Act One: New City, New Beginnings
Tate arrived at the crime scene and walked under the tape and went over to one of the officers who were in charged. "I'm Tate Riley. I'm undercover." he shook hands with the officer as he leads Tate to the scene.
"Aren't you a bit young to be undercover?" The officer looked Tate up and down.
"I'm 26 and no I'm not." Tate replied as he placed his hands into his pockets, the officer just nods as he started to walk towards the scene with Tate slowly following behind.
"Her name is Laura Crane, she was a film procressor in Blackmore University. Her body was found around 7:40pm which makes her death approximately around 7:10-7:20 p.m. She was stabbed 13 times in the chest and the gut." The officer explained to Tate who was nodding as he listened.
~~
After a few minutes later, Tate heard his phone vibrating in his pocket, he excuses himself from the other officers and walking away from the scene. "Hello?" he places his phone to his ear.
"Hey babe, I'm on the way to that frat party to get Tara, can you come and meet me?" Sam said through the phone.
"Sure, I'll see you there. I love you." Tate replies as he was walking towards the tape and going underneath it.
"I love you to, I'll see you soon babe."
~~
Within a few minutes Tate arrived on the campus of Blackmore to see Sam standing outside waiting for him. "Hey." Tate walked towards her, smiling at her before she smiles and capturing his lips.
Tate returns the kiss, as they both pulled away and went into the house. They see Mindy and her girlfriend, Anika. They made their way over to them and then hearing people arguing.
Sam and Tate saw Chad was pushing a male away, and Tate pulls them apart. "Guys, stop!" Sam looks between Chad and the male before she stood in front of him. "Sorry to interrupt. I'm just gonna tase you in the ball real quick." Sam says as she tases him, making him grunt in pain.
"Don't ever lay your hands on her again." Tate looked over at the male who was on the floor.
"You fucking bitch!" The male yells out in pain as he held his crotch.
"Sam. Tate." They both turn around to see Tara having a pissed off expression on her face. "Are you fucking kidding me?" Tara asked her sister and Tate. "You're stalking me now?" Tara asked Sam, as she walked past Sam and Tate.
"Holy shit, it's that psycho girl!"
Tate turned around to the guy and gave him a look before the group followed after Tara.
"Tara. Will you stop?" Sam says as she followed behind Tara.
"I cannot believe you and Tate did that! You both embarrassed me." Tara looked behind her as she yelled out to them.
"T, that guy was gonna take advantage of you." Tate says as he followed behind his girlfriend.
"So?" Tara stopped in her tracks as she was fully standing in front of Tate and Sam. "So?"
"If I want to hookup with an asshole, that's my decision! It's my decision." Tara pointed to herself as she looked between her sister and Tate. "It's not about you! You're out of my life for five years, and then you can't leave me alone for five minutes." She continued.
"Because you're not dealing with that happened to us. Have you even gone to see the counselor once?" Sam asked her sister.
"No, I'm not going to."
"Why not?"
"Because i'm uninterested in living in the past like you are. Neither is Tate."
"What's that supposed to mean?" Sam asked with confusion lacing in the tone.
"Guys, come on." Tate stood between the Carpenters as he looked at his girlfriend and then back at Tara.
"It means i'm not gonna let what happened to us for three days define the rest of my life." Tara explained to her sister.
"So you're gonna just pretend it never happened?" Sam asks.
"What are you doing here, Sam? In New York? Wanting to be with Tate? You're working two shitty jobs to help with rent, whatever, but what's your plan?"Tara looked at her sister and then Tate then looking back at Sam. "I know what i'm gonna do. Okay? Because I'm gonna keep going to college, I'm gonna get my degree and I'm gonna live my life. My life. Okay? I know. You followed Tate and I here, but you wont let me out of your sight. Both of you."
"T, we're both just trying to look out for you okay?" Tate stood in front of Sam.
