SLEEP TRANSPORTS the blonde kook away from all the worries that lie in the front of her mind. It was the only time where the blonde could fully escape from every worry or problem that plagued her mental health. She often wished that her sleep could last forever, that she would just float away in endless dreams and never have to come back to reality. But something always makes her bright blue eyes peel open. From her alarm clock to someone barging in, demanding her to waste time on them, she was never safe. There was always something or someone that would interrupt her beautiful and solace peace.ย
Kennedy wished that more things brought her comfort like sleeping, but once she woke up things always seemed to never give her a break. She should be living the dream, on the outside being a rich socialite sounded perfect, but it was the biggest thing that weighed her down. Kennedy hoped and prayed that there would be a time where she could run and never look back, she dreamed of a life where no one knew her name, the thought always brought a smile to her face.
It was hard for her to accept her reality, she felt such detest for every aspect of it. Kennedy loved to live in her head, dreaming of the times that used to be. She was a daydreamer at heart, not many knew that except for her closest friends. It was a replacement for sleep, it was a getaway that she was able to escape to during the day. The reality she was in made her be in a constant state of panic, for once in her life she just wanted to be free. Kennedy wanted to feel the rush of adrenaline through her viens as she did something that she wasn't supposed to do. But that wasn't in the cards right now, she was stuck wishing for something or someone to pull her into something that could make her feel free.
Getting woken up by a harsh slam of her bedroom door wasn't exactly what Kennedy had planned on this bright and calm morning. She really was expecting the furious attitude that oozed off her mother either. Kennedy sent her a confused and tired glance, "Uh hi?"
"What the hell happened at the boneyard last night?"
The curt words from Cynthia made Kennedy's exhausted body jump, Kennedy gave her a worried glance, "Nothing too crazy, just the pogues acted all psycho and brought out a gun-"
"A gun?" Cynthia hissed in surprise, Kennedy coiled back a bit from her tone, knowing she spilled the wrong thing to her mother, "I was talking about you and Rafe,"
Kennedy sat up, giving her a once over, "Mom, how do you know-"
"I got a call from Ward this morning, saying that Rafe was all mopey because you two got into a fight last night and you've been ignoring his calls,"
Kennedy rolled her eyes, refusing to look over at her phone which she knew would have billions of notifications from the boy in question, "Mom, I kind of have been sleeping and haven't had-"
"You've been ignoring them since last night,"
"Mom look," Kennedy began, her small body slipping out of her large plush bed in the process, "Last night was a lot and I don't feel like dealing with Rafe right now okay?"
"What's that supposed to mean?" Cynthia seethed, crossing her arms as she looked furiously over to her nonchalant daughter.
Kennedy sent her a weary gaze, "Dealing with Rafe takes a lot out of me, I just don't have the energy to talk things out with him right now,"
"What are people going to think Kennedy?" Cynthia gasped, "I can't have my daughter looking like she hates her boyfriend,"
"Mom, everyone already knows we have a rocky relationship," Kennedy snipped, eyes falling on her reflection in her vanity as she brushed out her blonde snarls. "It's only a matter of time before me and Rafe finally break it off,"
Cynthia stormed over to the blonde, ripping the brush out of her hand, leading a vibrating pain to spread through Kennedy's scalp. The small girl yelped in pain, a few tears brimming in her eyes as she looked at her mother in the mirror, "Mom, what-"
"Our family is finally starting to get quite close with the Camerons," Cynthia clipped, her eyes drifting into a threatening manner as she began calmly brushing her daughter's hair, "I will not have you ruin that for us,"
Kennedy whimpered at the constant rough pull that her mother made with each stroke of the brush, "Mom, I'm just not happy anymore, shouldn't I be able to be in a relationship that makes me happy?"
Cynthia sighed in annoyance, "Kennedy, don't you want our family to succeed?"
