•What Christmas is all about...• Part 1

((Ok, ok I know what you're thinking, "Why are you doing a Christmas special in the middle of January?"
Well the better question is, why not. Aaaand I've had this idea floating around in my head for a while but Christmas was came and went before I knew it blah blah blah. Plus its been a while since I've even looked at this book, whoops. Anyway, here it is!
Word count: 2277 words

~^^~

"Dad, what's Christmas?"

Asgore's jaw slowly stilled as he stopped mid-chew through his eggs and stared at his son, eyes widening a little.

"What?"

"What's Christmas?", the smaller goat repeated, "I was reading through some of Mom's history books and came across an article about it but it used so many big words I didn't even know what it was saying and well, I was hoping you guys could explain it to me.", he finished, looking between the two older goats that sat on either side of him at the table.

"Christmas...", Toriel repeated to herself, "its been so long since...",she trailed off.

Asgore nodded. Ever since the war and being trapped in the underground, Christmas wasn't really their number one priority anymore. Why, it had been so long since they even celebrated the holiday. Long before Asriel was born.

Asgore remembered when the humans first taught the monsters of the wonderful holiday all those decades ago. It was about around the time the monsters had first began to settle near the human land.

He remembered all the fragrances, the foods, the decor, presents, but his favorite part was the Christmas tree. To be able to take an ordinary pine tree and make so wonderfully beautiful and meaningful was one of the best parts to Asgore. Well, besides the foods anyway.

The thought that his son never got to enjoy these wonders stirred Asgore's thoughts. To be honest if Asriel hadn't said anything he would have forgotten about the holiday all together.

"Well son", Toriel's voice broke Asgore out of his thoughts, "Christmas was a holiday that was once celebrated by both humans and monsters. It was a wonderful time filled with decorations, food, presents, and so much more."

Asriel's eyes widened. "Presents? You get presents??", he said, a small smile crawling its way onto his lips.

"Mhm.", Toriel confirmed, amused by his enthusiasm, "though, its been quite some time since monsters celebrated it, especially since we were trapped down here.", she said, a frown beginning to tug at the corners of her mouth when she saw her son's glee written face be replaced with a disappointed frown.

"Oh.", was all he managed as he began to gnaw at his now cold bacon, Toriel doing the same with her eggs.

"Asriel", Asgore said, breaking the tense silence, "how would you like to celebrate Christmas?"

~^^~

"Hear ye, hear ye!", a cat-like monster guard yelled as he reached the center of the town known as Snowdin, repeating what was written on the scroll that he was holding, "by declaration of of the King himself, the olden holiday known as...uh", he stopped mid-sentence as he brought the scroll closer to his face and squinted at the words, "uh, Christ...mas, Christmas!", he said, saying it with the 't' instead of it being silent, "shall for now on be celebrated in the Underground kingdom! The first celebration of many shall be held here, as no other part of the kingdom shall suit the holiday festivities . And because the author said so."

Monsters began to gather round the guard as he continued to speak, murmuring between themselves.

"Christmas? What's that?"

"It sounds dumb."

"I hope there's food."

"Why do you think the king all of a sudden wants to celebrate it?"

"No idea."

~^^~

Usually, it would take a lot to wake Gaster up, as in a lot of coffee, but his youngest son jumping up and down on his stomach is more than enough.

"Dad! Dad! Wake up!", a seven-year old Papyrus exclaimed.

"Papyr- oof-!", Gaster said as the wind was knocked out of his stomach, "Papyrus that's enough!", he cried.

Seeing as his father was awake the lad hopped of his stomach and onto the floor beside his bed. "Oh good you're awake! Sans tried to wake you up but you were snoring so loud so he told me to jump on your belly and-"

Gaster sighed as his son continued to ramble. He was a rather chatty one. He groaned and swung his feet over the side of the bed and stretched his aching bones.

"Papyrus, what's the meaning of this?", Gaster questioned his son, cutting him off from his sentence.

"Oh right!", the smaller skeleton said, realizing he was getting a bit off topic, "there's a while bunch of monster's outside talking about something called Christmas!", he exclaimed.

"Christmas?", Gaster gasped.

Before Papyrus could question his father's knowledge on the topic he rushed out of room, his long gown dragging behind him.

Gaster rushed into the living room where he found his eldest son lounging about on the couch while watching a Rom-com.

"Sans did you tell Papyrus to jump on my stomach?", Gaster said crossing his arms and tapping his slipped covered foot on the floor.

"don't get your dress in a twist he didn't mind.", Sans said, not taking his eyes off the TV.

"Wh-- Its not a dress!", Gaster exclaimed, fed up with his son's behavior.

"yeah, yeah, whatever. by the way, the guy that was yelling outside came in sayin' something about the king needin' ya, so you might wanna put some clothes on. don't want the king seenin' ya in your dress now do we?", he smirked.

Gaster rolled his 'eyes' and strolled back in to his room, picking Papyrus up and setting him just outside his door before closing it behind him.

~^^~

Gaster adjusted his white turtle neck that poked out of his black lab coat and walked out into the cold that was Snowdin. He had given Sans specific instructions to stay in the house at all times while he was gone and keep a sharp eye on Papyrus. Last time he left those two alone their house almost caught on fire because Papyrus saw a spider. He loved those two to bits but sometimes he wondered how he even put up with him.

He trudged through the thick snow until he made it to the boat of the River person.

"Tra la la, hello there Gaster.", they said in a sing-song voice.

"Hello River person", he greeted, "Hotlands please."

