went to Gloria's to check up on her, to see if she made any progress. The two walked in silence and Klaus kept looking over at her, thinking about what she had said earlier about trying to change.
"You know, Rebekah's right. I know you feel like you can't do anything and that you need to change but, you don't Athena. The rest of our family, we are monsters, you are the only pure thing that is left of our family."
"I can't keep letting everyone safe me. I can't keep depending on everyone else to do things for me. I need to be able to step up and do things myself. Starting with drinking straight from the vein."
Klaus stopped and stood in front of her, making her stop. "Is that really what you want? To be monsters just like us?"
"You aren't monsters. Our family isn't made of monsters. We're just broken." Athena sighed and looked to the side before looking back at Klaus. "I get that you and Rebekah don't want me to change myself, but I want to be strong. I want to be able to fight for our family. Please don't try and change my decision. Please, Nik."
Klaus looked conflicted. But he saw the look on her face. She really did want this. He realized that. And he knew that it would be wrong of him to change that.
"Ok." He nodded. "Ok. But there is a line that I never want you to cross. And if you cross it, I will pull you back."
Athena nodded, smiling at him in gratitude. "Thank you."
Klaus smiled back and grabbed her hand as they walked back to Gloria's. Once they got inside, it was quiet and the two got a bad feeling. They exchanged glances and Athena spoke up, "She's gone."
---
"Gloria's gone," Klaus announced when they entered the warehouse. "She's cleared out. We need to find a new witch immediately."
Rebekah and Stefan stood near each other and Rebekah had a look on her face that both of her siblings knew well.
"What's going on?" Athena questioned.
Rebekah shook her head, still looking at Stefan. "Something's wrong." She looked at her siblings. "He was asking about Mikael. He's not with us, Nik. I can sense it."
Athena felt her breath hitch in her throat. Klaus had told her that their father had been hunting them for centuries, trying to kill them. But he had been desiccated, locked away where no one could find him.
Stefan looked at them with a worried expression. "She's wrong. Klaus-" But Klaus had already flashed over and snapped his neck.
Athena gasped and covered her mouth with her hand. The three all exchanged glances.
"He can't know. You told me no one knew!" Athena yelled in worry, looking at Klaus.
She was scared. Ever since Mikael had accidentally hit her in the woods that day, Athena had never looked at her father the same. He was beating her brother. And it wasn't right.
"That's because no one did," Klaus told her.
Athena shook her head and Rebekah flashed over to her, holding her little sister to her chest as the girl shook in fear.
They knew that nothing good would come out of this. But this was only the beginning.

I just wanted to point out that I'm not discriminating any gender or anything you guys identify as. I just put that there is a female and a male Nyx because I'm young and I don't feel exactly comfortable writing the same gender, or any relationship that isn't a straight one. I apologize if you think I'm being rude, I just don't feel comfortable.
Also, because Athena doesn't remember Thomas, she doesn't feel the emptiness of him being "gone".
