『Chapter 38』

The next morning came, and of course, Finny was the first to find his body as planned. Each servant was given duties from Sebastian so they could have an alibi. If anyone you were worried about was you. If anyone saw you wandering off the night, you would be the main suspect.

You pushed through the crowd, trying to get in the scene. "What do we tell the young master?" Meyrin cried out, holding up her glasses. You swore you had never seen Meyrin and Finnian so devastated. At the end of the hall, you saw Ciel running down to you. He gave you a look as you gave him a nod.

"Young master..."

His eyes widened as he slowly stepped inside. He approached Sebastian but Meyrin held him back, trying to stop him. Ciel refused and tried to get away. Finny blocked his path but Ciel managed to pushed them both.

"Sebastian... how long are going to be like that?" Ciel mumbled, looking down at Sebastian. He pulled the rake out of Sebastian as he then sat on top of him. "This is an order! Sebastian, get up this instant!" He began to pull his shirt and slapping him multiple times. Before he could land another hit, Bard gripped his wrist in the air. "Young master... Give it a rest will you?"

"He's already... dead." Bard continued, facing away. Ciel turned back to Sebastian, he muttered something into his ear that he could only hear. "It will probably be better if we move him," Bard said while he walked up to you. "This is... Tragic..." You muttered, playing along. You put a hand to Finny, attempting to soothe him. Meyrin struggled to keep Ciel calm in her grip. Ciel yanked the Phantomhive pin from Sebastian's coat as Arthur began his investigation.

"There are signs of trauma in his head. He might have been hit from behind." Arthur said, checking his head. You stepped up, continuing his words, "But that didn't work so the culprit tried again,"

"We can't stand around this corpse forever," Grey spoke up. You glanced at him, thinking how good his acting was.

  >>>

By now, everyone was gathered in the dining hall. Only, one seat was empty. Mr. Phelps was missing. Arthur stood up and suggested to check on him. You pondered, your mind racing in places. "This wasn't in the plan..." You muttered to yourself.

When everyone got to Ciel's bedroom Arthur tried to open the door, only to find it was locked. "Locked! Where's the key?!" Arthur shouted, staring back at Ciel. "Sebastian held the key to my room. Now that he's dead, I don't even know where it is." Ciel answered. You let out a sigh, tired of all the murder going on.

"So how are we--"

"Just bash it open," You said, twisting the door know a few more times before you kicked it open. You turned around, seeing them all wide-eyed. "What? You think such a girl like me can't do something as little as this?"

"Hurry up with it then. I haven't had my dessert yet." Gray mumbled with a fork in his mouth, his hand holding a plate of dishes. One by one, they stepped in. "I could've done that myself, missy. But I'm glad I held back, I get to see you do it. Wicked!" Gray sauntered close to you, whispering in your ear. "You know, when this is all over, how bout I take you out, aye?" You internally groaned and walked away, not wanting to deal with him any longer.

"Mr. Phelps!!" Arthur yelled out barging into Ciel's room. He stopped when he saw Mr. Phelps lying on the floor, lifeless.

Only, you didn't see this one coming.

After Arthur examined Patrick's body, he found two small puncture wounds on his neck. Arthur said they could have been stab wounds or an injection of poison. He then stated that two puncture marks to the neck are similar to the bite of Carmilla the vampire, but of course, it would be ridiculous and unscientific to suggest it. He then noticed that the clock beside was on the ground and broken. The clock said 2:38, suggesting Patrick' time of death

Arthur suggested to all of the guests to analyze the case. Ciel told Tanaka to guide the guests to the drawing-room where you all should discuss the case.

"Y/n," Ciel called you as the others left the scene. "Did you everything right?" He asked. You nodded, eyes wandering off the room. "Yeah. Picked up the shards and maybe out them back after this mess. Only, I didn't know about this one." You answered back. Ciel nodded at your statement. "Do you have any idea?" He asked.

