CHAPTER FOUR

↳ JUNE 1942

WATCHING STEVE'S TRANSFORMATION WAS BOTH nerve-wracking and breath-taking. Watching him preserve through the experiment made Jaq's nervous for what Steve would think when she stepped onto the same platform.

"What the hell?" The young woman heard Steve mutter in confusion as he watched her step up into the tank he had just been in previously. Jaq's gasped as his new, strong body grabbed onto her body, pulling Jaq away from the machine.

"S-Steve," Jaq muttered in a low voice as his grip tightened, "you're hurting me."

Steve's eyes widened and he immediately let go, realising what he had just done to his friend. He knew he could never intentionally hurt Jacqueline. The tall man in front of Jaq was still the same Steve, worried over others more than himself.

"What are you doing? Why are you going up there in that?" Steve looked the tanned girl up and down, noticing how she was wearing tight fitting clothes.

"I'm going to be just like you Steve, experimented on." Jaq told him simply, wishing he didn't complain too much.

"W-What? N-No way. You can't. You could die." Steve stared down at his best friend, grasping onto her hands tightly. Jaq bit her lip, knowing how this would hurt him more than her. Steve had always wanted to protect Jaq. And now he wasn't so sure what to do: support her or keep her from hurting herself.

"Look at you Steve, you're fine. I'll be fine, I promise." Jaq pulled the taller Steve into a hug, inhaling his scent of peppermint and medicine. Interesting.

"I love you," Jaq told him, pushing away from him. "You're my brother, Steve. Not truly but you made me feel like I could have another family away from my own."

Steve smiled at Jaq, nodding as the doctors surrounded her and put her into the tank.

I took a deep breath, I hope I could do this.

I hope I could make it.

I hope I could make a difference in the world. Especially since I was a women– I wanted to make a difference in America.

The door shut, sealing the dark haired woman in. Jaq couldn't see out of the glass as well as she hoped, praying that she could make it out alive.

"Red alert, red alert!"

Jaq gasped, hitting the heavy metal, praying she would get out of there. It felt like she was stuck in the small metal container for hours– but it must have only been minutes.

She hurt everywhere.

What's going on? Why are the sirens going off?

Jacqueline gasped as Doctor Erskine appeared in the small window, both in surprise and pain. She couldn't see what was happening but Doctor Erksine looked like he was in pain– and chaos was erupting behind him– where was Steve?

The pain wouldn't go away.

"Jaq, listen to me." She pushed the pain away, trying to focus on his muffled voice. "The facility is overheating and we're under attack. Your process isn't finished and we can't continue. We could kill you."

"Do whatever you have to do," Jaq gasped out, her attempts to muffle her screams fading. "J-Just make the pain end."

"Jacqueline, listen."

He paused and Jaq felt like it was hours before he spoke again.

"We have to freeze you until we get the final components for your experiment. It might take days, months, or years."

"Just do it."