"I--" Tara starts as she rubs her hands over her face. "I know. I know you both are And I appreciate it Tate. But Sam you can't do it for the rest of my life, though. You have to let me go."
They was footsteps approaching the sisters and Tate. "Hey!" The girl throws the drink all over Tate who was standing in front of Sam. "Sorry hot stuff that was for her. You Murderer!" one of the girls says as she looked at Tate with a flirty smile, before Tate could see Sam was gonna launch at her but he grabs her waist and pulls her back.
"What the fuck is wrong with you, bitch?" Sam yelled at the girl, and Tate was still holding Sam back. "You got a problem with me?" Sam asks the girl as Mindy and Anika and Chad were standing in front of them. "You guys should stay away from her. And you hottie with the Hazel eyes, hit me up anytime you want!" Tate rolled his eyes at the girl, as he still held Sam's waist.
"She knows what she did."
"I didn't fucking do anything!" Sam yelled as she had her hands on Tate's hands.
"Sure, bitch."
"Walk away!"
"I'm so sick of this shit." Sam says as she watched the girls walk away from them. "You okay?" Sam turned to Tate whose hair and shirt was soaking wet from the drink.
"Yeah, I'm fine. Are you?" Tate asked her, she just nods her head at him, giving her boyfriend a small smile.
"I've got some tissues," Ethan nervously says as he took out the tissues and then looked down at them. "I've got three."
"Thanks, Ethan." Tate takes the tissues off Ethan, and started to wipe his face.
The group eventually got back to the apartment what Sam and Tara share with their roommate Quinn.
Tate was in Sam's room as he had some clothes in her room, whenever he stayed over. "Hi Tate." Tate heard a voice behind him, as he turns around to see Quinn standing behind him, with a flirty smile.
"Uh, Hi Quinn." Tate picked out a shirt, and took off his other shirt and throws it into the hamper.
"You know, If you were single I'd jump on you like a heartbeat." Quinn says in a flirty tone.
Tate gives her a confused look, as he puts his clean shirt on, he didnt realize that Quinn was standing in front off him now. "You're quite hot wet..." She said as she ran her finger on his chest, which made Tate back away from her. "Quinn, I'm with Sam."
"What she doesn't know won't hurt her." She stepped closer to him again which made Tate move away from her completely.
"Quinn." a voice interrupted Quinn from whatever she was about to do next.
"Hi Sam." She walked past Tate as she ran her finger across his cheek.
"How is she still living here?" Tate asked his girlfriend who had an annoyed look on her face.
"Because she is Tara's friend." Sam sighed, and Tate stepped closer to his girlfriend and pulling her closer to him by gripping onto her waist. "You should stay with me." He said as he glances down at her lips and then back at her eyes.
"Sounds like a plan." Sam smiled up at her boyfriend, before they leaned in and their lips would be in sync.
The couple are interrupted by a knock on the door, to see Chad standing there. "You guys might wanna see this." He told them.
They walked into the living room to see the rest of the group and Quinn and Ethan sitting on the couch. "What's going on?" Sam asked as her and Tate stood next to Chad.
"I'm standing in front of the apartment building where the mutilated bodies of two students were discovered."
Sam and Tate both look at each other before looking back at the TV.
"Their names have just been released by the police. Jason Carvey and Greg Bruckner."
"Holy shit, that's that chode from our Film Studies class!" Mindy pointed out. "The one obsessed with Argento."
"Also found at the scene were various Ghostface costumes, a character popularized by theStab movie franchise."
"Pack a bag. We leave in ten." Sam walked past heading towards the rooms.
"Sam! Wait, Sam!" Tara stood up from where she was sitting and went after her sister.
"We're getting out of the city." Sam stated as she continued to walk through the hallway.
Tate heard a vibrate in his pocket, he takes out his phone to see a message from one of his co workers. He lets out a breath before putting it back into his pocket. "Guys I need to take a phone call." He says as he steps into another room.
After that he finished his phone call with his boss, he walks out to see everyone but Sam and Tara.