The girl nodded stiffly scared what her mother would do if she said no, "Yes,"
"Then you understand the importance of us being close to one of the most prominent families in Outer Banks, "
Kennedy sniffled quietly, wiping the small tears streaking down her cheeks, "I understand,"
Cynthia smiled brightly, placing the brush down in front of her daughter. The older woman squeezed her daughter's shoulders lightly, placing a soft kiss on her forehead, "Good, now go get ready, I expect you to go make things better with Rafe, I will not tolerate getting another call from the Camerons, alright?"
"Yes Ma'am,"
The older woman began to make her way out of the large bedroom, making Kennedy count every second until she was finally alone, but her breath got caught in her throat watching her mother pause, "Make sure to dress appropriately, it's rather warm today,"
"Will do,"
With those final words, her bedroom door was swiftly shut and Kennedy finally broke down. Tears cascaded softly down her cheeks, quiet yet sharp breaths shakily left her lips. Her forehead rested on her forearms as she attempted to get herself together. Kennedy felt her chest begin to implode, as much as she tried to rein in her emotions, nothing worked. She hated everything, she hated her life, her mother, her boyfriend.
Kennedy just wanted a fucking break, but it was something that never seems to come. She thought her mother would take pity on her, she thought she would see the sadness and exhaustion swirling in her daughter's eyes and feel sympathy. She thought that her mother would agree in letting the mess that is Rafe Cameron go. But she should've known that her mother would take pride in their image more than her daughter's happiness, there was no way out.
No one cared, there was no way to escape the things that pushed her down. It was as if she was drowning, with each stroke towards the surface, something tugged her further into the dark depths of the water. Kennedy didn't know what to do, she saw no escape, no one could help her leave the darkness she felt.
Kennedy felt moments like this often, she felt locked in something that she could never slip from. She hated feeling weak, feeling as if nothing could save her. At this moment she just wanted someone who could help her forget and or help her remember that her life was important. Without thinking, Kennedy jumped up from her chair, scooping up her phone like it was nothing, she scrolled past the thousands of messages from Rafe and her friends, finding the contact that could make her feel like herself again.

A WAVE OF WARM summer air drifted into the small kitchen that Kennedy resided in. A soft feeling of solitude rushed through her viens as she sipped quietly on the iced she had gripped in her hands. A random alternative station played on a radio that rested on the window above the sink. Kennedy sent her sister a large smile seeing the lively young woman bounce with euphoria as she danced along with the song that was playing. The freeing atmosphere made her forget the heavy events that were displayed in the past day in a half. Kennedy could hear the soft hum of the chirping birds that were just outside the open window.
Kennedy loved her sister's house with all her heart, it was like once Kennedy rushed through the doors, a weight had been lifted from her chest. Kennedy really needed to see her sister today, she needed to feel and hear the reassuring things her sister always said.
Kennedy's hands would not stop shaking as she stumbled into her car and drove to her sister's house. She could feel people's eyes drifting to her BMW as she sped by, slightly shocked at the speed, but no cop bothered to pull her over. She hoped she wouldn't have to run into any particular people on her way into town. But as she knew, fate was a fucking bitch, and she ended up right next to the infamous pogue van she despised with every fiber of her being at a stoplight. She made brief eye contact with a freaked out JJ through the passenger side window.
She cursed softly to herself and sent him a glare, but he paid no mind to it, his attention rather on the frazzled and shaken emotion swirling through her eyes. Kennedy just turned her head away from the boy, flicking the dial of her radio to the max as it blared some random pop song that was on the station. Luckily at that moment, the stoplight turned green and Kennedy sped away, not bothering to look at the van she left behind her.
It wasn't long until she parked in Maggie's driveway, once the confused brunette opened her front door, Kennedy ran into her arms. Maggie immediately knew it was something serious, seeing how disheveled her baby sister was. The young woman's blood boiled seeing the young girl in front of her in shambles. Maggie was one of the only people that constantly checked in with Kennedy, but she hated herself knowing she was lacking in the communication department as she began picking up more shifts at The Wreck.
