Backstory:
Matheo Bartholomew Raphael Lyam d'Hunolstein was born on December 2, 1783, to Aglae d'Hunolstein and Gilbert de Lafayette. Though he was illegitimate, he knew who his father was. Everyone knew who his father was.
His entire childhood, he was belittled for being a bastard child. He grew bitter, and began to hate his father. At the tender age of five, he was beaten in the street for being illegitimate. No one ever found out who beat him.
Shortly after he was beaten, Bart truly met his Aunt Yvette for the first time. Having heard what happened, she came to see him and make sure he was okay. This was the start of a close, almost mother-son, relationship.
Bart had a rather normal childhood. At least, as normal as one could have during the French Revolution.
It all changed in 1798.
One day, he met a girl. Lya Elyna Monique Ines de Champlain was her name, though everyone knew her as Lya. She was sweeter than honey and one of the most beautiful girls he'd ever seen.
Well, long story short, they started talking and ended up in bed. After a night of passionate lovemaking, the two realized they weren't attracted to one another. Bart realized he liked men, and Lya found she liked women. Despite this, the two would be friends to the end.
It was the next month that Lya figured out she was pregnant. And Bart was the father.
Being only 15 and 14, respectively, and unmarried, neither were ready to be parents. Nor did they want to marry someone they didn't love. And, pregnant with his child or not, there was no way Lya's family would let her marry him. So they kept the pregnancy secret, up until the birth.
Sadly, during Lya's pregnancy, Bart's mother died. On June 26, 1798, Aglae died, devastating her children. Bart swore to name his and Lya's child after Aglae.
Finally, on September 17, 1798, Andrew Philippe Aristide Gabriel was born. He was one month premature and the spitting image of his father. Upon his birth, Lya was kicked out of her home for being a "whorish fornicator". Thus, she moved in with Bart's family.
While Bart ran off smoking, drinking, fighting, and sleeping with every hot guy he could, Lya stayed home with Andrew. Emile loved his little nephew and Lucie absolutely adored Andrew, always helping to take care of him whenever she could.
The family lived as happily as they could, until January of 1801. Lucie, Bart's baby sister, one of the only people he cared about, died of malaria. The date was January 29. Upon her death, Bart began to smoke, drink, and whore around more. He engaged in self-destructive activities.
It was in August of that year that Bart contracted scarlet fever. He fell deeply ill. His loved ones believed he could pull through, that he could survive. However, Bart had just...lost his will to live. He finally died on September 17, 1801. It was his son's third birthday.