"Where's Sam and Tara?" he asked his friends.
"They went the station." Chad told him as he nods his head and grabbed his jacket and headed downstairs.
He sees people running out from the bodega and some were running towards him. "Excuse me, what's going?" Tate asked one of the people who stopped in their tracks.
"Some guy in a mask." They frantically say before running off away.
"Shit," Tate takes out his phone and calls for backup."Code 8, requesting backup on my location." Tate says through his phone before walking towards the store to see Ghostface holding a shotgun in his hands and seeing Sam and Tara hiding from him.
Tate quietly goes inside and went up behind Ghostface, they were aiming the gun ready to shoot, but before they could Tate pushes their arms up to the roof where they'd shot up at it.
Tate looks over at Sam and Tara who were looking back at him. "Go!" Sam shook her head along with Tara. "Go!" Tate repeatedly said.
"No we're not leaving you!" Sam looked at her boyfriend which made him look back at her. "Sam, go!"
"Tate?" Tara looked over at her brother figure as he looks at the carpenter sisters. "Go! Quickly backup is coming!" He told them, as they were hesitant at first but they left, leaving Tate and Ghostface alone.
"Come on fuck face!" Tate taunted at Ghostface as they were swinging their knife towards him which he dodged every time. Tate stunned them by kicking him in the knee making them stumble.
Tate grabbed them and punched them right in the face, making them go on the floor.
Before anything else could happen, the sirens of Tate's backup, scared the Ghostface off and he ran out towards the back door.
Tate walked out the bodega, and Sam and Tara both sigh in relief and Sam runs over to him and pulling him in for a tight hug along with Tara. "I was so worried." Sam mumbled into his shoulder, as he kisses the top of her forehead and rubbed her back.
~~
The three were now sat in an interrogation room, bored. No one had come in since they were brought into the room. They were stuck staring at the pictures from the crime scenes that were searched earlier that evening.
The door finally opened and Tara sat up from her position against the table. Detective Bailey entered the room and smiled at the sisters, not sparing Tate a glance. He revealed a Ghostface mask and tossed it on the table.
"This was found at the apartment crime scene. DNA said if belonged to someone called 'Richie Kirsch'." He told them.
Sam looked up at him. "That ring a bell?" Tate rolled his eyes.
"We're familiar with him." Sam told him.
"Prick." Tate said under his breath.
"But the one that attacked us had a different mask on. It was kinda more beat up, like it was older." Tara informed him.
Bailey put his hand to his face. "Gotta ask, you have alibi's for tonight?" He asked them.
Tara leaned back. "Yeah, I was at a party with my friends." She told him.
"I was at my therapist. I can give you his information you can call to check if you want." She offered.
"I was at work." Tate said.
"Work where?" Bailey asked him.
Tate's eyes hardened. "Work."
Sam looked to her left, confused, she didn't know why he was being so blunt.
"Then we met Tara at the party, where I tased someone." Bailey furrowed his eyebrows. "Unrelated."
"That before or after this happened?" Bailey turned his phone around, and played the video of the girls throwing water at them.
"Before." Sam said.
"But the point is we were with people all night." Tara added.
"So our roommate's dad, just happens to pull our case?" Sam said, shrugging.
"That would be a crazy coincidence, right. The detective who has the case offered it to me 'cause it involves Quinn. But I can totally give it back if you're uncomfortable? Up to you." He offered them.
Tara and Sam looked at each other, but Tate answered before they could say anything. "I wouldn't be against that."
Bailey sighed. "Well I didn't ask you, so."
Tate cocked his head to the side. "Am I not a part of this case too?" He asked.
"I didn't call you for questioning, you only showed up at the bodega." Bailey told him.
"Well I'm here now though." Tate said back.
"No one asked you to be. If you'd stayed in work you might've been on this side of the table." Tate's eyes widened.
Sam and Tara looked at him weirdly. "What's he talking about?" Sam asked.
Bailey smirked. "He didn't tell you?" Tate glared at him.
