Prologue

Quiet music plays from a radio set up on the edge of the receptionist desk of the Mystic Falls Sheriff's office where Rosette Forbes is sat. Her day job. Working the desk keeps her out of trouble according to her mother. Barely. But sure. It does. Her desk at the Sheriff's office is shared with only one other person so it is half and half personalised. One half has Nora's china cow figurines and the other half has Rose's own items. A white rabbit figurine, a red crystal rose, and a photo of her and Caroline from a few years back, and some decorative little sticky pom-pom things with googly eyes. She taps her nails on the side of her coffee mug as she scrolls through a news feed on her phone. It's been a rather slow day regarding crime in Mystic Falls. Every single day is slow in terms of crime in this town. Everything about Mystic Falls is slow. She sighs, sets her phone and her mug down onto the top of the desk to go back to typing at her computer, writing up the report on her desk. She transfers files when she has a moment free, which in a small town, is a lot of moments. She managed to talk her mother into making digital copies of their old files, and because it was her idea, she is the one in charge of doing it. She doesn't mind doing it as it keeps her busy through the monotony of a small town. Since she turned 18, she's struggled with the desire to leave Mystic Falls. Her mother got her this job to tie her to the place, she meant well, but it is hardly exciting.

"An animal attack" Rose looks up and across at the conversation that's piqued her interest. Her mother, Sheriff Elizabeth Forbes, walks alongside her deputy, heading towards her office at the back of the building. Elizabeth glances at Rose who raises an eyebrow in question. Elizabeth gives her a look, understanding what that raised eyebrow from her daughter is asking, but here is not the place to talk about it or for Rose to get distracted. She's working, she shouldn't be thinking about vampires right now. It doesn't really matter but Elizabeth is just worried about her getting involved in this. Rose had only found out about vampires by accident. She had been looking for a new book to read after she had run out of new ones in her own collection. She'd been snooping basically and found a leather-bound journal from the 1860s, after devouring the entries in the journal she'd turned to Elizabeth to find out if it was fact or fiction. It was then that Elizabeth divulged the truth of the matter, bringing Rose in on the truth of the world. She had no choice. Rose is determined and tenacious and if she had said no, then Rose would have been insufferable to live with. Elizabeth honestly hadn't expected Rose's response to finding out that the monsters of stories are real. She's obsessed with myths and legends and stories. And any time it comes up, Rose's expression just shifts into barely contained excitement and interest. She should have known that Rose would be this way, considering the fascination she had with fairy tales growing up. This is just a more mature continuation of that. A worrisome continuation. Because vampires are a real threat. And Elizabeth is worried that Rose might go looking for them to sate her curiosity. Elizabeth diverts from the deputy to approach her daughter. Rose pushes her chair away from the desk and spins to look at her mother, leaning back in her seat, one leg crossed over the other.

"Animal attack?" Rose asks her, Elizabeth hums and glances at her. It is very clear that she really is excited about seeing a vampire. Perhaps if she had any sort of self-preservation instinct she wouldn't be. But the idea of something from a storybook being real. The idea that if vampires are real, what else could be? That gets her excited. "Or..animal attack?" Rose pushes a little.

"We'll talk about it later" Elizabeth counters. Rose pulls a disappointed face but accepts the brush off, for now. She is not about to let this go. Rose hums a little and scoots her chair back to the reception desk as the phone starts to ring.

"Mystic Falls Sheriff's Department" She answers, tucking the phone between her ear and shoulder as she brings up the report document on her computer. "How may I assist you today?"
