Izzy was questioning every decision she'd made leading up to that second. The second she ignored all the alarms going off in her brain when she decided she would ride with Dom. She had completely ignored his presence when they had loaded the cars onto the cargo plane but now that they were strapped in and idle, she had to force herself not to look at him. She found herself searching for any resemblance between them and she noticed it in the little things. His fists clenched tightly when he didn't like the sound of something and it was a bad habit Izzy knew she had — Genie usually being the only one to notice and would give her his hand to squeeze instead. She had his eyes, that she noticed right away since her mother's were on the lighter side.
"First mission?" Dom asked the girl quietly. He could feel her glance at him every few seconds and he pretended not to notice.
"No." Izzy replied. "Had my first when I was eight I think."
"Eight?" Dom grunted out. He couldn't imagine the little girl he made sandwiches for putting herself in danger the way she is now. "Nobody had you out in the field for when you were a kid?"
"Oh, you meant field mission." Izzy smiled sheepishly as she corrected herself. "My first time out in the field I was sixteen I think. Wasn't anything like this though. I always stayed at the base as a hacker before that. Now my boss likes to switch it up."
"Got it." Dom nodded. "And a couple days ago? That was a mission?" Izzy visibly flinched and nodded.
"That day was. All those days from when I was a kid, those weren't." Izzy clarified. "I really did used to go in there and buy sandwiches for my Grandpa and uncle. But yeah, a few days ago, that was for my boss."
"And the kidnapping?" Izzy didn't know it but Dom had his finger pressed on the talkie button. Everyone in the cars around them could hear their conversation, but he mainly did it for Letty. His girl knew Izzy had something more going on and seeing her at the base, only confirmed it but it still left a lot of questions.
"My uncle's dramatic." Izzy scoffed. "I was brought in for a mission and instead of just using the going to school ruse, he had to be extra. So yeah, um, the kidnapping was a lie. I was just relocated with my uncle."
"Your uncle works with you?"
"Oh uh not anymore." Izzy stammered. "I guess you can say he retired." More like he decided to betray the people he worked with and go do his own thing. "Oh, hey, I heard about your house. I'm sorry."
"It's okay." Dom accepted her apology with a small smile. He removed his finger from the button and fastened his seatbelt straps when the plane shook from turbulence. "Is it true you've been tracking Shaw?"
"Yeah." Izzy nodded. "I've had eyes on him for a while. He's just never been a priority for us so my boss has kept that information private. I know you're only doing this to get to him so once we get back I can give you every digital file I have on him. You'll be able to find him."
"Thanks." Dom appreciated the favor the girl was doing.
"Hey Roman, you freaking out ain't you?" Izzy snorted as Tej's voice came through the walkie talkie.
"No." Was Roman's reply.
"Yeah you are."
"I said no."
"It takes a grown man to embrace his feelings. If you need to cry just go ahead and cry." Izzy laughed and she turned to Dom and his lips twitched upwards as he held his chuckles in.
"As your friend you know I'm concerned about your well-being which is why I took the precaution of putting some adult diapers in your glove compartment."
"And if you look behind you, I packed you some tissues and baby wipes." Monty's deep voice boomed through the speaker and Izzy could practically see Roman's eyes rolling.
"Can you just chill out, man?" Roman whined into the talkie.
"I have seen some crazy shit Dom but this really could make some waves so let's just try to keep it as lowkey as possible, yeah?" Mr. Nobody's voice interrupted the taunting Roman was receiving and Izzy watched Dom smirk at her before replying into the speaker.
"Don't I always?"
"Um no you don't," Izzy spoke up before he could remove his finger and everyone listened in as she sassed him. "I've seen your record and the videos. You literally cause a scene everywhere you go."
"Izzy's right—"
"Of course I am."
"So I tell you what, you knock it down a couple of notches this time and I'll trade my Belgian for a keg of Corona."
"You'll be doing yourself a favor there." Dom chuckled.
"Can somebody just walk me through what we're supposed to be doin'?" Izzy rolled her eyes and grabbed the comm from Dom.
"Listen, dude, this whole thing was your idea. Man the hell up and shut up." She handed it back to Dom and he placed it in the cup holder. "Is he always like this?"
"You get used to it." Dom shrugged. The alarm blared around them and Izzy glanced back to see the plane open up. "Ready?"
"No." Izzy gulped. She turned wide eyed back to Dom who watched her carefully.
"We'll be fine," Dom assured her. "I've got this."
"That's easy for you to say. You do all sorts of crazy shit all the time!" Izzy's breathing started to get heavy and Dom tried to wrack his brain for how he could help her. But somebody beat him to it.
"Izzy." Genie's voice rang through the walkie talkie and nobody dared to intercept it as they waited for what he had to say. "You okay?"
"Shit," Izzy mumbled and picked up the walkie-talkie. "I'm good." She replied. "I'm ready." It was a lie but the plan would never happen if she said otherwise.
"That's my girl." Dom quirked an eyebrow at his words and the sight of the girl's cheeks turning red. "See you down there." Dom had put some trust in them when he found out he'd be the one driving Brian's car, that same amount of trust was put in Dom when Genie watched Izzy climb into the bald man's car.
"Okay, okay." Izzy took a deep breath and turned to Dom. "I'm ready."
"Hold on." That was the only warning she was given before the car was put in reverse and soaring through the air. The car shook as it fell through the sky and Izzy had to force herself to keep her eyes open as she held onto the handle above the door tightly.
"This has to be the stupidest thing I've ever done." The girl laughed nervously. "Grandpa's gonna kill me."
"What about your parents?" Dom tried to distract the girl. He knew the conversation should've been saved for a time when they weren't soaring through the air, but he wanted to know.
"Don't have any." Izzy whipped her head around and tried to see the other cars as Brian's voice echoed through the speaker. Roman and Cowboy never made it off the plane. "Mom died when I was born and never knew my Dad. You?"
"Mom died when I was a kid and Dad died when I was barely legal. Sorry."
"Don't worry about it. Shit happens, that's life." Izzy shrugged. "Roman's missing."
"Shit," Dom swore and picked up the walkie. "Tej!"
"I'm already on it," Tej replied.
"I'm sorry to let y'all down but Cowboy and I are gonna go ahead and stay up here."
"Nah brother, I'm sorry to let you down," Tej replied.
"But I'm not." Monty chuckled and did the honors. With his fist smashing into the button, Roman's car was pulled from the plane and flew down to everybody's altitude.
"He deserved that," Izzy commented as she finally saw his car join the formation. Dom could only chuckle and watch as they got closer to the ground.
"Hold on." He warned the girl again before hitting the parachute. The car jostled around and Izzy closed her eyes as she waited for the impact.
"That wasn't so bad." She sighed when they were finally on the ground. Dom sped down the street and she relaxed slightly in her seat as she assumed the worst was over.
But it was only beginning.
