The hour before Valerie's funeral was scarily quiet. No noise was heard inside of James' house, and no birds chirped. The sun itself seemed to be in mourning, hiding beside the clouds.

James sat at his desk in a black suit. The four letters from his dead best friend on the desk, and a blank, lined piece of paper with a pen laid beside it.

His face was buried in his hands as he thought of what to say. What to write.

But eventually, he let his feelings lead for the first time.

Dear Valerie,

I got your letters, unfortunately. It's unfortunate but you're gone now. Even though you'll never read this... this is my reply:

You're right, for once. I am mad. I'm mad at you for not telling me anything. I'm mad at the world, the universe for letting this happen to you. I'm mad at myself for not realizing you were sick.

But it's too late now.

So the only thing that I can say, is I love you. I've loved you ever since we first met actually. Sadly, I can't say it to you now that you're gone.