"I guess this must be familiar to you." Gesturing at the evidence. "You've seen it before."
Tate smirked at him. "Well you wouldn't have a lot of it if not for me. At least you have one competent officer here."
Bailey gritted his teeth. "You little shit."
Tate laughed. "You know you remind me of Richie. He couldn't take an insult."
Sam slapped his arm. "What's he talking about?" She whisper shouted at him.
"I'll explain later."
Bailey continued his questions. "So if the man who attacked you did steal your license and plant it next to the body, it'd probably be somebody close to you." Sam looked down, this was too close to the last time. "How long have you known your friends?" He asked.
"Well, we moved here with Mindy and Chad for summer semester like six months ago. So Quinn, Ethan, Anika all since then." Tara told him.
"Well, I can vouch for Quinn, so that's one less we have to worry about." Tate scoffed at this. "You have problem with that?" Bailey asked, annoyed.
"Yeah, I do actually." Tate replied.
"You don't think I know my daughter?"
"In our experience, you never really know someone." Tate answered cryptically.
Bailey rolled his eyes. "Do any of you have anyone who'd wanna target you?" He asked them.
"Not anyone who's still alive." Tara answered. Bailey tilted his head.
"Yikes." The door opened, another officer coming in.
"FBI's here. Claiming jurisdiction." Bailey got up, confused.
"Where are they?" The other three groaned, knowing that they still couldn't leave. They were allowed leave the room however.
They entered the main area of the station to see a short, blonde woman talking to Bailey. "Kirby?" Sam and Tate called.
"Hey, guys." She hugged the two.
"Tara." She nodded to the younger carpenter.
"You're the FBI?" Sam questioned.
"You guys know each other?" Bailey asked them.
"Yeah, we went to Woodsboro High together. She was a senior when we were freshmen." Sam told him.
"We share a certain history, yeah." Kirby turned to Bailey.
"Look I'm not trying to get into a jurisdiction pissing contest here, I just wanna help." She told him.
"I'll show you mine, et cetera." Bailey was handed the mask Kirby brought.
"He left this mask at the bodega. DNA traces of two individuals, 'Charlie Walker', 'Jill Roberts', both deceased." He handed the mask back to Kirby.
"Ghostface killers of 2011." She lifted the hem of her shirt. "Charlie Walker gave me this." They all looked at the scar on her stomach.
"Like I said I take a special interest. Is this the mask he was wearing when he attacked you?" She asked the three.
They shook their heads. "No." Tara answered.
"So he's leaving them on purpose." Bailey realized. "And whoever's doing this is a student of the killers who came before. Maybe he believes Sam's the latest in a long line?"
Sam nods, sarcastically. "Yeah, good luck with that. We're getting out of town." Sam and Tara began to walk but Bailey stopped them.
"I'm sorry, that's not possible." They turned to him.
"You're all persons of interest in a double homicide so you're not allowed to leave town, sorry." They looked a mix of confused and worried at him.
"Are you serious?" Tara asked.
"He's right." Tate and Kirby said simultaneously.
"But if we work together-" Kirby attempted to reason but was cut off.
"We're going." Sam said sternly. Tate stayed put, awkwardly. "Tate!" Until he heard his cue to leave.
The three left the station and saw groups of reporters waiting for them. They shared a look of annoyance, before opening the doors. They were bombarded with questions from all sides and Tate and Sam shielded Tara protectively. They made it out of the group til a voice stuck out.
"Gale Weathers, Channel 4." Tate rolled his eyes.
"Go away, mom." He told her, but she continued.
"Do you three think that you're the reason the Ghostface killer has come to the Big Apple?" She interviewed them.
Sam shook her head, before throwing a punch, which Gale dodged.
"Hey, Sam!" Tate warned her. Gale smirked.
"Nice try, sweetie. But I've done this dance bef-" She was cut off by another punch, this one connected.
"Tara!" Tate shouted, before checking on his mom.
