~ Chapter Thirty Nine ~
So, you found the rest of our siblings?" Dusk questioned as she and Five drove down the road, heading to the unknown location. "Not necessarily. But I do have a pretty good idea where Allison and Klaus might be," he replied, keeping his eyes on the road. Though she wouldn't admit it, the raven's heart was pounding rapidly as they drove to the meetup spot. She hadn't seen her siblings in three years and wondered how they would react to seeing her back in their lives.
A few minutes later, they pulled up to the front of a TV store, making Dusk a little confused. Five led her through the familiar back alleyway and up the staircase, entering what appeared to be someone's apartment. "Dusk?" A voice called out. She looked over her shoulder, seeing Luther, Diego, Vanya, and some man sitting around a small wooden table. "Luther! Diego!"
Luther seemed shocked, and Diego immediately pulled out one of his knives, making her back away. "What the hell?" She said. "Last time I saw you, you busted out a pair of fiery wings and threw balls of fire and nearly killed us. And this one..." Diego said, now pointing his knife at Vanya. "Had me suspended midair and sucked the life out of me with energy tentacles,"
"Diego, put the knife down! They're fine!" Luther protested. "I think I'm allowed time to process this, Luther," Diego demanded, tossing his knife in the air and catching it in his hand. "Oh, I would love to see an energy tentacle!" the random man said as he took a bite from his jello cup. Dusk put her hands up and looked at Diego with sympathy, slowly walking towards him again as she tried to apologize. "I wasn't in the right frame of mind, and I took it out on you guys, and I'm sorry if it means anything," she said softly. "Same here. I may not remember what I did, but I'm sorry too," Vanya said, standing up and placing a hand on her shoulder.
Diego looked at the two before sliding his knife back into its case and sitting down. "It does. I'm just going through a lot right now," he sighed. "You want to talk about it?" Dusk questioned as she and Vanya sat next to Luther. "There's this... girl that I like. I thought she liked me, but it turns out that she's-" Before Diego could finish his sentence, the store front opened, and someone laughed. "Is anyone here?" Allison's voice called out.
They stood up and walked to the railing, watching Five walk in with Allison and Klaus. Dusk couldn't help but smile when Klaus came into view, feeling her heart race with excitement at the thought of seeing him again. "I know this is impossible, but... did we all get sexier?" Klaus asked as he took off his sunglasses. Dusk couldn't help but let out a small chuckle at hearing his funny phrases again, and she walked down the staircase, Vanya in tow. "Vanya, Dusk," Allison said, remembering the last time she saw her two sisters.
"Alli, I missed you so much!" Dusk smiled, embracing her tightly before letting Vanya have a turn. She looked in Klaus's direction as he hugged Diego, catching the faint whiff of alcohol. He turned around, seeing the raven beauty and the two stared at each other before Dusk wrapped her arms around him. "I missed you, Klausy," She muffled into his black shirt. "I missed you too, songbird," he whispered. Even though they couldn't see each other that well with the sun shining brightly into the store, they noticed their new haircuts and couldn't help but smile.
"Your hair!" They said in unison once they pulled apart. "It's cute. I like it," Klaus commented, making Dusk blush harder than ever before. "Thanks, I like your hair too," She replied, giving him one more hug before Five got Klaus's attention. "Hey Klaus, is Ben here?" He questioned. "Oh... uh, no. Unfortunately, ghosts can't time travel," he lied, knowing full well that Ben was sitting down, feet away from his family. "Are you kidding me?" He shouted to him.
"Alright then, let's get down to business," Five said, guiding everyone up the stairs to the living room. As Dusk and the others took their seats, she couldn't help but glance over at Klaus. He gave a small side smile before he poured himself something to drink. "Hey Elliot, do you mind leaving? This is a family matter," Five said to the eccentric man, now identified as Elliot. He nodded and walked down the stairs and out the front door, leaving the Hargreeves to conduct their meeting.
"First off, I want to say I'm sorry. I know I screwed the pooch on this whole going-back-in-time-and-getting-stuck thing. But the real kick the pants here is that we brought the end of the world with us," Five began. Everyone knew full well about the incoming doomsday, so it was no surprise to them. Well, almost everybody knew. "Oh my god, again?" Klaus asked, looking at his siblings. Everyone looked at him with looks that said, Are you serious right now? Wondering how in the hell he didn't know about it before the meeting.
