Ruth Dakin had a bit of an anger issue. That was what the Professor called it whenever they had to replace her burned bedsheets after she found herself too frustrated at the Tuesday night homework she had been given, or when she woke up from a too bad dream and wasn't able to calm herself down in time. She had trouble controlling her emotions, something the Professor and Hank McCoy tried their hardest to keep in check, because they very well knew the dangers of unchecked rage.

Having nowhere else to go, she found herself staying at the mansion over the summer, along with the other few students that were stranded, everyone else having had gone home or had been taken out of school after the mansion had initially exploded, their parents not trusting them to stay in a place where danger lurked around every corner; it was also why enrollment rates were so low, which was a fair problem to the head of the school.

But the summer was not stagnant for Ruth and the rest of her classmates, as news of Warren Worthington III—one of Magneto's former associates during their most recent battle, believed to have been left for dead—rose to the surface, spurring on a whirlwind of events as everyone scrambled to decide whether or not they wanted to take on the responsibility and save the boy.

As she tried to keep up with the current events, swept up in the plans and preparations for no reason other than proximity, Ruth found herself also being forced to tackle her problems straight-on, facing the ghosts that she worked so hard to bury, the skeletons in her closet finding their way out, but for all the past was coming back to haunt her, a boy with a dry wit and red-tinted glasses was waiting with open arms to help her move on towards the future.

AUTHOR'S NOTE

Welcome back to Dexter, it's not the same story you may or may not know. I know that a lot of the people who read the original version of Dexter like it a lot, and I greatly appreciate that and I find it incredibly flattering because, in my personal opinion, the original Dexter really isn't that good. It's not the worst thing on the internet, and it's not a bad concept, but the execution could have been so much better. Granted, at the time of me writing it three years ago, my abilities were not as developed as they are now, but even then the story wasn't my best, and while you might like the original more (I hope you don't by the end of this, because I would feel awful about myself) I personally do not like the original at all, and I would like the chance to rewrite it because I feel like it could be so much better, something I actually want to tell people to go read, so whether or not you like my decision to do this, Dexter still staying up without any corrections keeps me up at night and I need to do this or else I'll never find peace.

So if you've read the original Dexter, I ask you to read this one, because it will be very different, but I also ask you to not state any spoilers in the comments because some things might stay the same and it would be unfair to any people who have yet to read the original and instead will just be reading this one. I will be changing many aspects, including Ruth's codename (so rest easy, all those who tried to kill me and still try to) but some aspects will stay the same, such as some of the pairings that I had within the story and Alex Summers being alive and well, because while I don't do many changes, I do want to make this one. So if you've read Dexter before, this won't be the same story, but it's still recognizable.

There will also be some spoilers for Dark Phoenix, though, as it does take place nine years later (or rather eight years, in terms of this story, as this takes place in 1984), there isn't much to be changed, there will just be small references to one aspect of that movie that you might not want to be spoiled about, but it is minute and not at all relevant at this particular time.

Also! Not to put too fine a point on it, but! Ruth's name is Ruth Dakin. Ruth Dakin Bailey is a reference to the movie It's a Wonderful Life, please do not refer to her as Ruth Dakin Bailey, that's not her name. Thank you.
