Chapter Thirteen

"Hey!"

It didn't take long for the four of them to track down Bellamy. Or to rephrase, it didn't take long for Clarke to track down Bellamy.

"Where is it?"

They were all angry with Bellamy Blake at that very second, but it seemed Clarke was the most furious. And this only spurred her on to work harder; finding his trail in mere minutes.

"Hey princess, you taking a walk in the woods?"

Avery only just caught up to Clarke's quick pace, leaning against a tree to catch her breath as the other girl confronted Bellamy. He was yet to notice Avery's presence yet, but if he had, he would've dropped the oblivious act much sooner.

"They're getting ready to kill three hundred people up there to save oxygen. I guarantee it won't be Council members. It'll be working people. Your people.

It was difficult for him to act like he didn't know the radio Clarke was referring to. His whole body had stiffened; regret and upset and frustration in himself had taken over his body as he realised all of the deaths he may have indirectly caused.

"Bellamy," Finn had arrived then, only having lagged behind because he was helping Raven along. He delivered a harsh shove to Bellamy's chest. "Where's the radio?"

"I have no idea what you're talking about." Bellamy threw back stubbornly, pushing Finn in return.

"Bullshit." Avery spat at him. "I watched you take it from the Pod."

Bellamy whirled on her then, the look of fury in his eyes genuinely scaring her. But she was too stubborn to back off. Bellamy was pissed off but so was she.

"Avery, I swear to god-"

"-Bellamy Blake?"

Raven interrupted Bellamy's rant with the calm question of his name. She was much less angry than Avery was anticipating, and the girl watched cautiously as Raven's lips upturned in an amused smirk.

"They're looking everywhere for you."

"Shut up." Bellamy fired back, his hands clenching into fists.

"What? Don't want them to know you shot the Chancellor?" Avery challenged, revelling in how Bellamy's face dropped at the fact she had told his secret.

"That's why you took the wristbands." Clarke realised aloud, not missing the way Bellamy's jaw clenched at the words explaining his actions. "Needed everyone to think we were dead."

"And all that 'whatever the hell we want'? You were just saving your own skin."

Bellamy lacked a reply, instead turning swiftly away from them all and continuing to walk back towards camp. Avery wasn't sure what he was thinking, but there was no way he could be naïve enough to think the news wouldn't spread.

"Hey shooter!"

There was the angry Raven that Avery expected and adored.

"Where's my radio?"

"Get out of my way." Bellamy fired back, trying to move past the girl.

"Where is it?"

Bellamy stopped in front of Raven, who was glaring back at him stubbornly, challenging him to push past her. He didn't take that challenge. But he did meet her with a harsh threat.

"I should've killed you when I had the chance."

"Like I would've let you do that." Avery interjected, earning a scoff from Bellamy who narrowed his eyes in her direction.

Raven looked between the two, clearly not fearing Bellamy. "Well I'm right here." She dared him.

In less than a moment, Bellamy had seized Raven by the jacket, shoving her up against a tree and pressing her against it with a hand to her throat. Avery went to go for the knife sticking out from where it was attached to his belt, but Raven had got there first; pointing it in his direction.

"Where's my radio?"

"Okay stop it." Clarke demanded with a sigh, talking as though she was addressing two children who were arguing over stolen coloured pencils, not radios.

It took Bellamy a second to drop his grip on Raven, strolling away and turning back to say, "Jaha deserved to die, you all know it."

Avery had taken Bellamy's knife from Raven's grasp, her right hand holding it and dragging the blade across the bark of the tree in the shape of a smiley face, whilst her left hand steadied her balance. She let out a scoff at his attempt of defending himself.

"I don't think anyone's disagreeing with that, Bellamy." Avery pointed out. "I don't know about anyone else, but I'm just pissed off that you're ruining shit for the rest of us. Like, taking the radio, seriously?"

Bellamy tilted his head questioningly, clearly wondering why she cared about contacting the Ark when she didn't have anyone up there to talk to. Avery wasn't entirely sure how he even knew this. Maybe it was just obvious.

"People have family up on the Ark, Bellamy. They deserve to talk to them."

"Yeah, Jaha's not my favourite person either," Raven added, shooting a look towards Avery. "But he isn't dead."

Ugh, that's a shame.

"What?"

"You're a lousy shot." She answered simply.

