They used to not go out when it was raining, misty, or if visibility was poor because they couldn't camouflage and therefore would be sitting ducks to a big dragon they couldn't see. It used to be Dawn who couldn't camouflage. She had thought she was a MudWing. It wasn't her fault, it also wasn't Flutterwing's fault. Dawn had grown up without a fully Rainwing parent, therefore had never found out she was a RainWing.

Now they didn't go out because Flutterwing couldn't fully camouflage and could put them both in danger.ย

"Sis you're doing it again."ย

Dawn huffed and looked back longingly at the cave entrance. Why did Flutterwing invite Aster and Grove over anyway? The two sisters hadn't even seen the couple in a while.

Dawn zoned out quite a lot. She would sit down and just think. It was comforting to just settle down and listen to the comforting sound of her brain mulling over the facts. Flutterwing didn't like to stop and think. She often rushed right into stuff without thinking about the consequences, such as throwing Flamesilk at a big dragon and hoping it didn't come back for vengeance later.

A dumb hope, but one that had worked out, for the most part. "Jeez, you're really zoning out today."ย

Flutterwing swept her tail in a wide arc, and a small green lizard darted from the undergrowth and ran in blind panic across their talons. I was thinking the same about you. Dawn wanted to say, but of course, she didn't. That would be rude.

Hoping for a cunning response, Dawn flicked through her mental calendar of when all the fruits would be ripe. The pineapples wouldn't be ripe for another week or so. The wrong season entirely for papayas, and the kiwis wouldn't be ready for another month. That meant banana again. Dawn sighed and kicked a small rock out of the way. It skittered away before landing in a thick mat of dead leaves woven with sticks.

The rock lay in a slight imprint on the ground. Suddenly Dawn was paying very close attention to the ground. She sank in every detail, every dent. Then, there! a neat line of dents leading across the game path they were walking on. Each dent was around six feet apart in both directions. "Flutterwing"ย

Dawn said, her tone of voice making her sister turn around as quickly as she could.ย

"What?" Flutterwing sounded distant.

Dawn pointed, and Flutterwing jerked into reality. Dawn knew who she was thinking about. Flutterwing approached the tracks. The underbrush had recently been disturbed. Great, fresh tracks.ย There was only one creature large enough to make tracks these big.ย

"Big dragon," Flutterwing didn't say the rest of what was on their minds.ย

Blood in the moonlight. Your fault. Flutterwing actually hates you-ย

"Look, the tracks are too small and too careless to be full-grown."ย

"Of course," Dawn said, feeling rather stupid. Of course, she doesn't waste time worrying. Still, Dawn's ears swiveled in anticipation as they stepped over the tracks.

As they stepped over the tracks Dawn could have sworn she saw movement in the trees beyond. Blood is just on my mind, it's nothing, really. Still, Dawn wasn't sure.ย

"Uh... sis, is it just me, or is something moving over the-"ย

Then the big dragon burst out. It was, indeed, a juvenile. Its scales were a deep red shade with a stripe of musty brown on its back. The big dragon eyed them wildly. Oh, it must know it can't win in a fight.ย The dragon wasn't much bigger than them, but it was still dangerous, with sharp teeth and claws.

No, it's not going to back down, still think it's invulnerable. The ' big ' dragon huffed and hunched up, ready to pounce. Another young one jumped out of the bushes, its scales were a dusty gray and it was slightly smaller than Dawn, but its teeth still gleamed red from an earlier meal. They're not hungry, it's a game to them. That still wasn't much of a relief, considering that even young big dragons were not gentle playmates.ย

As long as their mother doesn't show up, we should be fine. Dawn's heart sank when she saw a third big dragonet, this one a dull brown, like the stripe on the first dragon's back, zigzag happily from out of the bushes. The red male leaped now, clearly delighted now that Dawn and Flutterwing were outnumbered. Flutterwing raked her talons across the dragon's snout and he jumped back in surprise. He shook his head and crouched again, ready to spring.

A fourth head poked out of the brush and Flutterwing let out a curse, while Dawn only thought hers: Fig Wasps! That broke the spell, and the red dragon jumped again. This time Dawn got a chance to test her claws, they slashed him in the flank. It made her feel slightly nauseous at the sight of the blood. 'Nonsense, a little blood is fine.' that'sย what Flutterwing would have said to that. The fourth dragon in the bushes started to make a loud, high-pitched squeal. Flutterwing launched herself into the undergrowth with a loud crash.

Leaving Dawn with three juvenile big dragons to handle by herself.

Dawn didn't even blame her sister. She wasn't much of a worrier or a thinker for that matter, she was a do-er. She doesn't think before she acts. Dawn grumbled to herself as she eyed her opponents. She could get her to venom the red but it was risky, he could lash out from pain and rage. Now the gray leaped, wiggling in anticipation at the thought of her claws in Dawn's body. Dawn's venom got there first. The gray let out a yelp and dropped, dragging herself away. Her brother, the dull brown rushed forward and began frantically nosing her.

The red, clearly mad now jumped and managed to cut passed Dawn's flailing claws, cutting her on the shoulder. Then Red, as she was calling him, pranced in a tight circle. He was showing off that he was the first one to draw blood. Dawn remembered Flutterwing's advice when she was teaching Dawn to hunt. Just because you drew blood, it doesn't mean the hunt is over. Red clearly didn't know this important fact.

Just a game to him. Dawn gritted her teeth against the pain and focused on Red's body as he barreled toward her. She moved all her strength to her tail. He came up, Dawn had her teeth clamped so hard that her snout had turned white. Dawn sidestepped him easily, and as he glared around in bewilderment Dawn swung.

Her tail hit Red using all of her strength. He froze, his eyes came out of focus, and he started to sway. He crumpled to the ground. Dawn was relieved to see the slight rise and fall of his flanks. He's not dead, just unconscious. Now Dawn could focus on Flutterwing. The scuffling noise in the undergrowth had stopped. That probably-no, HAS to mean she won. "Flutterwing?" Dawn stepped down the trail broken from the impact of her sister's pounce.

She found Flutterwing sitting triumphantly on top of a golden-flecked brown dragonet. The dragonet was a female. She squirmed under Flutterwing's weight.ย

"Hi, Dawn! You sure can do a lot of damage, oh wait! That's it! Mother should have named you Damage!" Dawn rolled her eyes as Flutterwing shifted her weight. For a minute herย anxiety was gone, replaced with a sort of tingling sensation that scared her. It also scared her how, well, happy she felt about the damage she caused.

Now that Flutterwing was practically off of her, Golden bolted out from under Flutterwing and sped down to her unconscious brother. She let a screaming distress call and from somewhere nearby they heard a loud roar and wing beats. Fig wasps! A massive scarlet shape, three times bigger than Flutterwing, landed right of Gray and Brown. She looked, and sounded, furious.ย

"Let's go," Flutterwing whispered, "we don't have a place here."

Yet Dawn didn't want to leave. As they moved away, towards the banana trees, Dawn turned around to see the mother big dragon looking straight at her. Dawn saw the look in her eyes. The silent question,ย why did you have to do this?ย  As Dawn turned around, she whispered, "Sorry, just sorry."
