25 - IT'S OVER
KAELYN RAN BACK INSIDE solely to grab Tony Stark's suit for her that she left in her locker for this exact purpose. Adrenaline was pumping through her veins as she slipped off her heels in order to give her some mobility back and changed into her suit as quickly as possible. She and Peter had never truly teamed up like this before. Unfortunately, she wished it was under better circumstances, but she was happy for this little bit of unity they were experiencing.
They ran as fast as they could out of the school and Peter ran right in front of a nice car being driven by none other than Flash Thompson. Although Peter was less intimidating in his pajamas and a falsified tough guy voice, the teenager seemed scared enough.
"Flash, I need your car and your phone," Peter demanded, in an attempt to disguise his voice.
Kaelyn held back a laugh as she activated her suit's voice coder, "He's not asking. Car, phone, now."
Despite getting out of the car, Flash still attempted to dissuade Peter from taking the car, "Uh, sir, technically this is my dad's car, so I can't, um..."
Peter attempted to get into the drivers' seat, but the girl pushed him out of the way and sat down as they both ignored Flash's arguing. She looked over at him and glared at him through the suit as Peter begrudgingly sat down in the passenger seat, "Which one of us has our license? I drive, you call Ned. Got it?"
The boy nodded and dialed Ned's number on Flash's phone, "Hello, Ned? Hey, hey, hey, hey, can you hear me? Ned, I need you to track my phone for me."
"Where did you leave your phone, Peter?" Kaelyn asked as she drove, "Where am I going anyway?"
"Toomes's car, duh," Peter shrugged, "Jackson Avenue. Ned, you're on speakerphone."
"Hey, Ned, we stole Flash's car and this thing likes to go fast," Kaelyn greeted while trying to keep her eyes on the road and get to Jackson Avenue as quickly as possible, "Much different than my fucking Toyota Corolla."
"You guys stole Flash's car? That's awesome!" Ned exclaimed through the phone.
Peter cut off his excitement, asking, "Hey, have you gotten through to Happy yet?"
"Yeah, I'm working on it. I just gotta backdoor the phone system."
After a few moments, Ned went quiet, presumably on the phone with Happy. Well, hopefully, he got through to him. After a minute or two, Ned was back. "Where's my phone now?" Peter asked and Kaelyn was grateful she was actually getting some directions hopefully soon because she was driving far too fast for someone who had no idea where she was going.
"Um, he stopped in an old industrial park in Brooklyn," Ned instructed, sounding confused.
"What? That makes no sense I thought he was going out of town!" Peter exclaimed.
Kaelyn sighed, exclaiming sarcastically, "All right, a random industrial park in Brooklyn thank you for the directions, Ned!" Although this was probably the coolest thing she had ever done, there wasn't much room to enjoy with everything she was feeling flooding her emotions at every given moment. She was frustrated, mostly, with her life, with Peter, with everything.
"Sorry, Kae. That's weird, Peter. Also, I reached Happy. Don't think he likes you, by the way. It sounded like he was catching a flight. He said something about taking off in nine minutes," Ned explained, sounding confused. However, Peter seemed to know exactly what this meant.
"What?" Peter asked, as though he were just making sure.
Ned offered up some more explanation, "He was surrounded by a bunch of boxes."
This is when everything seemed to truly click together in Peter's mind. Exclaiming, "Boxes? It's moving day. It's moving day! It's moving day! He's gonna rob that plane! Kae, we gotta stop him!"
They broke free from the city as Kaelyn began speeding down an empty, dark road with no one else driving down it. She turned on her brights just so she could see 100 feet in front of her. The urgency was still there, but she was anxious to reach their destination.
After a while, Ned gave them more instructions, "Okay, you're getting close. Slow down, it's going to be on your right."
"What?"
"Turn right!" the boy on the phone exclaimed. Naturally, Kaelyn saw her first entryway on the right and followed instructions considering Ned was the one with the map. She stopped the car as quickly as possible, which led to them hitting a streetlight which almost toppled to the ground with the impact. "Are you guys okay?"
"Yeah. Just keep trying to get through to Happy."
"It's been an honor, Spider-Man. And Spider-Kae. I don't know what your superhero name is, but I feel like Spider-Kae is kinda cute," Ned began to ramble before she cut him off.
"We can decide on Superhero names later, okay? Bye Ned, thank you for all the help," she spoke briefly as she took the phone out of Peter's hands and hung it up. Together, Peter and Kaelyn decided to go in through the ceiling.
Slowly, Peter and Kae worked together to lift the glass out of a skylight. Whispering, Kaelyn asks, "Are you sure you want to go in by yourself? I'm nervous, Peter."
