Han Solo part one

Have you ever realized how good things are and wondered when you might wake up and wonder when something bad might happen?  Because there is no possible way that something this good could stay around for a while.  It's like when you're angry at someone and you always say that you'll sleep on the couch.  You wonder what might happen because something this good couldn't possibly be good for long.

-

Alison woke up, instantly feeling as though she had to throw up.  She could feel the bile rising and once she got to the bathroom sink, she emptied everything, not even making it to the toilet.  She could feel the burning sensation in the back of her throat that she always felt whenever she threw up and she hated it.  Grabbing her tooth brush she put some Crest whitening toothpaste on and brushed her teeth, wanting to get the icky taste out of her mouth.

"Hey, you okay?" Mark asked his girlfriend as he rubbed the sleep from his eyes.

"I'm fine," she told him as she looked at him through the mirror as she brushed her teeth.

"I thought I heard you throwing up?" He asked, furrowing his eyebrows.

"I did," she nodded her head as she spit into the sink. "But I'm all better now."

"You sure? Because you've been throwing up for the past few weeks..."

"Yeah," she gave him a strained smile and rushed out of the bathroom. "I'll meet you at work, alright? I love you!"

"What the hell just happened?" Mark asked to himself.

*

"I'm telling you Derek, it was the oddest behavior I've ever seen from Alison," Mark told his best friend as they walked in with each other.

"She could just be sick?" He questioned.

"You don't think it's an eating disorder do you?  I mean with bulimia people throw up with that..."

"No," Derek shook his head.  "Definitely not.  You said it's been recent right?"

"Yeah."

"Maybe she's not feeling good or on her period?  I know she's thrown up before when it's been her time of the month."

"Why do you know all of this about my girlfriend?"

"This was all before you started dating her.  I still can't believe you guys have been dating a year.  What do you have planned for her?"

"I have to do something?"

Derek gave his best friend a deadpanned look and Mark smiled.

"I'm joking.  I'm taking her to The Edgewater Hotel and giving her this," he told his best friend as he pulled out a small black leather box that read ALEXANDER SPARKS.

"For me?  Oh you shouldn't have," Derek joked as Mark shook his head.

Derek opened the box and inside was a beautiful engagement ring.  He knew that today was about his best friends happiness but in that moment all he could think of was Meredith.  Why could he only think of Meredith when he was with Rose?

It was beautiful.  It was a dainty moissanite engagement ring featuring a 2.00ct round Forever One moissanite four prong set in the center with a beautiful claw finish.  Dazzling round diamonds are set underneath the center stone in the cathedral style sitting with petite 1.50mm micro pave set diamond band going three quarters of the way down the shank.  The moissanite was super dainty and elegant with diamond hidden halo engagement ring, which was perfect for Alison, given her profession.

"Not for you, it's for Alison!  So?" Mark asked as he looked at his best friend while he just stared at the engagement ring.  "What do you think?  Think she will love it?"

"Oh," Derek snapped out of his own selfish thoughts and gave him a smile and patted his back.  "Yeah.  She will love it.  Any idea how you are going to propose?"

"I'm taking her to a hotel I don't think she's been to before called The Edgewater.  We have a full panoramic bay view room that has a fireplace, a King sized bed.  It's beautiful.  I was going to take her out to a restaurant then walk around the bay.  Not sure when I'll ask her though."

"Sounds nice," Derek nodded his head, shocked that his best friend actually thought this all through but then a thought struck him.  "Just don't ask her to marry you during sex."

"You seriously think I would do that?" Mark asked offended.  "The old Mark maybe.  But me now?  No way," he shakes his head.  "Alison deserves better than that."

*

"Doctor Anderson," Izzie came up to the blonde peds surgeon after she had been asking numerous people where she was.

Before Izzie came in, her sister-in-law, Katie, had just sent her a text of a picture of her new niece, named Aubrey Skye.  She was born December tenth and weighed eight pounds seven ounces.  She was the cutest little thing and was now four months old and had Alison wrapped around her little finger.

"Yes, Stevens?" She asked, not looking up from her work as Izzie began to speak.

"I'm sorry.  I'm sorry I got you into that mess and I'm sorry for my behavior yesterday.  And I'm sorry for whatever Alex said to you.  I guess the reason why I came to you though is because besides Doctor Montgomery, you are the best.  I know I probably lost my chance at working in peds a long time ago but I just thought you should know that because I don't feel like you get told that enough.  Women should be supporting women and I've been terrible at that lately and I want to change.  So yeah, that's all I wanted to say," she told the blonde and began to walk away when Alison stopped her.

"Izzie, wait-" Alison began and the blonde resident turned around to face the person she really did admire.  "I forgive you.  Thank you," she smiled at her and Izzie gave her a smile back.  "I'll let you work with me for the next couple weeks if you want on one condition."

