The Unexpected
As doctors were told to expect the unexpected. To never underestimate a situation and to always think one step ahead in case something bad happens. Although we apply it to work situations it doesn't always happen to real life. Because with real life you get the unexpected. You get the details that you didn't think would happen. So what do you do when you get the most unexpected news?

Friday night
Derek and Alison had chosen Fogón Cocina Mexicana restaurant as it was a place they used to come almost every Friday night.
"Ah, our two favorite customers are back!" Their waiter José said as he opened his arms and gave them a hug. It feels as though it has been forever."
"I know," they both agreed.
"It's just been so crazy at the hospital," Alison said.
"Don't apologize," he waved his hand. "You guys are saving lives! Can I start you off with chips along with the guacamole and queso fundido?"
"Yes, please," Alison said with a smile. "And I'll take a frozen strawberry basil margarita and he will have a lime margarita."
"Got it, amigos! I'll be right back with your drinks and chips."
"Gracias," Alison said making José and Derek laugh.
"Gracias, really?" He asked.
"What?" She joked. "Is it wrong that I like saying some words in Spanish sometimes?"
"No, but not when you only say 'hola,' or 'amigos,' or 'gracias,'" he said laughing.
"How about this? Cállate, perra."
"Did you just tell me to shut up, bitch?" He asked shocked and it was her turn to laugh and nod her head.
"I did," she laughed as José came back with their drinks and another waiter with their chips and dips. Alison's eyes lit up and she rubbed her hands together as she couldn't wait to dig into the delicious snack. They thanked the waiters and started eating and drinking as they looked at the menu.
"So tell me, what's new with you?" He asked as he dipped a chip into the guacamole and ate it while she dipped hers into the queso.
"Nothing really," she shrugged her shoulders. "I've just been busy with work like you are."
"And you've been seeing someone," he pointed out making her cough as the margarita went down the wrong way.
"I'm sorry?"
"Oh, don't think I haven't noticed the hickey's on your neck that you try to cover with makeup. So who he is?"
Shit, shit, shit. Alison was not expecting this. She tried to think quick as he nervously laughed.
"You don't know him," she tried to play off. She hated lying to her person. Betraying him. She wanted to talk to Mark and see his thoughts on how long they should keep them a secret. Derek was about to answer but they were cut off when José came back to write down their order.
Alison got the flautas in chorizo con papas, shredded chicken and shredded beef. Derek asked for the tamales.
"Uh huh," he nodded his head as they began to eat their food and Alison would dip hers in the guacamole. He didn't really think anything of it because Alison was known not to date doctors. "So what's he like?"
"He's pretty great so far, yeah," she smiled as they would continue to eat. "He treats me really well. Plus the sex is pretty great," she said seriously as she drank a sip of her alcoholic beverage and he laughed as he tipped his head back slightly.
"Well if the sex is great then you know you have a good one," he said seriously which made Alison laugh even more. "But really though, when do I get to meet him? It's my duty as your person to meet him."
Alison laughed nervously before she spoke.
"Soon," she teased. "How are things going with Meredith? I'm assuming good since we haven't had one of our Friday night Mexican food dinner dates in a while..."
"They're going really good, yeah," he smiled softly at his best friend. "I'm sorry for not making enough time for you lately. I'll do better."
"Me too."

"I kissed Alex," Addison says to Alison.
"I lied to Derek about Mark. You kissed Alex? I knew it!"
"You know at some point you're going to have to tell Derek. He doesn't do well with secrets," Addison says as they walk closer to their patient's room.
"I know," she let out a sigh. "I just need to talk to Mark first."
"You've been having some pain and bleeding?" George asks their patient as Alison covers her legs.
"She has for weeks," her friend speaks for her.
"It's not a big deal," she corrects her friend.
"I had to drag her in here."
"On our one day off from the restaurant," she points out.
"Just let the doctors check you out. A lot of doctors. Is this all really necessary? Four people for a pap smear?"
"Actually it's not a pap smear. It's a pelvic exam," Addison corrects the friend nicely. "Seeing as we are a teaching hospital, I was going to have one of the interns do the exam. But if you are uncomfortable with that-"
"No, it's okay," the patient smiled at Addison and Alison. "Hope you guys learning something."
"Stevens," Addison called the blonde.
"Alright, Jilly, I'm just going to warm the specula for comfort," she told her as she got on her gloves and Julie nodded. "Just relax your knees."
"You don't have to stay here," Jilly said to her best friend.
"Of course I'm staying. We do everything together so might as well do this," she told her.