"I'm sure. If he takes me down, I need you to be able to come in and help, but if he gets both of us we're screwed and we can't afford that. Trust me, we're going to be okay." Peter looked deeply into her eyes while they spoke, seeing all the worry and care for him. He took this moment to kiss her, softly and deeply. Kaelyn hated how much it felt like a goodbye. She tried with everything in her not to see it that way; to listen closely to his words. They were going to be okay.
"Peter..." the words hung at the tip of her tongue, but he stopped her.
"I don't want you to say anything you wouldn't say if this wasn't happening. This isn't goodbye, I promise," Peter reassured, cupping her face with his hand and meeting her eyes one last time before pulling back and putting his mask on. She put her mask back on as well in order to save time if she had to drop in for an emergency situation. Peter shot his web so he could slide into the room hopefully unnoticed, but she knew Toomes was going to see him. Still, she watched nervously. It was like passing a car accident driving down the road, she couldn't look away.
She couldn't hear what he was saying as she watched him confront Toomes in the midst of what looked like a true secret villain lab. Of course, this guy had a secret lair. How typical. As Peter begins to attack Toomes with his webs, she forces herself to look away. She can't watch this. She couldn't bear to watch Peter get hurt any longer. However, a loud crash sounds and her head whips back to face the inside of the building. Then, her worst nightmare is realized. Four columns that were supporting the roof toppled and the building began to collapse. Peter was crying out for help, so naturally, she answered. As the roof began to crumble, she leaped into the room.
"Kaelyn!" Peter exclaims when she lands in front of him, "You have to get out of here this place is gonna be rubble in minutes. I can't, you can't get hurt, not at my expense."
"Says the one who is under half a building," Kaelyn sighed, attempting to clear off some of the rubble.
"You don't understand. I need you to go after him. I'm stuck, Kaelyn and he's going to get away. If you don't get out of here and go after him, we're both dead and he gets away," Peter tried to explain but she wasn't interested in listening. "If I'm nothing without the suit, I shouldn't have it. I'm goddamn Spider-Man, with or without the suit."
Kaelyn looked confused as she backed up for a moment while Peter struggled to get out from under the pillars. He was mumbling things to himself as he tried to get up from underneath the pillars. Part of her was almost afraid because the building was about to collapse and he was sitting here talking to himself. After a moment, however, Peter burst up from the rubble. In a flash, he grabs Kaelyn by the waist and shoots a web up to the roof in order to get them out of there.
"What the hell was that?" she asked as soon as they were safely out of the building.
"That was me finally being something without the suit. Now, hold on," Peter attaches a web to the Vulture who is flying in an attempt to hang onto the plane leaving Avengers tower. He also attaches a web to Kaelyn to assure she doesn't lose her grip on him or vice versa. Eventually, once they reach the plane, Peter is able to release from the Vulture and hold onto the plane itself while attempting to stay hidden.
"Peter, what the fuck is your game plan here?" Kaelyn whispered as quietly as she possibly could.
"You know, just a typical homecoming on the outside of an invisible jet," Peter mumbled as they entered the plane through the opening the Vulture created and attempted to get to the wingsuit that had been abandoned while he carried on his business. "Fighting your best friend's, girlfriend's dad."
To make a bad thing worse, the Vulture discovers the two and comes at them. Peter attempts to shoot his web at Vulture but fails and the web snaps off, sucking the two towards the engines. The Vulture is drawn towards the propellers as well, but with Peter shooting a web to stop them, all of them escape death. Thankfully, though, the Vulture's wingsuit is slightly damaged, giving them the upper hand. Kaelyn didn't know what to do, but she knew she wanted to help. Activating the adherent substance in her suit, she broke free of Peter and stuck to the side of the plane. This was perfect timing as Peter was all but free falling off the plane. Luckily, she was able to reinforce his web to make sure he didn't accidentally break free. Meanwhile, the Vulture headed up to the top of the plane.
"Peter, we're about to crash into some skyscrapers. You redirect, I'll get him," Kaelyn instructed, yelling as loudly as she could over the windy night and the chaos. He nodded and shot his web at the right wing of the plane while she climbed up to the top of the plane where the Vulture was attempting to steal the contents of the plane.
"Give it up, Toomes. Liz doesn't want this. She doesn't need this," Kaelyn tried to dissuade him into letting the box in his hands go, "This plane is going down and as much as you royally suck, Liz's dead is not going to die tonight. The Vulture, however, can choke. Do you want to protect your daughter? Drop the box. Go, be a father and not an asshole."