"What's that?" She asked confused but felt the rush of excitement at the same time.

It had been so long since she had worked on the peds floor and she was afraid she might get a little rusty.

"I need your help with something."

*

"Hey uh, page Doctor Anderson instead of Doctor Kenley and make sure he doesn't hear about this," Mark tells George and he nods his head in understanding.

Minutes later Alison came down as she was trying to catch her breath.

"Why do you act like you were just in a track race?" Mark asked his girlfriend.

"Because I was trying to escape Doctor Henley," she said with wide eyes.  "Do you know how hard it is to escape him when he is literally everywhere you are trying to run from?"

"O'Malley get her some water," Mark told the intern and she shook her head at George.

"It's okay, Georgie," she smiles slightly at him.  "I'll get it really quick," she said going to the nearest water fountain and drinking some before returning.

He hated it whenever Cristina called him Georgie because he always felt like she was making fun of him while she called him that.  But with Alison - it was okay.  She always did it in a soft, caring tone.  One that made him feel wanted.  Like a friend.  Not her personal punching bag.

"Better?" Mark asks her concerned and she nods her head.

"Much."

"Now do you want to explain to me what's going on?" He asked as he massaged her neck slightly and she glanced at him.

"He's just in one of his moods again," she rolled her eyes.  "I'd rather not be around him when he gets like that.  Besides, you said he couldn't know about whatever is happening.  What is happening?"

Mark had a triumphant grin on his face and he knew that this would make Alison's day.

"Come with me," he held her hand until they got to the patient's room and became professional's again.  "Doctor Anderson, you can go in."

Alison was a little hesitant.  She knew that whatever was behind that door was big.  Probably bigger than anything she had done in the last month and she was right.  When she opened the door she saw a boy who looked scared, covered in cement.

"Is this who you were waiting on?" One of the paramedics asked Mark and he nodded his head.

"Yeah, everyone's here now."

Holy shit.

*

"I'm sorry but that's not what we need to look out for the most," Alison told all the doctors who fought with her reasoning.  "I'm with Mark.  The biggest thing is chemical burns."

Erica didn't like her answer though and began to argue with her.

"Who the hell do you think you are?  Your opinion doesn't matter here.  The only reason Mark brought you on this case is because you're his girlfriend."

"What did you just say?" Mark said to Erica with an attitude and Alison knew he was pissed because of the vein that was slightly popping out of his bicep.  "Don't you ever disrespect Alison again!"

"She's just as bad as Yang if not worse," Erica continued.

"Since when is my relationship even a topic about this case when it has no relation to the patient?  You're a professional surgeon, Hahn.  Start acting like one," Alison reprimanded the woman.

"Now hold up," Callie butted in and stuck up for Erica.

"My God," Richard said as he looked at the patient covered in cement and looked at the paramedics.  "What is everyone doing standing around here?"

"This is what your guys told us to do," a paramedic guy answered with his arms crossed.

"And exactly where are my guys?" He asked but then spotted them once he heard yelling and went to open up the door to their room.

"Why is the patient in there," Richard pointed to the other side of the door.  "And all of you are in here?" Richard asked the group.

"Doctor Torres is worried about the limbs," Cristina spoke up for the group as they all stopped talking now.  "Doctor Bailey is worried about abdominal crush injuries.  Doctor Sloan and Doctor Anderson feels the third degree burns should take the first look and Doctor Hahn feels the heart and lung issues are going to kill him before we get to any of this."

"In other words -" Richard began but was cut off by Yang.

"No one can agree on where to start," she finished and everyone began arguing again.

Cristina began writing on the white board as Callie began to start talking to Richard.

"The cement is contracting and if I don't get in there he could lose both of his legs and his right arm," Callie says to Richard with her arms crossed.

"He can live without a leg, I'd like to see him live without a liver," Miranda said sarcastically.

"So, we're saying we'd prefer him to suffer a long, slow, painful death as the alkaline and cement continues to burn through his skin?" Mark asks.

"Cement can damage the body with alkaline burns.  We all know that and we also know how harmful this can be to the body.  The burns need to be the first thing we focus on to apply a neutralizer on them.  We don't want Andrew having even far worse burns than third degree that can lead to scarring that could require skin grafts or amputations," Alison tells Richard.

"You sure you don't want to switch to plastics?" Mark asks amazed at his girlfriend and she smiles at him but Erica rolls her eyes and has a bitchy attitude.

"You can't just start chipping away.  Once his circulation opens up it builds up toxins and will stop his heart.  Not to mention rhabdomyolysis."

"You can treat that rhabdomyolysis," Cristina jumped in.

"Yang let us work," Erica yelled at the resident and Alison rolled her eyes at Erica's awful behavior.

Not only was Erica being extremely disrespectful to Alison and Mark but to Cristina as well when the door opened and George walked through with a binder.

