NEWT ENTERED THE ROOM THE NEXT
morning that had a tense atmosphere after his outburst, the day before. Everyone took a few glances his way but focused on the desk before them. Thomas nodded to Newt.
"I'm sorry about how I acted yesterday." The blond boy spoke up and everyone looked up to him.
"I guess I can't hide this anymore." He said and sighed, before he pulled his sleeve up to his elbow.
His forearm was adorned with dark veins. It looked like the sting of a Griewer, but Evie knew it was the flare.
Newt got infected.
Evie's heart stopped and she felt sick to her stomach.
No.
The girl shook her head in disbelief. Newt's eyes met hers.
"Shit!" Frypan cursed, his eyes ripped open. He probably had the image of Winston before his eyes, just like Evie.
Everyone in the room was staring at Newts arm.
"I thought you came from WCKD?!" Brenda said alarmed, seemingly getting nervous at the sight of the flare.
She had seen so many cranks in her life. Hell, she even fought some and bound them to chains.
But she never would have thought that they ever would be one of her friends.
"I guess they just wanted to see the difference between immunes and people like me." He said, his voice calm as if he didn't even care.
"Why didn't you say anything?!" Gally pressed on the boy, but still kept calm to not blast the tension in the room.
Newt didn't answer him.
His eyes betrayed him as he searched for Evie's look, trying to see what she was thinking. The girl just stared at his arm, her expression pale and blank.
"Alright, it doesn't matter we can still fix this!" Thomas said, leaning on the desk. They started arguing, which Evie didn't even hear.
The girl shook her head frantically, her eyes glued to the floor and backing away, towards the door.
"Evie." Newt mumbled and started to walk towards her.
The blond shook her head and ran out of the room.
"Evie!" she heard Newt calling behind her as she walked over the dry floor, her shoes shoving Little Rock's aside.
She heard his steps, when he approached her and grabbed her wrist to stop her from walking away.
"Bloody hell, let me explain!" he hissed. The girl stopped and turned around.
"Why?! Why didn't you say anything? You- you're breaking up with me for no reason and you're just now telling me what's going on?! Are you serious?!" she threw at him. Newt stood at one point, looking at her guilty.
"Why didn't you say anything?" she breathed.
"It wouldn't have changed anything anyway." Newt's gaze remained silent. His eyes met hers again.
"Don't you understand? I thought if I got some distance from you, it wouldn't hurt you so I decided to leave!" It was now, when everything made sense to Evie.
The reason he left her with the right arm and drove away with Thomas and Frypan. The reason he was acting so distant and stressed the whole time was because he actually never planned to come back. He thought he wouldn't make it anyways.
"You didn't plan to come back to the right arm, did you?!" Evie hissed. Newts mouth fell open, when he tried to respond but Evie wouldn't let him.
"Because you knew, you maybe wouldn't make it, so you wanted to save Minho all on your own and leave me with Vince!" She scolded.
"All this nonsense about protecting me, it was all about you." Evie felt tears welling up in her eyes when she thought about Newt actually wanting to leave her.
Newt shook his head.
"This is not about me, this is about us!" he snapped.
"What ‚us' are you talking about?! You broke up with me!" Evie yelled.
"Because I don't want to hurt you!" Newts voice got even louder.
„You wouldn't hurt me-.." She yelled when Newt interrupted the girl.
"You were terrified of the flare and WCKD! When you were back at the right arm, I saw how terrified you were! I couldn't ask of you, to get into this and watch me turning into one of these monsters! I did this for you because that's what you gotta do when.." Newt breathed heavy for a few seconds.
"I can't let you see me turn into a monster Evie." He sighed, his voice breaking.
Evie was taken aback for a moment.
"You're not a monster Newt. You're an asshole." She said, shaking her head.
"You wanted to play the hero and left me behind with people I don't even know! You, Thomas and Frypan are the only family I have left, don't you get that?!" She started yelling at him. Newt kept silent.
The girl shook her head again and walked away.

The plan was settled. Thomas and Gally kidnapped Teresa and arrived with her in their arms. Gally carried the brown-haired girl in with a bag over her head.
The sight gave Evie a feeling of satisfaction.
Gally set Teresa down on a chair and Newt pulled the bag off her head.
She gasped and then looked at Newt. He sat down on a chair next to Thomas and Evie.
Teresa looked around. She scanned everyone for a moment before she spotted Gally.
"Gally?" She asked, confused.
"I'm gonna tell you how this works. We'll ask you a few questions and you'll tell us exactly what we need to know." Gally explained and it reminded Evie of the old days in the glade when he interrogated her.
Gally never waisted his time, beating around the bush. He always went straight to the point.
"Okay, something simple first." He stood up and pulled up a chair.
"Where's Minho?" He asked and Teresa looked at Thomas.
"Listen. You don't really think that-.." She stuttered and Gally interrupted her by setting the chair down in front of her, with a loud noise. He sat on it, in an intimidating position.
"Don't look at him. Why are you looking at him? Look at me. He's not gonna help you!" His tone was sharp.
Thomas watched the whole scene with a sort of sad expression and Evie could tell that it hurt him to see this girl.
"You're keeping Minho in this building," Gally continued.
"Where?" He asked and Teresa looked at the floor.
"He's locked up with the others. It's on
level 3." she replied.
"How many others?" Newt asked.
"28." Teresa replied and Gally looked at Brenda.
"I can make that work!" the short haired girl said.
"No. No, you don't understand, the whole level is restricted. You can only open the doors with a thumb scan- ID!" Teresa rambled, nervously.
"That's why you're coming with us." Thomas spoke up and Evie saw how Teresa tensed up at his voice.
"Well I don't know. We don't necessarily need her. Right?" Gally said and stood up.
"Not all of her." he said and walked to the table. He picked up a knife.
"We just need her finger!" He hissed.
"Gally back off." Thomas said, tiredly and stood up.
"No, he's right. She didn't deserve it any other way! Stop defending her!" Evie interjected, pointing at the girl with her hand. Teresa closed her eyes.
"Are you squeamish? I guarantee you, she's done a lot worse to Minho!" Gally said, addressing Thomas.
"That's not the plan. Back off!" Thomas said, walking up to Gally and taking the knife from him. He gave Evie a warning look and she crossed her arms in annoyance.
"It won't make a difference! Do whatever you want with me!" the girl said.
„Tempting." Evie commented. Teresa looked at her for a split second, before she started talking again. Her voice was now calmer.
„You still won't get through the front door. The sensors will pick you up-"
"We know." Thomas walked towards Teresa.
"We are tagged. We're the property of WCKD!" he said mockingly and crouched down in front of her. Teresa looked down at him and Evie could feel the tension between the two of them.
"You'll help us with that too." he said and held out the knife to her.
