Mornings were always the worst for Enola. After having a peaceful night all to herself without any thoughts or dreams but her own, her mind is flooded with everyone's thoughts all at one, no matter how zombie-like they may be. It is like being flooded with thousands of DMS all at once, and none of them are from people you care about.
Naturally, sharing a dorm with five girls didn't make it any better as she was constantly hearing everything they were thinking. Most of the thoughts coming from Terra specifically, who never seemed to stop worrying about what others think of her.
Stretching herself out of bed, Enola groggily rubbed the sleep out of her eyes as she tried to energize herself for their first day of real school. Looking around the room, she could see that Musa and Terra were already awake, although they were all still in their pajamas.
"Did you see that meme I sent," Musa smiled, turning over to look at the two girls, as she lightly chuckled, "it me."
"Not yet," Enola mumbled as she reached over to grab her phone, noticing she had received a message from Musa a few minutes ago. She didn't care about the fact that she had kicked her covers half off her body causing her legs to tangle themselves in the blankets.
Terra scoffed, nervousness flooding her brain, "Totally," she lied. Both twins' eyes glowed as Enola raised her eyebrow at the earth fairy at the white lie.
"Actually, no, I didn't," Terra sighed, as she noticed their eyes turn, "Can you tell when people are lying? Not that that was a lie, that was more of a social nicety, a white lie or a non-lie."
Musa shook her head, "Not a lie detector, just emotions."
Enola laughed as she stood up from her bed, moving to grab her clothes for the day, "I, however, can tell when someone lies," she smiled, opening her drawer to grab a pair of shorts, "But don't worry Ter. I won't tell."
Terra nervously laughed, as she awkwardly looked down at her feet, "Cool. Cool."
All the girls returned back to what they were doing until Terra spoke once again. Enola began to pull out the rest of her clothes along with her toiletries while Musa played on her phone. Terra, however, was still uncomfortable as she tried to remove her bra with her shirt still on, "So I don't know, um, I was trying to pick out my clothes for the day..."
"I like the green sweater," Enola said, jokingly, knowing that Terra was not worried about whether or not the green sweater would match her outfit. She didn't say anything however as she continued to grab her clothes for the day, choosing to wear her brown lace-up boots since they would be outside.
"Yeah, I feel it," Musa nodded her head, as she looked up from her phone ance again, "Do you need me to turn around so you can change. Is that what this is about?"
"No, no," Terra rushed, laughing once again as she pointed to her clothes, "I'm-That's fine," she said, trying to remain calm before she grabbed her clothes and walked out the room.
The poor girl was obviously insecure about changing in front of the girls. Enola knew how terrible it felt to be insecure about one's body and truly hopes Terra didn't think they were judging her for not feeling comfortable changing in front of the girls. If it weren't for them being twins, they might have felt the same way.
"Do you want coffee," Enola looked over at her sister, "Since both showers are taken?"
Musa nodded her head, kicking her feet up so she could roll out of bed, barely looking back as she tossed her phone on the covers, "Sure. I am going to need some energy to get through the day."
Enola laughed, knowing all the well how true that statement was. The mind fairies were extremely keen to learn how to control their abilities, "Hopefully, people were a bit less energetic because of the party last night."
"Right," Musa looked back at her sister before sarcastically rolling her eyes, "Because everyone knows how parties are the best depressant."
"Whatever," Enola grins, reaching to grab one of the mugs the school provides before handing it to her sister. Coffee was one of the few things that managed to keep the girls alive nowadays, after constantly feeling their classmates' exhaustion.
Pouring themselves both a mug full of black coffee, Enola sighed into her mug, allowing the small of the chicory to calm her nerves. Taking a small sip, the mind fairy relished in the warm feeling of the coffee going down her throat.
The creaking of their suite door stopped both girls, who spun around to see Stella poorly trying to sneak into their dorm after obviously spending the night with someone else. Enola's eyes glimmered as disgusting images of her night with Sky, the specialist both Stella and Bloom liked, flood into her brain.
Enola quickly gulped her coffee, trying to wash them away from her mind. She quickly tried to focus her thoughts elsewhere.
"Hm, that outfit looks so similar to yesterday's," Musa smirked, noticing the slightly rumpled clothes on Stella, before coyly adding, "Same designer?"