Kennedy spilled everything that happened in the past few days, excluding the interactions with JJ Maybank, not wanting her sister to know anything about that. Maggie's face turned a bright red hearing her interaction with not only Rafe, but their mother. Sometimes Maggie wished she could just snatch Kennedy and have her live with her, but their mother would never let that happen. The brunette hated to see her sister fade, with each passing day she could see Kennedy falling further and further into the darkness that surrounded her life, and it scared her immensely. Maggie wanted nothing more than to save her younger sister, but she just didn't know how.
Kennedy fell silent long ago, her eyes drifting from her drink to the window across the kitchen island. While Maggie attempted to lighten the mood by dancing goofily along with the music, Kennedy originally had a smile at the actions, but it faded long ago.
"Maggie I don't know what to do,"
The brunette paused from placing a coffee cup in a cabinet, turning she was met with her younger sister's frown. "Kenn,"
"I'm trapped Mags," Kennedy's voice cracked softly, her eyes brimming with light tears, "I hate my life, I can't take this anymore, what should I do?"
"Kennedy," Maggie began, dropping her dishrag as she rounded the island to grab Kennedy's hands, "Babe, I felt the same way, but it'll get better,"
"I can't keep waiting," Kennedy shakily said, all her emotions finally catching up with her, "I need things to change now or I don't know how long I'll last,"
"Kennedy, don't you talk like that," Maggie whispered, her voice practically ripped from her throat at the confession from the small blonde.
"I may seem strong on the outside, but Maggie...I'm crumbling," Kennedy confessed quietly, her eyes falling to their hands, refusing to make eye contact with her sister, "If things don't change, I'll be completely gone,"
"If you're sick of wait for things to change, do it yourself," Maggie concluded, swallowing all the emotions that came with her sister's dark words.
Kennedy sniffled, wiping her tears away, "How?"
"I know it's hard to imagine, but mom can't control you forever," Maggie began, the mention of the woman made Kennedy tense, "You're getting older and you need to start making decisions for yourself,"
"I just can't stop list-"
"Yes, you can Kennedy," Maggie repeated, "I know it may seem impossible, but it's not, don't let other's dictate your life and if they don't accept that, especially mom, come live with me,"
Kennedy paused, giving her sister a glimmer of a smile, "You'd do that for me?"
"Of course," Maggie beamed, squeezing Kennedy's hands tightly, "I'd even do it for Top, I love you both with all my heart, and I refuse to see you guys drown in the shit mom puts you through,"
Kennedy snapped forward, wrapping her arms instantly around her sister, "I love you, and I know Top does too even if he doesn't show it,"
"I know Kenn," Maggie smiles softly, tucking a fluffy strand of Kennedy's blonde hair behind her left ear. "I just want you guys to not have to feel tied down to some shitty family that doesn't really care about each other,"
Kennedy laughed lightly, finding humor in the problems around her, "God our family is so shit,"
"Tell me about it," Maggie joked while bumping her shoulder with the blonde's, causing Kennedy to roll her eyes, "Why do you think I jumped ship as soon as I turned eighteen?"
Kennedy sent her a look, "With the way my life's going, looks like I'm gonna jump ship much earlier than you,"
Maggie chuckled at her comment, soon returning to her station at the sink, "And I'll be there for you every step of the way,"
"I know and you have no idea how much I appreciate that,"
A small silence followed the blonde's content words, feeling a small bit of weight be lifted off her shoulders as she talked about it all with someone. The noise of rushing water from the sink and the radio playing filled the small kitchen, Kennedy bounced her head along to the beat of the song, but her attention was taken away from her surroundings and down towards her phone that buzzed incessantly on the counter. Kennedy tried to ignore it but with each passing moment, the buzzes got more and more violent. The blonde sighed, picking up the phone to look at her home screen. Relief flooded her seeing that it was just Riley non-stop texting her, while she didn't want to answer him, knowing it would interrupt the calmness she had with her sister, she knew he wouldn't leave her alone if she didn't.