"Rachel and I were born two days apart," Jilly explains to the doctors with a smile.
"It's nice that your friendship has stayed so strong," Izzie says.
"Cradle to grave, right?" Rachel says.
"Cradle to grave."
"Just relax this muscle for me," Izzie said. "Your going to feel the specula. Doctor Montgomery and Doctor Anderson?" she called out to the two.
"Go ahead," Addison said to Alison and took the seat that Izzie was sitting at and the specula.
"Okay, uh, Jilly-" Alison said looking up but then she told her to wait.
"He needs to look," she said as her eyes traveled to George and he was confused what was going on.
"I don't have to," he told the patient.
"You said that this was a teaching hospital," Jilly said and Alison realized then that Jilly must have known already how serious this was. "He should learn."
"Doctor O'Malley," Alison said to George and allowed him to take her place and he automatically saw it as he straightened up.
"Okay, what do you have up there?" Rachel asked and Alison assumed that Jilly didn't tell her. "Is she pregnant? Oh my God."
"Am I?" Jilly asked concerned.
"No," Alison said as she looked at her patient.
Alison and Addison were waiting on the biopsy results.
"Have you ever seen a tumor that big?" Alison asked her attending.
"Only once before," Addison said she let out a sad sigh.
"She's so young, damnit," Alison said. "I hate it when they're so young and they have their whole life ahead of them."
*
"Annoying interns, Jim. Jim these are the annoying interns," Mark introduced Meredith and Alex to his patient. "Jim is semi-comatose and has stage three decubitus ulcers."
"Bed sores?" Alex asked and Mark pointed at him.
"Right. So he's going to need to be debrided, have his dressing's changed and repositioned every two hours."
"Every two hours?" Meredith asks the attending.
"By the time we finish we will just have to start again."
"I'm crying on the inside," he commented back.
"Can't the nurses help?" Alex asked.
"They could but I like nurses. They're helpful and smart and already good at their jobs. So as a going away gift to them I'm going to let you hang with Jim while I go do one last rhinoplasty at Seattle Grace. I do like to leave the city a little prettier than when I came."
"Did he just say he was leaving?" Alex asked Meredith. "As in quitting?"
*
"Are you sure it was the right decision putting O'Malley on this case?" Alison asked Addison. "I mean his dad just passed away from cancer."
"I know his dad just passed away but I think it's important for the interns to learn and see everything they can," Addison explained to her resident. "Besides, I think if it was too much for O'Malley that he would say something. Right?"
"Right," Alison said quietly as they walked back into Jilly's room.
"Jilly, I have your test results," Alison said to the blonde as they both looked at the two new people in the room. Alison knew right then that they were Amish.
"I'm sorry, you are?" Addison asked the two adults.
"My parents," Jilly explained.
"It is, it is cancer?" Her father asked Alison and Addison.
"We'll have to perform a radical hysterectomy," Alison explained to them.
"Surgery?" Rachel questions.
"It's okay, Rach," Jilly tries to comfort her best friend.
"How did it get this bad?" Her mother asked the doctors.
"Jilly doesn't want you here, okay?" Rachel told Jilly's parents but Jilly tried to make her stop talking.
"Mom, dad, you should go," Jilly told her parents and Alison felt bad for Jilly and her parents.
"But you are having surgery," her mom pleaded.
"I know but you coming was a mistake," Jilly said. "Go home."
*
"Your quitting?" Meredith asked as he saw him standing at the nurses station.
"As soon as I find the chief and hand him my letter of resignation."
"Why?"
"I hate it here," he lied. "I hate the town and the weather. I hate the people. They're mean and unforgiving."
"Uh huh," Meredith smiled at the plastic surgeon. "They're unforgiving or Derek and Addison are unforgiving?"
"What's your point?" He asked confused.
"What about your contract?" She asked him.
"My non-abiding, verbal agreement with Richard?" He asked. "Yeah, I'm breaking that."
"Well, it's not as though he's going to be around to enforce it," Meredith said.
"What do you mean?" Mark asked.
"Rumor has it he's stepping down."
"The chief?" Meredith nodded her head.
"Whose going to take his place?"
"Why do you care? You're leaving anyway."
*
"Rumor has it you're headed back to New York," Derek asked spotting Mark and walking fast to keep up with him.
"Where did you hear that?" Mark asked.
"Good news travel fast. I was actually going to ask you to scrub in for a peripheral nerve reconstruction. But since it's your last day-"
"It isn't," Mark said. "And I'd love to."