She spared him a glance, before turning to Gale.
"Stay away from us." She warned him. They turned away, as Tate helped her.
"Look, I'm sorry." He followed the sisters.
Gale followed. "Are you really still mad at me?" She asked as Sam turned back.
"After Tate woke up, you said you weren't gonna write a book about what happened. And then you wrote a book about what happened."
Gale groaned in annoyance. "Oh, come on! Somebody was gonna write about what happened. It's what I do." She told them.
"I heard you couldn't sell the movie rights?" Tara quipped.
"It's all about true crime drama limited series these days." She informed them.
"After everything we went through. After what happened to Tate. What would Dewey think?" Tate and Gale looked hurt.
"Sam." She looked at him. "Come on."
"That's a low blow."
"So was your book. You called me 'unstable', and a 'born killer'."
Gale shrugged. "That's taken out of context."
Sam gave her a deadpan look. "That's literally a quote."
"You don't think what you wrote has something to do with what's happening to us?" Tara questioned her. They walked off again.
"I talked to Sidney." This stopped the three of them in their tracks.
"She's not coming here, is she?" Tara asked.
"No. She sends her love, but she's taking Mark and the kids somewhere safe. She deserves to have her happy ending."
Sam nodded. "On that much we agree." She turned and got in the cab.
"Hey I wanna catch this fucker as much as you do." Gale told them.
Tara turned back to her. "Maybe. Or maybe you're just worried that without Ghostface in your life, you're gonna fade away." Tara followed her sister and shut the door.
Tate turned back to her. "Look, I'm sorry about them. But the book wasn't the right thing to do."
She looked down. "Like I said, someone was gonna write about it. I thought it would be best if it was by someone who was there." The cab driver honked his horn.
Tate tuned. "They're waiting for me. I'm sorry, mom." She waved him off and he got in the front seat.
They drove for a few seconds before Tate turned to the two. "Tara?" She faced him. "Never hit my mom again." She looked down, slightly ashamed.
"Sorry, Tate." He turned away. "Say that to her."
Sam tried to put a hand on his shoulder as a way to apologize as well, but he shook it off. "You're no better. Throwing my dad's name out like that, I mean come on Sam. You know how that affected us."
Sam shrunk into herself. "I'm really sorry Tate. Really."
He couldn't look at the two of them, staring at the New York street as they drove off.
~~
Tate had to get away after what happened with Gale, Sam and Tara. He knew he shouldn't have split from the group but he wanted space.
He was now currently sat in his apartment, looking through the evidence he'd gathered on Bailey. He did not trust that man one bit, and had been looking into his past.
The loud noise of his phone vibrating interrupted his train of thought yet again. Everyone had been calling him for the last few hours, but like every other time the phone went off, he ignored it.
He went into his kitchen to get a drink for himself when he heard a knock on the door. He froze where he stood after hearing the noise, then they knocked again. He grabbed the knife that lay on his counter and slowly made his way to the door.
He quickly turned the knob and swung the door open, to reveal Sam. "Jesus, Tate!" She exclaimed.
He let out a sigh of relief before turning back around. "Don't scare me like that, Sam." He told her as he put the knife down.
She stepped in and kicked the door closed, startling Tate. He looked back at her confused. "You're one to talk." She spat at him.
"What?"
"'Don't scare me like that'? What the hell do you think we've been feeling for the last 5 hours?!" She shouted at him.
"Talking about suspects by the sounds of things." He replied.
"Yeah, you know what else? Worrying our asses off about you! You just walked off Tate! There's a murderer after us, did you really think that was smart?" She asked him.
"I needed space, I wasn't exactly thinking."
"And you didn't think to even tell us that you just wanted space? Mindy and Chad kept asking where you were. Tara kept apologizing and saying how worried she was, and so was I and you didn't think to tell us you were ok?" She questioned him. He didn't have a response to that, he just looked down. Sam wasn't finished though. "What was Bailey talking about?" She asked him.