"All of you knew? Why am I always the last one to find out about the end of the- Oh my god, my cult is gonna be so pissed! Five, I told them we had until 2019!" he gasped. "We have until Monday. We have six days," Five clarified for the second time that day. "Is it Dusky and Vanya again?" He asked before taking a sip from his drink. "Klaus!" protested Allison, defending her sisters, who were equally shocked by this assumption. "Do you have any leads, Five?" Dusk asked, trying to ignore the harshness of Klaus's statement. Diego handed a nearby folder to Five, who handed it to Allison.
Dusk, Vanya, and Klaus moved so they could see who the lead was, and they were stunned to see a photo of what appeared to be their father holding an umbrella in the middle of a sunny day. "Holy shit, is that Dad?" Allison inquired. "Yeah, standing on the grassy knoll," Diego answered. "Diego and I have been trying to talk to Dad about what exactly this means, but so far, we've got nothing,"
Diego looked at him, claiming that Reginald was planning to kill President Kennedy. "It's a possibility. But we don't know who or what sets doomsday in motion. It could be Kennedy, or it could be something different. But if we know something that changes the timeline, we have to make it right," Five continued, making the siblings even more confused. "But how do we know what's broken and what's not?" Dusk questioned.
"We know Dad's been having shady-ass meetings with some shady-ass people. We know he'll be on the grassy knoll three days from now to kill the president. So, I think I know what we all have to do," Diego sighed exasperatedly. "We have to find Dad," Five answered, whereas Diego spoke a completely different answer, claiming that they had to kill him. "Wait, you want to kill him? But that would mess up the timeline! I mean, he adopted us in 1989!" Dusk protested.
"Doesn't matter. He's involved in a plot to kill Kennedy. If anyone should be getting shot, it's him! Why are you suddenly defending him, Dusk? You hated him!" Diego argued. "I'm not defending him, Numbnuts! I'm just saying that you're going to screw up the timeline more if you decide to kill him!" The raven growled. It looked like the two were about to get into a fight, but Five quickly intervened, separating the two. "Stop it, both of you! No one is killing Dad. Now, sit your asses back down," he hissed. They complied and sat back down, glaring at each other.
"None of us are supposed to be here, right? What if it's us? Has anyone here done anything to screw up the timeline?" Vanya asked. There was silence for a moment. Everyone had made their presence known to the people of Dallas in one way or another. Whether it was working for Jack Ruby, or involved in local politics, they all knew it would impact the timeline. The siblings argued over what they had been doing throughout the sixties, leaving Five, Dusk, and Vanya the only ones who said nothing.
"Look, the only thing I've done is be a nanny on a farm," Vanya admitted. "And I've been providing comfort and helping out a widow and her son. So, I don't have anything to do with that," Dusk added. "Maybe you do. We just don't know it yet," Allison responded, directing her words to both her sisters. Diego whistled sharply, piercing almost everybody's ears.
"Listen to yourselves. Everything in our lives is connected to Kennedy. That can't be a coincidence. Luther works for Ruby, Allison is protesting the government, and Dad is on the grassy knoll. Klaus is doing something weird and pervy but probably related. We were sent back here for one reason. Saving John Fitzgerald Kennedy," Diego said, taking the reins in this meeting. Everyone continued to argue. Everyone except Five, who looked down at the ground as he had flashbacks from his brief time when he saw the apocalypse had followed them. All of his siblings had been trying to end it. And just like last time, they all died.
"Guys, you all die," Five spoke up, making everybody go silent again. "I was there, and I saw it. And I want to forget it, but I can't," Five said, swallowing the lump in his throat. He explained that Russian nukes had vaporized the world, and everybody in it, making their faces fall at the thought of that happening. "Hazel gave his life to save us, so maybe you all should shut up and listen to me. I don't know if there's a reason for everything, but Dad will know. We need to talk to him before everything and everyone we know is dead,"
"Okay, I'm out!" Luther sighed, standing up from his chair and walking towards the staircase. Dusk leaned back, still pondering how and why this doomsday was coming and why was it continuing to follow and torment them. But there were more questions than answers. Diego soon left too, following behind Luther, and Five went after them, telling them they still had to figure this out.
Klaus reached over to the wooden table and grabbed himself a cup full of the weird jello Elliot had made. "You know, I could really go for some tacos right now, Allison?" He asked, looking at his sister. "Tacos? Shouldn't we wait for them to get back?" She questioned. "You know those guys. It could take forever for them to bro it out. Dusk, Vanya, tacos?" He replied. "Is there any way that tacos could end the world?" Vanya inquired. Klaus chuckled as he stood up from his seat and ushered the girls to come with him, saying there was only one way to find out.
The three sisters followed Klaus down the stairs, laughing as he consistently made funny and unrelated jokes, just like old times.
