Chapter Eighteen
A/n: Trigger warning, mentions of anorexia.
Over the next few days, Alexa and Isabelle's warning kept repeating itself in my head. If you tell Aidan you're his mystery girl, these pictures will be leaked to the whole school. I tried to shake those words out of my mind, but they kept coming back like a boomerang. The few years that I was anorexic were some of the worst years of my life. I can remember looking at myself in the mirror and hearing voices in my head telling me that I needed to lose weight, and it got to the point where I would stop eating completely.
Then one day, I collapsed in school. And they had to call an ambulance to take me to the hospital. I had to spend a few weeks in the hospital because of how underweight I was. And a year after that, I was healthy again, and I was doing okay. But then my parents left me, and I had to start the cycle of pain all over again. At school, the warnings became worse. During passing period, I found a warning in my locker that was dead roses along with a note that said, "You have been warned,"
I thought after one warning, that would be the end of it. But unfortunately, it wasn't. In Geometry, I found a note in my bag that said, "Watch your back," and most shockingly of all, a photo of me in eighth grade when my anorexia became worse. At that point, I just wanted to go home. "Serena, Aidan will not stop until he finds the owner of the notebook. You should tell him that it's you and prove it to him," Vanessa said as I kept looking back at Aidan's table where the same crowd of girls were.
Should I tell them about the threat? I kept debating with myself whether or not to tell them about the photos. Vanessa and Ethan were aware of my past eating disorder, but they didn't know about the photos, and I was worried that they were going to ask me if they could see them. My eyes glanced over to where Alexa and Ashley were sitting. They were glaring at me with cold eyes, almost wanting me to slip up so they could expose the photos. Well, that answers my question.
"Serena!" Vanessa called, her voice raised slightly. I looked back over at her. And I tried to forget about the warnings that I had been getting all day. "Hm?" I asked. She repeated herself, saying that I should tell Aidan that I was his mystery girl. But the moment she said the words "mystery girl," the verbal warning repeated itself in my head. And I shook my head, trying to silence the voices. "I-I c-can, I can't," I stuttered.
Vanessa and Ethan looked concerned, and they silently pleaded for me to tell them what was wrong. "Serena, you haven't been yourself for the past few days. You keep looking over at Ashley's table and quickly look away before they notice you. What's going on?" Ethan asked. "It's nothing! Just drop it!" I snapped. A few people turned their heads to look at me, and I ran out of the cafeteria and hid in one of the bathroom stalls where I cried for the rest of the lunch period.
After school, Alexa and Isabelle continued to make it clear that my reputation would be tarnished forever if I told Aidan about the identity of the mystery girl. I tried to block them out by humming one of his songs while I was doing my chores, and by the time dinner was over, I was so tired. As I climbed into bed, I felt my phone vibrate in my pocket. I thought that maybe it was Vanessa or Ethan texting me, asking if I was doing okay. Since we hardly spoke to each other since my little outburst.
But, it was from Instagram, telling me that Aidan was on another live stream. I made sure that the bedroom door was closed, and I joined the stream. Aidan looked different this time. Usually, he would be happy, but this time he seemed down, and I could see very faint bags underneath his eyes. People in his stream were a little worried about him because he zoned out for long amounts of time.
User1: Aidan, are you okay?
Aidansarmyfan25: Did something happen?
SereneCinderella: What's going on, Aidan?
Aidan shook his head slightly, bringing him out of his daze. "I'm sorry, guys. I've just been really stressed out these past few days with finding the owner of the purple notebook," He responded as he held up my notebook to the camera. "Hundreds of girls have tried to prove that they're the owner of the notebook, but none of them have correctly guessed the lyrics. And that's frustrating because I can't get her voice out of my head,"
I started to feel guilty about not revealing myself to him, but I was afraid that Alexa and Isabelle would follow through with their threat. Then, I remembered what I told Vanessa and Ethan about trying to DM Aidan and tell him I knew who the girl was. It's a one in a million shot that he'll answer his DMs, but this is the only way to communicate with him. "If anybody knows a girl that might be the owner, please tell me because I'm getting desperate," Aidan sighed. This was my chance. I quickly typed out the message and posted the comment, hoping that he would notice it.
SereneCinderella: I know who the girl is.
Aidan's eyes scanned through the comments, and I was hoping that he would notice mine. "SereneCinderella said she knows who the girl is. I'll DM you in a moment," he said. I could feel my eyes grow wide, and I was in shock that Aidan noticed it. A few minutes later, my phone vibrated again, and I saw that Aidan had DMed me as promised.

Hey, so you said that you know who the owner of the notebook is?
Yes, she's a good friend of mine.
Just curious, why didn't she come up to the table and prove to me that she was the one?
I tried to convince her to go up there, but she's shy, and she's a little embarrassed because of that video.
I understand that. I would be embarrassed too. Does she know that you're talking to me right now?
No.
I need to know who she is, what's her name?
Meet me in the cafeteria tomorrow. I'll bring her with me.
Okay. But I hope this isn't a prank.
It's not, I swear.
Ok, goodnight!
Goodnight!