Kennedy glanced up to see her sister focused on the dishes in front of her, so quietly, the blonde slipped off her barstool and glided into the next room to answer Riley's phone call. She leaned again the wall next to the staircase as she slid her thumb against the screen in order to answer, "What do you want Cretin?"
"Name-calling now, are we?"
Kennedy snorted, "Most definitely, especially now since you're interrupting my peace and solace,"
Riley loudly groaned on the other line, "Are you getting high without me? Whore."
"No, you idiot," Kennedy scoffed, her voice filling with slight annoyance, "I'm hanging out with Maggie,"
"Without me?" Riley gasped dramatically, Kennedy rolled her eyes at the words, "How is my queen Mags?"
Kennedy huffed out a breath, leaning her head against the wall boredly, "Uh, she's good, she's been picking up a lot of shifts at The Wreck so she could have some extra cash, so she's been pretty busy,"
"Oh that's good, well tell her I said hi,"
"I will," Kennedy replied, lightly biting the cuticle on her pointer finger, "Now, what do you want Loser?"
A hesitant breath was heard from Riley, "You might not like it,"
Kennedy's face scrunched up in confusion, "What is it, Riley?'
"Well...you see..."
Kennedy sighed, "Just tell me before I murder you,"
"IneedyoutogogetmysweatshirtfromJohnB'splace,"
Kennedy barely picked up any of the words that Riley rushed out, but she was able to pick out "sweatshirt" "John B's place". A shocked gasp escaped Kennedy's lips, and she immediately shook her head in response, "Fuck you, never in a million years,"
"Kennedy please,"
"What did I just say, Riley?" Kennedy hissed with pure anger and frustration, "I will never go to that Chateau in a million years,"
"It's my favorite sweatshirt," Riley groaned.
"Looks like you're going to have to pick a new favorite,"
"I'll never ask you for anything again, please,"
Kennedy's eyes widened, "Did you fucking forget about what happened last night? You really want me to risk my life for a fucking sweatshirt?"
"Risk your life? It's just the pogues,"
"Just the pogues? Did you forget one of them had a fucking gun pointed at my brother last night?" Kennedy hissed quietly, fearful that her sister would hear the words she just uttered.
"Please, JJ would've never done anything, and you know that,"
"Riley, I've already told you no, I'm sorry you'll have to get it yourself,"
"Come on Kenn, my dad heard about what happened last night and he's like literally tracking me everywhere I go, he will ground my ass for eternity if he saw I went near the pogues," Kennedy sighed loudly on the other line, and Riley knew he was cracking her, "I will never ask you for anything ever again, and I'll never make you party with the pogues ever again,"
Kennedy paused for a moment, taking in his words. She was annoyed because he most definitely would not stop making her do things for him, but she also knew that he wouldn't stop until she got his sweatshirt. Kennedy sighed, swallowing her anger for the boy, and pouted to herself lightly, "Fuck you fine,"
"Yes!" Riley cheered through the other line, his voice filled with excitement, "I'll love you forever,"
"Whatever, I'll drop it off at yours after I get it,"
"I love you, I love you, I love you,"
Kennedy rolled her eyes in amusement, "Yeah, yeah, I'll call you later when I'm on my way to your house,"
"Bye Bestie!"
"Bye Loser,"
Kennedy clicked the red button on her screen to end the call, she instantly dropped her phone lightly to her side with a frown etched onto her ruby-red lips. She wanted to do literally anything else than to take a visit to the pogues who hated her guts. Her stomach dropped further realizing that the oversized shirt she thought nothing of this morning was a shirt that a certain pogue left at her house last summer in a flurry to escape through the window before her mother caught them together. Anxiety bubbled in her stomach knowing that there was no way to ignore the white shirt draped over her small frame, and JJ was certainly going to give her a hard time for it.
Great, exactly what she needed.
