You're Perfect, Too

Mabel laughed loudly as Anne laid down in the boat, "Be careful, Anne!"
"She does really look dead." Ruby whispered to Jane and Mabel, "My mother said all play acting is abominable and wicked."
"Ruby you must not mention your mother as this was hundreds of years before she was born." Anne explained, not opening her eyes. "It ruins it."
"Diana!" Mrs. Barry gasped in horror as she saw her daughter.
"U-Uh, mother!" Diana quickly stood, backing away in horror. Anne quickly stood, getting out of the boat and moving to stand by Mabel.
"I've been calling! You were to be practicing lessons! And, and here I find you engaged in perilous... senseless.. oh, whatever this is!" She shouted, looking around at the girls in disappointment.
"We were practicing lessons.. in a way." Anne defended, stepping closer to Mabel. Mabel felt her face redden in blush, and hoped no one would notice.
"We're studying the poem Lancelot and Elaine at school and we decided to reenact it-" Diana tried to explain, but her mother cut her off.
"Diana. Home. Now. You girls as well, before you catch your death."
"But the girls just got here and we were simply-" Diana tried again, but yet again, her mother cut her off.
"Diana! I will be heard."
Diana slowly walked from her spot, Jane and Ruby following closely behind her.
"Anne. Be on your way, please." Mrs. Barry said, "You as well, Mabel."
Mrs. Barry didn't seem happy that Mabel was not joining her, instead choosing to stay with Anne.
She hoped that she would not complain to her mother about it. She was technically supposed to be somewhere else, too.
Anne sighed, watching the girls walk away. "So much for romance.."
"Do, um, you can come back to my house.. if you'd like?" Mabel asked nervously, "You don't have too, I'm only asking."
Anne nodded, causing Mabel to grin widely. Mabel raised her hand, indicating she wanted Anne to take it.
"Shall we?" Anne's bright smile returned and a giggle left her perfect lips. Mabel refused to acknowledge her own thoughts about Anne's lips.
Anne slipped her mittened hand into Mabel's before speaking, "We shall."
Mabel grinned, pulled Anne along, her heartbeat increasing as Anne's grip tightened on her hand.
"Woah!" Anne laughed, stumbling forward and accidentally knocked Mabel over. Seconds later, Anne tripped as well.
"Umph!" Mabel groaned as Anne fell on top of her. "Ouch.."
Anne gasped, placing both her hands beside Mabel's head to push herself up.
Mabel opened her eyes, her breath hitching in her throat as she stared at the girl hovering over her. Mabel felt her heartbeat quicken even more, and her nerves increased.
Mabel's brown eyes scanned her face, and she let out a sigh. Anne looks so pretty. Her cheeks were flushed, and slightly pink, and a small smile was evident on her face. Her pink lips parted as she tried to catch her breath.
"Oh my goodness! I'm so terribly sorry!" Anne exclaimed, scrambling to get up. Anne reached down to pull Mabel up, but unfortunately, Anne didn't know her own strength.
Anne pulled Mabel up so fast, she ended up knocking them both straight back to the ground.
Mabel gasped, but let her laughter take over. She rolled off Anne, her laughter continuing to rack her body.
"Anne! When did you get so strong?" Mabel cried out, pushing herself off the ground.
"I have no idea!" Anne laughed, accepting Mabel's help.
The girls' laughter continued for minutes, though Mabel's heart rate never decreased.
"Do you think you'll stay for supper? Or must you get back to green gables?" Mabel questioned suddenly after her laughter finally subsided.
Anne thought for a moment, "Marilla will want me home."
Mabel nodded, connecting their hands again. She liked the feeling of holding Anne's hand, though she knew she'd like it a whole lot more if neither of them were wearing gloves.
Mabel couldn't help but grin as they walked down the path, their hands connected.
Part of her said she was wrong. What she was feeling was wrong. That she shouldn't be feeling so happy holding hands with a girl.
But for now, just for now, Mabel ignored that side of herself. She let herself enjoy the moment with Anne.
She let herself feel happy with Anne.
"What're you smiling at?" Anne asked, suddenly cutting herself off eith a gasp as she pulled her hand from Mabel's, "Are you thinking about someone romantically?"
Mabel frowned, missing the feeling of Anne's hand.
"Wh-What?" Mabel stuttered, her face turning red.
"You're blushing! I wonder who it is! It could be Charlie! Mabel Sloan sounds so nice."
"Um, An-" Mabel tried, to no avail.
"Wait! Ruby and Diana mentioned Moody! Mabel Spurgeon.. I guess that sounds nice, too.. I hope it's not Billy, because-"
"Anne-"
"He truly is the worst. And I mean that in the nicest way possible."
"Anne-" Mabel tried again, getting increasingly confused at the redheaded girl's rambling.
"Or! Maybe it's Jerry! That would be so tragically romantic! Forbidden, even! A beautiful rich girl like you and a farm hand-"
"Anne-" Mabel tried once more, only to fail, yet again.
"Unless.. Mabel Blythe?"
"Anne!"
"What? Oh, sorry! Have I been rambling? I have been, huh?"
Mabel giggled, "Yes, but it's quite alright."
"But who is it?" Anne cried out into the wind.
Mabel smiled teasingly, but stayed silent as she turned and continued on her way. Mabel only got a few feet in before Anne was by her side again.
"Who is it? I need to know!"
Mabel stayed silent, beginning to panic. She couldn't just say 'Why, Anne! I've been thinking of you!' No. But she could use Moody again?
She felt bad for all of this, of course. He deserved someone who would truly love him.
Mabel didn't. But she still said his name, because it was the easiest way to go.
"Moody.." Mabel mumbled, looking down at her feet.
"I knew it! Mabel Spurgeon." Anne seemed to grimace at the name. "It sounds... nice?"
Mabel giggled, looking over at the redhead, "If you believe so, sure."
Anne smiled, "Perfect... I-I mean, uh, the name! Not you. Not that you're not perfect! Because you are perfect!"
Mabel shook her head with a smile, "You're perfect, too, Anne."