"What?" Derek asked as he furrowed his eyebrows and looked at his former best friend. "I thought-"
"Well, I told your girlfriend I was leaving just to get them to do the nurses job. Besides, I actually have two reasons to stay. Rumor has it there's a race for chief."
"Where did you hear that?"
"Good news travels fast," he fired back. "Especially when you have a chatty girlfriend. Anyway," he patted Derek's shoulder. "See you at the finish line."
"Wait, what's your other reason?" He called out to Mark but Mark kept on walking knowing that Alison probably wouldn't want him to know yet.
Just because he wasn't friends with Mark anymore didn't mean he wasn't at least curious.
*
"How did Jilly let it get this far?" Izzie asked as they were now in the OR for her radical hysterectomy. "It's frustrating, isn't it?"
"It's something that definitely could have been entirely preventable and treatable," Addison said as Alison listened to them as they worked on Jilly. "But you have to be able to catch it."
"Which is why I want to open a clinic. If she had access to a free clinic she probably would have had a pap smear every year. Wouldn't be dealing with infertility and premature menopause at the tender age of twenty-three."
"I know it probably doesn't mean much but if I were an attending I would sign the paper for you, Doctor Bailey," Alison told Miranda and Miranda felt touched.
"Thank you, Doctor Anderson. That means a lot."
"You want to open a free clinic?" O'Malley asked Bailey.
"At Seattle Grace?" Izzie questioned. "Why?"
"Illness caught early means fewer unnecessary surgeries. Meaning unnecessary deaths."
"But I mean why?" Izzie reiterated.
"Because and if I can get the support that I'm looking for-"
"I need suction," Addison said as Alison looked.
"Oh no," Alison said.
"My God," Miranda said.
"What?" Izzie asked.
"The tumor has invaded through the cervix and into the bladder," Alison explained.
"Which means," Miranda began to speak. "She's a stage four."
"We're not doing this operation. We gotta close her up."
Just as they said those words George took off his surgical gown as he left the operating table. Alison knew it was hard on him and she felt bad. If she were being honest she was surprised that he didn't take time off from work - she would have.
"O'Malley?" Addison called for him.
"It's his dad," Izzie explained to them.
*
"Hey, how did it go with your patient?" Meredith asks when Alison got out of surgery. "Izzie told me about it."
"Oh yeah, unfortunately we couldn't do anything for her," Alison said sadly. "It was too much. She waited too long."
"I'm sorry," Meredith said to the blonde resident.
"Yeah, I just feel bad for her parents, you know? I wish they would have gotten more time with each other."
"Well, at least they will be together now. Hey, did you hear?"
"Hear what?" Alison asked.
"McSteamy is leaving. He's going to give Richard his letter of resignation."
"Where did you hear this?"
"From Sloan himself."
*
"Hey," Alison greeted her boyfriend with a hit on the head in the on-call room which caused him to yelp.
"What the hell was that for?"
"What's this I hear about you quitting and possibly leaving?"
"Derek told you," he asked.
"You didn't answer the question."
"It was just a lie to get the interns to do the nurses job and then Meredith opened her big mouth and told Derek who apparently told you now. I promise I would never leave without talking to you first."
"Well, I would hope not," she retorted back. "And it was actually Meredith who told me."
"Besides why would I leave when I have you and a chance to be chief of this hospital?"
"Chief? Is Richard leaving or something?"
"You didn't hear? Yeah, apparently he's retiring."
"Well, I can tell you one thing, Derek will be pissed."
"Why?" He asked amused.
"Because Richard verbally offered him the position for when he would retire. Seems like he forgot that. Speaking of Derek, I wanted to ask you what you thought about telling Derek soon?"
"What? Why?" He asked freaking out.
"Why not? He's my best friend! And I hate having to lie to him every time he asks a question about who I'm seeing. I feel like now I'm dirty mistress and I hate it," she said pacing as she stood up and he stopped her by putting his hands on her arms as she looked at him.
"Okay, I promise we can tell him soon," he said feeling bad for his girlfriend. "I can promise you one thing though that he's not going to be happy."
"As long as he knows. That's all I ask," she said as she stood on her tip toes to kiss him.

"I was right," Cristina said to Burke as they were now, sitting at their kitchen table. "I swear I really believe what I did was right. I don't want you to forgive me. Frankly," she said leaning back in her chair. "I find it patronizing if you did because while I know I was right, you think I'm wrong. Which doesn't matter because I'm in this. I'm in this for the long haul and I'm in this to finish the race. So, if that means I don't win this one, then fine. I don't win. You win. I'm talking. See, I'm talking first, you win."