"Chief I found this one article.  It doesn't say a lot but it talks about people encased in cement are found at the bottom of a river."

"You two are so wrong," Erica yelled at Mark and Alison pointing her finger at them.

"We're so wrong?" Mark asked.

"You are.  Wrong," Callie said getting involved and Alison wished that their friend would shut up.

"You two are together are on this?" Mark yelled back.

"Will everyone please just shut up!" Alison yelled at the group as they were all giving her a headache and she rubbed her temples.

"Thank you, Alison," Richard told the fellow.

"Where the hell do you think you can get away with telling me to shut up?" Erica said not giving up.

"Everyone stand down," Richard yelled, furious.  "We are fighting the clock people.  It took one hour for the kids to call 911.  It took three hours for search and rescue to get this guy out of the cement.  That gives us less than four to six hours to get him out of the cement and into the OR before he is dead.  Now we are fighting one hell of a clock.  Every minute counts.  We work as a team or that man dies.  Do you understand?"

"Yes sir," everyone answered to him.

"Where do you want me, chief?" George asked him.

"Go find Grey and be her intern for the day.  Already have too many bodies in here," he told George and Alison caught the look of disappointment on George's face as he left.

"What's the patient's name?" Richard asked.

"Andrew Langston," Cristina told the chief.

"Okay, let's go save his life."

*

The group started working on Andrew along with the paramedics.

"What's that?" Andrew asked Mark as Alison worked with the rest of the group to get the cement off of him.  She used a demolition hammer to help break it up since the concrete was so thick and others used a regular hammer.

"We're putting vinegar on your flesh to help minimize the burns inside your skin caused by the cement," he told their patient.

"Burn from the inside out?" The patient questioned as another chunk of cement was removed from his hand.

"I'm dying," the patient started freaking out as he realized how serious his injuries could be.  "I'm dying, aren't I?"

"H-hey, Andrew," Miranda tried calming down the patient as she listened to his heart beat.  "That word is not allowed in here.  We are banning that word from your vocabulary."

"Can you move your fingers?" Erica asked Andrew and he did.  "That's very good."

"I'm not usually this dumb," he explained to the group of doctors.  "Most people think I'm pretty smart.  Made the dean's list, I tutor, I'm not usually the guy whose dumb enough to jump into a tub of cement for a girl."

"Wait," Callie said as she was putting the pieces together as Mark and Alison shared a look with each other.  "Not the girl you came in with?"

Andrew nodded his head and Callie didn't like that as she raised her eyebrows, shocked.  So was Alison.

"You did this for her?" Callie asked.

"Lola," he told Callie.  "The guys dared me.  She was watching," he explained and they removed another chunk of cement from his leg.  "She was watching," he explained as he started to get emotional and started wincing and made grunting noises from his leg and Callie moved to check on it.  "Now, not only is she totally unimpressed.  After I'm gone she'll remember me forever as the idiot who was dumb enough to jump into a tub of cement.  People read stories about my idiocy and forward them to their friends.  I'm gonna die as a bad email forward," he said wincing.

"Hey, we all mess up," Miranda told the patient.

Alison got another chunk off of his arm and put it on the ground as they continued working.

"I'm the guy who died in a block of cement trying to impress a girl," he said, scoffing and laughed lightly.  "Like Han Solo," as Alison and Miranda looked at him.  "In Star Wars?  He was encased in carbonite."

*

"Hey," Lexie opened up the door and noticed George sitting looking at papers and books.  "Have you seen Cristina?  Because I'm doing everything know.  Doing everything I'm supposed to do but if she sees me doing nothing I'm not in the mood to get yelled at."

"She's in with the cement boy," George comments as he looks back at his papers.

"There's a cement boy?" Lexie exclaims with excitement.

"Don't bother," George yells back in frustration at the chief.  "They don't need interns.  They don't want interns in there.  Interns are in the way!"

"Two minutes," Lexie pulls up a chair and sits down as George looks at her.  "Two minutes of complaining between me and you and no one has to know."

"I have all this power," he exclaims frustrated.  "Supposedly.  I supposedly have all this power of being the chief's intern," George explains to Lexie as he stands up and uses his hands to talk as well.  "But there's a cement boy and I am stuck in here running labs and researching the effects of cement from the body in hopes that somebody asks me a question.  I'm not in with the cement boy because even though I have all this power I can't use it because it's not real power."

"It's fake power?" Lexie asks, appalled as she scrunches up her nose.

"Fake power!  I can go into the chief's office.  Whatever I want.  You know what he has in there?  Files.  Confidential files on every resident in this hospital and I'm just allowed in.  He's not worried because he knows that I know that I don't have any real power.  I don't have the power to look at those files."

"Would it make you feel better if you could look at them?" Lexie asked him.

"You know what would make me feel better?" George asked her.  "It would make me feel better if I could feel like there was a reason for this.  That there was a point."