~^^~

The River person sped off without another word the second Gaster stepped foot into Hotlands. They were always a peculiar sight in the 'eyes' of the skeleton but he never had time to dwell on what might lie behind their cloak, much like now.

Making his way (downtown) towards the castle, Gaster waved and greeted the guards and your everyday monster as they saluted him when he went by.

A while later he was finally greeted with the sight of the castles grand double doors and two dog guardsmen stand on either side of them. Gaster was usually wary around dog monsters for reasons that explained themselves but something was off about these guards. They were...wearing Santa hats??

"State your business.", one guard barked.

"Look you don't have to do this schtick, you know its me.", Gaster remarked, yet he was more distracted by their hats.

The two looked at the skeleton before looking at one another and nodded, opening the doors for Gaster to walk in.

-------

Gaster has seen some shit during his years, but the second he walked through those castle doors this got the number spot on his "wtf" list.

The walls and columns were gleaming with colorful strung up lights that seem to nearly blind the skeleton. The one pristine white tilled floor now had a red rug rolled along it with what appeared to be...fake snow? The walls were plastered with Christmas themed wallpaper.

Where Asgore got all these decorations eluded Gaster so.

He was so caught up in staring at the decor that he didn't even notice the horned snake-like guard in front of him.

"Ssssir? W.D Gassster?"

"Huh? O-oh! Please excuse me.", the skeleton said sheepishly as he starred down at the guard who wore custom made armor to be able to fit his slim scaly body and much like the guards outside he also wore a Christmas hat.

"The king issss thissss way, sssssir.", he said leading the way, Gaster following close behind him.

~^^~

"Ah, Muffet! Just the spider monster I wanted to see!", Asgore said, his face breaking into a grin as he saw the spider lady emerge from the double doors of his throne room.

Said spider curtsied before the goat-like monster. "My king."

"Yes, yes,", he said, dismissing her actions with a wave of his hand, "Recently, I've heard you were pretty handy when it came to making clothing so I have a very special request for you.", he said pulling out a folded piece of paper and handing it to her. "I need you to make me something just like that."

Muffet's many eyes scanned the paper before a grin made its way onto her lips. "Oooh, right away your majesty! I'll have this done before you know it!", she said making her way out the door.

"Excellent! And don't forget, the party starts at eight!", he called after her.

"Yes, yes, darling. Ta ta~!", and without another word she was gone.

Asgore let out a content sigh as he leaned back in his throne and stroked his beard. Things were going wonderfully. Toriel along with some of the servants were helping bake cakes and other goods, other servants were decorating the castle, and best of all his son was happy. He practically had stars in his eyes when Asgore had offered to celebrate Christmas again. If it made him this happy then they'd definitely celebrated next year, and the year after that.

Asgore couldn't wait to make his big appearance in Snowdin. He getting excited just thinking about it. Never had he had this much fun, especially in the last few years, with all the planning and training the guards, ect. Its nice just being able to take a brake and have fun. They might as well while they're down here, right?

Asgore was ripped from his thoughts as the double doors opened once again to reveal his one and only Royal scientist.

"Gaster!", he exclaimed, "so good to see you!"

"Hello your majesty.", the skeleton said, though he was more distracted by the decorations that adored the throne room. "What...what is all this?"

"Haven't you heard? We celebrating Christmas again!", Asgore said with his usual smile.

"Yes but...why? What about work and-"

"Gaster", the king said, stopping Gaster mid-sentence, "work is the last thing you need to worry about right now. In fact, no one shall work today. Its a holiday! Everyone should be able to enjoy it!"

"Not to question your judgment, your highness but, don't you think this is a bit sudden?"

"Nonsense Gaster!", Asgore chuckled, "besides, everyone seems to me having fun! Now, down to business..."

~^^~

"What is that?", a gilled bird-like monster said as he stared down at the blueprints Gaster brought from the castle and to the lab that were strewn across the desk.

"Yeah, it looks so weird.", an fur covered crocodile-like monster said as he stood beside the bird.

"Well it doesn't matter how weird it looks the king requested it it and by God if doesn't get it someone's going home without a job tonight.", Gaster snapped at the two. They gulped and quickly nodded their heads. "Yes sir!"

The skeleton sighed. "Good. Now gather the other employees in the meeting room. We have a lot to discus..."

~^^~

"papyrus? buddy? where are ya?", Sans said as he looked under the couch, only to no avail. He'd taken a quick nap thinking everything would be fine and the next thing he knew when he woke up Papyrus was gone. He stared to panic until he went into his room and noticed an open window.

"dad's gonna kill me...", he muttered.

~^^~

Papyrus ran around town and watched in awe as the towns folk decorated houses, bought presents, cooked, ect. He thought it was great that everyone was working together! To think he'd have miss all of this if he stayed inside! Luckily it was easy to slip past Sans while he slept. He knew his father would be mad that he snuck out but if he helped make this the best holiday ever then he'd totally forget about the whole sneaking-out thing and instead be proud of him! Papyrus could practically hear the praise now!

"Papyrus! You've made this the best Christmas ever! I'm so proud that I've completely forgotten that you disobeyed me by sneaking out of the house! You've always been my favorite son!

He only ever wanted his father's praise along with the rest of the Underground's. He'd be famous! But first he'd have to find something to help with first...

He was determined!

~^^~

((Aaaand cut! This turned out so long that I decided to make it a two parter so until the next chapter's out you'll have to suffer in silence like everybody else (=^-ω-^=) Also, since Valentines Day next month I might, keyword might, do a special for that too, tho it might be late idk.