"Umm... Earl? Aren't you coming?" Both of you turned to Arthur who was right by the door. "Yes, be right with you. Give us some time." He demanded. Arthur nodded and walked away.

"So?" Asked Ciel. "Hold on, let me look at him," you said as you reached the body. As careful as you could, starting from his coat to his wound.

You recognized the marks, "This looks like.... snake bites?" You figured it out. Ciel hummed, agreeing with you. "Snakebites? But there could be no snake around here." Ciel stated. You wiped your hand, walking back to him.

"Yeah... even if there is, it shouldn't be deadly as this." You spoke up. "There's someone else in this mansion. Someone familiar with this kind of stuff." You continued. Ciel thought for a while as then he cleared his throat. "Fine then. Let's go back to the others."

>>>

"So the butler was murdered last?"

Arthur drew an alibi list for the case. It was written there that almost everyone was suspected to be Sebastian's murder, including you. The only one who was innocent between those three murders was only Arthur himself. Sebastian was the only suspect for killing Phelps since he was the only one who kept the key to Ciel's room.

"But wait... I have something..." Irene spoke up. She put a hand under her chin as everyone looked at her. "I thought I heard some rumbling outside my door so I went to check. Peeking out the door, I say you." She admitted, pointing out to you. As quickly as that, all eyes were on you.

Dammit! I should've been more careful!

"Y/n?" You heard Ciel called you. You dragged your gaze to him. He looked at you, eyes giving you a sign to figure it out. "What were you doing?" You swallowed a breath, trying to look normal while all eyes landed on you. "I was getting a pillow for the young master. I met up with Sebastian on the way as he then took it away from me." You calmly said. Ciel gave you a nod at that. Arthur hummed, processing your words. When everyone went back to discussing the case, you released a sigh of relief.

The discussion continued as Arthur came up with another hunch. "That means, there is no one person who could have killed all victims," Arthur said as he showed the alibi list. Everyone was shocked by his theory.

"That's Enough! If it can't be one person, then it has to be the pair who came together." Woodley stood up as he pointed to Grimsby and Irene. They begin fighting amongst each other until Woodley said he didn't want to be killed and started to leave. Ciel told him to sit down, and Woodley accused Ciel of having all of this planned out from the beginning. "You planned this all, didn't you?! You little—"

You stepped up between him and Ciel. "Finish that word. I dare you." You clenched your fist, hiding Ciel behind you. Woodley clicked his tongue, "I don't take orders from a maid!" He raised his fist to you before you held it, inches away from your jaw. "I may be a maid, but don't even think of putting up any harm to the young master. Especially while we, servants are here." You warned him sternly, putting pressure on your grip on his fist. He looked a little bit frightened by your words as he grunted through his gritted teeth.

"Woodley, the one who is telling you to sit down is me. So sit down." Ciel said, taking his teacup to his lips. You moved away beside him. "Don't tell me what to do!!" Woodley's fist nearly collided with Ciel's face but Tanaka grabbed his arm, restraining him down.

"Sorry, Mr. Woodley. Maybe you should've listened to the maid. While you're in this manor, if you attempt to hurt the young master, no matter who you are, we servants will not tolerate the offense. Please take my advice." Tanaka declared, pushing Woodley down on the floor. You grinned silently, lowering your gaze.

"Tanaka, that's enough." Ciel broke the silence. Tanaka nodded in reply. After Woodley was settled, Arthur continued to solve the case. "Professor, please tell us what should we do," Ciel stated.

"If you don't mind, please give us a guide around the manor. I want to look for the key which Sebastian had." Arthur suggested. Ciel sighed and agreed.

"Y/n. Take them to the cellar."

"Right... Follow me." You nodded at the writer, Finny and Baldroy tagged along with you. Ciel, Arthur, and Gray followed us behind. You grabbed a lantern to illuminate your way.

"We're here, everyone," you said as you slowly opened the cellar door. The door creaked as Cel stepped through.