"Bellamy, don't you see what this means?" Clarke questioned, taking a few steps towards the boy. "You're not a murderer. You always did what you had to do to protect your sister."

Raven and Avery shared a glance, both disagreeing with Clarke that Bellamy killing Jaha was protecting Octavia. Octavia was smart enough to handle Earth without him. Sure, Avery could understand that Bellamy would want to go with her, but he didn't need to protect her.

"And you can do it again, by protecting three hundred of your people. Where's the radio?"

Bellamy's eyes had wandered across Clarke's face, Finn's, and Raven's. When they landed on Avery, the girl wondered if the regret in his eyes was not only about the radio, but also the fact he had failed to protect Murphy too.

"It's too late."

Bellamy's words made it seem like they were condemned to death, but Clarke was more optimistic than that. He had explained where he threw the radio, and so the girl began to bark out orders that Avery actually didn't mind following.

As the others went to the river to look for where Bellamy had carelessly hurled the radio, Avery returned to camp to lure more volunteers into helping scour for the device. And to see Monty.

She managed to rope several people into their plan, who each brought a few friends with them, and so the girl found herself successful. She was just about to head to the river herself when, "Hey! Avery!"

The girl's heart was lifted by the hopeful voice calling out her name, and all she saw was a flash of dark hair before she was enveloped in an enthusiastic hug. Monty lifted her off the ground as he embraced her tightly; the girl happily - but admittedly confused - returning it.

Monty let out a breathy laugh into her hair and Avery could feel the way her skin was hot in every place he was holding her. He didn't seem to notice her suddenly flustered state, barely thinking about the fact they hadn't hugged before.

But it was all she could think about.

She would've remembered - as clear as day - if she had ever felt before the feeling of warmth and comfort Monty was bringing her right now. She was never going to forget it, that's for sure. And she was definitely going to try and get another hug at some point.

"What was that for?" She rushed out in one breath, finding it hard to make eye contact with him.

"You disappeared!" He exclaimed in frustration, although it was clear he wasn't really angry with her; more relieved she was okay. "You were missing all night, where did you go?"

His concern was alike to that of a boyfriend, and so Avery decided to tease him with a pet name she knew would make him blush. She waved a dismissive hand, making the boy raise his eyebrows.

"Relax, babe."

Monty opened his mouth to reply but shut it immediately again, his cheeks flushing with colour as his brain processed what she had said. She only smiled sweetly at him, enjoying the way he struggled for a reply. When he said nothing for an uncomfortable amount of time, Avery decided to put him out of his misery and actually answer his question.

"Octavia and I had a suspicion that Bellamy was going to go look for the Pod so we followed him last night. Then, she went back to camp and I confronted him when he found it." She shrugged as if it was nothing, as if she didn't trek through the forest in the middle of the night. "He ripped out this radio from the Pod then took off. I stuck around cause there was someone in there."

"Someone came down from the Ark?"

Avery nodded to confirm. "Raven Reyes. She's a Zero-G mechan-"

"-Mechanic, I know." Monty finished the sentence, his eyes shining with a clear admiration for the girl who Avery didn't know he had heard of. "Sinclair and Wick mentioned her a few times."

"Sinclair and Wick?" She asked gently.

Monty had offhandedly mentioned Sinclair a couple of times in their conversations but Avery had never before gotten the chance to ask who he was. As for Wick, Avery was aware he was an engineer back up on the Ark; distinctly remembering that when she met Raven, she and Wick had just finished up some petty argument between them.

"Sinclair recruited me for engineering. I worked with Wick for a little while when I did a bit of training." Monty shrugged, passing off his young recruitment into engineering as if it wasn't impressive. "Raven knew them both. She's a very impressive mechanic apparently."

"She's a great girl. She drew me this map of Ark Station Medical to try and help me steal that medicine." Avery shook her head with a slight smile, with Monty watching her fondly. "She didn't even know me, but she still helped."

"Why wouldn't she?"

Avery simply shrugged at the question, not wanting to admit that she simply wasn't used to having people there to help her.

When everyone finally returned from the river, Avery was filled in on the fact the radio was completely drenched in water, and would need about half a day just to dry out the components. However, Raven had already come up with the idea of letting off flares to signal they were alive on Earth. After all, they didn't need to talk to the Ark just yet; they just needed them to know they were still alive.

The person Avery first wanted to talk to, surprisingly, wasn't Raven. It was Finn.