Stella glared at the cocky mind fairy, although it was obvious she was too tired to truly care about what Musa said to her. "Do you know how I feel about that joke, or should I tell you?"
"It is a bit obvious," Enola groaned, trying her hardest to ignore all of Stella thought's which appeared to be more annoying than Terra's.
"Where's Bloom?"
Stella ignored the two girls as she looked around the room for the fire fairy. It was obvious she was still hoping that her plan had worked out in her favor, especially after her night with Sky, which Enola knew was more of a power move.
"She's had a rough night," Musa said, choosing not to say that she was in her dorm.
"Thanks to you," Enola sighed, walking over to sit on the couch. Bloom's thoughts had been apparent to the fairy all night as the ginger was constantly fretting about whether or not the burned one would come after her. She was also worried about her parents and if Stella would be angry with her. The fire fairy kept both Enola and herself up until morning with her thoughts, barely managing a few hours of sleep.
"I didn't think those things were real," Musa sighed as she felt Stella's guilt wash over her in waves.
Enola nodded, a shiver running up her spine at the memory of the burned one infiltrating her brain, "But we all saw it, and it was creepy as hell."
"It looked like it wanted to kill her," Musa added, moving to stand near her sister. Enola didn't say anything after that, thinking back to the burned one's thoughts.
They were more fearful than violent, almost as if they were sick.
"What about my ring," Stella asked, her voice steady as she showed no signs of concern over Bloom's health.
Bloom had obviously been hearing the entire conversation as she walked into the room, pulling her hair into a ponytail as she looked at Stella with a guilty expression, "That burned..thing took it."
Stella's fists balled up as she walked up to Bloom, "What?"
"Calm down, princess," Musa said, her face wrinkling in distaste for Stella's dramatic reaction to the loss of one of her rings. The girl could always just buy another.
"Don't tell me to calm down," Stella waved her hands in the air as if to silence Musa, "And don't use my title as an insult."
"Wait," Bloom giggled, not aware that Stella was, in fact, the princess of Solaria, "Are you actually a princess," she asked, a smile on her lips as she was amazed by the fact.
"Yes," Stella sighed, speaking to Bloom as if she were a toddler, "And my mum is the queen, and the ring you lost is one of the crown jewels of Solaria."
Bloom's entire face fell as Stella spoke those words, along with Enola's, as she quickly realized what that meant for the girls. Naturally, they would lose one of the most important artifacts of the royal family. A small piece of metal that was easily worth more than Enola's entire house. Throw in Musa and they would still come up short.
"I know that might not mean much to a First Worlder," Stella scoffed, as she crossed her arms towards Bloom, "So feel free to ask your suitemate how big of a screw up that is."
Enola and Musa were speechless as they both knew they had truly messed up. Or rather than Bloom had messed up for losing it. Or rather than Stella had messed up for giving it to Bloom.
"Almost as big as giving it to her in the first place," Aisha snapped, walking out of the bathroom with a towel atop her head to stop the water from dripping on the floor.
"Dowling has the creature locked up," Aisha added, "Which you would know if you were here last night when she gave us an earful."
"And if people knew that a burned one was loose in the First World," Enola began before shaking her head at the thought of how chaotic the school would be. If she thought people's thoughts were overbearing now then she would faint from the busy thoughts of a school full of students about to die.
"Disaster," Musa lightheartedly shrugged, trying to help Bloom understand why Stella was so upset. All the girls knew that Bloom was not the main person to blame, as she hardly knew what a burned one was.
"Well," Bloom swallowed, worriedly looking over to Stella, "I didn't tell Dowling that I lost the ring, and I'm sure if we do then-"
"We will do no such thing," Stella cut her off once again, her face holding no matter of discussion over the topic, "I will figure it out after class, but for now, no none says anything to anyone," the princess spoke before raising one eyebrow at the girls, "Got it?"
None of the girls said a word as they all silently focused their eyes on anything other than the princess. Stella may be a bitch, but they knew better than to go against Solarian royalty. The Queen had enough power to kick every girl in that dorm out of Alfea just for giving her a dirty look.
Enola simply sighed, raising her now lukewarm coffee up to her chest as she allowed her eyes to focus outside. Their suite's window gave a perfect view of the stone circle where their first class would be. A smile fell on her lips as she excitedly thought about her first day of magic.