"Well then let's be respectful..." Arthur said then he pulled off the cloth that was covering Sebastian. "Let's take a look." Arthur began to examining Sebastian to look for the key. After checking on Sebastian for quite a while. They couldn't find the key, so they decided to check on his room. You sighed tiredly, seeing how this night was going on and on.

"Let's see his room. Follow me." Bard was one to lead. You were last on the line. You walked to the door until you heard Sebastian sat up. The others were already on the stairs.

"Leaving so soon?" Sebastian asked. You pursed your lips, leaning to the door. "Yeah, this room smells."

"Where'd you keep the key anyway?" You asked out. Sebastian grinned, raising one hand to thump his torso. He threw up the key which you were looking for. You nodded, snapping your fingers to him. "'Course you did."

>>>

After looking for the key in each of the guest's belongings, they couldn't find it anywhere. Well, of course, the key was never left, Sebastian.

"Excuse me, master," Finny called Ciel.

"If you don't mind, I shall look for it outside." He continued with confidence in his tone. You glanced at him, opening up your mouth to say a word until Meyrin cut through. "I-I'll go too," Bard called out to them when they drifted off outside. He excused himself, following them.

Ciel let out a frustrated sigh and faced you. "Y/n, brought them back inside before something bad happens." He requested, crossing his legs. You breathed a sigh. "I'll get them."

>>>

"You guys! You can't do anything in this storm!!" You shouted, hopefully enough for them to hear in the weather. Shielding your eyes with your arm, you pushed past the thick wind. You saw Finny and Meyrin fell to the ground, crying their eyes out. Bard was desperately trying to calm her.

Tanaka showed up next to you, handing you an umbrella. "They'll listen to you, mother duck." He smiled at you. You grumbled at the nickname he used. "Oh no, not you too, Gramps." You sighed, unfolding the umbrella. "You guys," you called them, hovering the umbrella above them. "Y/n..."

"What you said about Sebastian... that's quite right." You pleaded. "I'm sure if he was here right now, he'd say 'How can we call ourselves Phantomhive servants if we couldn't even overcome such a crisis?'" You tried to get them back on track. "Yes!" They all replied in unison.

"I know that you know him longer than I do, but I think I know how much he meant to you. He meant so much to me too." You squatted with them, putting a hand to Finny's shoulder. He sniffed, looking up at you. He sniffed, looking up at you. Somehow, he saw a little hope in your eye. "Now, what do you say we get inside and find our culprit?"

One by one, they nodded in agreement, smiling at your words. You helped them stood up as suddenly, Finny threw his arms around you. You froze insight, not really knowing what to do. Later on, Meyrin and Bard joined the embrace. You were taken back, mouth gaped slightly for you had never had these many people to like you. You breathed a laugh, closing your eyes as you returned their embrace, hugging them tightly. These servants were something else. They were not just any servant, they were your family. You loved them though you felt like you were still new.

"...okay. Let's go back inside before you guys catch a cold."

Walking back to the door, "I've prepared your towels." Tanaka greeted you by the door. "Thank you, Tanaka." You chimed. Each of the servants took one towel and dried themselves. That was when a knock on the door was heard. All eyes landed on the door. Tanaka reached the door while you saw the trio geared themselves up.

"About time he showed up," you muttered under your breath, grabbing a couple of knives to blend with the others. The door opened to reveal a man about fifty years old. Seriously? This was what he came up with?!

>>>

"Young master. We've captured someone suspicious." You announced. The guests turned their heads to you as the boys brought Sebastian, or rather Jeremy.

"What in the world?!" One by one, they threw out more questions regarding Jeremy's presence. "I'm a bit surprised myself." Lau stood up and walked to Jeremy. He patted his shoulder as he cheerfully asked his name.

"It's been a long time, Jeremy," Ciel stated, walking up to him. Lau raised an eyebrow "Earl, you know this old guy?"

