~ Chapter Fifty Eight ~

"The Hotel Obsidian? Since when have you come here, Klausy?" Dusk asked, staring up at the multistory brick building. Aside from the black overhang above the entrance and the neon red sign on the rooftop, there seemed to be nothing special about it. But whatever it looked like, fancy or plain, the raven hoped this could be a good hiding spot for her and the rest of the family. "Oh, I've been to this place many times before. Quite charming, actually!" Klaus softly chuckled.

Just as they reached the hotel entrance, all the Hargreeves began stuffing themselves into the rotating glass door, continuously bumping into one another as they tried to squeeze past and get to the other side. "Seriously?" Dusk resisted the urge to roll her eyes as she finally broke free. As she laid eyes on the hotel's interior, her jaw dropped. Pillars leading up to the elevator were all glowing blue, a bar with a fish tank sat in one corner, while the check-in counter sat in the other.

"Oh, Hotel Obsidian. I missed you, you slutty old dame! Absorb her... absorb her into your bosom," Klaus exhaled as a grin wider than the Cheshire Cat appeared. "You know, way back in her heyday, she played host to world leaders. Roosevelt, Gandi, Stalin, Gorbachev, Castro, King Olaf of Norway, a few of the Kim Jongs, Tito, Dali Lama, Elvis, and not one but two Kardashians allegedly,"

Some of the siblings rolled their eyes as they walked off to explore their temporary home. But Dusk was just one of the few who continued to listen. "You sure know a lot about celebs coming here, Klaus," She replied as he waited for someone to respond. "Well, I may have seen a few come in here. Of course, every time I tried to talk to them, some stupid security guard pushed me away,"

The raven chuckled, trying to humor her eccentric boyfriend as she felt he was exaggerating to impress her. But then again, there was always a possibility of one encounter. "But nowadays, she's a flophouse, a party house for those of us not looking to be judged by society's rules and norms," "You mean, a place to hide?" Luther questioned. Klaus nodded, claiming that it was perfect and that they would be taken care of, no questions asked.

Out of the corner of her eye, Dusk could see more of the upscale guests staring and whispering about them. But she acted like she didn't notice and walked to the check-in desk with the rest of the family. Klaus rang the little bell, calling out to the hotel employee dressed in a blue and yellow suit and bowtie.

"Chet, Mon Frere! It's so great to see you. I'd like my usual suite, por favor!" Klaus gasped as Chet walked towards the edge of the counter. "I've never seen you before," he replied, quieting the still-ringing bell with his fingertips. A small pant came from Chet's right, and Dusk looked over to see a tiny dog resting on a doggy bed. She reached out, holding it an inch or two from his mouth.

Curiously, the dog leaned forward and sniffed her hand before deciding to lick it, making the raven giggle. "Hi sweetie," she whispered, using her other hand to pet him. "Please stop scaring my dog," Chet said as he caught sight of the moment. We were having a good time, buddy. Don't have to be so uptight. "We need some rooms, please," Vanya spoke up. Chet nodded and placed a little sign down, reading Cash up front.

Everyone's eyes widened as they didn't seem to recall having any cash on them. "Alright, empty your pockets," Luther stated. Dusk reached into her jacket pockets first, finding only a crumpled piece of straw paper. She then dug through her jeans, holding out a little hope she could contribute. Her index and middle finger made contact with something, and as she pulled the object out, she was relieved to see a folded fifty-dollar bill.

"Great, Dusk has some cash!" Luther sighed, taking the bill and setting in on the counter. The rest of the siblings stared down at their hands, knowing that most of their things probably wouldn't be accepted as payment. As a last resort, Luther looked down at the watch around his right wrist and unclasped it, handing it to Chet.

"What will this and the fifty bucks get us?" He questioned as Chet examined the watch with a tiny magnifying glass. He then walked towards the wall where hooks containing the room keys hung, grabbing two. "Mazel tov," he said, placing the keys on the desk. With looks of relief, the Hargreeves made their way to the elevators to enjoy their brief relaxation. "Let's meet back at the bar in two hours so we can make a plan, okay?" Five spoke up as he caught a glance at the nearby fish tank.

Coming up with a plan made Diego's ears perk up, and he ran up the staircase. "I have a plan. We attack the Sparrows and we take back our house, and then we'll punch Dad a bit until he admits that we're better and he loves us more. Boom! Done!" Dusk and the others rolled their eyes as they walked past him and into the opening elevator shaft. "Just can't stay away from confrontation, can you?" The raven raised an eyebrow, crossing her arms in front of her chest.

"See? It's paradise! High ceilings, sense of space, aromatic," Klaus smiled as he and his brothers entered their hotel room. He walked over to one of the nearby windows and opened it. "Where's the bathroom?" Diego asked. "Down the hall, or... Nature's bathroom," Number Four responded. Diego squinted, calling his brother disgusting. "But consistent," As their eccentric brother relieved himself from the window, Luther, Five, and Diego picked out their beds. Well, mostly Luther and Five, as Number Two began to complain.

"If I wanted bunk beds and group showers, I would've stayed in the Texas nuthouse. At least they had free Jell-O... and Lila," He muttered. Five let out an audible sigh as he sat up and glared at him. "Hey Diego, I just spent the past twenty days saving the world. Twice. Can I get five minutes to relax before figuring all the new kinks out? Please and thank you,"

Meanwhile in Dusk, Allison, and Vanya's room, they looked at their surroundings, each having different opinions on the matter. "Eh, not too bad. I've stayed in worse," the raven shrugged. "It's definitely ugly," Allison commented. Vanya tried to make light of the situation, saying they were lucky enough to have a roof over their head, even if it wasn't the roof they had in mind. They lay in their sleeping arrangements, with Allison and Vanya on the beds and Dusk on the couch.

"You sure you don't mind the couch, Dusk?" Number Seven questioned. "I'm good, thanks though," she answered, staring at the ceiling. It was silent for a moment, the only noise breaking it was the sound of their light breathing. They all reflected not only on the Sparrow incident, but also on the last time they were in the 60s. "Last night, I was sleeping in bed next to my amazing husband," Allison whispered.

"I kissed Sissy goodbye a few hours ago," Vanya explained. The two looked over to their sister, noticing her prolonged silence. "I lost one of my best friends, all because I didn't let her explain herself. God, I feel like such an idiot!" Dusk shook her head, punching one of the nearby couch cushions. "Wait, is your friend that redhead girl that was with The Handler?" Vanya questioned. The raven propped herself on her elbows and glanced at her siblings.

"Yeah, that's her. Her name's Victoria, I met her back in Dallas while she was working at a bar. She reminds me of myself in a way," she explained. "How so?" Allison inquired. "Well, she doesn't take shit from anybody, she broke a guy's arm in half so Klaus and I could get away from one of his old foes. And... we both never had many friends or people who understood us. We could've been a great team until my dumb ass ruined everything!"

Allison and Vanya got up and sat on the ground, placing comforting hands on her shoulders. "I-I should've let her explain. Cause even though most of the Commission w-wanted to kill us, I don't think Victoria wanted that to h-happen," Dusk trembled. "You're not an idiot, Dusky. Any of us would've reacted the same way in that moment," Vanya said, hoping the words would calm her a little.

"But is it normal to feel guilty?" Dusk questioned. "It is. I've said some things I wish I could take back, but I can't," Allison nodded. As the rumor reminded her sister of her entire career being a mistake, the raven looked over their heads, staring out the blinded window. If only we had that briefcase. Then I could go back and make things right with her. I hope wherever Vic is, she's doing okay...
