04: the crush fiasco
───────── ⋆⋅☆ Anish
It has been a week since I started getting the letters and roses. Though, I don't get them everyday but at least every alternative day. Oh, how I wish these letters were from her? If only it were from her, I wouldn't waste a split second to reply to her confession. As it is, the possibility that the letters were written by her was negligible. I’m pretty sure she didn't even know I existed before I introduced myself to her. God! This woman is making me go crazy for her.
It was day one of the sports fest of my freshman year . The upcoming women's basketball match between the CS department and the Mech department was the talk of the campus. It seemed like the match between them was usually a nail-biter. My roommate, Adhi and I went to watch over the match. And there, I saw her for the first time. The way she carried herself and stood for her team whenever it was necessary just made her stand out from the rest. Obviously, I shouldn't be cheering for my rival team but I just couldn't stop cheering for her. I didn't have an idea whether she was also a freshman or a senior. But all I knew was I was attracted to her.
That night after reaching my room, I literally asked Adhi to help me find her name. And Adhi with his pro detective skills found her. She was a freshman. And her name was Jessy Mathews.
The amount of courage it took me to ask her to participate in the contest with me is something that should be exaggerated. It literally took me two years to talk to her. And I agree I didn't have the balls to talk to her earlier. The contest was just a lame excuse. I just wanted to give myself a try to talk to her.
But what I didn't expect was her agreeing to participate with me. Never did I ever think that she'd agree. And the ‘yes’ from her made me roll over my bed and fall on the floor.
“Anish,” the voice brought me back to the world. It was Jessy. Oh shit. Did she see me smiling like a lunatic just now? Oh God! That would be embarrassing.
“Umm… are you free?” she asked. I was sitting in the canteen waiting for my friends to finish eating.
“Yeah, yeah. I’m very much free.” I said, ignoring the stares that my friends were giving me. I pushed myself up from the chair.
“I guess you are with your friends right now,” she said awkwardly after glancing at them staring at us intently as though a movie shooting was going on.
“No no. I finished eating anyway. Let's go somewhere else and talk,” I said as I grabbed her hand and walked out of the canteen. Gosh! That was so awkward. Only after reaching the bench outside the canteen did I notice that I was holding her hand. Oh my God! What did I do? Hot blood raised to my cheeks and her cheeks mimicked mine.
“Umm…,” I released my grip on her hand, reluctantly, “I'm sorry. I didn't mean to.”
“It's okay,” she muttered, looking everywhere else but me. Damn! She looks so cute when she's nervous. I rarely see her being nervous. Obviously, because she is the student head in the sports council. So he always carries a calm demeanor.
“So, what did you want to ask me?” I asked.
“Umm… do you mind me asking who your crush is? Only if you’re okay.” She asked, her eyes looking at mine with anticipation.
I was flabbergasted with the sudden question. My crush is asking who my crush was. Damn bro! How do I answer the question?
“Why do you ask though?” I asked as I took a seat on the bench and tapped the place beside me, indicating to her to take the seat.
“I feel like it would be better if I know who you like. I mean, it will add more meaning to the lyrics then.” She stated, plopping down on the bench beside me.
“She's feisty sometimes. Sometimes cold. Sometimes warm. Sometimes shy. She always puts others first before her. She is a moon in the night sky.” I whispered the last line softly, but loud enough for her to hear.
She looked at me intently. I could see something in her eyes. Something that looked like… pain? I wasn't sure.
“You really seem to like her a lot,” she said, giving the ever-pretty smile.
I thought she'd understand that I was speaking about her.
“Sometimes she’s a tubelight and acts dumb.” I stated, rolling my eyes.
She broke out in laughter. “That was cute.” She said between the chuckles. That comment made me stop breathing for a second. “Umm… I mean the way you described,” she said, abruptly stopping her laugh.
God. Why does she have to be like this? Everytime I’m with her, I just find something new about her to like her even more. It's like a möbius strip—continuous, seamless, without an end.
“Pretty,” I whispered under my breath.
“You said something?” she asked.
“No. Yeah. I just said the sky looks pretty.” I said, averting my gaze to the sky.
“It does,” she said, looking up at the sky. “My roommate has shifted to an apartment. So I was feeling lonely. Glad I came and found you.” She remarked.
It tasted like honey when she said that she liked my company. Gosh! I couldn't help but break out a wide smile.
“The pleasure is mine,” I said. “Oh wait, your roommate, I mean ex-roommate, is Maya?” I asked.
“How did you know?” She now looked at me as she confirmed my suspicion.
“Damn! I told right, that my roommate was looking for an apartment. He found one. He and Maya are sharing the apartment.” I said.
“Adhi was your roommate? Oh Gosh! Maya keeps complaining about him.” She stated, shaking her head in disbelief.
“Same here. Small world, indeed.”