"This man is the Reverend Jeremy Rathborne." Ciel introduced him to the crowd.  "Well then, everyone. Please call me Jeremy." Jeremy smiled. Ciel talked things out with Jeremy and said that he was willing to give a hand to our case. After gaining trust in Jeremy, all of them started to discuss the case with him and thought maybe he could help us.

"Well then, let's go to the wine cel-" Arthur stood up but Jeremy stopped him. "Stop. Move each body to a separate room." Jeremy suggested as he explained why. Ciel nodded, "Fine. You guys, move the bodies to separate rooms." He told the trio.

"Yes, sir."

"Not you, Y/n." Ciel paused, stopping your tracks. "What?"

"I still need you here." He gave you a knowing look as you nodded. Jeremy stood up, brushing his coat. "Meanwhile, would you mind if I change my clothes?"

"You-... Reverend, I believe my dead butler's clothes might fit you." Ciel sighed. He glanced at you, telling you to take him to Sebastian's room. "Fine. Follow me, old man." You walked off, opening the door for him to pass.

"You know, you could've—" You didn't finish your words as Sebastian picked you up and started to run. "Hey! Put me down!" You tried to push him off.  He chuckled lightly, "I never thought you could act well, kitten,"

"You could've gone with a better disguise?" You mumbled, looking at him, disturbed by his mask. "It's for temporary." He simply said. He placed you on his bed when you arrived and he quickly changed into his usual outfit, taking off the face.

"The servants are gonna move me. I have to be quick. Stay here." He spoke up. You kept staring at him that he asked you what's wrong. "You look so stupid with the face I hope you know that." You told, he didn't bother to reply. When he finished, he gave you a quick kiss and took off.

>>>

After they finished moving the bodies and Sebastian got back into his disguise, the two of you went back to the others. You were told to stay back and helped the trio with the rations for tonight.

You pulled out a chair and sat down. Resting your head on the table, you let out a tired sigh. "So, you think we can trust this old guy?" Bard asked then he sat down on a chair next to you. "I thought everyone has trusted him," you said as you lifted your head to them.

"Yeah, maybe we should trust him," Finny remarked. He was very determined to find the killer. "Well, I'm just sayin'. We just met him though." Bard shrugged.

"It's better than having no help at all," you jumped in. Standing up from your seat, you checked on the shelves, finding it half empty.

"We're out of stock? I thought we have enough for at least three days?" You turned around, putting your hands on your waist. "I know. The storm hasn't stopped for these couple of days." Finny said.

"Not to mention Earl Grey who eat massively," Bard said. You released a tired breath then sat back in the chair and rest your head on the table again. Jeremy then came by to give a hand.

"If you come here to get something to eat, we're out of stock," Bard said glancing at the empty shelves. "Yeah, that stupid Gray ate it all, and he wouldn't stop flirting with me," you muttered, standing up from the seat. "The only things we have are soybeans and flour," you added.
"Hmm... do you have herbs here?" Jeremy asked which Finny replied with a yes.

"Excellent! And you have soybeans. We can make soy meat." He added. The others were confused. Jeremy explained what he meant and he began to tell you to do our jobs. More likely Sebastian.

"I'll get the herbs!" Finny cheered.
"I'll boil the soybeans," Bard said as he patted the soybeans barrel.
"Sure...I'll prepare the desserts and the plates and stuff," You said, shrugging lazily.
"I'll go get the wine with Tanaka- Ah!" Meyrin cut herself. "What?" Said you.

"I just remembered. I found something bad while checking on Ms. Irene's bag back then." Meyrin stuttered, replaying the scene in her head. She found a vial filled with a dark red liquid in Irene's bags. She also said that she thought Irene was a vampire because she was twelve years older than Grimsby but dismissed the idea.

"I don't think I'd be surprised if she was a vampire for real." She finished.

"Hmm... that's something to think about." Jeremy thought.

"Unusual is the right word I think," you jumped in.

"But now it's time for us to make dinner. I'll give you guys a hand." He then took off his coat and neatly placed it on a chair, proceeding to help you with the meal.