He looked up, with furrowed brows. "What?"
"About you knowing about the evidence. What did you do, Tate?"
Tate sighed. He had to be honest now. He just knew she wouldn't like it. "I heard them talking about finishing Richie's film. And that meant only one thing, they were gonna kill you two." Sam's breath hitched.
"I recorded the part of the conversation I heard and brought it to Bailey. He said it wasn't enough and I could've faked it, but he was willing to give me a job. He said he knew my dad was a sheriff and I must've inherited something. He told me to stake them out, and get any information I could that could implicate them." He took a breath. "Once I'd gathered enough I brought it to Bailey, and he sent a team out to arrest them, then when he got there he found them both, murdered." Sam took in all the information, and couldn't believe it.
"So you've been lying to everyone, to me." He glanced up at her, before looking back at the ground, and nodding. "I can't believe you." He looked back at her. "You staked out two people who you knew wanted to kill me and Tara, without telling anyone and having no back up in case they found out and attacked you?!" She shouted at him.
"I had to protect you." He said, barely whispering, but she heard him.
"And what about you Tate? You wouldn't be protecting yourself. Did you not think about that?"
He lost it. "No, I didn't! You know why? Because I can't lose you again, Sam!" Her face dropped. "I didn't know where you were or what you were doing, for five years. Then we got reunited and I was the happiest I've been in years. Then we move here and I think that it'll be ok. But when I heard those guys wanted to hurt you and Tara. I just wanted to protect you both."
Sam started to tear up. "Tate?" He continued.
"Tara's like my sister, losing her would be hard enough. But if I lost the love of my life as well, again?! I wouldn't be able to live anymore." They were both crying now.
"Tate, you won't lo-" She got cut off.
"No! Do-don't say that, 'cause it could still happen. We have more of those fuckers to worry about." The tears streamed down his cheeks. "I just want to protect you. I just want you to be ok."
Sam rushed over to him and enveloped him in a hug. They cried into each others bodies, not wanting to let the other go. "I can't lose you. I can't." He mumbled into her shoulder. She hugged him tighter at his words. Tate realized what he said, they really didn't know what was gonna happen, so he was gonna make the most of the time left.
They pulled apart and looked at each other. "I-um, I wasn't gonna do this until our anniversary, but I don't know what'll happen. But I do know that I don't want any regrets." He told her.
Sam was confused. "What're you talking about?"
Tate smiled at her, before lowering himself onto one knee, making Sam's eyes widen. "Sam, the time we were apart was the worst time of my life. But now that we're together again, I'm gonna do everything I can to keep it that way." He took a breath. "I don't know what the future holds, but I know that I want you in it."
Sam was stunned at what she was hearing. "Tate?"
He smiled up at her, then pulled the ring out of his jacket pocket. He opened the box, revealing it to her. "Sam, would you make me the happiest man alive, and marry me?" He finally asked the question.
Sam's tears had now changed from one's of sadness to one's of pure joy. She eagerly nodded her head. "Yes. Yes!" She exclaimed.
Tate took hold of her hand and slipped the ring onto her finger. He stood up and the two came together in a passionate kiss, displaying all their love and affection for one another. They came apart, and looked deep into each others eyes. "I love you." Tate said to her.
She kissed him again. "I love you too."
They hugged each other tightly, burying their faces into each other. Sam pulled away, and looked at Tate in that way. He immediately knew what she was thinking, and kissed her deeply. She reciprocated in just as much passion.
He tapped her thigh and she jumped into his arms. He carried her into his bedroom, still making out.
~~
The two were now cuddling in Tate's bed together. He ran his fingers through her hair as she laid her head on his chest, an arm wrapped around his torso. "I told the group to stay at ours tonight." They looked at each other. "We should probably head over there."
Tate nodded his head, and the two kissed once again. They got changed back into their clothes and left the apartment. "Let's go, fiancée." He quipped.
She laughed at him. "That's never getting old."