She weaved her way across camp, watching as the boy helped another Delinquent carry a control panel towards the Dropship. She smoothly intervened, taking the unfamiliar boy's position so she could delve into conversation with Finn.

And by conversation she really meant that she'd be lecturing the boy, which when she thought about it, was becoming a pattern. She had already done so in convincing him to help save Jasper.

"You need to tell Raven." She said simply, with no greeting or niceties and without looking away from Raven for a second. The girl was with Clarke; a sight that made her cringe with the awkwardness of it. "You know she deserves that, at the least."

"What?"

Finn questioned dumbly, unable to realise she was even addressing him because her eyes were glued to somewhere across camp, rather than his eyes. She had assumed - wrongly - that he was a little smarter than this.

"Listen, you know I met Raven on the Ark. She, uh," Avery debated on whether to tell Finn what it was about, but ultimately decided against it. "She helped me with something."

She waved a dismissive hand and Finn seemed to understand her desire for secrecy, nodding slowly. He was watching her carefully, guilt clearly gnawing away at his heart already.

"She really, really loves you Finn. You are the most important person in the world to her, and you can't just act like you haven't got feelings for Clarke."

Finn went to interrupt her, but Avery held up her hand and his mouth opened and closed without a sound coming out. It almost made her laugh.

"She deserves to know."

And in the back of her mind, Avery also knew that Clarke deserved to know too.

"You're right." Finn said with a sigh.

Avery's smile widened into a smirk, and she tilted her head as she looked at the boy. "Of course I am."

"You're humble too." He replied teasingly.

She didn't respond verbally, instead she only smiled; still a little sour from the belief he was a gross person for lying to both Raven and Clarke. But Avery knew she'd be a fool to deny what Finn was sarcastically implying.

They set down the control panel on the doorstep of the Dropship, and Avery quickly left Finn to trek back across camp towards Raven. Even though she was head over heels for Monty, she was definitely more than a little bit attracted to Raven.

But who wasn't?

Raven was still talking to Clarke, seemingly reassuring her on their idea of setting off flares. Avery had in hand two bottles of water for each of the girls, who she was pretty sure were working harder than anyone else in the camp.

"I've never seen anyone love someone the way she loves you." Raven told Clarke genuinely, taking the bottle from Avery's outstretched hand. "You know that, right?"

They're talking about Abby.

"I did." Clarke's eyes settled on Avery and hardened. "It's complicated."

She took the bottle from the girl, before letting out a scoff that she was obviously trying to hold in.

"Of course you're here."

The spite in Clarke's voice made Avery momentarily speechless. She knew she was cruel to Clarke - far too cruel for far too long - but lately it had faded. And in that one sentence, all of their past distaste for one another had resurfaced.

Raven had sensed the tense atmosphere hanging in the air, choosing to back away and leave the two girls to it. Avery didn't even know what she was being left to.

"What's that supposed to mean?" Avery question carefully, her tone edging on defensiveness.

"It means, I'm not surprised you've showed up when we're talking about my mom. I've never seen anyone so resentful towards someone and not understand why. What could've she have done that was so bad for you?"

Clarke was speaking louder and louder, and Avery felt herself drawing smaller and smaller into herself in an attempt to disappear. She did not want to talk about that with everyone so close around them, and especially not with Clarke. But the way the blonde girl was looking at her told her she wasn't going to get away with saying nothing.

Sure, in theory Avery could walk away as Clarke called after her, shaming her for not answering her question. But Avery was too proud for that; cared too much about how people saw her. And if everyone just watched her walk away in silence, she couldn't handle it.

"It's none of your business." She replied wobbly, although she was aiming for confidence in her tone.

"Well it is, cause it's my mom."

Avery knew Clarke would later regret snapping at her so cruelly. She disliked the girl, but also knew that she'd never usually go about something in the way she was confronting Avery at that moment.

She finally muttered the reasoning behind her vendetta against the older Griffin, "She got my father killed.", and Clarke was starting to wish she hadn't asked that question.

The upset in Avery's voice made Clarke momentarily speechless. And then the blonde realised something really upsetting: it wasn't the only time Abby had done that to someone.

"I guess she's got a habit of doing that to people."

They set off the flares later than night in hopes the Ark would recognise they were still alive and refrain from killing three hundred people to save oxygen. Little did they know, their signal came far too late.