☹ ☻
Mrs. Dowling spoke to the fairies as they all sat in the stone circle, her voice revealing all her years of wisdom as she slowly allowed her fingers to skim over the Vessel, "Magic lives in the very fabric of nature," the headmistress said in a very monotone voice, "In here in our circle of stone it is magnified. The Vessel tests your ability to channel that magic."
Enola nervously looked over to the Vessel, scared of how she would be able to channel her abilities in the form of magic. She had never been able to create a tangible form of power with her abilities.
"Further down the line, you may learn to connect other elements," Dowling spoke, walking past Bloom, "But your first year is all about the element you were born with."
"Earth," Mrs. Dowling called, waiting for all the earth students to line up so they could present their abilities. Terra was one of the first students to stand up as she excitedly raised her hands over the Vessel. The earth fairy smiled as she calmly guided a small sapling to grow from the metal bowl.
"Soil. Sand. Rock. All matter of plant life."
Enola enviously looked over at Terra as she expertly spun the plants together to create a braided structure. Earth fairies had the potential to be one of the world's most disastrous fairies because of how much they could do with their abilities.
"Water."
Aisha was their next friend to go up to the center. Her hands raised at either side of her to pull water up from the rock, leaving the entire area extremely dry. The water particles began to rise up in a crystal-like shape as it melded in and out of its shape.
"The lakes and oceans of the world. Or the molecules that exist in the organisms around us."
The entire sight was extremely calming as all the students watched Aisha manipulate the water to create a fountain effect of sorts. Enola would have never guessed how stressed Aisha was if it weren't for her telepathic powers.
"Air."
Dowling called next, causing an auburn-haired fairy to confidently strut to the Vessel, barely looking back at her classmates. Enola had never seen the fairy before, but she was glad, as it was obvious the girl was not good news. It didn't take a mind fairy to know that the girl was full of herself.
"Temperature. Speed. Sound. It's power and electrical properties."
The girl announced herself as Beatrix raised her hands in the air. To Enola''s surprise, electricity appeared between her hands as little lightning bolts fell into the Vessel. Beatrix's powers had the ability to kill someone in seconds. Technically most fairies' powers could be considered lethal, but something about Beatrix's mind when her powers revealed themselves to the class held dark intentions. Her emotions were not happy.
"The Mind."
Dowling called all the mind fairies up, causing Musa to grimly smile at her sister. Enola was extremely nervous as she began to chew on her lip, noticing there were only two other mind fairies in their grade. With a small huff, the girl pushed herself off the stone bench with her hands, walking to stand in line with the others as they began to summon their powers.
Enola pleadingly looked over to Musa, trying to convince her to take second place in line so she could be third. The music-loving twin sighed before holding out her fist, prompting her sister to do the same.
"Rock. Paper. Scissors. One, two, three, four," Musa muttered before both girls raised their fists, revealing that Enola had lost. A smirk fell on the black-haired fairy's face as she shrugged, "Sorry, sis."
Enola groaned as she stood in front of the male mind fairy who had walked up first. He wasn't scrawny like how most people would expect a male mind fairy to appear. Instead, he was a rather bulky guy with medium-length blonde hair. He slowly walked up to the Vessel.
"Thoughts. Memories. Dreams."
Dowling lectured the class before looking at the first mind fairy in the line expectantly. Enola's hoped that his powers would not be so visual so that she could get an idea of what she was supposed to do.
Unfortunately, the fairy in front of her specialized in projecting images, which made it extremely easy for the student to simply summon power from the Vessel before he revealed the image of a tiger to the class.
Enola tried to hide her disappointment as Dowling signaled for her to go up next. Sucking in her cheeks, the mind fairy walked up to the Vessel before firmly placing both hands inside the plate as if she would be able to pull her powers out from the bottom.
Enola's eyes glowed a faint pink as she tried to read Dowling's thoughts, imagining that she would know what the girl was supposed to do, but instead, she could only hear the headmistress impatiently wonder why she wasn't doing anything.
"So much for that," Enola muttered to herself before nervously pushing a stray piece of hair behind her ear.
The entire group of students began to murmur as to why her eyes were glowing, yet her powers weren't revealing themselves. Little did they know that Enola was listening to every one of their thoughts and was struggling to separate them from her own.
