[ CHAPTER FOUR ! ]

THE BLARING rapture of sirens became excruciatingly unbearable, causing my palms to clutch my ears as I slid further into the cushioned passenger seat.

Lights, sirens, the midnight stars glaring harshly in my direction from the exoskeleton of the ebony sky—everything happening at once. My mind began spiralling into the abyss of darkness, waiting for it all to end.

A large fist immersed in abrasive bruises knocked harshly on the window, increasing the contracting reflex of my heart to pulse faster.

Expect to be met with a police officer, I peered my gaze upwards, perching myself on my knees in slow, alluring, movements.

A sigh of relief spilled from my lips as I found Finn's eyes drowning in pigments of caramel.

"Mill, open the door right fucking now, the cops gonna pull in!" He shrieked, slamming his fists harder upon the glass window. My body shook at the penetrating sound.

My fumbled joints unlocked the door, shaken by how swift the boys' legs pumped towards the vehicle.

"Fuck, fuck, fuck!" Finn aggressively hissed under his breath, pulling out of the lot as fast as he could with hands coated in vibrating shivers.

The police car violently whipped past us, causing Finn to let out a yelp of satisfaction. His slender fingers clamped around his mask, thrusting it off as he ran a hand through his distraught raven fringe.

"Fuck those bastards," he chortled to himself.

"D–Did you see that?" I let out a large intake of breath, pacing my heart rate to a bearable speed.

He turned to me, lost in a state of nirvana. "Fuck yeah I did, that was incredible!"

"I—what?"

"God Mäuschen, you're so innocent," he threw his disheveled charcoal curls back, "that's pretty fucking precious."

"Hey, Wolfhard," Gaten called from the trunk the rest of the group situated themselves on. "We've got enough money to buy off Joe."

"We're gonna get fucked, boys!" Finn hollered, sparking the cigarette swaying around his damp lips.

I gulped loudly. "What does he mean?"

The raven-haired boy erupted in a fit of laughter as magenta sprouted amongst my features.

"I have this friend—likes drugs, does drugs, sells drugs," he explained in between catching his breath, barely paying attention to the road. "This friend of mine sells drugs to me because I also like drugs and do drugs, Mill."

"Oh, well, sounds like you keep yourself occupied," I nervously sputtered.

"It is a busy hobby," he piped up sarcastically. "I mean, you have to get the money, buy the drugs, do the drugs, and sleep it off for hours or even days sometimes."

He turned his weather-beaten features to face me, slowly divulging me in a trance that left my irises glaring at the freckles dusted upon his rose-kissed cheeks. I felt the blood reverberate to my cheeks as he smiled widely—a satisfied gleaming radiating from him.

"You're cute when you're flustered like that, Mill," he grinned. "You'll be fun to play with."

The air purifying my lungs wafted into the seams of the atmosphere as I tried to decipher what he meant, "I—I. . ."

"I'm just messing with you Mäuschen, you're too inexperienced for me."

"Thank heavens for that," I whispered to myself as he took a long drag of his cigarette.

"So, do you want to continue staying with us?" He asked.

"If it's alright with you and your friends."

"They don't have a say in house guests, so don't worry about that," he explained. "Although, I don't see why they'd disagree to have you stay with us anyway, they like to pick on new pray so you better sleep with an eye open."

"I don't know how I'm going to adjust to all of. . . this," I admitted sheepishly.

"Ha, it's like when you do drugs," he hummed, clouds of smoke effervescently exhaling from him as he spoke. "The first few times you do it, it's really scary and unknown, but subsides to a state of nirvana that makes you forget all about that fear you once had."

I glued my boots to the cushioned passenger seat, enveloping myself in an embrace as I pressed my face to my knees, waiting for Finn, Noah, and Gaten to attend to their business exchange.

My eyes neurotically roamed around the midnight sky embedded in oceans of constellations; the atmosphere glazed in rays of eloquence.

The sky was too pretty to sit upon the exoskeleton of an abandoned house that had a lawn in need of maintenance, and shattered windows reflecting shadows of the figures inside.

I turned my attention to Caleb who was knocking on the driver seat window, requesting permission to join me in my newfound solitude. With a painful sigh, I opened it with a loud rustic screech due to the tainted door.

"What's up, Millie?" His lips perked upwards.

I shrugged. "Nothing really, just waiting to get out of here, it's really creepy."

"Oh, Joe's house?" He affirmed. "His house isn't even the scariest part."

"Oh, I can't imagine what monster is hiding behind those doors," I muttered.

Caleb snorted, "you're funny, kid."

"What's up with that by the way," I spoke up, perching my legs in a crossed position. "You're all about my age yet you all see me as though I'm a little kid."

"Well, you're only seen younger to us because you've never seen this part of life," he explained. "It's not just some movie or book you read, this is the real shit and you're not prepared for it yet."

"Okay, just because I don't go using guns and robbing stores does not mean I've sat on the pedestal of life either."

"That's not what I'm saying, Millie," Caleb spoke, clearly amused at my frustration. "Look at it like we're trying to teach you how to grow up."

"Oh, trust me, I don't need advice on growing up from you people."

"Yes, because you didn't happen to stumble in an abandoned warehouse occupied by a young group of drug-mulls and thieves, right?" He cocked an eyebrow.

"Whatever, you guys didn't magically formulate a group of criminals overnight so don't contradict yourself," I retaliated.

"Touché," he grinned, revealing a sharp set of pearls.

Finn knocked on the door with a plastic bag balanced in the palm of his hand. "Caleb, get the fuck out."

"Sorry, I was just warning Millie about your sleep walking habits."

Finn snarled toward him, "I don't fucking sleep walk, now get out asshole."

Caleb exited the vehicle to take a seat with the rest of the boys in the back as Finn squeezed his scrawny torso into the driver's seat.

"Caleb gets on my fucking nerves sometimes," he ranted to himself.

"But, he's still your best friend."

"That's beside the point, he's still an agitating ego-manic," Finn hissed, thrashing a pool of spit out his window.

I winced at the sight. "He doesn't seem like an 'ego-manic' to me, really."

The curly-haired boy sighed, gulping a large intake of saliva. "You don't know him enough to make a judgement yet, so just keep your lips sealed, sit tight, and look pretty."

I couldn't help but build up a small amount of annoyance towards him, despite the intimidation he still held over me. "Don't tell me how to act, F—Finn."

Surprisingly, a smile slipped from his once angered expression, swiftly eliminating my train of thought.