"Marry me," Burke said.
*
Callie opened the door as George walked through in a rush.
"I don't want to waste another minute," George said.
"I can't have sex with you again," Callie finally spoke up, nervous where this was going to go. "Enough with the sex."
"Since my dad died, I feel like someone ripped out my stomach and filled the hole with asphalt. I laugh every time I remember I'm never going to talk to him again because it just sounds like the stupidest thing I ever heard. I can't believe it's real. But, every time I look at you, I feel better. It shocks me. It knocks my wind out but it's true. I don't have to have sex with you. I just have to look at you from across the room and even that, any piece of you, hopefully all of you - that would be the best thing. Because I love you," he admitted to Callie as he then got down on one knee.
"Marry me?" He asked looking up at her. "Will you marry me?"

"Hey," Alison greeted her younger brother, James, over FaceTime. "How have you and Sarah been?"
"We've been good," he let out a laugh as he took a sip of his beer. "Just busy. Sarah has been adjusting to the new year of teaching. How have you been?"
Sarah was a freshman high school teacher for history. Alison was not jealous of her job at all but she gave Sarah credit because she rocked it. Sarah taught at the middle school that was on the military base as it went from seventh grade to ninth grade. James was in the Marines and they were stationed at Camp Pendleton in California.
"I'm good, crazy busy. Aw, how is she liking it this year?"
"She said the kids are actually pretty good so far," he shrugged his shoulders. "So I know you were dating that lawyer guy for a few months but are you seeing anyone else?" He asked his older sister and she laughed nervously as she rubbed the back of her neck. Mainly because she wasn't sure how he would react.
"I am seeing someone actually, he's my boyfriend now."
"Really?" James' eyes lit up as he was happy for his sister. He knew that her last relationship wasn't that great. "Whose the guy?"
"Mark," she murmured as she drank her hot chocolate to warm her cold hands and he nodded his head.
"What does he do?"
"He's actually a plastic surgeon."
"That's cool," he said but then realization dawned on him. "Wait he's not Derek's Mark is he?"
Since Derek and Alison were best friends he has gone on vacations with their family and he would come to their homes for holiday's.
"Maybeeee," she said. "Maybe not."
"Alison Marie! Be straight with me."
"Oh you used the middle name on me," she teased trying to get him to forget but it didn't work.
"It is him, isn't it?" He asked as he narrowed her eyes.
"Yes, okay, yes! Don't give me that look, James! I'm the older sibling here."
"Just because you are the older sibling doesn't mean anything," he retorted. "Look, all I'm saying is that I want you to be careful because I love and care about you is all."
"I know and I appreciate that. Believe me I already told Mark that I don't like cheaters and I told him what I would do if he cheated on me."
"That's my sister," he smiled at her as he leaned forward on his kitchen counter. "So, I'm assuming Derek doesn't know?"
"No," she shakes a head and moving her long hair to one side. "I know you are close to him so I would appreciate it if you didn't say anything. We're still seeing where this is going. It's only been a month."
"I get it. But just know someone is going to get hurt during this."
"I know," she let out a breath. "Derek actually asked if I was seeing someone last night and it was my chance to tell him but I chickened out."
"Just talk with Mark. Figure things out. I don't want you to feel like your someone's secret when you can be openly dating them. All I care about is that he treats you the way you deserve. I don't care about his past but if he's changed then I say great. Hey, I actually called you because I wanted to tell you something," he said and she noticed a change in him physically and mentally.
"Oh yeah? What's going on? Everything okay?"
"I'm being deployed to Afghanistan, Ali."
And just like that her whole world turned upside down. He went onto explain to her that it wouldn't until the end of the month that he was leaving but Alison didn't hear any of that. Her younger brother was being deployed for seven months.
Sometimes the unexpected comes to us when we least expect it. It throws us off through a loop and affects us in more ways than we could ever imagine. The unexpected is uncertain. It changes everything.

hi friends! what did you think of the chapter and Ali's younger brother unexpected news?
I'm so excited for the next few chapters because you guys have no idea what I have planned! Is anyone else's wattpad on the website messing up? Mine is. Like the logging in button, my writing button and pretty much every button I can think of is faded and not allowing me to click on it. It's so frustrating because I'll log out and log back in and disconnect my internet but nothing helps. Any ideas how to fix this if you are experiencing the same problem?
Also my books are on a site called novelhd with out my permission and the person who published them is making money off of it. Any idea how to report it to get them off? So annoying!