Just as Toomes was about to respond, the plane crashed into a ride on Coney Island. Before Kaelyn can blink, everything around her is in ash and flames. She loses her grip on the plane and tumbles to the ground, all air leaving her lungs as she lands on her back. All sight of the Vulture is lost, but judging by chunks of wing-shaped metal, he's damaged as well. The smoke clouds her ability to breathe, so she takes off her mask in an attempt to let air into her lungs.
"Peter?" she screams, her voice going raw because of the smoke, "Peter, where are you?"
Just out of the corner of her eye, she sees Adrian Toomes with Peter pinned to the ground. He tries to fly away after a moment, but Kaelyn leaps on him just as he is about to fly off, weighing him down enough for Peter to get a web attached to him. However, the man flings both of them off, knocking Kaelyn to the ground a few feet away from her boyfriend. She watches with horror as the Vulture picks Peter's limp body off the ground by the hood of his suit. Then, he meets eyes with something and throws Peter to the ground.
The man grabs a crate and tries to fly off but a weary Peter shouts, "Your wingsuit. Your wingsuit's gonna explode!" He shoots up a web, but Toomes simply cuts it off. All of a sudden, a fireworks show of an explosion consumes Toomes as he meets the ground in a blaze of glory. Peter rushes into the flames and Kaelyn's fading conscious comes back in screaming color as she pulls herself off the ground. She runs in after him. She watches as Peter burns his hands on the searing metal in an attempt to lift the suit off of Toomes. Kaelyn would be damned if Liz was going to lose his dad tonight. She knew how that felt and Liz did not deserve to go through that. So, her hand made contact with burning metal as she and Peter worked together to get the suit off of him. Together, they drag him out of the flames coughing and wheezing.
"Do you have a piece of paper on you?" Peter asks and Kaeyln looks at him wildly.
"Peter, an hour ago, I was wearing a dress, you think there was anywhere to keep a notepad in either of those outfits?" she questioned, her mask in hand as she weakly pulls him into a victorious hug, "Is it over?"
He hugs her back as tightly as he could when he's clearly in large amounts of pain, "It's over. You know what, I might have a piece of paper..."
A few moments later, Peter webs up the Vulture with everything they could salvage from the plane. Together, he shoots his webs and gets them to the top of the Cyclone where they're truly alone. They settle down and he wraps his arm around her while they sit there, still in their suits with their masks off.
"I'm sorry this wasn't the Homecoming you wanted. Maybe we can get it right for Winter Formal?" Peter attempted an apology, hoping the girl would appreciate his attempt at humor.
She leaned into his arm, "Oh, you're gonna have to work twice as hard if you think I'm going to another dance with you, Peter Parker. You are in deep shit. But, I'm glad you're alive."
"I'm glad you're alive, too."
"Can I say something kind of dumb?"
"Always."
Kaelyn sighed, looking up into his eyes as she reached up to hold his face in her hand, "I know it's only been a couple of months and you, you totally do not have to feel this way about me, like at all, I mean, take your time, seriously. But, Peter, I think I'm in love with you."
Thankfully, the boy smiled and leaned down to kiss her for just a moment. When he pulled away, he responded, "Don't worry, I think I'm in love with you, too. Now, can I get you home? I'm sure Caden is gonna hate me already, but I don't need you getting home past curfew, too."
"With what? Flash's car?"
"Watch this," Peter said with a sly smile as he surprised her by grabbing her by the waist and shooting his webs so they were flying through the air. She giggled all the way down as he held her. That was how he took her home, on the rooftops of buildings, from web to web, until they landed on the rooftop of her apartment building.
They entered the apartment as quietly as they could, hopefully not alerting Caden. At least, they thought they were being quiet but Caden stumbled out into the apartment with wide eyes. "What the hell are you two wearing? Why do you smell like a campfire? Is he bleeding?"
"Uh, I can explain?" Kaelyn attempted, but words failed to reach her tongue.
"Kae, you know how I feel about superheroes, please don't tell me-"
As if on cue, there was a knock on the door, interrupting whatever rant Caden was about to go on. The girl smiled, "Perfect, I'll get it."
She pulled her hair out of the back of her suit so it fell around her shoulders. Before the dance, she had taken some advice from Toomes and hidden the ponytail, but now she was just letting it fall free. Still in her suit, her hand grasped the doorknob, undoing the deadbolt with her other hand. Nothing prepared her for who was behind that door. After all, she expected it to be Beth or something as that was the only person who ever showed up unannounced.
Behind the door stood a woman with the same bright red hair around her shoulders and a tall, brooding man next to her. Kaelyn took a step back as the door swung open, not sure she wasn't hallucinating.
"Mom, dad."
The woman, her mother, smiled dearly, "Kaelyn, it's been a while."
KAELYN ALBRIGHT WILL RETURN.