*

"Oh God," Andrew says, shaking his head.  "My poor, poor parents.  How will they face anyone at the funeral?"

"Okay Andrew, you're gonna make a lot of mistakes in life but mistakes are just pieces.  Like this is a foolish piece but you know it's just a piece.  You need to proud of the whole picture.  The whole picture defines you.  Not just one piece," Miranda tells him and he starts to get emotional.

"I'm a loser.  A loser.  A loser," he says as the monitors start showing accelerating.

"Andrew, hey, listen to me.   Han Solo is not a loser.  That is not what Han Solo is known for," Alison told Andrew.  "Any Star Wars fan would know that.  He left Corellia, left the Empire because of its tyrannical organization, met Chewbacca and they have possibly the greatest partnership and friendship in the franchise, got the Millennium Falcon not once but twice.  He found family, joined the Rebellion, fell in love with Leia and they saved the galaxy.  Sure he encased in carbonite, but he escapes it along with escaping Jaba the Hutt.  Not only that but he always has hope and optimism, knowing everything will be okay in the end and finally recognizes that there's good in him.  The carbonite was just a piece.  Okay?" She asked as she let out a breath and his heart rate went back to normal and realized that all the surgeons were looking at him and Mark with raised eyebrows.  "What?  I had two younger brothers growing up.  What do you think I did?  It's science fiction!"

"Star Wars is my favorite so I'm not complaining," Miranda said as she smiled at the young ped's surgeon.

"That was hot," Mark commented as he stared at his girlfriend and she giggled quietly and then looked at Andrew who looked at her shocked.

"So there you have it.  Han Solo is the best," she says and the others shrug after giving her a blank stare.

"Thanks Doctor Anderson," he said squinting his eyes to read her white coat and she smiled at him.

"Call me Alison and you're welcome," she told him.

"Alright, it's at twenty centimeters.  Inflate the balloon, Yang," Erica told the resident.

"I am," she told the attending.

"Alright so then inflate it more."

"Every time they loosen another piece of concrete this leg swells even more," Callie told the group.  "His pressure is eighteen."

"Does he have a pulse with that?" Erica asked the orthopedic and walked over to her.

They made some kind of eye contact and Mark notices.

"I always did enjoy a good game of twister," Mark comments and Alison slaps his shoulder, giving him a look.

"Yang, do not sew that in," Erica chastises the resident and Alison rolls her eyes.  She didn't understand why Erica treated Cristina this awful.  It reminded her of the fraternities and the hazing rituals they would do at colleges.  "Hold it.  I will check your work when I'm done."

Richard was watching everything and didn't like what he was seeing.  That much Alison could tell by the look on his face.

"Chief, I gotta do a fasciotomy," Callie tells him.

"What?" Andrew asks confused.  "A what?"

"We gotta relieve the pressure in your leg or you could lose the entire leg," Richard explains to Andrew as Callie got ready to cut.  "Don't worry.  Probably won't feel a thing."  Alison held his hand as Callie cut.

*

"Whose there?" Lexie whispered shouted as she heard the door open.

"George O'Malley," he whispered.  "I was paged to the supply closet.

"Are you alone?"

"Lexie?" He asked confused as he recognized the voice and walked toward her.

"Um, remember when I said I wasn't a thief?  I think maybe I am," she said as she sat on the floor with pages of files surrounding her.

"Alexandra Caroline Grey," George said shocked and got to the floor fast to pick up all of the papers.

"I couldn't help it.  I had to know and then once I knew, I knew."

"We have to get these back to the chief's office right now," George replied, freaking out.

"It doesn't matter now, I know.  I read them all.  I tried to stop reading but I couldn't and I have a photographic memory which is how I got through Harvard Medical with my photographic memory and I read all the files and the information and it's now burned into my brain.  I read your file," she exclaims.

"No," he tells her freaking out as he picks up more papers.  "I don't want to know."

"George you failed the intern exam by one point.  One point," she tells him and his eyes widened."

*

The surgeons were taking breaks in-between and watched the paramedics as they continued getting the cement off Andrew while they sipped on their water.  Alison especially felt like she needed it and took a restroom break as well as all the surgeons had been going at this for what seemed like forever.

"The OR is booked and standing by," Callie told the group as Alison was also munching on her pretzels.

"Doctor Bailey, what is it?" Cristina asked the resident as she noticed her looking for something.

"Something," Miranda started out.  "We're missing something.  We're forgetting something.  Compartment syndrome.  Compression.  Fluid balance.  Electrolytes.  What is it?" She drops her cup of water and everyone looks at her as Cristina turns to her.  "His bladder.  We've been hydrating him and hydrating him for over four hours now."

"I'll get a catheter in him quick," Erica says.

"His bladder is going to explode," Miranda says and everyone rushes.
