Chapter One
Rose has lunch with her mother every day, it's more than Caroline gets but Rose makes up for that by always having dinner with her sister. It's not the same but it is better than leaving Caroline to have dinner alone. Especially as she already feels rather abandoned by Elizabeth for how little time she spends with her family outside of work.
"It is not confirmed yet" Elizabeth scolds as she sets a boxed salad in front of Rose. Rose is still pushing the animal attack news because she is desperate for it to be something more than just an animal. She is looking for something more to life. "I'm still waiting on the autopsy report to come through...." Rose stares at her, waiting for more. "I really wish you weren't so excited" Elizabeth points out, Rose shrugs a little.
"You've known about them for a long time," Rose counters, opening up her salad. "I haven't....and it's exciting to find out that something out of a book is real....it would be like finding out Loch Ness is real" She leans back in her seat, eyes glancing out the window and a smile on her lips. "Perhaps he is," Rose muses.
"I would just prefer it if it wasn't something so dangerous that got you like this" Elizabeth counters. "I wanted to protect you both from it" She shakes her head, opening up her own lunch. "If you hadn't found that journal..." She glances at Rose who tilts her head. Rose knows that her mother never wanted her or Caroline involved in that part of the world. She wanted to protect them from those horrors. Rose would never have been told if she hadn't found that journal. But Elizabeth doesn't understand how much it meant to Rose, learning about vampires. She can't understand because Rose has kept certain aspects of herself hidden from her. With the way they talk about vampires, it is no wonder that she wouldn't reveal the fact that she has some form of magical power or whatever it is that is going on with her. Learning about vampires had been the first moment since she turned 21 that she felt like there might be an explanation as to what is going on with her. She turned 21 and something woke in her. She kept it to herself. Hid it. Researched something that was impossible and came up with no answers. And then she finds out about vampires. Something impossible. And everything else, all the impossible things, suddenly became a very real possibility. She realised that there could be answers out there somewhere. 4 years of no answers and now she has a shot at finding them. It is not just that she is excited about there being vampires, but that she is excited about learning more. Learning about everything that is out there and hidden. But she probably isn't going to find those answers in Mystic Falls. It's the most boring town ever to exist.
"But I did," Rose points out, pointing her fork at her mother with a smile on her face. Elizabeth sighs a little and shakes her head. She would take Rose having boy issues over her excitement over vampires. But Rose has never really been into boy drama though. Books on magic and monsters were more interesting to her. She just wasn't interested in forging connections with people outside of her family. Well, not that Elizabeth has noticed anyway. Rose has actually had a few relationships since high school, but they were always mistakes and she always pushed them away from her. They were all bad for her. Men with drinking problems, men with theft issues, men with jealousy issues, men with drug problems, men with anger issues, men with an actual criminal record. She kept them all away from her family. After her high school boyfriend turned out to be more interested in Caroline, who was 13 at the time. After that, she decided that she would only introduce them to her family if she was absolutely sure of the guy. She never has been. None of them last more than six months. She is just really bad at picking men. She even tried online dating but that was just a pool of shit. So she gave up. She has her books and right now, that is all she needs right now. She is not looking for something. Not whilst she doesn't understand herself.
"So..?" Rose asks, leaning forward. "Autopsy aside, do you think it's a vampire?" Elizabeth gives her a look as she opens her own lunch.
"Can we just eat lunch without having to talk about this stuff?" She counters. Rose lets out a disappointed breath but does lean back in her seat to forget it. For now. She can always bug Elizabeth about it later. It's not like a one time meeting or anything. This is her mother. She can talk about this as much as she wants.
"Fine" Rose mumbles and stabs at her salad with her fork.
"How was Caroline this morning?" Elizabeth swerves the conversation towards family and Caroline whom Elizabeth abandoned at breakfast for this new town death.
"She was Caroline," Rose answers. "She shrugged and waved it off but I can tell it bothered her" Rose hums a little and lets out a breath. "You barely get to spend any time with her as it is" Elizabeth rightfully looks scolded, because she knows. She knows that she doesn't get to spend nearly enough time with her daughters, which is why she liked the idea of Rose working at the station with her. But she has a responsibility to this town, to keeping it and its residents safe. Rose seems to understand that better than Caroline, but Rose had Bill to lean on at the time. Caroline hasn't. "I understand," Rose assures her mother. "More now that I know about the vampires, but Caroline thinks you just don't want to spend time with her" Rose shrugs a little. "Try a few more dinners...." Rose offers, despite the fact that she knows that won't be enough. But it might be a start. Just a little something to get the ball rolling.