Dowling walked up to Enola, noticing the girl's hesitance, "Enola, you are focusing too much on the voices and not the power they hold. Allow yourself to see its power," she whispered before walking to stand further away from the girl.
Enola nodded her head as she closed her eyes, trying once again to harness her powers. Taking a deep breath, Enola visualized every single thought in her head like a string of music, the same as how Musa read emotions. Slowly sorting through all the different tunes in her mind, Enola was able to harness on her own, focusing solely on the pink sound wave that was in the forefront of her focus.
Swallowing the lump that was growing in her throat as she began to doubt if her idea would work, Enola raised her hands, creating positive emotions as she tried to imagine a pink stream of music appearing in front of her.
Just as Enola was ready to give up and ask Dowling to skip her, a gasp came from behind her. Hesitantly opening her eyes, the mind fairy couldn't believe what she was seeing.
Between her two palms, just like Beatrix, her powers had surfaced, but instead of electricity, it was like a pink sound wave pulsing between her hands as if it had a life of its own.
That wasn't what the class was gasping about; however, as Enola looked up from her hands, she was able to see that all the different sound waves she had assigned to people's thoughts had surrounded her in a shield of sorts. The murmurs of everyone's thoughts lowly whisper amongst each other from the colorful sound waves as they all mixed together to create alight din noise of sorts. Everyone was pointing to different colors trying to find their own personal whisp of thought before it fell back into rainbow encircling Enola.
Enola was amazed as she laughed in awe. Focusing back on her powers, she closed her palms, clearing her mind as all the thought waves disappeared in a cloud of magical dust.
"Good job, Enola," Mrs. Dowling nodded her head at the student with a small smile, "Keep up the good work."
Musa walked up next and did the same thing that Dowling had instructed Enola to do. Her powers didn't appear as sound waves but instead a pulsating purple ball of music that played a calming tune. It almost looked like Musa had made her own planet between her hands as she gleefully spun it around.
Once the mind fairies had sat down, Musa and Enola couldn't help but slightly fangirl over their discovery, as they touched fingers in glee wiggling them in excitement. Neither girl had ever been able to create tangible magic before.
"Whatever your element, the emotions underlying it are the same for all fairies," Dowling added in her lecture before calling on the last element.
"Fire."
Bloom hesitantly walked up to the stone plate, rubbing her hands on her jeans as she nervously looked over to Dowling. Enola could tell that Bloom shared the same concern she had: how to use her powers.
Enola was lucky enough to have already practiced her abilities every single day, making expanding her powers a lot easier. Bloom was new to their world and her powers, however, so it was not a shock that she was so nervous.
Blooms thought's were interestingly not about how to use her powers at all, but rather how to subdue them. The fire fairy was so scared of blowing the entire school up that she didn't even seem to worry about if she would be able to summon them.
The fear was what stunted Bloom's progress, and Enola had no idea how to help the red-haired girl.
This left everyone to painfully watch as Bloom hunched over the Vessel, her eyes clenched shut as she tried to force even the smallest flame to flicker. Her grip on the device tightened to the point where her knuckles were bone white as a small flicker appeared.
"Push past your doubts," Farah Dowling instructed, "Just focus on clear positive feelings."
However, Bloom didn't seem to benefit from her advice as the flame seemed to die down even more. Leaving a small spark that was so small, it could barely be seen.
Enola looked over to Musa to see if she could help their suitemate, but the mind fairy looked just as helpless as the rest of them. The honey-haired fairy knew her sister could take in some of Bloom's fear but understood that she didn't feel comfortable with using her powers like that just yet. Not after what happened last time.
"How about your parents," Enola spoke up, noticing a thought appear in Bloom's mind of her visit home. It seemed to hold a glimmer of positivity despite the guilt.
Aisha winced as she nodded, "Focus on how much you love them."
It didn't help, however, as Bloom still did not show any improvement as she huffed in annoyance, "It's not working."
"Focus on your," Dowling began but was cut off by Bloom once again.
"Emotions," Bloom snapped, looking up at Dowling with an upset reaction, "I know what I am supposed to do. It isn't working. Move on."
It was obvious to Enola that she wasn't the only one who was still new to her powers in many ways, especially when it came to control. Perhaps she and Bloom had more in common than she thought. The idea made the mind fairy feel a little bit less alone.
