22 - STOP LOOKING
KAELYN WAS SIMPLY DOING HOMEWORK WHEN SHE GOT THE CALL. The clock was ticking past five PM as the girl was locked away in her room, eyes glued to her books. Since that night on the roof, she and Peter had begun to work things out. Part of her knew it wasn't going to be easy, but she appreciated the jumpstart. At least, now she had some reassurance that they were going to be okay.
The blare of her ringtone caused the girl to jump out of her skin, not expecting the harsh break in the calm music flowing through her headphones. Quickly, she unplugged them and answered the phone call.
"Hey, what's up, Peter?" she spoke normally, expecting nothing more than a call from her boyfriend. However, the boy on the other line was hyperventilating and freaking out. Before he even spoke a word, it was clear something was wrong. "Peter, what's going on? Where are you?"
"I went to stop an arms deal so I could get closer to the guys selling those weapons you know the ones from D.C. and, and, then something happened and the boat got torn in half! In half! I shot so many webs trying to keep it from falling apart, my arms hurt so goddamn bad, but then even that wasn't enough. It wasn't enough, Kae."
Kaelyn's mind immediately went to wonder if she had seen anything on the news about an accident with the ferry, but it had been hours since she even glanced at the television. "Peter, what happened after that? Is everything okay?"
"Everyone on the boat is okay, I think the guys got caught. Mister Stark came and saved everybody. Like he always does when I'm not good enough. He, he took my suit, Kae. I'm nothing without the suit."
Those words sent a sharp pain through her heart. She couldn't believe the ideas Peter had engrained into his mind. After a moment of silence, she spoke quietly, "I'm coming over."
"Kae, you don't have to-"
"Nonsense. You have done the same for me so many times. If you don't want me, tell me, but if any part of you needs me, I'm there," she cut him off, offering as much as she could. So much of her wanted him to want her, wanted to be there for him the way he was there for her so many times. Yet she knew if he said no, she was going to have to live with that.
He was silent. For too long. Years passed, it felt. Quietly, barely above a whisper, through the phone, she heard him say, "I need you."
Without another word, she hung up and grabbed her keys.
"Where are you going? I made dinner," Caden asked as she stormed out of her room, "Peace offering?"
She softened, appreciating the fact that her brother was at least partially attempting to make amends. He knew she was a sucker for pasta nights. "Can you put in a Tupperware? It's an emergency or else I would stay, you know I would."
Part of him looked disappointed, but he still pulled out a container. Then, weirdly, another. He portioned it out and handed her both of them. With a sigh, he added, "For Peter. Drive safe."
With a relieved sigh, she grabbed the containers and left the apartment. She was happy to see Caden making at least kind of an effort, but it still felt forced. He was on edge around her, waiting for her to break again. She wasn't glass. Her brother had no need to walk on eggshells around her and the fact that he was doing so pissed her off greatly. Tapping her foot in the dingy elevator her apartment building, she waited anxiously for it to take her to the parking garage. Once she made it down there, an eerie feeling crawled its way down her spine, causing the hairs on the back of her neck to stand on edge. The place smelled crisp, cold from the evening rain. The lights hanging down flickered dangerously, giving her a somewhat limited vision. God, she hated being down here. Arms crossed and keys held through the slots of her fingers, she was tensed up and ready in case anything came at her. With her luck, something did. A hand clasped her shoulder and she yelped, grabbing the arm and ripping it around, twisting it backward.
The man groaned as he spoke through strained breaths, "Hey, hey, I don't wanna hurt you, I don't wanna hurt you, I promise."
"Then talk," she spoke through gritted teeth as she kept her grip tight.
"You're that spidey kid's girlfriend, right? I'm Aaron, Aaron Davis. Kid's been trailing me, trying to figure out where people are buyin' arms from. Fuckin' melted my ice cream, that bitch."
"How do you know who I am?"
"Not important, I just need to tell you: Stop looking for who killed your parents. You're not going to like what you find, trust me."
Kaelyn rolled her eyes, "Why the fuck would I trust you?" Despite her harsh words, she ever so slightly loosened her grip, giving the man just a little bit more room to breathe. However, she assured she maintained control.
"I got in too deep, I just wanted to get some guns off the streets, man, my nephew lives around here I don't want him involved in these alien guns shit. They're gonna kill me if you keep looking, they'll kill you and your little spidey-boyfriend. Business is good and they don't want little kids getting them exposed. Stop. Looking. Please, I'm begging you." The desperation in his eyes shone through like a flashlight. This man was not her enemy. He was a protector, she could see it in the way he spoke with such conviction through the pain.
"Aaron Davis. I'll remember that," she muttered, releasing his arm and letting him drop to the ground.
"How the fuck are you so strong? You're like three feet tall," the man gasped, scrambling to get back up and back away from her. "Your parents must have done some freaky shit to you."
She tensed at the mention of his parents, "What do you know about them? Tell me, please."
He shook his head, "Nah, nah, that is above my paygrade. Which is zero, by the way, I got fucking blackmailed into this. Just, they weren't who you think they were. They weren't the good guys, Kaelyn. Know that. I've done what I had to do, I'm getting the hell out of here."
All of her questions stifled as he ran out of the parking garage. Yet she was frozen, unable to move. She felt weighed down, the words that man spoke rippled through her veins, shaking her to her very core. Managing to pull out her phone, the screen lit up with a text from Peter, Where are you?
Somehow, this knocked her out of the paralyzing fear. In a moment, she remembered who she was. She was invincible, through and through. With a deep sigh, her composure returned. She was okay. Letting the fear leave her veins, she carefully walked over the car she and her brother shared, picking the tupperware she dropped when the man surprised her off of the ground. She groaned, using her jacket to wipe off the bottom. At least they hadn't opened. She had to count her blessings these days.
Even as she drove, those words crawled their way down every inch of her spine, sending chills throughout her body. They weren't the good guys. The thought repulsed her, causing her to want to vomit. There was no way. Her parents were investigators, nothing more. The words stop looking ran their way through her brain a million times n five minutes, stomping their footprints into a wet cement trail, destined to engrave themselves in her brain forever. Stop looking. Stop looking. Stop looking.
When she finally made her way to Peter's, she stopped and sat in the car. For a moment, nothing existed except for those words running their way through her head yet again. Why couldn't she have one good, normal day? When did that become too much to ask for?
After a moment, a deep sigh escaped her lungs. She put on her happy face and stepped outside her car. Yet even with her calming smile present in an effort to help Peter, those words wormed their way into her brain over and over and over again. Stop looking.
hey hi this was a pretty descriptive chapter for me which is whack i used to be really descriptive in this story and then i just kinda lost it but im working on getting back there! Sorry if the movie seems rushed, i just couldnt think of many other ways to implement kaelyn into those certain events so i chose to just have her comfort him after the fact and then add some more elements of her own plot line rather than focusing solely on the movie. i wanted to include aaron davis just because im hoping to include miles morales into this series more because i just love him so much and i already have so many sequels and spin offs for this series that i might as well plant some roots for a miles morales spin off ya know! Anyway, sorry for the long note if you even read this far! i hope you guys enjoyed this chapter and get ready for some big things to come!
